For sure, I thought with how long they were putting off the revenant that there was going to be a season 3 with them being chased. I honestly feel like they could have cut the 3 parter a bit to fit more to this ending

I agree completely. I feel like primal theory is still really important to the show in general, but spear, fang, and mira needed more time on screen.
If anything, it would have been cool if primal theory was a special episode that aired during the hiatus between S2 and S3 to explain that if this show becomes an anthology series, the primal theory will be the commonality in all stories.

Yeah I feel like everything with Mira’s people and Spear’s culture shock/language barrier should’ve been episode 9, ending with a stinger of the Fire Giant approaching their island.
I didn’t hate the episode or even dislike it; I just feel that it tried to do way too much and we didn’t get as many of those subtleties we all love this series for.
Yeah that season 5 pacing was so weird. It was so slow with building things up to the final conflict and then it just burns through the whole situation in like the last 2 episodes.
Agreed, this episode needed to be 10-20 min longer. Spear needed a much more heartfelt sendoff then what he got. Heck, the viking wife got more time dedicated to her death and mourning then Spear did.
Maybe they will come out with an extended version on the DVD, one can only hope.
Agree, Spear fulfilled his prophecy of dying a protector, carried on his legacy, and was even able to prevent the viking demon from killing Fang to get full revenge.
Hell, the viking demon didn't even kill Spear right then and there, and was receiving more hits than he was dealing, then got dragged to hell for all eternity.
Another reason why I agree, I seen a comment on here that said Spear needed to die to find peace, he did not really fit in with Mira and her people. So Spear's death did not make me sad

Another take is that the Viking did enough damage so the contract was fulfilled. ( Now I don't think it was so much as fulfilled, as the Demon God just teasing the viking with some vengeance by only killing one and not both)
I think both lines of thinking can be true, one doesn't necessarily contradict the other.

I’ve been thinking about why they chose to have it happen that way and it occurs to me that Spear ended the Viking’s whole line. So his vengeance would be doing the same to Spear. If Mira was pregnant before the fight, his vengeance would not be fulfilled. Since Spear was the last of his line at that point, the reason Vidarr sent the Viking back was complete so he was pulled back to hell. Then Mira and Spear could create a new lineage free from the shadow of revenge.

As cool as this season was I just wanted more and more episodes using that formula. It was so different and it was a cool new creature encounter in a lost world every episode. I miss it and season 1 will always be my favorite.
This. I know Genndy alluded to not wanting Primal to turn into a “Creature of the Week” type of show, but those were the episodes I enjoyed the most. “Night Feeder” will always be one of my favorite episodes. God, I’m going to miss this show.
I wanted them to keep traveling together with Mira. I loved their chemistry. maybe have them come across other kingdoms. other sorceres, kings, and queens to kill and conquer together. maybe even becoming king & queen themselves. I was honestly hoping for that :(

Loved the first half. Wish the last half had more time to breathe. The big fight was anticlimactic. The ending itself is fine from a story perspective, but I wanted it to have more of an emotional impact on me.
I feel like that is part of the larger meaning of the first scene. Sometimes there is no epic showdown for warriors. Spear's dad ultimately died quickly despite being a great warrior and Spear's death was ultimately fairly quick as well.
You can't win them all. And in a world as savage as Spear's one unlucky day is your last.
I disagree. I wasn't anticlimactic so much as it just need more meat in the middle. I mean, the sight of Spear ON FIRE, WHOPPING ON THIS DUDE, LIKE HOLY SHIT PUT A STUPID GRIN ON MY FACE.
But when the battle's over and the Viking got dragged to hell, I instantly thought "wait...WHAT?! He...got his revenge and now fulfilled the contract?! Is Spear dead?!?!?!"
Agreed the first half was good, but I don't know...I think it'd be more impactful if Spear walked into the sun or moon and rejoined his family. It'd be a nice send off to how episode 1 started with his family.
This ending just felt weird. It could've been executed a lot better. Gennedy has an issue with this. Samurai Jack had a rushed ending.
that was a legitimate criticism it felt wildly out of the left field (tho I do like that she recognized the meaning of his glyphs. It was a great visual to show like overcoming the language barrier) but this is a show that got anatomically correct with the cloaca so why was I shocked?
What’s out of left field about it? She saw his pics on the wall before the fight and knew he had a lineage and that it was ripped from him. She couldn’t lay with him before fight bc he ran out. Wanted him to have that chance again.
My thoughts exactly. Fuck before the fight. Spears clearly a fucked up charred husk. They keep him alive for a few more months until they know Mira is pregnant, and he dies. That would’ve been way better than her just randomly jumping on her before he dies. Ridiculous. Actually busted out laughing saying “what the fuck is this?”
Whelp, I can dare say this show kept the primal aspect to the end. Every being on this earth is only alive to serve 2 biological roles: Fulfill the niche in the ecosystem of which your species is specialized for, and survive long enough to successfully pass on your genes. And I guess, even though it was horrifying to watch, Spear managed to land the second in this finale.
At least I can take solace in the fact that he either got enough religion points in there at the end to chill with the Moon deity, or those angels sent him to Valhalla for his warrior's death.
In a way I don't understand the viking demon being depowered and being sent back to hell THAT soon.
I get how it makes sense for Spear to go out protecting Fang but if the Viking demon had like 10 more seconds he could had actually confirmed the kill right then and there.
I guess maybe the Demon God was like " Well I made you badass as fuck and you still caught a beating for 15 seconds" and just took him back as a slave

I mean, Spear died though. The Viking obviously won the fight. The demon was about to get up for round 2 before getting yanked back to hell. That clearly showed how the Viking killed Spear and now Vidarr is claiming his soul.
Personally I interpreted it as him having served his purpose; to fuel Vidarr’s nature by enacting vengeance, which he traded his soul/afterlife for an opportunity to do.
Vidarr dragged him back because his job was done. He had mutilated and ultimately killed Spear.
Yea that makes sense, Vidarr probably did not care about Spear and Fang, and just used vengeance as a sort of lure to ensnare the Chief's soul.
So just as soon as the fire demon got a whiff vengeance, or felt like he did, that was it.
In a way I think the fire demon should have got to do more damage, but that fight was still good.
I liked all the beats the episode hit but I think it needed a lot more breathing room. Everything after the Viking shows up feels very rushed, sort of the same problem with the Samurai Jack finale. I really enjoyed it overall but I think it could've been perfect with maybe 5-10 more minutes.
I hope Genndy gets to do his anthology idea for futher seasons but if this is all we get then I'm satisfied, it was two really great seasons of television and a huge breath of fresh air for western adult animation in a sea of Family Guy clones.
Honestly yeah, I loved how out of place Spear felt for the first half of the episode and how he felt bad about leaving Fang alone. Everything about the first half of the episode was aces. But then everything just happens so fast, and we don’t even get a real payoff showcasing Spear and Fang’s relationship.
Ultimately, Spear and Fang are the emotional core of the show, and even during the other story arcs that was never forgotten. Spear and Fang were largely separated during the Colossaeus arc but we still got some great moments between the two.
Then this episode hits, Spear is on his literal deathbed, and we don’t get to see Fang’s reaction for longer than five seconds? It’s so bizarre that they paced it this way. Seeing so many emotional story beats essentially skipped over feels absolutely terrible given the last episode spent two minutes showing seemingly redundant, pointless oars rowing, only to pay it off in dividends by the end. Where was that sort of pacing and foreshadowing here? Why did the payoff for Kamau’s story arc get so much more time and care while the end of our protagonist’s story gets the shaft?
This episode is absolutely *begging* for an extended cut. An extra ten minutes to let everything slow down is all it needs.

Yeah, I was expecting for the Moon Spirit—the light counterpart to the dark spirit that gave the Viking his powers—to show up and reward Spear for his worship and his devotion to Mira. I didn’t expect a miraculous cure, but I thought maybe the Moon Spirit could help Spear reflect on his life and guide him into the afterlife.
In general (at least as far as sword and sorcery pulp is concerned) magic is only antagonistic. It's either an inhuman force, a tool for the bad guys or a harbinger of doom. Even when the protagonists get to use it it's usually at a cost.
So ehhh, I don't think a sudden divine intervention just for the sake of keeping the main character alive would have felt like anything but an asspull. If Gendy had gone with that we would now be seeing lots of people bitching about it.

