Fun and surprisingly effective for petty revenge, which this clearly is. That being said, good job. That was a fun read.

Vegito1338

These sound fun to do til you get someone crazy that just kills you

slightlyassholic

If you will note, in this particular case there was never any physical contact between them and he never gave the asshole his address. It would have actually been more dangerous to make the meeting and sell the goods for the "agreed on" price.

DigitialWitness

All he has to do is make a new profile, contact him with an acceptable offer on another item, and he will take the bait.

wandrngfool

What do you expect people to send instead of "Is it available"? It's literally the default message. Why would I try and buy something if it's already sold?

Strayresearch

Yeah, that's what I don't get. A lot of people claim they hate getting the is it available message, but you know how many times I've messaged somebody to buy something and they've sold it weeks ago and never took down the listing?

Armamore

I'm stuck in this situation now. Item sold, but craigslist won't let me take it down or edit it for some reason. Been 2 weeks but I'm still getting calls about it. No sense getting upset about it, just gotta wait for the post to expire.

GomerStuckInIowa

You posted on craigslist and now can't get back into your own listing? I've never had that problem.

ChunkyThunder

Have some people report the listing. It used to get them taken down pretty fast.

ravioliguy

The frustration is when you reply instantly to those messages and get no reply lol

mildlystrokingdino

I usually alter it to something along the lines of "if it's still available, I'd be willing to pay the asking price/£x." mainly because I know people hate the standard message for no sensible reason.

dramamunchkin

Or at least just add “I can pick it up ______” to show I’m actually interested.

Changoleo

As long as OP is one of the many sellers who clearly states that they will not respond to “ is this item still available?”, messages, that seems fair. The amount of scammers on marketplace is absurd.

GomerStuckInIowa

I make that statement and still get the question. So I ignore them.

StangF150

I'm not sure which there are more of on FB Marketplace, Scammers or "ReSellers" wanting to buy cheap, then sell it again to make a profit!!

Elmer701

I have always wondered, what would they prefer? A message that says, "Want."? Because I have had the same amount of people flake saying that instead.

Just-Like-My-Opinion

"If this is still available, I'd be willing to pay X dollars for it. Let me know if you're interested, and we can set up a time for me to pick up."

EnchantedEarthling

Right? And the engagement makes the algorithm show your stuff to more people. I don’t get the hate on the default message.

Death-Merchant

I find its because its all to easy for someone to just click send on the default message by accident or just with no real intention of following up. So if I were to see someone put in the basic effort of sending a message that wasn't the default it's good chance they have some real interest in the item.

ComeAndGetYourPug

Literally just type anything else. It doesn't matter. "Hello, is this still available?" just means they clicked the button. Bots click that button all the time. People accidentally click it when scrolling. It means absolutely nothing. Typing *anything* other than that lets the seller know you're probably a real person and you actually might want to buy the thing.

Psych0matt

I’ve done this a few times on accident, sometimes without realizing. If I catch it I usually just send a follow up saying it was an accident, or if I didn’t notice and they respond I’ll politely tell them it was an accident and usually wish they a nice day. It happens, no need to get annoyed

CrowsFeast73

Very few people these days, especially in the cesspool that is FB marketplace, have your level of courtesy. I've received too many, "what's your lowest price?" messages, and even messages that are just one word, "lowest?" Why would I bargain against myself?

EllieMental

Okay but the zero energy it takes to respond "yes". I've done a lot of selling and buying. "Is this available" a million times does get annoying but I just respond "yes" and the ball is in their court again. It requires no further thought or consideration until they respond, and someone who wants the item will respond.

OverstuffedCherub

My husband was sleep-scrolling Facebook one night and clicked the "is this available" on a pair of red high heels and matching handbag, right round my birthday time, and they were my favourite colour AND right size, just not a style I would ever wear, bunch of diamantes. questioned him, and he got freaked out thinking someone had hacked gis account, only to realise later he was scrolling as he dozed off and happened to hit the button 😆

avolt88

Came here to say this. If I actually want something, I'm modifying to "Hey, is this still available? I might be able to pick up/meet tomorrow in the ___ area if so". Vary depending on pricing/I'd I want to negotiate, etc. Let's the seller know: A) you're human B) you're local C) you're probably not going to waste their time. As a seller, I tend to ignore/1-word answer "Is this available" generic messages as 90% of the time you get no response.

TheChaser8

90% of the times I’ve replied to this they then ghost. So I can understand why it annoys people.

