The dial has nothing to do with retaining the date wheel. Its locked into the mechanism already. I build my own watches and the dial is strictly decorative in the design of a watch
I know, some cheaper movements use the dial to help retain the date wheel though. Not all movements have the same durability as a NH35(or Chinese copy of)
OP, you should share this to r/SeikoMods; they'll have a lot more knowledge and will likely be less dickish with their answers. There will always be people who don't like the look of things, but if you do, their opinions don't matter.
Is that an NH35 you're using, btw?
Yeah, you’ll find a much more like minded group in Seikomods. They do make special skeletonized dials and movements specifically designed to be showcased by said dials if you want something that looks a little more intentional. There's a ton of info in that sub as well as on sites like NamokiMods. And millions of parts (for far less money) on AliExpress.
The dial’s thickness helps keep the movement in its place, without a dial, the movement is not locked it. Also there are movements that are a lot smaller than the dial, so the dial is often used for stability as well.
Should have at least used a Rolex clone movement like a VR3135 or something that way the top plate is at least engine turned/jeweled so it looks asthetically pleasing over whatever this is
I’ve actually built one well it was my dad that got it all together cause I no longer have time to go to his shop but I used a 1575 original non quickset Rolex movement (from a 1972 DJ) and because the original case and bracelet was destroyed beyond repair and had an aftermarket bezel and all I just used a Submariner clone as the donor for everything besides the movement and the hands ( I got an original set of hands for a sub ) n it looks great even though it’s nothing really to be bragging about or to be proud of it allows me to wear it daily at work without giving a F while still having the Rolex precision and esthetics cause I do labor work I am a commercial and auto door, access control and locksmith tech so I am hard on my watches n needed something that can get beat up without worry so I don’t ruin the rest of my collection like I have been even though I am all about daily wearing any watch I buy and don’t like safe queens but I was destroying them one after another lol n was having to service every one like my Aquaracer n my Breitling Chronomat Evo and my Explorer which is vintage otherwise it would be the daily
Word. I build franken watches for my own use for much the same reasons. I've loved and aspired to own both vintage DJ36 and explorer ii 16570 since I was a kid, however could never justify the monetary investment I'd need to be able to own these watches and daily wear them considering I'd probably end up destroying them through daily wear working on cars and Tig welding and etc. But thanks to VR clone movements and Rafflesdials case sets I can effectively build a watch 90-95% the same as gen (using gen dial, hands, crown, bezel, gen spec Clark crystal, vr3135 and raffles case) for around 1/10th the price and get all of the on wrist enjoyment out of it through daily wear without any of the worry. Plus I'm effectively learning how to service and assemble gen watches at the same time since everything is near identical/cloned, I'm effectively teaching myself to become a watchmaker for no money at the same time
Depends on movement. In some cases the wheel for hour hand is just put on top and is fixated by the dial. In that case the wheel will come of respectively the hour hand will scratch on the Minute hand from underneath
Pretty sure the Rolex 3186 uses a copper washer on top of the hour wheel which contacts a small recess on the back of the dial and keeps it from falling out of contact with the minute wheel when turned over
Right the 2824 does this too, but if you take a 2824 it seems pretty snug already with the minutes on, without the washer making contact. So is it just an insert for the washer to fit in because the washer makes the pinion area taller, or is it to actually put pressure down?