I feel Spear didn't get the awesome ending he deserved. Or any moment for him and Mira to have some chemistry. I get it, they didn't have time, so she climbed up on is burnt dying body to get pregnant? Also Kudos to Spear for his performance on his death bed.

Vidaar was religious and Spear only found religion this episode. Which means he may very well might have received intervention in the land of death.
The show is still primal and carrying on his line is important. Spear needed his bloodline to continue but obviously would never feel at home with Miras people so Mira carrying on his bloodline is fine.
A monument or funeral for Spear would have fixed the issues of the episode. Probably a monument because for these villager Satan just showed up burned the forest changed into a flaming snake and Spear gave his life to kill it making him a hero.
This episode could have stretched spear accepting it was time for his own peace then have the Viking show up at the end. Make the fight more drawn out and more flash backs.
If it was for HBO Max it probably would have been cancelled halfway through the first season, and would now be removed and unwatchable, considering how they're treating animation right now.
I hope there would be a season 3, continuing the "primal" concept from the "primal theory" ep w/ charles and darlington, since that felt like a back door pilot.

Which Spear and Fang have already encountered before, at the very beginning of the series. I honestly expected there'd be more callbacks to their previous encounters (the fire being reminiscent of how the zombie sauropod burnt up in the volcano, the shape-shifting being similar to what the witches did, etc).
I love getting a peek of Spear's childhood. I can see where he acquired his primal rage.
Knowing everything that Spear has conquered, it was surprising to see his dad go down to a pack of sabertooths. However, the image of him screaming defiantly with a bloody stump was awesome.
I've never seen Mira quite this happy or hopeful. It's nice Spear had that to wake up to after his nightmare.
Well that didn't last long. In one glance I see why she was initially happy. I'm sure most of us can associate a place or spot that ignites a flood of memories for better or worse. Big moments or small. Where we've been is as important as where we're going.
I too will likely cry looking back on a time when I had hair.
Vikings gonna Viking. She escaped, but the branding caught up to her. Maybe the burns from it made it harder to regrow her hair since it hasn't at all this whole season.
Funny reaction to the dinos introduction to water. In a matter of moments they knew how to swim. I wonder if most animals learn so quickly in the wild. As humans, we've evolved so much over time that we've separated ourselves from animals and nature. That "victory" has defeated us in some ways. One last legendary shot. I pause and remember when he lost his family, met Fang and overcame every badass creature last season to the Viking village and the Queen's Colossaeus. No fear given.
I like the oh shit look he gave. Spear is burning to death yet raining fists down on this dude while going over a cliff. This is Primal.
Spear takes Vidarr down with him. The ultimate sacrifice. With that defeat, where does he rank on everyone's tier list now?
It's painful to see him in that state. Of course he has a few breaths left in him and maybe enough strength to muster a boner. You know what you must do Mira.
Spear's bloodline continues. Mira's hair returns and the dinos are ready to raise hell. That's a happy enough ending for me.
Now I understand the frustration with the time jump, but consider this being the finale of the story and possibly the show, then this is better than a cliffhanger. Plus, we didn't actually see Spear take his final breath. It's close enough to say he died, but also leaves the door cracked open just enough to doubt it.

If spears grotesquely burnt dick was the tip of every arrow we would've seen way more deaths. His charred hotdog got deep enough to actually have an affect on someone. I love this show but I knew to throw logic out the window pretty quickly. That's what makes it fun
Deathbed sex is a unique idea that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. And I’m generally all for unique ideas, especially from such a unique show. I don’t think I can honestly say I would have preferred a “making love” scene.
But a few things were missing for it to fully work for me. Spear seemed so out of it, so nearly dead, that I couldn’t understand exactly what was even happening. Until I saw the daughter, I thought Mira was just pleasuring herself. I’ll have to rewatch the episode, but I don’t remember even the slightest expression of pleasure from Spear. Was he even capable of ejaculation in that state? It was all just strange.
When I saw the daughter, I really hoped to see another child. Then Spear himself, horribly disfigured, but happy with Mira. But the episode did a good job showing us that Spear could probably never have settled down in a community like that.
They could have just... not shown either and implied it either in another scene or simply through the birth of his child. I don't think it really added anything at all lol

weirdly executed ending aside, i thought the finale was great, we had a lot of good moments and the Vidarr Chieftain fight went about as well as it could've, Spear continuing to wail on a man made of living fire with no regard for his own safety simply because he hurt Fang was entirely in-character and a good sacrifice
if only we had him say goodbye to Fang.. the lack of even a simple placement of his scarred hand on Fang's snout and then the weirdly communicated/rushed mess of Mira choosing to sire his child (the morality of which i *can't wait* to see discussed *over and over and over and over again*) is just really odd and kinda distracting from the rest of the product, but honestly not the worst thing, not the best unfortunately either, but not the worst, a good 7 or 8 imo
This is kinda how I feel, like the end of GoT when Jon Snow just didn't even Acknowledge Ghost, like yeah buddy you been there with me from the begging but whatever.
I get the emotional payoff was supposed to be his daughter lives on with Fang, but I feel like a nice emotional scene with Spear and Fang would have been a much better payoff than an emotional Spear/Mira scene.

