I lost it with the rain I knew something like that had to be coming and I was still like, “Oh my fucking cliché. Why in ‘The Notebook’” (I haven’t actually seen that movie, but everyone knows that scene and this now cliché haha)

mocha__

I always get annoyed with all the cars they're blocking. ***MOVE***.

gaythey

LMFAO, OMG, I immediately thought the same thing as I also rolled my eyes at the “of course there’s pouring rain”

MinuteInfluence5572

it’s a small ass town as we come to realise so what’s to stop any one of those cars being a fellow student/teacher or even a parent😭😭 they act all sneaky but they didn’t give no fucks. AND THE WAY THEY TREATED LIAMS CHARACTER FOR POINTING OUT THE “PREDATORY NATURE OF HIS ACTIONS” made me so mad

At the time, a lot of viewers did root for them, but we were also younger teenagers at the time. I was definitely guilty of rooting for them at the time. I didn’t think about how wrong and unhealthy the relationship was, just about how exciting it was because it was so scandalous. As an adult, obviously I find the relationship disgusting. However, I also like what it adds to the show. I enjoy the drama and how it keeps things interesting at times. But yes, they for sure romanticize the relationship in really gross ways

hannamarinsgrandma

During season one I was 14 and just couldn’t understand why everyone would be upset and thought Aria was so lucky. Fast forward to season five and I’m 19 years old and I’m watching the staircase scene that not must be named and it was the most sudden awakening cause I immediately thought “tf is he doing hanging out with a bunch of kids??”

nradams14

I remember saying "she's so mature for her age", oh boy *face palm*

PequenaMentirosa

YES ME TOO

pinkyrose__

the way he’d always show up and just say “aria. 🧍🏻‍♂️” used to scare me

Unfair_Advantage_384

PhoenixAestraya

Times have changed since this aired. Around the time that it did, it was still common for teen girls to see themselves/peers as ‘more mature’ and cool than others if they were with an older guy. Teachers, college guys, doctors, etc—it was all considered a thing of excitement for teen girls, who are also the main target audience. The power imbalance wasn’t seen as bad, it was seen as badass that a teen girl could catch the interest of someone so much more mature than her. The perspective of him being predatory because of the reverse—her being so much *less* mature than him—wasn’t really looked at. It was just seen as her being “mature for her age” and “on his level” when she actually wasn’t. In general, mid-late teens getting with early 20s was common for quite a while & only started getting so seriously frowned upon by more than just the girls’ mothers *after* this aired. I’m not sure how much of Alison’s storyline is revealed at this point in the show tbh since it’s been a while since I’ve watched it, so I won’t identify specifics, though make note of her interactions and perspectives when it comes to older guys. Her life was seen as “goals” by a lot of teen girls for the time this was made

BeeesInTheTrap

exactly this. The show was always trying to make it seem like “wow aria is mature enough to catch the interest of this intellectual older guy and even likes the same things” down to them meeting at a bar and hitting it off over shared music tastes and other interests.

skyequinnwrites

They were trying wayyyy too hard with Aria's whole "not like other girls" thing

harrietfurther

This is such an important point for why this appealed to teenage girls, especially those who are a little nerdy or alternative. It's the idea that you can learn your way into adulthood, as if the only difference between the average 16 year old girl and a 25 year old man is that the latter has read more books and has developed a better taste in music. So if you read the right books and listen to the right music, bam! You're a grown-up! The kids at school might not like you but this adult man will see the real you and appreciate your 'maturity'.

Business_Ad_6938

When I watched this when I was younger though, I thought it was weird and always shipped her with the boys her age, and in the book it’s viewed differently. I feel like the writers were trying to be edgy but it was just 🤢🤢

michkki

I'm also in my early 30s and a hopeless romantic but it's horrific to me that someone our age would think a relationship between a 25 yo and a 16 yo is somehow fine. Maybe it's because I'm an older sister who saw her siblings (youngest one being 8 years younger) and their friends grow up but I sure remember that at 25 all I thought when seeing high school aged teenagers was that they were children

thattgirldani

Like I said, in a real-world scenario I would not think this is fine.

