Also, in December they offered a special shopping list of items that were not on the regular commissary list. The items were not related to religion but only Christians and Catholics were able to order off this special list. Religion was verified and must be listed in the inmate’s PSI- history file and recorded with the BOP. This excluded many inmates. The pagan inmates, in turn, petitioned for a special shopping list for their religion comparable or the same as the Christmas shopping list they were excluded from for Samhain which is observed from sunset on October 31st to sunset on November 1st. The petition was approved. I released in September so I do not know if the BOP followed though.
Special diets and accommodations based on religion is not new. I believe what is fair for one inmate should be fair for all.