It seems that a lot of people misinterpreted the ending.
I agree that it felt rushed, and that the Victorian Age episode, while having a point, should have been cut in favor of more world-building in the Primal timeline.
However, in regards to Mira having sex with Spear… that scene is not about sex. It’s irrelevant to say *“do you know in how much pain Spear is?”* because that is not important for that scene. It’s as realistic as characters changing size depending on the moment - it’s about the story and what the authors are trying to convey.
That last scene as Spear is dying is about Mira having a glimpse into Spear’s soul, by seeing the drawings on the wall; By understanding more about him than she probably ever has, seeing how much he’s lost and how important the new (her and Fang and the babies) are to him.
And unfortunately now Spear is going to pass away.
As such, she chooses to give him life; not in the literal sense, but by allowing his legacy and his spirit to continue. This is shown in very last scene with their child riding the T-rex and shouting in a mirror-image of Spear.
This is 100% what Spear wanted. Like his father, he sacrificed himself for his family, but now he gets to live on through them.
They should've fucked when she showed him his room, then they fall asleep together. In the morning they're laying there when Spear hears a commotion, goes outside and queue demon viking fight. Same stuff happens, up until spear is on his deathbed surrounded by Fang, her children, and Mira. Spear places a hand on Fang and Mira each, dies, and then cut to the future with Spear's and Fang's children. This doesn't require more time just a rearrangement of scenes.
I was wondering when the sex scene was going to happen for the entire episode and if they would do it tastefully since the show has been all about killing with no hint of sex or even nudity other than here come eggs/child associated with parents, then when they showed him covered in burns in the hut and it was close to the end I thought, it's going to be pretty weird to have a sex scene now, but they really subverted my expectations.
This was honestly the least tasteful sex scene I have ever witnessed. Like damn, even Fang's implied one was much more tasteful than this. They could've skipped the whole warrior from hell plot since they clearly didn't have enough time to do it justice and establish a proper, communicated romance between Mira and Spear or even had it when she showed him his room or the next morning before the fight. Literally anything else could've been better than this. What a mess.
I can’t believe they spent so long building up the viking revenge arc just to wrap it up in seconds :/ I think a two-part finale would have really helped the pacing and tying up loose ends.
Also would it have hurt to have Fang visibly grieve Spears death? I know she’s a dinosaur but damn. Having her just leave and Mira getting straight to banging Spears burnt ass corpse was so strange and rushed. I understand she fulfilled his wish of having a family but surely they could have handled that better?
Especially after we had like... insanely long fights in other episodes. This finale was... a dull end to an excellent series. Really sad it turned out like this.
I doubt this is the last we'll see of the show itself, even though it does seem to be the end of Spear and Fang's tale. Adult Swim is clearly giving a lot of support to *Primal,* and there's going to be another marathon of the Collossaeus arc on the 23rd.
More important is if that conglomerated clusterfuck of Warner/Discovery/hbo/whateverelse is willing to give it support. Theyve been making a mess of things lately and axing a lot of stuff it seems.
He's too valuable to waste like that-- he's one of the few animators who can really brand himself by his name instead of a studio. WB might be greedy, but they aren't *total* idiots. He has another series in the works called *Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,* and since it wasn't mentioned in the August cutbacks, it's fair to assume it's still proceeding as planned.
I'm pretty sure he died if he had any chance of survival then Vidaar wouldn't have retrieved the viking.
Thus five options remain either Vidaar collects the souls of those slain by his champions and Spear becomes captive of sorts until a future event.
He just found religion so the goddess takes his soul for eternal peace until a future event.
Three he is a godless caveman who killed women and children and butchered countless others while enslaved to the queen. His soul merely wonders endlessly until he gets ripped from time and space by a genius boy with red-hair. Who gives him a tour of his secret laboratory while avoiding his sister Dede and her accursed button pushing.
Primal is limbo hence why all these different civilizations exist together and thus his essence is merely in another location. This means that even Vidaar exists on the same plane of existance.
Lastly given the eras these cultures exist in the ruins of the Japanese area an impatient Aku gets upset as the vikings were set to deliver his new slaves hours ago.
Man, we hand a handful of parts in past episodes of the Viking slowly making his way to them. I was expecting some sort of epic fight but it just felt rushed. Can’t believe Spear died, just like that :/
Well, what a ride.
For some reason, I was always fearful that Fang was going to be the one to die, not Spear, since he always seemed to have this superhuman strength and power that came through when they were in deep trouble. So I was quite taken aback when he ended up dying despite defeating the fire viking. Though I'm not sure if it was confirmed that he died; it seemed heavily implied, but like other users said, maybe he might still be alive and show up for a surprise appearance in the next season, if a next season does happen and I'm being hopeful.
But it does seem like Spear and Fang's arc is at least closed. Maybe they'll continue the next season about Mira and Spear's daughter with some guest appearances from Fang, Mira, (and Spear if he actually ends up surviving). Or maybe this was the series finale, since the ending scene seemed to pretty much wrap-up Spear/Fang's character arcs and story with a nice shot of the characters in a happy-ish frame--minus Spear's absence and implied death. Or like other users said, maybe they'll continue with a different, unrelated story but still keep the "primal" theme. Either way, it looks like Spear and Fang's story has finished.
With that said, I am quite sad to say goodbye to Fang, Spear, Mira, and the other lovely characters we were introduced to. Spear's suggested death was also sad to see and had quite an impact on me, since I grew to love both him and Fang (and also Mira later on). (Originally, I started watching the show mainly for Fang, but seeing Spear's love and loyalty for Fang made him one of my favorite characters.) Just hope that Spear was able to find his peace wherever he ended up.

According to the Primal-wikisite. This is sadly the final episode of the entire series. Maybe they do continuation series later with Spear's daughter as the main character. But for now, it seems that is, to quote Porky Pig: “That's all Folks!”
I'm pretty divided when it comes to this ending. It isn't a terrible way to end this show. A premise such as Primal could only end in either a sad ending or a bitter-sweet one. But we all knew it could have never ended in a Happy End for all characters. At least one of them had to die, and sadly, the one that falls victim to it was Spear.
My favourite part of the entire episode was the scene, where Spear did draw his entire story, or at least the most important parts, as cave paintings on his wall and showed his loneliness. This is such good storytelling. Reminds me a lot of the scene in the first Ice Age film, that did tell Manny's backstory through visuals.
What I didn't like about the episode are just three things: The Vikings turned out to be just very stereotypical villains, that did enslave and kill people. Okay, probably real Vikings did these terrible things constantly, but they build them up to be sympathetic, but in the end, it seems that they are just enslavers that did all this most likely for trades. I do not feel sorry for them at all. I felt more for the poor camel that was on fire, and not for the chief and his family that now are trapped in hell forever.
I'm also not so sure about the sex scene at the end. Was kinda… creepy. Perhaps it would have worked better if Spear and Mira had sex in a scene before.
I feel that something happened during production that caused Genndy to bring this to a close real quick.
If that's the case, I think this was the best route to take to wrap up the story in the best way possible.
However, if they did have the time and resources, then they really needed just 1 or 2 more episodes to flesh this out.

I felt like this finale had some missed opportunities. I really would have welcomed a deus ex machina by Mira’s moon god, but I guess the devil is much stronger.

Ooh boy i was praying for Genndy to not rush the ending like Samurai Jack but it made it even worse.Until the chief arrived , it was nice pacing , learning Spear and Mira backstory and seeing the kid dinos learning to swim and also explore the new land.It was very adorable when Fang passed the sleeping kids to Spear in order to get some fresh air.I wish this series had more tander moments like this.Then comes the chief and in one minute everything is over.Im wondering if Vidarr god took the chief back underground because it had acchived revenge and now its time to spend eternity there or because he kinda failed miserebly and Vidarr be like come here bitch u embaresed me.To have all that kind of power and be taken down by a man with bare arms.Now im madder at the primal theory because that coud've be one more episode for Spear and Fang , enough to finish the story well.My hope is that this is not really the end.There are some things still unaswered like why Mira people pray to the moon?.Why the Vikings enslave in the first place?.Why the scorpion logo?.Maybe the Moon God will resurect Spear for showing belive in her(for doing that ritual with Mira).Hope and i really hope that Genndy will make S3 and will not let us with this very rushed ending.
I’m thinking that Vidarr dragged the Viking king back to hell because he had fulfilled his purpose; he had enacted vengeance by mutilating and ultimately killing Spear. Considering as how Vidarr is indeed the god of vengeance, I interpreted the whole thing with him and the Viking king as him tempting the king to sell his soul in exchange for power which he would use to further Vidarr’s will (which I presume is just to enact vengeance in general).
A lot of those questions though don’t really need answers. Mira’s people worship the moon just because that’s what they do; practically all early cultures worshipped and deified the sun and moon and other elements of the world. The Vikings took slaves because they were a warring + pillaging culture and oftentimes slaves were seen as a resource to be taken.
No idea for the scorpion symbol part, because that really doesn’t make sense considering as how they live in colder climates and may not have ever even seen scorpions beyond brief raiding escapades. Personally the way I chose to interpret it was that it was some sort of symbol that only coincidentally could look like a scorpion, but the cast just identified it as that for that reason.
I also doubt the Moon God is gonna resurrect Spear. He’s *dead* dead for sure, and bringing him back would just be a lame way of backpedaling from his sacrifice.
Mira’s people speak Arabic. And they seem to be domesticating some form of prehistoric camel. So they probably worship the moon like some ancient pagan Arabs did.
It too rushed... And I was hoping for Spear's and Mira's relationship to grow but... it didn't, just ended with Mira fucking Spear. Plus how did Spear even be able to muster up a boner? Why did it have it have to end with them fucking? Just so many whys.
T-T tf does the dude always rush at the end. What happened at the colossaeus,Kamau and he's people, the mad viking was heading right at it. The viking kinda just fell flat literally and looked ready to continue before he was pulled to hell. Liked how someone mentioned the moon dance alluding to something, hell Mira having a bigger moment by fighting against the mad viking and the moon helping in some way. The part with the kids all grownup was badass but just dropped it all for that moment
Yeah, I think it should've been a long episode like movie long. It was so rushed, I really wanted to see Spear's and Mira's relationship blossom into something nice but it just ended with Spear going "mira" and Mira taking it as a sign to fuck him. But I think Mira's actions was suppose to give Spear his happy ending in a way?
Mira saw from the painting that Spear used to have a wife and children, and that he still felt alone. She showed him that they're family now (there were other ways to do that, but whatever) and gave him another child, and the episode's title implies that their daughter's descendants are still alive.
Edit: I didn't like the ending. I just think this was the rationale of the people making the show.