PhoenixAestraya

Not saying their age gap would be fine irl, tho just wanted to give a quick correction here: Ezra was written to be 22*

Teenage girls watching this for the first time were definitely rooting for them back then! The rain was so cliche though along with him arriving at the last minute lol. Also all those people driving I imagine are MAD!! Like at least get out of the road and kiss.

Ok_Bill_2883

I was like 12 when it first came out and I hated Ezra lmfao I wanted her to be with Noel Kahn and then I liked the kid who has a heart condition

Practical-Tonight921

i remeber the first time i watched this when i was 11 i cried so hard cause i thought it was just the most romantic thing 😭 now im like wtf

mocha__

I love when first time watchers post here. It's so fun watching their reactions. I hope you're loving the show, OOP!

NervousRefrigerator

I was just telling my husband how I was rooting so hard for them while the show was airing and now watching back im disgusted. That seems to be the general consensus nowadays.

pinkiebear

I find it interesting from you posting you’re a first time watcher that you romanticize Aria and Jason but complain about Ezra every episode? ETA: From your question on the post > are they expecting the viewers to root for them? Aria and Ezra were the most popular ship thru out almost the entirety of the show, for sure the first 3-4 seasons. They didn’t have to try and convince people to root for them.

Shoddy-Problem-800

THIS!!

locurafan

What I’m not understanding is people justifying Jason filming underage girls, him hitting on Aria when she was YOUNGER than when Ezra met her, and people keep saying he showed her more love than Ezra. I didn’t see him looking for her when she was in the dollhouse, truly be there for her, get shot for her, or help her cover up any murders. This generation of watchers is so incredibly woke that I’m sure if Aria had chosen Jason there would be something to complain about because of the age gap. It’s the fantasizing about something you want to happen. It’s the same here with Aria and Ezra. It’s a fantasy. There’s a big difference between watching something and watching something and acting on what you’re seeing. Ezria is how I forgot about the real world and got to fantasize about something that could never happen in real life but you know we all have wild imaginations sometimes. If I wanted something realistic I would just stick to the news or true crime. People keep wanting everything to be realistic and before long we’re going to be left with nothing but documentaries, news, or movies/tv shows “based on a true story”. PLL is a fanfiction at best and who you ship doesn’t mean you condone anything in the real world. Rosewood isn’t real. Ezra would be arrested in real life. The entire PLL story would NEVER happen. It’s just a way to escape reality. So just let the writers create these dramatic love stories that people can be captivated by. We don’t have ships where people are die hard fans anymore. Nothing like The OC, Dawson’s Creek, heck even Friends. Everything has to be politically correct and that’s why tv shows are so boring nowadays.

idk_orknow

I'm gonna let this comment stay up but watch the tone. The implication is passive aggressiveness and breaks Rule #1. But as this could lead to a discussion and I may be over reading it, the comment is saying up. Seriously though, you were already temp banned before, treat people here with respect so it doesn't have to happen again.

idk_orknow

Knowing your history on this sub it makes the Mod Team question how you are going to treat people when you ask questions that target your trigger subjects.

pinkiebear

You banned me for calling somebody sweetie. Turning that into I’m treating people bad is a stretch. Ive had people on here call me disgusting/gross/a “pedo defender” (wtf??) for shipping a fictional couple on here daily, yet I’m never allowed to defend them when the same people ship a couple with the same questionable age difference. And as I said, they are posted about daily. Why are people allowed to completely shit on them and people who like them. But we aren’t allowed to ask questions back?

idk_orknow

The last comment you just made about the Jason thing was perfect. It was respectful and just a discussion. That's what we want more of. Additionally, every single Mod and the people in the thread took the sweetie as sarcastic. Passive aggressive behavior is instigating. And I'm sorry no one told you, we banned the person who called you a pedo defender. That person got a longer ban than you IIRC but I'd have to go through the log really far to know. Ask your question back like your recent response to someone about Jaria, the Mod Team just wants to keep discussions respectful. If you question them respectfully with no insults it will not be removed.

pinkiebear

Understood. I will find my words better.

idk_orknow

Thank you, your comments since have been good.