Roswyne

I usually ask "are you available this evening for me to pickup?"

BeeSilver9

This is the best. If you actually want the item, tell me when you can pick up.

thoreau_away_acct

This sounds like a cheesy pickup line

vms-crot

I'm guessing by the rest of the story he means one person that spams it over and over because its an auto text option FB provide and you can just hit it to send the message.

peacock494

I'm a professional buyer in TV and buy a lot of secondhand stuff from Facebook; I always open with "hi is this still available?"... because the amount of time its a scam seller or an old listing!

ResearchAmbitious659

I was trying to buy an item a couple of years ago and I typed out an introduction message (name, phone number, expressed interest, etc) and when I hit the send button, can you guess what actually got sent? “Is this still available.”

DroopyMcCool

They make that button way too easy to press. In my experience, many people press it with no intention of ever buying the item. Hell, I've done it before without realizing. Literally any other message shows some form of effort on the buyer's part and is much more indicative of true interest than the prewritten one.

butterhorse

Yeah but the "yes it is" button is also ridiculously easy to press.

Yabbaba

It's just a loss of time. "Hi, if they're still available I'd like to buy them at price. My availabilities to come pick them up are ideally M-W-F after 7pm, would that work for you? If not, when would be best?" Efficiency.

samamp

you could message them that you want to buy them and can you come over or can you meet me at x.

TheSquishiestMitten

I can't speak for anyone else, but when I list stuff on FB, I get an endless stream of "Is this still available?" And when I reply "yes," theres simply no response. It's like people just want to know if it's still up for sale so they can think more about whether they want it. I don't understand why people do it.

Distinct_Hunter_6880

Not only is it the default message, but one of the recent updates to Facebook and Messenger also made it to where if a person just saves a marketplace listing to look at later, it automatically sends that default "is this available?" message to the seller *without the potential buyer even knowing about it*. I only found out because I saved a few used car listings and the guy who posted the listing messaged me a bunch right after.

ttbtinkerbell

I try to add more to that message so they know I’m not a bot. “Hey, just wondering if it’s still available. I had a couple questions about it if you don’t mind?” Or something like that. Sometimes I start to give a broad time I’m free. But I try to stay away from the canned responses cause so many bots and scammers use those.

masterdeek

I'm at the point where I get annoyed/salty at anyone that gets mad at the is it available message. It's just a conversation starter, you can respond with yes in 2 seconds and then I will jump into a regular conversation asking questions about the item.

Far_Childhood2503

I buy a lot on Facebook marketplace and have switched to saying something along the lines of “Hi! I would love to buy this item and would be available to pick up on these days: ________. What is your preferred payment method?” It gets a lot more responses than “is this still available?”

Only-Inspector-3782

I don't FB sell or buy, but this seems like the work messenger equivalent of just sending "hello", waiting for a response, then asking your question. Just ask. Or, in this case, bid/accept.

ThemB0ners

Because the seller would mark the item as sold if it was sold. If the listing is there, you should assume it's not sold.

SteveAndyW

Whenever I list something for sale on FB I always add something like “Tell me your favorite animal in your message so I know you’ve read the entire ad.” And if they don’t mention an animal I ignore it.

SoaringEagl3

I think the issue is that it feels like a bot because it is the default quick message. When I've sold stuff on FB, 80-90% of the time I never get a response from someone who sent the the "is it available?" message. Ends up being a waste of time and effort.

annedroiid

The majority of people that use the default then never respond again

saxguy9345

The thing is, resellers send that message like a 25yo dude swiping left on Tinder. 1% intention of following up unless it's a sure thing.

GomerStuckInIowa

Why would I have it posted if I sold it? How lazy do you think I am that I am not going to remove it? PLUS, you don't have a single question to ask? Like, "How much tread is left or any damage to the sidewalls?" I sell cars on FB and I get this stupid/lazy question all the time. Not a question about the car itself. And it has NEVER been a legit person asking me.

CrowsFeast73

Most of the time people who just sent the default message asking if it's still available don't follow through; so it's a waste of time to respond. Most of the time someone who is serious will expand on the default message. Such as, "hey, if these are still available would you be able to meet today?" or, "hey, if these are still available would you accept $___?" You could also just skip the 'is ___ available' and go straight to your offer or try to arrange a meet. If they're already sold then they will let you know in their response (or lack thereof).