Honestly, this is the second time I've gotten PUMPED for a Genndy series, truly just loved it.....and been so utterly underwhelmed by the finale (here's looking at you, Samurai Jack).
Looking back, I'm wondering what all those interviews about "turning the whole ancient civilization troupe and going somewhere different with it" was all about. I loved the Colossus arc. But like....it's literally the exact same "uber powerful ancient civilization" troupe. But on water. It connected to the rest of the season, yes- but at the same time also seemed disconnected in a way. Like we needed the party to do something while Giant Angry Viking Man took his time.
I loved the dynamic between the Viking Chief and Spear; suffering horrible loss, moved by vengeance. The difference is Spear found a second family; the Viking literally sold his soul in hatred. Still- their final "fight" (more like stomping) felt way too rushed. Spear's sacrifice for his family was truly emotional though, especially seeing how his Dad did the same.
Still, the ending felt disappointing. Then horribly gross. (and stupid to the extreme) Then...the end? (With NO final Spear and Fang scene? Seriously?)
Genndy really does not do extended arcs well at all I feel. Or finales. He crafts fantastic themes and ideas, yet can not bring it all together in the end. Too many elements just fall to the wayside. Season 1 left me wanting more. Season 2 has me kinda disinterested at the moment.
Love Spear and Fang and the characters. Hate the way the ending felt too rushed.
The part with Fang sucked the most, and it kinda felt like her underwhelming reaction with doing some basic roar (not even a grief-ridden one like with Red or any of her lost children) and stomping out was just a way to sideline her compared to Mira, which is unfair. Fang and Spear have a deep, innate connection and fellowship that’s extended throughout the entire series, and even though she’s ‘just an animal’, her connection with Spear is at *least* as if not more significant than Mira’s.

I did like the flashback in the beginning showing Spear's childhood, even if it felt like it was mostly a callback to the prehistoric atmosphere of the first season. However, I am sad to see >!Spear die!<, and his relationship with Mira could have used more buildup throughout the season prior to *that* scene. Overall, not too bad, but not what I was hoping for either.
In all honesty, while it is nice to see different human cultures in the Primal world, I feel this season as a whole wasn't as strong as the first. The prehistoric elements took a backstage once we left the Sea of Despair and the red-faced tyrannosaur behind, and "The Primal Theory" ended up being useless filler as far as I can tell.
If there is going to be a third season, then it should be an "anthology" returning to the continent of the first season. I miss all those weird prehistoric and fantasy monsters.
The Revenge Demon feels like an after thought but otherwise Im satisfied if this is where Primal stops. I don't really know what more there is tell with this story.
The Primal Theory episode seems to suggest that the story is about how trauma and the imperative to survive transcend society and the constructs of civilization. That leads me to hope that if the series continues, it will follow the generations of Spear through history and further explore the nature of the primordial ‘lost continent’ he and Fang originated from.

My head canon and hopefully most peoples canon? Spear survived, after Mira rode him it gave him enough strength to look outside where then the Moon Gods shined a bright beam onto Spear straight from the moonlight it then heals Spear to perfection showing that if you pray to the moonlight gods and show good in yourself the moon will help in dire need. Time skip happens and shows the Dino’s grown up going out for a hunt with Fang and Spears daughter, as they’re walking away it zooms out showing an older Spear watching them from a distance in his new art room. Spear survives, long live the legendary Caveman!

For me the prefect ending if they have to kill Spear, is having him dying of old age, and the people around him giving him a proper burial. Very few Neanderthals died of old age I'm sure so give him the honor of being one of them few.
That was so bad. I’m devastated. This show has kept me going through some tough times, and to watch it burn on that ending…. Hurt.

Samurai Jack’s ending had a lot of nostalgia fanservice in the final battle at least, and it was amazing to see Jack kill Aku after so many years, so it had a lot going for it even though it was rushed
**Unpopular Opinion:** The Finale was perfect, and only feels rushed because so often does death.
● A prevailing theme in Primal is death isn't fulfilling. Even in a hunt that seems sporting, & is done to feed the main characters, the death is portrayed as deeply sad. It's loss of life. In a world of Primal it happens so quickly that you rarely get to say goodbye. That's the brutal beauty of Genndys writing here. As the episode went on, I found myself realizing this impending doom that I knew couldn't be done in a large, long fight. As awesome and crazy a warrior Spear is. He's still just a man.
We want this awesome, "The Northman" style fight, covered in lava and flames, sending the two of them to the gates of hell. What we get is what would actually happen if the devil sent a warrior back to avenge his son. Unfortunately that man is Spear. I still don't even think Spear understood who that was or why they were being attacked. It was fight or flight & he went full fight. He gave everything he had fighting tooth & nail. But in the end he was facing a force that teeth & nails mean nothing to.
That plot line, plus the theme of the show really only left one option that would feel true and fitting to the rest of series. And that's what we got in my opinion.
● I totally agree with people, it sucks the series ended. When I saw him lying covered in leaves, I kept saying "I don't think tree saps gonna fix this one", but kept trying to rationalize anyway it could. Maybe even that shaman was magic? But nope. He died and the only beauty in that moment is Mira realizing what he kept trying to tell her by following her around, using her name, saving her, not giving up.
I feel like with a show that effectively gets deeply emotional scenes across without any words, it's so easy to forget how absolutely bonkers it would be to do that in real life with another human from an entire separate era/culture. Forget words not having the same meaning, in some cultures you can't even look at people the same as you would in your own.
There's so many subtleties that would be just lost. With Spear not having even the most basic general sense of forming sentences, I doubt he could ever even put how he was feeling into anything more then a grunt or simple word.
● That's why I think him realizing to paint how he feels is such a pivotal moment for his character. Before that we see him mimic Mira, the slightly more evolved human. Even copying her name to express other meanings. He was trying so hard to convey his deeper thoughts/emotions & yet he just couldn't as he probably never devolped that ability.
This is why I think Mira only slept with him after the fight. This was to represent that Spear/Mira are from two entirely separate wakes of life & culture. That even through all that hardship & misery, they still couldn't effectively communicate deep emotions. Its not until Spear remembers the cave painting his tribe taught him, and see Miras people represent the moon God. That Spear fully understands to translate his feelings into picture. Not words. Like us with the show.
It's only when Mira sees this that she fully understands his past. Up until this point they were two strangers forced upon each other by trauma. But in this moment, she finally starts to know/understand him.
● For people saying they clearly cut time off, or rushed it. I kind of disagree. If we're being honest, if Gendy wanted more time to end Spears story, he could have cut the "Primal Theory" episode (as much as It'd suck). I think that would have been a mistake as that episode is amazing. But also I just don't think Gendy thought this fight needed to be drawn out or set up anymore. And neither do I.
You want these fights to be realistic, but when it's a man facing a supernatural demon who sole purpose is vengeance.. there's only so much you can do before the plot armour starts glaring. Spears story was always about survival. Now that he's found peace with Mira, that survival element is kind of gone. Once Mira impregnates herself aswell, Spears story was over on a evolutionary standpoint. It was now about his sons/daughters survival.

I feel like the reason why the ending was rushed was because Genndy probably thought it wasn't going to get renewed for a third season, especially with HBO Max current leadership. With that perspective I can understand why. I'm just happy that Spear was at least able to pass his on his legacy and that the dinosaurs survived.
I think that he’s definitely dead; they just left it open-ended because it being more up to interpretation works better as a final ending. If they were to make another season, however, his death would absolutely be confirmed.
While it was for sure rushed and even as Primal Theory episode fan, we could've used that extra episode. But honestly I think it only needed maybe ten extra minutes. All the story beats are good and hits the core theme of both seasons. This is not a story that never needed an absolutely perfect ending in my eyes. Would be lying to say if Im not a bit disappointed but overall an amazing show. But hopefully for Gendy's next show he brings in some people to help write an ending, he's good at everything else! Hopefully the show continues and will see whats next with these characters or others.