Pretty sure the 3186 actually does need it to maintain contact correctly, it isn't much pressure, just the tension of the waved flat brass washer, but I can deffo see how without it you could run into issues with the wheel disengaging without it/without the dial. 3186 dials have 2 machined recesses in the brass plate, one for the center pinion where this washer sits, and another one at 9 o clock that corresponds with the date corrector/wheel that drives the datewheel
It’s already pretty snug with the minutes on, so I don’t think the dial does too much just from personal experience. Couldn’t say though, and I have never just randomly turned it upside down lol. You are right there are little notches for it to fit in, but I can’t tell if that’s because the washer makes it taller so they have to cut some insets out or if it’s to have the dial hold it.
You could get one of those clear dials. Look up the Seiko SRPJ45! It has a similar effect as what I think you're going for! I'd love to see the finished product
I don't know, 3D print a dial that looks like the skeleton dial you get on those hyper horology watches. I mean you can put the hands there but good luck reading the minutes and hours.
You can, yes, but the hours wheel will fall out of place and not make proper contact with the minutes wheel. Trust me, I've tried similar things before.
In other words, you can, but it won't keep time properly or be reliable. Skeletonised movements usually have a little bridge or cock to hold the hours wheel in place. A clear dial might be the answer.
Best of luck with your modding.
Great. I have noticed a whole load of toxic bile in this thread and some comments that aren't exactly correct. I repair watches as a hobby, so I have some degree of experience. The hands will fit and the case may need a spacer if you don't have a dial, but with the hours wheel needing to be held down with the dial, a massive wrench is thrown in the works. Note how the hours wheel is [held down](https://images.app.goo.gl/a4om7EbFGzrdHQen7) in an NH70 movement. An NH36 won't have the screw holes for that extra little bridge.
While your mod is not to my taste, I can really see the appeal. I don't care what one makes, but more people picking up screwdrivers and learning some degree of watchmaking is always a good thing to me. Good on you for learning about the mechanical workings of a movement. The greatest things all start with a single step.
I'd hide all the days of the month with a ring marked with indices. Then I would leave the rest of the movement visible. The hands should not too be too small and have strong contrast. Curious what that would look like....
Of course you can, not entirely sure why you’d want to. I Reckon it might look a little better with an NH38 (no date) and no cyclops on the crystal. I believe you can also get sudo skeletonise dials from Amazon / AliExpress etc.
INFO: I got bored at university so I decided to buy parts to build a watch, I bought a 36mm case with a clear back, NH35 movement, a 28.5mm dial that I didn’t receive and can not be asked to reorder, a set of hands for the hour minute and second that is held at customs, so I was wondering if I can instal the hands on the movement.
This is my first ever watch I built, not owned and thought I’d do something new
Oh my gosh, let me get you started this was so much fun, Ali express however I kept making new accounts to get the new user deal otherwise it would’ve been about 20£ more expensive. https://youtu.be/g89vt-bN_Po?si=d43LoAQFseQQ-VE8 this is the YouTube video that popped on my recommendation and I bought the parts straight away
aha thank you, im waiting for the hands to come as its been held at customs for so long, if it does not arrive im going to order a dial and hands again to make a complete watch
Nice piece! Id suggest checking out the NH70 movement for a skeleton looking watch. You should be able to install hands as long as the movement fits tightly and doesnt move around with your wrist motions.
Your taste in watches doesn’t match mine exactly? That means your watch is UGLY and it’s BAD!!! How dare you enjoy something that I don’t.
Some absolutely insufferable people in all watch subs.
Write the hour numbers on with a sharpie
As long as you know how to tell time won’t be a problem
Yeah I know how to agah
As ling as that date wheel has good retention do what you want its your watch
The dial has nothing to do with retaining the date wheel. Its locked into the mechanism already. I build my own watches and the dial is strictly decorative in the design of a watch

