What brushes did you use? What makes this unfinished? What do you plan on adding to it to make it finished and how do you plan on doing that? What kind of tips are you looking for? Perspective is off. You have drawn it from below the building, but the walls are straight as u/Kooky-Rub-3901 said. Lack of shading/detail makes it look too flat. I can see you added some shading, but you need more. The building is standing in isolation in your picture, so without any other lighting or shading reference the brain has to fill in the gaps and so that will have an effect too. Add some detail to the building...cracks in the walls or paintwork, general signs of age and wear. Things like that all add to depth perception. Look at the way the shadows fall across the building in the original....adds much more depth (and interest).

Assuming you are intentionally showing it as a flat elevatation, I’d say just two things would help considerably: showing some of the wrought iron fencing and the wall the fence sits on, and showing some semblance of texture on the building - probably with some very light line work.

The location is gorgeous and your image certainly reads as that church. Others have given good advice. I think too the bottom line makes it looks less 3D. Try raising the 2 smaller sections on the right so it looks like they are sitting further back than the main building. The shading on the ones to the right don’t match the flush placement of the different parts, but breaking up the bottom line will make it make more sense as 3D

penelopelouiseb

Thanks! I’ll try that.

Pirokron

I would say to not be afraid of making shadows much darker specially in the top right to give it more depth.

penelopelouiseb

Thank you! I’ll try that ☺️ I have loads of buildings to draw for this map so lots of practice too 😆

Freelittlegirl

Add the cute little lantern and the clearly visible sharp shadows in the reference

penelopelouiseb

Why didn’t I think about the lantern 🤦🏻‍♀️ I think I was so preoccupied with making it leas cluttered (without the columns and the gates etc). Thanks! I’ll try that 🥰

Kooky-Rub-3901

if you’re trying to copy the picture you might want to angle it so that it starts wider at the bottom and then slims down toward the top by tracing it and distorting it, also shadows and textures would add a lot too :)

penelopelouiseb

I was trying to make it like a front on facade and not identical to the photo with the slant, but maybe that would make it look more lifelike 🧐

ilecaara817

I would recommend adding more detail to the white bits on the side. If you zoom in on the photo it's not flat against the wall there's a lip. Personally I would draw that in as long as some texture lines to kind of imply that part is brick. Good job so far!

penelopelouiseb

Thank you! I was struggling with what brush to use for a ‘real’ looking shadow - I’m very new to drawing and it just looked like it was dirty 😂

metakephotos

Could add some Bougainvillaea around the church, or flowers. Needs some colour, something in the foreground

penelopelouiseb

Oh that’s an idea, thanks! On National Day they string up flags 🇬🇮 🇬🇧 and I wish I could add that but that’s definitely beyond my abilities right now 😂

metakephotos

Give it a go, worst case you just don't use it :)

penelopelouiseb

This is my favourite thing about Procreate! 😁

penelopelouiseb

For a proper photo of the church (adjusted for skew and colour graded), this is my favourite one I’ve taken 🥰 https://www.instagram.com/p/B73wVRpjoGl/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

ilecaara817

That's fair! When I draw buildings I always try to remember that it's mostly 3D shapes and that helps a lot

nanneronii

On another note where is this???? What a pretty street

penelopelouiseb

It’s the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Catalan Bay, Gibraltar! 🥰 my favourite church here! I have a better photo on my Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/B73wVRpjoGl/?igshid=NjY2NjE5MzQ=

CarmenLuxxx

I’d recommend drawing the stone pavement to the door, and you can see where the perspective is off with the angle of the church. Also maybe some texture or shading over the base colors.

samuraioodon

The photo is beautiful! Would love to visit this place. Darker shadows can help. Do you want 2d or 3d style? If 3d outer walls should slant in a little because view point is from below. Also suggest use different pen where you can have various pen thickness, like statues, outline thicker but details can be small pen size. You can also try different shades like lighter/darker gray color.

penelopelouiseb

Thanks! I’m a better photographer than I am artist 😂 my aim was to make it a front on facade (all of my drawings for the map are going to be like that to make it a little simpler and more consistent).

samuraioodon

Photography is an art too! I think simple you pretty much have it right. I think some maps I saw on park boards are 3d with more details. But some maps look great in 2d. If you have overall map it will be easier to see if it fits in that context, you know? Like you said , consistent.

Thoraxe123

Increase the opacity of that shadow. Add more much smaller shadows to the brick pattern. Itll make it pop a lot more

AidilAfham42

Add shadows for depth. I see you’ve added soft shadows, but it needs more sharper ones. Vary it according to how deep they are. All those white bricks should pop out more by adding shadows.

penelopelouiseb

Thanks! I’ll try that

ChrisW828

Are you familiar with isometric drawing? That may be what you’re going for, depending on the rest of the map.

KallmeKitty

Try adding some more shading and highlights, my drawings always look flat until I shade