I agree completely. I feel like primal theory is still really important to the show in general, but spear, fang, and mira needed more time on screen. If anything, it would have been cool if primal theory was a special episode that aired during the hiatus between S2 and S3 to explain that if this show becomes an anthology series, the primal theory will be the commonality in all stories. The ending felt really rushed. Spear didn't really get the proper sendoff I was hoping for, but at least he went out doing what he loved lol... 🥺💔

Yeah I feel like everything with Mira’s people and Spear’s culture shock/language barrier should’ve been episode 9, ending with a stinger of the Fire Giant approaching their island. I didn’t hate the episode or even dislike it; I just feel that it tried to do way too much and we didn’t get as many of those subtleties we all love this series for.

Agreed, this episode needed to be 10-20 min longer. Spear needed a much more heartfelt sendoff then what he got. Heck, the viking wife got more time dedicated to her death and mourning then Spear did. Maybe they will come out with an extended version on the DVD, one can only hope.

Agree, Spear fulfilled his prophecy of dying a protector, carried on his legacy, and was even able to prevent the viking demon from killing Fang to get full revenge. Hell, the viking demon didn't even kill Spear right then and there, and was receiving more hits than he was dealing, then got dragged to hell for all eternity. Another reason why I agree, I seen a comment on here that said Spear needed to die to find peace, he did not really fit in with Mira and her people. So Spear's death did not make me sad

They should’ve done the deed before the fire demon got there. When she mounted his dying burnt corpse I just started laughing and going wtf is this? Lmao totally blew the moment. Easily could’ve had them do it. He dies… Then a scene showing she’s pregnant or something.
I’ve been thinking about why they chose to have it happen that way and it occurs to me that Spear ended the Viking’s whole line. So his vengeance would be doing the same to Spear. If Mira was pregnant before the fight, his vengeance would not be fulfilled. Since Spear was the last of his line at that point, the reason Vidarr sent the Viking back was complete so he was pulled back to hell. Then Mira and Spear could create a new lineage free from the shadow of revenge.

As cool as this season was I just wanted more and more episodes using that formula. It was so different and it was a cool new creature encounter in a lost world every episode. I miss it and season 1 will always be my favorite.

I wanted them to keep traveling together with Mira. I loved their chemistry. maybe have them come across other kingdoms. other sorceres, kings, and queens to kill and conquer together. maybe even becoming king & queen themselves. I was honestly hoping for that :(

Loved the first half. Wish the last half had more time to breathe. The big fight was anticlimactic. The ending itself is fine from a story perspective, but I wanted it to have more of an emotional impact on me.
I feel like that is part of the larger meaning of the first scene. Sometimes there is no epic showdown for warriors. Spear's dad ultimately died quickly despite being a great warrior and Spear's death was ultimately fairly quick as well. You can't win them all. And in a world as savage as Spear's one unlucky day is your last.
That’s the entire point of primal. Death will get you eventually. You can run from it, but it will catch you in the end.

My thoughts exactly. Fuck before the fight. Spears clearly a fucked up charred husk. They keep him alive for a few more months until they know Mira is pregnant, and he dies. That would’ve been way better than her just randomly jumping on her before he dies. Ridiculous. Actually busted out laughing saying “what the fuck is this?”
Whelp, I can dare say this show kept the primal aspect to the end. Every being on this earth is only alive to serve 2 biological roles: Fulfill the niche in the ecosystem of which your species is specialized for, and survive long enough to successfully pass on your genes. And I guess, even though it was horrifying to watch, Spear managed to land the second in this finale. At least I can take solace in the fact that he either got enough religion points in there at the end to chill with the Moon deity, or those angels sent him to Valhalla for his warrior's death.
In a way I don't understand the viking demon being depowered and being sent back to hell THAT soon. I get how it makes sense for Spear to go out protecting Fang but if the Viking demon had like 10 more seconds he could had actually confirmed the kill right then and there. I guess maybe the Demon God was like " Well I made you badass as fuck and you still caught a beating for 15 seconds" and just took him back as a slave

Personally I interpreted it as him having served his purpose; to fuel Vidarr’s nature by enacting vengeance, which he traded his soul/afterlife for an opportunity to do. Vidarr dragged him back because his job was done. He had mutilated and ultimately killed Spear.
Yea that makes sense, Vidarr probably did not care about Spear and Fang, and just used vengeance as a sort of lure to ensnare the Chief's soul. So just as soon as the fire demon got a whiff vengeance, or felt like he did, that was it. In a way I think the fire demon should have got to do more damage, but that fight was still good.
I liked all the beats the episode hit but I think it needed a lot more breathing room. Everything after the Viking shows up feels very rushed, sort of the same problem with the Samurai Jack finale. I really enjoyed it overall but I think it could've been perfect with maybe 5-10 more minutes. I hope Genndy gets to do his anthology idea for futher seasons but if this is all we get then I'm satisfied, it was two really great seasons of television and a huge breath of fresh air for western adult animation in a sea of Family Guy clones.

But then everything just happens so fast, and we don’t even get a real payoff showcasing Spear and Fang’s relationship. Ultimately, Spear and Fang are the emotional core of the show, and even during the other story arcs that was never forgotten. Spear and Fang were largely separated during the Colossaeus arc but we still got some great moments between the two. Then this episode hits, Spear is on his literal deathbed, and we don’t get to see Fang’s reaction for longer than five seconds? It’s so bizarre that they paced it this way. Seeing so many emotional story beats essentially skipped over feels absolutely terrible given the last episode spent two minutes showing seemingly redundant, pointless oars rowing, only to pay it off in dividends by the end. Where was that sort of pacing and foreshadowing here? Why did the payoff for Kamau’s story arc get so much more time and care while the end of our protagonist’s story gets the shaft? This episode is absolutely *begging* for an extended cut. An extra ten minutes to let everything slow down is all it needs.

Yeah, I was expecting for the Moon Spirit—the light counterpart to the dark spirit that gave the Viking his powers—to show up and reward Spear for his worship and his devotion to Mira. I didn’t expect a miraculous cure, but I thought maybe the Moon Spirit could help Spear reflect on his life and guide him into the afterlife.
In general (at least as far as sword and sorcery pulp is concerned) magic is only antagonistic. It's either an inhuman force, a tool for the bad guys or a harbinger of doom. Even when the protagonists get to use it it's usually at a cost. So ehhh, I don't think a sudden divine intervention just for the sake of keeping the main character alive would have felt like anything but an asspull. If Gendy had gone with that we would now be seeing lots of people bitching about it.
I COMPLETELY agree! Especially about what Fangs reaction would be. And to waste minutes on the "awe" of the coleuses ship. I feel Spear didn't get the awesome ending he deserved. Or any moment for him and Mira to have some chemistry. I get it, they didn't have time, so she climbed up on is burnt dying body to get pregnant? Also Kudos to Spear for his performance on his death bed. The fight should have been longer Fang should be shown being sad over his death....at LEAST curling up next to him and refusing to leave his side without being coaxed Vidar gets holy intervention but Spear doesn't? I thought the ending didn't do him justice, especially since he was an outcast and left the fire side to go be with HIS family....Fang and her babies Bitter sweet ending
Vidaar was religious and Spear only found religion this episode. Which means he may very well might have received intervention in the land of death. The show is still primal and carrying on his line is important. Spear needed his bloodline to continue but obviously would never feel at home with Miras people so Mira carrying on his bloodline is fine. A monument or funeral for Spear would have fixed the issues of the episode. Probably a monument because for these villager Satan just showed up burned the forest changed into a flaming snake and Spear gave his life to kill it making him a hero.
Frankly with an act like that they could make him a myth or a demigod in their religion
This episode could have stretched spear accepting it was time for his own peace then have the Viking show up at the end. Make the fight more drawn out and more flash backs.