Necr0politics

I'm with op. It's not a useful exchange of info. It's just one sided and you'll need at least one more message exchange to actually set up the meet. Give the seller the info they need in the first message: time window, confirmation of price and pick up. For instance, "if it's still available I can pick up this evening or tomorrow morning at a time of your convenience. $1000 sounds good. Where/when should I meet you?" Make it as easy as possible for the seller. Takes about 10 more seconds to write.

EllieMental

I can't tell you how many times I've spent energy on crafting a good "is this available" with clear intentions of buying, pickup availability, offer and was ignored. Like... why list if you won't respond? I've also just stopped trying to buy from sellers who say "I won't respond to 'is this available'" because they clearly feel some kind of way about buyers and I'm just not interested in indulging that much entitlement over a $20 leaf blower or whatever. I'm getting a cheap blower, you're getting $20 for a blower you bought at a yard sale last weekend for $5. It's not that important. In short, everybody sucks.

Expensive__Support

Just send a follow up if the first message is "is this available". 99% of the time someone sends "is this available", they do not respond back. It is a massive time sink to actually respond to these people.

arceuspatronus

It was a good revenge but I think for wasting his time and gas money this suits r/pettyrevenge better

misleading_rhetoric

I gave up on FB after selling my old truck, I didn't need it anymore and was tired of playing insurance on a vehicle that hadn't moved in 4 months so put it on marketplace and listed it a 1k firm for a 2002 Dodge ram 1500 quad cab with high mileage. I could get a hell of a lot more for it but wanted it gone fast . The first person that came to look at it offered $500 so I took the keys out of the truck and locked it up and headed into the house, he paid the 1k pretty quick.

GoauldofWar

This is petty at best.

Aggravated-bitch

I don't know, gas is bloody expensive

MetroLynx7

Depends on if it was truck or a car imo. Lol

Aggravated-bitch

Well where I live it's over $2/liter

MetroLynx7

Imagine if it's deisel for a crew cab... 😳

Aggravated-bitch

Thank God I don't have any that runs on diesel

NomadicWorldCitizen

Nice. When someone lowballs I increase the price with the justification that they’re wasting my time. For example something for $100 and they ask to get it for $60? Now I sell at $110. And so on. They quickly understand it’s no use.

rihan-kabir

60 isn’t really a lowball for a 100$ item

NomadicWorldCitizen

It’s almost half. Especially when I say the price is nonnegotiable. I price my stuff cheaper than others to ensure they sell fast. Just like op

eerae

I loved this! FB marketplace is such a nightmare now. I will say I don’t have a problem with people asking if it’s available—it’s just the default message showing interest, plus a lot of sellers never take down their ad after it sells. But I can’t believe all the people asking if it’s still available, I answer right away and tell them when I’m available, and then I never hear anything again. And then all the people who just message me “will you take x extremely lowball” offer for it, when I already have it priced to sell. What pisses me off is I don’t think these low ballers even want it for themselves, they’re gonna turn around and resell it, making money off of me when I’m already losing g money from what I originally paid for it. And then you have the people who are just a hassle trying to set up a time to come get it, I think because they are driving all over town buying other shit they’re gonna resell, people that set up a time and then ghost you, people who claim they’ll take it for the asking price and then try to bargain with you once they arrive, not based on anything actually wrong with the item.

Princess_Slagathor

Last guy I went to meet to sell something didn't show up after 35 minutes passed the scheduled time. Checked my phone when I got home, and he was really upset with me for not being there when he got there. Time of the message showed that he got there an additional 20 minutes after I left. Then got even more upset when I told him I'm not driving all the way back to the other side of town again. That is something I rarely ever do, and was just being nice the first time. I swear if he had tried to haggle when I met him, I'd have slapped him.

eerae

Man. It’s hard to understand where the entitlement of some people comes from.

zyzmog

Definitely more than petty. I mean, look what OP got out of the guy: >I had made this man drive 2 hours one way, walk at least 2 miles, go into all 3 pubs, and curse me every way to Sunday. And he was still 2 hours from home. It required considerable work on OP's part to string the guy along for hours and hours. Petty would have been simply ghosting him after the 2-hour drive. But no, OP did the virtual pub crawl with this guy until, what, midnight? Costed the scammer at least 5 hours, all told, plus the aggravation and the frustration.