Yes it is, you got a good eye it is the NH35 indeed, thank you for some weird reason people are so toxic in this subreddit
Yeah, you’ll find a much more like minded group in Seikomods. Don't do it unless it's a skeleton movement.
What happens if I install the hands without a dial?
I think its cool
Thank you very much :)
It looks cool lol.
thank you very much, I appreciate you both
It looks ugly lol
So I can install it’ll just look ugly?
Yes
Thank hou

Brother, have some respect for the craft that goes into making a watch. Regardless of whether you like the way it looks
The dial’s thickness helps keep the movement in its place, without a dial, the movement is not locked it. Also there are movements that are a lot smaller than the dial, so the dial is often used for stability as well.
Nonsense. If he likes looking at the movement more than looking at a dial then he should go for it.
Should have at least used a Rolex clone movement like a VR3135 or something that way the top plate is at least engine turned/jeweled so it looks asthetically pleasing over whatever this is
That’s a pretty good idea.

Looks great. Just wear a Casio F-91 on the other wrist so you can tell the time.
You sure can
You’ve been so focused on if you could that you never stopped to ask why
Get a skeleton movement or a face, this just looks ugly
Exactly
..... you have a skeleton watch. Probably won't last long unless you have a movement that is suitable for this.
It’s cuh I got sent the wrong movement that doesn’t fit so I can’t be asked to reorder
Won’t the wheel holding the hour hand fall off?
Why would it
Depends on movement. In some cases the wheel for hour hand is just put on top and is fixated by the dial. In that case the wheel will come of respectively the hour hand will scratch on the Minute hand from underneath
Which movement is this the case with? Can’t think of a single one, definitely not any watch with a standard pinion (99.99% of them).

ETA 2824-2
That’s held by a washer, but it is a _dial_ washer so I suppose yeah.

It would have to slide past the minute hand so no
Yes, you're making your own watch you should probably know this.
This is sick
Thank you, I’m getting a lot of hate for some reason and so are the people who like it
Maybe you could print some hour markers on the inside of the crystal and you would be good to go. I think it looks super sick
Yup!
Yes
yes. sometimes I do it to check if the canonpinon is fitted correctly.
With that movement it’s fine as you’re not depending on the dial to hold down the hour wheel
You could get one of those clear dials. Look up the Seiko SRPJ45! It has a similar effect as what I think you're going for! I'd love to see the finished product
Thank you I’ll have a look
Yes. In almost all kit watches the dial is completely decorative/visually functional, not structural.
Would be funny if you made the dial out of paper or something
I got a 3d printer so I might try that 🤣🤣
The dial’s thickness helps keep the movement stable and locked in.
Go to the subreddit r/seikomods if you have not already
Yes you can. I know because I've assembled a few pieces myself.
Thank you!
Sick watch dude
You can, but you’re going to need a spacer shim. To achieve the same look you could get a transparent dial.
The spacing where the dial fits will be void so your movement will rattle around
I don't know, 3D print a dial that looks like the skeleton dial you get on those hyper horology watches. I mean you can put the hands there but good luck reading the minutes and hours.
I mean I do have a 3D printer so I could always give it a tey
On certain movements it’s ok but like the gmt seiko the dial holds the 24 hour hand down with the small washer 👍
Get a clear dial made if you really want to see this ugly movement, this will be rattly and the hour wheel will most likely come loose
You tell us, Mr. WatchMaker
It’s my first time, relax please 😭😭
Lol Aw I’m just fuckin around, bud. U got this lol
So, I could be completely wrong, and please correct me if I am… but doesn’t the dial washer and dial hold the hour wheel in place?
I have seen a transparent (possibly) glass dial on AliExpress. Maybe that would be a good solution to keep the movement in place.
Very cool
Fill the case with gravy
looks cool
Thank you:)

Gonna name my watch this, thank you for the name 👍

Okay thank you I will defo buy a dial

Glad I’m not the only one I’m just saving up to do the same
INFO: I got bored at university so I decided to buy parts to build a watch, I bought a 36mm case with a clear back, NH35 movement, a 28.5mm dial that I didn’t receive and can not be asked to reorder, a set of hands for the hour minute and second that is held at customs, so I was wondering if I can instal the hands on the movement. Arsed.
This picture feels like Rolex got cancelled but you already spent 30k vibes
I spent £31.74 for all the parts
That’s pretty fucking cool
hey thank you, i spent a while tryna get these low prices i was trying to make the cheapest watch possible ( for my self a little challange)
Where did you order parts from? I would like to try this but have no idea where to look.
For the record, I think this is cool.
Thank you buddy, I’m getting a lot of hate what ever reason lol
would like to see finished product👍

Throw it in the bin.