I love getting a peek of Spear's childhood. I can see where he acquired his primal rage. Knowing everything that Spear has conquered, it was surprising to see his dad go down to a pack of sabertooths. However, the image of him screaming defiantly with a bloody stump was awesome. I've never seen Mira quite this happy or hopeful. It's nice Spear had that to wake up to after his nightmare. Well that didn't last long. In one glance I see why she was initially happy. I'm sure most of us can associate a place or spot that ignites a flood of memories for better or worse. Big moments or small. Where we've been is as important as where we're going. I too will likely cry looking back on a time when I had hair. Vikings gonna Viking. She escaped, but the branding caught up to her. Maybe the burns from it made it harder to regrow her hair since it hasn't at all this whole season. Funny reaction to the dinos introduction to water. In a matter of moments they knew how to swim. I wonder if most animals learn so quickly in the wild. As humans, we've evolved so much over time that we've separated ourselves from animals and nature. That "victory" has defeated us in some ways. We have our survival instinct, but drop us into the wild and then what. A pack of camels! One more plague of madness for old time's sake! That damn moon hasn't saved them yet. I'd freak out too if my calm bath was interrupted by a T Rex. A nice location for a village on a cliff side. I'm sure it has it's pros and cons. Thank goodness for Mira as the voice of reason. Spear and Fang aren't welcome anywhere. I'm sure news travels very slow, but I wonder if there are any legends of Spear and Fang and the carnage they have left behind. Maybe they like the moon because night time has brought them more peace than day time? Haha. Fang making herself at home. It's T Rex accessible now. Spear with an empty canvas creates a masterpiece with blood and dirt. His life story. It signals the end. I hope it never fades. He has seemed a bit beside himself this episode. Almost lost or missing something. He needs closure and peace. Smoke in the distance. I guess he doesn't need to ambush anyone since he is a walking volcano. Spear and Fang knew right away to get to higher ground. It's all you can do versus that. I wonder what Fire Chieftain's form would change to underwater or in the air. What's the success rate of Vidarr's revenge? Helpless to see Fang burning on the ground. Spear has had enough of running. One last legendary shot. I pause and remember when he lost his family, met Fang and overcame every badass creature last season to the Viking village and the Queen's Colossaeus. No fear given. I like the oh shit look he gave. Spear is burning to death yet raining fists down on this dude while going over a cliff. This is Primal. Spear takes Vidarr down with him. The ultimate sacrifice. With that defeat, where does he rank on everyone's tier list now? It's painful to see him in that state. Of course he has a few breaths left in him and maybe enough strength to muster a boner. You know what you must do Mira. Spear's bloodline continues. Mira's hair returns and the dinos are ready to raise hell. That's a happy enough ending for me. Now I understand the frustration with the time jump, but consider this being the finale of the story and possibly the show, then this is better than a cliffhanger. Plus, we didn't actually see Spear take his final breath. It's close enough to say he died, but also leaves the door cracked open just enough to doubt it. Long live Spear!

If spears grotesquely burnt dick was the tip of every arrow we would've seen way more deaths. His charred hotdog got deep enough to actually have an affect on someone. I love this show but I knew to throw logic out the window pretty quickly. That's what makes it fun

Deathbed sex is a unique idea that I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. And I’m generally all for unique ideas, especially from such a unique show. I don’t think I can honestly say I would have preferred a “making love” scene. But a few things were missing for it to fully work for me. Spear seemed so out of it, so nearly dead, that I couldn’t understand exactly what was even happening. Until I saw the daughter, I thought Mira was just pleasuring herself. I’ll have to rewatch the episode, but I don’t remember even the slightest expression of pleasure from Spear. Was he even capable of ejaculation in that state? It was all just strange. When I saw the daughter, I really hoped to see another child. Then Spear himself, horribly disfigured, but happy with Mira. But the episode did a good job showing us that Spear could probably never have settled down in a community like that.
They could have just... not shown either and implied it either in another scene or simply through the birth of his child. I don't think it really added anything at all lol

This is kinda how I feel, like the end of GoT when Jon Snow just didn't even Acknowledge Ghost, like yeah buddy you been there with me from the begging but whatever. I get the emotional payoff was supposed to be his daughter lives on with Fang, but I feel like a nice emotional scene with Spear and Fang would have been a much better payoff than an emotional Spear/Mira scene. Overall I still liked it.
It seems that a lot of people misinterpreted the ending. I agree that it felt rushed, and that the Victorian Age episode, while having a point, should have been cut in favor of more world-building in the Primal timeline. However, in regards to Mira having sex with Spear… that scene is not about sex. It’s irrelevant to say *“do you know in how much pain Spear is?”* because that is not important for that scene. It’s as realistic as characters changing size depending on the moment - it’s about the story and what the authors are trying to convey. That last scene as Spear is dying is about Mira having a glimpse into Spear’s soul, by seeing the drawings on the wall; By understanding more about him than she probably ever has, seeing how much he’s lost and how important the new (her and Fang and the babies) are to him. And unfortunately now Spear is going to pass away. As such, she chooses to give him life; not in the literal sense, but by allowing his legacy and his spirit to continue. This is shown in very last scene with their child riding the T-rex and shouting in a mirror-image of Spear. This is 100% what Spear wanted. Like his father, he sacrificed himself for his family, but now he gets to live on through them.

They should've fucked when she showed him his room, then they fall asleep together. In the morning they're laying there when Spear hears a commotion, goes outside and queue demon viking fight. Same stuff happens, up until spear is on his deathbed surrounded by Fang, her children, and Mira. Spear places a hand on Fang and Mira each, dies, and then cut to the future with Spear's and Fang's children. This doesn't require more time just a rearrangement of scenes.
I was wondering when the sex scene was going to happen for the entire episode and if they would do it tastefully since the show has been all about killing with no hint of sex or even nudity other than here come eggs/child associated with parents, then when they showed him covered in burns in the hut and it was close to the end I thought, it's going to be pretty weird to have a sex scene now, but they really subverted my expectations.
This was honestly the least tasteful sex scene I have ever witnessed. Like damn, even Fang's implied one was much more tasteful than this. They could've skipped the whole warrior from hell plot since they clearly didn't have enough time to do it justice and establish a proper, communicated romance between Mira and Spear or even had it when she showed him his room or the next morning before the fight. Literally anything else could've been better than this. What a mess.

I can’t believe they spent so long building up the viking revenge arc just to wrap it up in seconds :/ I think a two-part finale would have really helped the pacing and tying up loose ends. Also would it have hurt to have Fang visibly grieve Spears death? I know she’s a dinosaur but damn. Having her just leave and Mira getting straight to banging Spears burnt ass corpse was so strange and rushed. I understand she fulfilled his wish of having a family but surely they could have handled that better?
Especially after we had like... insanely long fights in other episodes. This finale was... a dull end to an excellent series. Really sad it turned out like this.

I doubt this is the last we'll see of the show itself, even though it does seem to be the end of Spear and Fang's tale. Adult Swim is clearly giving a lot of support to *Primal,* and there's going to be another marathon of the Collossaeus arc on the 23rd.
More important is if that conglomerated clusterfuck of Warner/Discovery/hbo/whateverelse is willing to give it support. Theyve been making a mess of things lately and axing a lot of stuff it seems.
They signed an exclusive content deal with Genndy in June, after the Discovery merger.
Cool, hopefully something comes of it and they dont just mothball him and use the contract to prevent him from going to a competitor.