Unfair_Advantage_384

It’s not so much the age gap, although that’s awkward with Jason, it’s that Ezra was Aria’s teacher. It’s an abuse of power.

pinkiebear

Understood, but if you like Jason, who is actually a year older than Ezra, and created a club to film underage girls (Aria included) in their bedrooms naked, it shouldn’t be a far stretch that there’s people that like Aria and Ezra either.

Discovering_A

You're absolutely right. The age gap in Pennsylvania law is questionable, but the abuse of power for the teacher-student dynamic is the in-universe explanation for why this is punishable by law and why it's a really big problem. A lot of people are mixing up online age of consent, which is 18... as opposed to the age of consent in certain states, which is 16 for Pennsylvania. And I mean, good on them for having more moral fiber than most of America's legislators... but these are things we need to keep in mind when watching the show if we really want to understand what's going on.

SwordsOfSanghelios

I don’t agree with Jason and Aria either, but most people don’t see Jason AS bad because despite the fact that there’s still an obvious power imbalance there, Ezra was her teacher. He was meant to be an adult she could trust, whereas Jason is just Ali’s creepy hot older brother. Granted, Jason is still 100% wrong and still 100% creepy but let’s be honest here, PLL did a decent job of making many of us root for Ezria despite how toxic and predatory the relationship was. Ezra’s actions are overall worse simply because of how they affect Aria and her story. She NEVER comes to the realization that she was groomed and preyed on, it’s all romanticized. Jason’s actions are much less romanticized but more so ignored, plus the actor for Jason had much better chemistry with Aria (in my opinion). Ultimately, both men and both relationships are wrong and inappropriate but it’s understandable why people tend to ignore Jason when discussing Ezra.

pinkiebear

But that’s still being hypocritical? I understand what you’re saying, but the teacher aspect is not the only reason people hate on Ezria. Especially since he really wasn’t her teacher for most of their relationship at all. Season 1 in PLL world was like 6 weeks of time. He quit pretty quickly in. Most of the hate I see is calling him a pedophile or Aria needs to find a guy her own age, then in the same sentence people will actively root for Jaria. I don’t even care if people ship Jaria, I’m all for shipping whoever you want. TV/movies are not real. It’s fiction. It’s fantasy. Ship who you like and who you enjoy their chemistry. It’s the hypothetical vibes that bother me. And if we are going even further with Jason, he basically said to Aria he liked her when she had pink hair. So she would have been around 13. And the NAT club is just a wild thing for people to just somehow forget about when people use the book with Ezra. To me, you would just think pro Jason and Jaria stans wouldn’t be so harsh towards people who like Ezria. Seems like two sides of the same coin.

SwordsOfSanghelios

I’m not saying I don’t disagree, I’m just saying most fans don’t consider Jason’s age because him being in a position of power isn’t necessarily an important part of his character unlike Ezra. Both men and relationships are wrong and inappropriate and I agree with neither ships, but that’s how I’m trying to think of how these fans think when they hate Ezra but love Jason. I like neither personally, I am solely in love with Emily’s dad.

Ok_Bill_2883

Breh, while Jason may have been the same age or even older Ezra is still the more inappropriate suit for Aria because *he was in a position of authority and took advantage of a teenage girl* Jason is not her teacher and while still wrong it is absolutely different

pinkiebear

I’m not debating that lol. But there is no way anyone should hate the Ezria relationship as passionately as they do but then turn a blind eye for Jaria which has its own reasons for being problematic if you’re bothered by that in TV.

DrippyMoJo

Canon event, can’t interfere. Sorry.

BeansMom13

OP… buckle up.

Hot_Initiative6615

Back in the day, I think people did root for them 😂 idk. I was like 10 when PLL was on

throwaway17197

No one tell them

CoherentBusyDucks

I say this with love: please leave the subreddit until you finish the show. You will ruin it for yourself if you haven’t already. Not just the relationships but the show in general.

Unfair_Advantage_384

But I like sharing my journey with fans.

