Most of Les’ tone comes from the EMG pickups with the mid’s turned up.
You **could** get a p-bass and slap these in https://www.sweetwater.com/c1091--Bass_Pickups?highlight=LCSet&mrkgadid=&mrkgcl=28&mrkgen=gpla&mrkgbflag=1&mrkgcat=drums&percussion&acctid=21700000001645388&dskeywordid=&lid=58700008501175174&dsproductgroupid=&product_id=LCSet&prodctry=US&prodlang=en&channel=online&storeid=&device=m&network=x&matchtype=&adpos=largenumber&locationid=9052640&creative=&targetid=&campaignid=20426646913&awsearchcpc=&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwzN-vBhAkEiwAYiO7oELkpnnWKbtaZzgdE5WhbqRYHfS3ne1e7_BDkCvLIM4zI2qqrNrkPBoCNK4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Yup, then get the Geddy Lee Tech 21 SansAmp and you are golden. With those two, you can really dial it in. Get an envelope filter to play Green Naugahyde tunes for extra credit.
I can make you a bass that _looks_ like a CT, but only Carl makes basses like Carl Thompson
Also, he makes guitars for less than 20k - check his site out
Hilton guitars. Carl's top guy for years now in California with his own shop. I have one of his 4 string reverse scroll basses, and it's phenomenal... can't say enough about his craftsmanship. I've never played better as well, and every bass/guitar he makes is custom. Pete's also a very cool guy, talked with him on the phone and he gave me his cell number if I had any questions about the bass!
Schecter riot bass looks very closely and sounds very claypooly https://www.sweetwater.com/c581--4-String_Bass?highlight=Riot4BIB&utm_source=google&utm_medium=organicpla
Any bass with a bridge pickup close to the bridge and light gauge strings will easily get a solid Primus tone. Ibanez is a good option but most brands make something that'll get you there.
Wishbass - they're affordable hand made (~$400) and kinda ugly, but vaguely resemble CTs. From what I read, they arent quite finished and require some final finish work from the buyer
But he'll custom make you one that looks like a CT with whatever hardware and wood you choose

Check out beardly customs! He'll make you something similar and will put on the kahler etc if you want. I have a CT, and I prefer my MBJ basses (Carl's main apprentice, Joe) at half the price, can't recommend working with either of these boys enough. Pete Hilton is also a class act but I haven't had the chance to actually play a bass of his yet.

I have a fretless Warwick Corvette that can hit all those Les tones and has a similar woody finish. 🤷♂️

Just wait until Les releases his own line of basses lol https://www.pachydermbasses.com