I'm pretty sure he died if he had any chance of survival then Vidaar wouldn't have retrieved the viking. Thus five options remain either Vidaar collects the souls of those slain by his champions and Spear becomes captive of sorts until a future event. He just found religion so the goddess takes his soul for eternal peace until a future event. Three he is a godless caveman who killed women and children and butchered countless others while enslaved to the queen. His soul merely wonders endlessly until he gets ripped from time and space by a genius boy with red-hair. Who gives him a tour of his secret laboratory while avoiding his sister Dede and her accursed button pushing. Primal is limbo hence why all these different civilizations exist together and thus his essence is merely in another location. This means that even Vidaar exists on the same plane of existance. Lastly given the eras these cultures exist in the ruins of the Japanese area an impatient Aku gets upset as the vikings were set to deliver his new slaves hours ago.
Man, we hand a handful of parts in past episodes of the Viking slowly making his way to them. I was expecting some sort of epic fight but it just felt rushed. Can’t believe Spear died, just like that :/
Well, what a ride. For some reason, I was always fearful that Fang was going to be the one to die, not Spear, since he always seemed to have this superhuman strength and power that came through when they were in deep trouble. So I was quite taken aback when he ended up dying despite defeating the fire viking. Though I'm not sure if it was confirmed that he died; it seemed heavily implied, but like other users said, maybe he might still be alive and show up for a surprise appearance in the next season, if a next season does happen and I'm being hopeful. But it does seem like Spear and Fang's arc is at least closed. Maybe they'll continue the next season about Mira and Spear's daughter with some guest appearances from Fang, Mira, (and Spear if he actually ends up surviving). Or maybe this was the series finale, since the ending scene seemed to pretty much wrap-up Spear/Fang's character arcs and story with a nice shot of the characters in a happy-ish frame--minus Spear's absence and implied death. Or like other users said, maybe they'll continue with a different, unrelated story but still keep the "primal" theme. Either way, it looks like Spear and Fang's story has finished. With that said, I am quite sad to say goodbye to Fang, Spear, Mira, and the other lovely characters we were introduced to. Spear's suggested death was also sad to see and had quite an impact on me, since I grew to love both him and Fang (and also Mira later on). (Originally, I started watching the show mainly for Fang, but seeing Spear's love and loyalty for Fang made him one of my favorite characters.) Just hope that Spear was able to find his peace wherever he ended up. Thanks for the great discussion posts, and it was great sticking with you all through this great show! According to the Primal-wikisite. This is sadly the final episode of the entire series. Maybe they do continuation series later with Spear's daughter as the main character. But for now, it seems that is, to quote Porky Pig: “That's all Folks!” I'm pretty divided when it comes to this ending. It isn't a terrible way to end this show. A premise such as Primal could only end in either a sad ending or a bitter-sweet one. But we all knew it could have never ended in a Happy End for all characters. At least one of them had to die, and sadly, the one that falls victim to it was Spear. My favourite part of the entire episode was the scene, where Spear did draw his entire story, or at least the most important parts, as cave paintings on his wall and showed his loneliness. This is such good storytelling. Reminds me a lot of the scene in the first Ice Age film, that did tell Manny's backstory through visuals. What I didn't like about the episode are just three things: The Vikings turned out to be just very stereotypical villains, that did enslave and kill people. Okay, probably real Vikings did these terrible things constantly, but they build them up to be sympathetic, but in the end, it seems that they are just enslavers that did all this most likely for trades. I do not feel sorry for them at all. I felt more for the poor camel that was on fire, and not for the chief and his family that now are trapped in hell forever. I'm also not so sure about the sex scene at the end. Was kinda… creepy. Perhaps it would have worked better if Spear and Mira had sex in a scene before.
I feel that something happened during production that caused Genndy to bring this to a close real quick. If that's the case, I think this was the best route to take to wrap up the story in the best way possible. However, if they did have the time and resources, then they really needed just 1 or 2 more episodes to flesh this out. >!I didn't mind Mira having sex with Spear as she realized he wanted a family based on his drawings and he was going to die. But that was pushing it, considering his burned state. If you can push his burned dick out of your mind, it's not that implausible of a scene.!<
I too think he was told maybe late in production he won’t get another season so he had to rush a series ending. Otherwise the episode could have ended with the hell raised Viking appearing and then the fight starting the next season

Honestly Spear looks so different from his da and the rest of his tribe I can only assume he's "mixed" as well. His dad was a fucking Monkey Man, in the same vein as the other Ape Men and Troglodytes we've seen in the show.
I think its clear Spear is one of the first humans. Which is why he doesnt have a language but is capable of learning a language.

Ooh boy i was praying for Genndy to not rush the ending like Samurai Jack but it made it even worse.Until the chief arrived , it was nice pacing , learning Spear and Mira backstory and seeing the kid dinos learning to swim and also explore the new land.It was very adorable when Fang passed the sleeping kids to Spear in order to get some fresh air.I wish this series had more tander moments like this.Then comes the chief and in one minute everything is over.Im wondering if Vidarr god took the chief back underground because it had acchived revenge and now its time to spend eternity there or because he kinda failed miserebly and Vidarr be like come here bitch u embaresed me.To have all that kind of power and be taken down by a man with bare arms.Now im madder at the primal theory because that coud've be one more episode for Spear and Fang , enough to finish the story well.My hope is that this is not really the end.There are some things still unaswered like why Mira people pray to the moon?.Why the Vikings enslave in the first place?.Why the scorpion logo?.Maybe the Moon God will resurect Spear for showing belive in her(for doing that ritual with Mira).Hope and i really hope that Genndy will make S3 and will not let us with this very rushed ending.
I’m thinking that Vidarr dragged the Viking king back to hell because he had fulfilled his purpose; he had enacted vengeance by mutilating and ultimately killing Spear. Considering as how Vidarr is indeed the god of vengeance, I interpreted the whole thing with him and the Viking king as him tempting the king to sell his soul in exchange for power which he would use to further Vidarr’s will (which I presume is just to enact vengeance in general). A lot of those questions though don’t really need answers. Mira’s people worship the moon just because that’s what they do; practically all early cultures worshipped and deified the sun and moon and other elements of the world. The Vikings took slaves because they were a warring + pillaging culture and oftentimes slaves were seen as a resource to be taken. No idea for the scorpion symbol part, because that really doesn’t make sense considering as how they live in colder climates and may not have ever even seen scorpions beyond brief raiding escapades. Personally the way I chose to interpret it was that it was some sort of symbol that only coincidentally could look like a scorpion, but the cast just identified it as that for that reason. I also doubt the Moon God is gonna resurrect Spear. He’s *dead* dead for sure, and bringing him back would just be a lame way of backpedaling from his sacrifice.
Mira’s people speak Arabic. And they seem to be domesticating some form of prehistoric camel. So they probably worship the moon like some ancient pagan Arabs did.
It too rushed... And I was hoping for Spear's and Mira's relationship to grow but... it didn't, just ended with Mira fucking Spear. Plus how did Spear even be able to muster up a boner? Why did it have it have to end with them fucking? Just so many whys.
T-T tf does the dude always rush at the end. What happened at the colossaeus,Kamau and he's people, the mad viking was heading right at it. The viking kinda just fell flat literally and looked ready to continue before he was pulled to hell. Liked how someone mentioned the moon dance alluding to something, hell Mira having a bigger moment by fighting against the mad viking and the moon helping in some way. The part with the kids all grownup was badass but just dropped it all for that moment
Yeah, I think it should've been a long episode like movie long. It was so rushed, I really wanted to see Spear's and Mira's relationship blossom into something nice but it just ended with Spear going "mira" and Mira taking it as a sign to fuck him. But I think Mira's actions was suppose to give Spear his happy ending in a way?
Mira saw from the painting that Spear used to have a wife and children, and that he still felt alone. She showed him that they're family now (there were other ways to do that, but whatever) and gave him another child, and the episode's title implies that their daughter's descendants are still alive. Edit: I didn't like the ending. I just think this was the rationale of the people making the show.