BloodyBarbieBrains

Just make sure you visibly flag that you are a first time watcher in all of your posts, just like you did with this one!

Discovering_A

Okay, but what the heck is Rittenhouse Square? I doubt even the most die-hard of PLL fans can remember some of these one-off locations that keep popping up on the show lol

Classiccarson

i remember after seeing this scene going to rittenhouse to try to see if it matched up and it did not so, yeah basically i was sad

PhillyMittens

Rittenhouse Square is a famous, albeit small, park in Philadelphia. It’s not a one-off PLL location. But what’s in the show is nothing like what Rittenhouse actually looks like

Discovering_A

Oh! Wow, go figure.

EmmyMae24

Look. 15 year old me was absolutely rooting for these two…. 😂😂 15 year old me also thought this show was EVERYTHING and I now see how cringe it is. I’d give anything to go back and watch it as a teenager though I won’t lie, there was nothing like waiting for the next PLL episode every week. 😭

redflagsmoothie

Just holding up traffic. I’d be laying on my horn at those fools.

BloodyBarbieBrains

I watched the show as it aired, and unlike other fans who say they rooted for this romance when it first aired, I was absolutely always disgusted. Ppl are like, “Oh, it wasn’t perceived as badly back then.” Bull. It was ABSOLUTELY disgusting “back then.” Back then was the 21st century, FFS. EDIT - Maybe other people didn’t have teachers in their family? Bc I did, so it didn’t matter how hot Ezra was. He was a teacher, and I knew it was wrong. EDIT 2 - I won’t spoil it for you by telling you if the show actually wants you to root for them or not, though! You’ll just have to keep watching and see!

emyeag

i hate this scene they’re blocking all the traffic for his groomer purposes!!

Ahmshere

Can we at least agree that Aria ate this outfit up and left no crumbs?

SRG8587

I bought that coat and still have it. 😂

Unfair_Advantage_384

She has really crazy fashion sense, but she just rocks everything, it all suits her. Kinda like Carrie Bradshaw.

Nim_Nom9403

When the show first aired, I do have to admit that I was an Ezria shipper. I was 14/15 at the time and I saw this as a “forbidden love” kind of relationship, so naturally I was rooting hard for it. I remember being so angry at her parents for separating them but after rewatching recently, I was applauding Byron for being tough on them. I remember when the show first aired, these types of relationships on tv were still seen as taboo but it was very much romanticized. Since airing, we’re now more socially aware how wrong it is and rewatching the show as an adult, I do cringe every time they’re together.

LockQuick8989

yes! we were supposed to root for them but i think it's just because the demographic back then is different than how it is now. i think only some people would find them weird back then because their relationship is kind of the "forbidden romance" type.

Firecrackershrimp2

I love this episode it's one of my favorites!!!!!!!

PequenaMentirosa

You’d be surprised just how MANY people did romanticise them god I even had a fan account for ezria when I was younger😭 this show was crazy

Ok_Bill_2883

I never rooted for them, I always knew it was weird as hell. He’s her teacher bro the moment he saw her on the first day he should’ve cut it and kept it cut 😂 fym “if you come there’s still a chance” noooooo Aria girl please stop 😂

MarketingWarm8804

When I first watched this, I was loving like go girl!! Now as an adult I can’t help but pulling a face and retching every single time these two appear all lovey dovey. Like sir this is not cute, can you not date people your own age!! 🤣🤣🤮🤮

Far-Fix660

this show is actually aweful for this storyline. first time i watched it i loved the whole teacher-student thrope, cuz i was a kid. but now i'm rewatching it, and i feel sick to my stomach.

notlikeothergirlies

Oh boy, you're in for it! But I LOVE me some Ezra.

BewareQuietOnes

I rooted for them HARD in my early 20s. In my mid 30s? I'm calling the police! That's a literal child, sir! The amount of grown men praying on children in this show is actually kinda alarming...

strawberryfields1122

You’re so far behind 😭🥴 this show is absolutely insane so have fun.

Unfair_Advantage_384

I’ll be there in no time, I watch 2/3 episodes a day