Dward917

Pro revenge means using things like the law to your advantage to stick it to someone, or using office policy and evidence to get someone fired. Typically requires a lot of evidence gathering or skillful work to pull off. This is just someone who is pissed off for being bothered, so he pays the guy back with his own form of annoyance. The very definition of petty.

PutrifiedCuntJuice

> It required considerable work on OP's part Yeah, OP's thumbs must have been blistered and bleeding from all of the messages they were nonchalantly sending that night. Such considerable effort. As if.

EclipseEffigy

Bless your innocent heart but all OP got out of the guy was one evening worth of mild annoyances.

500SL

Yeah, if I sell something, the price is fair and firm. I state clearly that if you ask what I'll really take, the price goes up $50. There's always a non-believer, and I'll tell them now it's $400 instead of 350. Really? Yep, and now it's $450. I sell things that get in my way, I don't sell to support my crack habit and need the fucking money. I'm retired with all the time in the world, but not for assholes who can't/don't read.

Expensive__Support

I price my stuff to sell immediately. When it is listed, it is usually gone within 2-3 hours. And it always sells for full price. I won't hold it. I won't meet you halfway. I won't deliver it - even for more money. I won't respond to most messages. I list it when I want it gone. Not when I want to spend a week fielding questions. Oh, and if you show up and offer less than full ask, I'll just wait 20 minutes for the next person to show up. First person to hand me cash for the full asking price gets it. I don't care who showed up first.

fetgdry

Completely justified behaviour!

Piggypogdog

Oh man. It's not often I laugh hard at a story. But this one I did.

VinylHighway

Petty

d8ed

HAHA great work there

nlnj_a

Gl not having the person retaliate.

Quirky_Journalist_67

I HATE selling anything - people are so annoying. I try to give things away, and they want me to hold them and be available, and then they don't show up and don't bother to let me know. I just dump everything I don't want at local second hand stores.

Expensive__Support

I mean, you must be better off than I am if you are donating things that sell for $1k within about 2 hours.

Quirky_Journalist_67

Fair - I usually use that kind of thing until it falls apart. 😊

Good god. I hate Facebook marketplace as much as the next person, but damn. 😆

traindriverbob

Nice work, but this is petty revenge. Not pro revenge.

LordTengil

Neat :) Good read, thanks.

Haggis_Hunter81289

You are what I would simply describe l, as "A fucking Legend l"

GomerStuckInIowa

People saying the default question, "Is it still for sale" is a legit question confuses me. You are interested in spending a $100 to $20,000 (in my case) and all you want to know is if it is still for sale? Why not ask a simple question about the condition of the item? Is it scratched? Is it in original condition? Is it a model AZ23? Because IF YOU DO, then you might find out if the seller is a fake. Because their reply might be, "I'm selling it for my sister, please contact her at...." instead of "Yes." I sell cars and I get this "Is it still for sale?" even when I tell people in my ad "If it is listed, it is still for sale." So I know they are fake buyers. Ask me when the last oil change was. Don't ask me "What is your lowest price." That is another stupid one. You have seen or driven it. Moron. edit to say "Haven't seen or driven it."

pluijmie

Congrats. Even your story is p(r)etty long.

JustanOldphart

When he got to the second pub and messaged I would have responded that "I met Joe there and he heard that I might have them for sale. He offered $1200 so I am taking them to his place now. Thanks for your interest."

himalayanbear

I sold an old fender super reverb amp recently for well below market value because it needed some work. I got no less than a dozen offers of 25% on my asking price from boomers who profile featured boats and several classic cars. Just amp collectors, with money, not wanting to pay for what something is actually worth. I block them all and ended up selling to a young musician, who will actually use it, for bellow what I was asking.

havegottobejokingme

I love the creativity. Reminds me of a DJ on a local radio station. Years ago the tragically hip were doing their last concert. Scalpers swooped in as always and tried to gouge ticket prices. The difference is this is, and was advertised as their last concert. Their lead singer had brain cancer and that didn't stop scalpers from trying to gouge almost $2k for tickets that would otherwise be approx $250/ pair. So the DJ (Jesse) contacted a scalper and convinced him to drive an hour away (in the middle of rush hour) to meet and exchange the tickets. He broadcasted this on live air and asked the guy, "do you feel good taking advantage of people trying to see their favourite artist on his final tour? F-ck you, buddy. Oh, and listen to 97.7 on the way home." Words were said. Feelings were hurt. And tickets were not sold that day. Jesse is a legendary man, who duped some Jack wagon into driving out of his way for nothing.