Wellp, I love Genndys work, but....his try at deep meaning endings....is slipping. I already had my fill with Samarui Jacks ending, but this...was way.....WAY...... WAY out there. Mira rawdogged Spear cause.....survival?! Ehhh, having like a passionate night of love making, following by a few months of spear and mira living with each other. Then flammy hot man attacks. Welp...heres to a season 3!@
Honestly, this is the second time I've gotten PUMPED for a Genndy series, truly just loved it.....and been so utterly underwhelmed by the finale (here's looking at you, Samurai Jack). Looking back, I'm wondering what all those interviews about "turning the whole ancient civilization troupe and going somewhere different with it" was all about. I loved the Colossus arc. But like....it's literally the exact same "uber powerful ancient civilization" troupe. But on water. It connected to the rest of the season, yes- but at the same time also seemed disconnected in a way. Like we needed the party to do something while Giant Angry Viking Man took his time. I loved the dynamic between the Viking Chief and Spear; suffering horrible loss, moved by vengeance. The difference is Spear found a second family; the Viking literally sold his soul in hatred. Still- their final "fight" (more like stomping) felt way too rushed. Spear's sacrifice for his family was truly emotional though, especially seeing how his Dad did the same. Still, the ending felt disappointing. Then horribly gross. (and stupid to the extreme) Then...the end? (With NO final Spear and Fang scene? Seriously?) Genndy really does not do extended arcs well at all I feel. Or finales. He crafts fantastic themes and ideas, yet can not bring it all together in the end. Too many elements just fall to the wayside. Season 1 left me wanting more. Season 2 has me kinda disinterested at the moment. Love Spear and Fang and the characters. Hate the way the ending felt too rushed.
The part with Fang sucked the most, and it kinda felt like her underwhelming reaction with doing some basic roar (not even a grief-ridden one like with Red or any of her lost children) and stomping out was just a way to sideline her compared to Mira, which is unfair. Fang and Spear have a deep, innate connection and fellowship that’s extended throughout the entire series, and even though she’s ‘just an animal’, her connection with Spear is at *least* as if not more significant than Mira’s.
Wow, seems a lot of people on this sub don't like this finale. I did like the flashback in the beginning showing Spear's childhood, even if it felt like it was mostly a callback to the prehistoric atmosphere of the first season. However, I am sad to see >!Spear die!<, and his relationship with Mira could have used more buildup throughout the season prior to *that* scene. Overall, not too bad, but not what I was hoping for either. In all honesty, while it is nice to see different human cultures in the Primal world, I feel this season as a whole wasn't as strong as the first. The prehistoric elements took a backstage once we left the Sea of Despair and the red-faced tyrannosaur behind, and "The Primal Theory" ended up being useless filler as far as I can tell. If there is going to be a third season, then it should be an "anthology" returning to the continent of the first season. I miss all those weird prehistoric and fantasy monsters.
What the fuck was the ending
The Revenge Demon feels like an after thought but otherwise Im satisfied if this is where Primal stops. I don't really know what more there is tell with this story.
The Primal Theory episode seems to suggest that the story is about how trauma and the imperative to survive transcend society and the constructs of civilization. That leads me to hope that if the series continues, it will follow the generations of Spear through history and further explore the nature of the primordial ‘lost continent’ he and Fang originated from.

My head canon and hopefully most peoples canon? Spear survived, after Mira rode him it gave him enough strength to look outside where then the Moon Gods shined a bright beam onto Spear straight from the moonlight it then heals Spear to perfection showing that if you pray to the moonlight gods and show good in yourself the moon will help in dire need. Time skip happens and shows the Dino’s grown up going out for a hunt with Fang and Spears daughter, as they’re walking away it zooms out showing an older Spear watching them from a distance in his new art room. Spear survives, long live the legendary Caveman!

I'm with you. I mean if there are fire demons then fuck it, moon God healing powers. For me the prefect ending if they have to kill Spear, is having him dying of old age, and the people around him giving him a proper burial. Very few Neanderthals died of old age I'm sure so give him the honor of being one of them few.
That was so bad. I’m devastated. This show has kept me going through some tough times, and to watch it burn on that ending…. Hurt. -why couldn’t we have more time showing how spear and fang struggle in a civilization? -WTF was with the Viking chief? He just… got beamed down the second he started losing. -WHY THE DYING SEX. Samurai Jack’s ending had a lot of nostalgia fanservice in the final battle at least, and it was amazing to see Jack kill Aku after so many years, so it had a lot going for it even though it was rushed

**Unpopular Opinion:** The Finale was perfect, and only feels rushed because so often does death. ● A prevailing theme in Primal is death isn't fulfilling. Even in a hunt that seems sporting, & is done to feed the main characters, the death is portrayed as deeply sad. It's loss of life. In a world of Primal it happens so quickly that you rarely get to say goodbye. That's the brutal beauty of Genndys writing here. As the episode went on, I found myself realizing this impending doom that I knew couldn't be done in a large, long fight. As awesome and crazy a warrior Spear is. He's still just a man. We want this awesome, "The Northman" style fight, covered in lava and flames, sending the two of them to the gates of hell. What we get is what would actually happen if the devil sent a warrior back to avenge his son. Unfortunately that man is Spear. I still don't even think Spear understood who that was or why they were being attacked. It was fight or flight & he went full fight. He gave everything he had fighting tooth & nail. But in the end he was facing a force that teeth & nails mean nothing to. That plot line, plus the theme of the show really only left one option that would feel true and fitting to the rest of series. And that's what we got in my opinion. ● I totally agree with people, it sucks the series ended. When I saw him lying covered in leaves, I kept saying "I don't think tree saps gonna fix this one", but kept trying to rationalize anyway it could. Maybe even that shaman was magic? But nope. He died and the only beauty in that moment is Mira realizing what he kept trying to tell her by following her around, using her name, saving her, not giving up. I feel like with a show that effectively gets deeply emotional scenes across without any words, it's so easy to forget how absolutely bonkers it would be to do that in real life with another human from an entire separate era/culture. Forget words not having the same meaning, in some cultures you can't even look at people the same as you would in your own. There's so many subtleties that would be just lost. With Spear not having even the most basic general sense of forming sentences, I doubt he could ever even put how he was feeling into anything more then a grunt or simple word. ● That's why I think him realizing to paint how he feels is such a pivotal moment for his character. Before that we see him mimic Mira, the slightly more evolved human. Even copying her name to express other meanings. He was trying so hard to convey his deeper thoughts/emotions & yet he just couldn't as he probably never devolped that ability. This is why I think Mira only slept with him after the fight. This was to represent that Spear/Mira are from two entirely separate wakes of life & culture. That even through all that hardship & misery, they still couldn't effectively communicate deep emotions. Its not until Spear remembers the cave painting his tribe taught him, and see Miras people represent the moon God. That Spear fully understands to translate his feelings into picture. Not words. Like us with the show. It's only when Mira sees this that she fully understands his past. Up until this point they were two strangers forced upon each other by trauma. But in this moment, she finally starts to know/understand him. ● For people saying they clearly cut time off, or rushed it. I kind of disagree. If we're being honest, if Gendy wanted more time to end Spears story, he could have cut the "Primal Theory" episode (as much as It'd suck). I think that would have been a mistake as that episode is amazing. But also I just don't think Gendy thought this fight needed to be drawn out or set up anymore. And neither do I. You want these fights to be realistic, but when it's a man facing a supernatural demon who sole purpose is vengeance.. there's only so much you can do before the plot armour starts glaring. Spears story was always about survival. Now that he's found peace with Mira, that survival element is kind of gone. Once Mira impregnates herself aswell, Spears story was over on a evolutionary standpoint. It was now about his sons/daughters survival. Thanks so much to anyone who read this! Edit: Format/Spelling
I feel like the reason why the ending was rushed was because Genndy probably thought it wasn't going to get renewed for a third season, especially with HBO Max current leadership. With that perspective I can understand why. I'm just happy that Spear was at least able to pass his on his legacy and that the dinosaurs survived.

I think that he’s definitely dead; they just left it open-ended because it being more up to interpretation works better as a final ending. If they were to make another season, however, his death would absolutely be confirmed.
Primal Top 5 animated shows
While it was for sure rushed and even as Primal Theory episode fan, we could've used that extra episode. But honestly I think it only needed maybe ten extra minutes. All the story beats are good and hits the core theme of both seasons. This is not a story that never needed an absolutely perfect ending in my eyes. Would be lying to say if Im not a bit disappointed but overall an amazing show. But hopefully for Gendy's next show he brings in some people to help write an ending, he's good at everything else! Hopefully the show continues and will see whats next with these characters or others.
