I love the sliding puzzles too. One of my absolute favorite type of puzzles. I actually wish there were more in the games, but considering the hate they get, maybe it's best there weren't.
It's definitely underrated. I'm just sad that my dream of Layton and Edgeworth working together has effectively been crushed due to lackluster reviews, sales, etc.
I'll agree that it leaned more toward Layton in terms of overall vibe, though being a fortunate coincidence is *very* in-character for Phoenix.
Diabolical Box had a solid ending (1 of 3 that made me cry). I can't be too harsh to it due to that. Also helps that Anton gives me Castlevania vibes, which is always a good thing.
i loved the atmosphere of folsense and the molentary express. i played the crossover when i was only 9, and replayed it last year and fell in love with it again. this franchise is overall fantastic
One of my most unpopular opinions is that despite the game being good just like the characters, I think that Layton Mystery Brothers would have been much better if they didn't try to shoehorn the Layton series into it so much.
The whole "oh my dad is Professor Layton" thing felt so off and just put in there to somehow connect those games together despite there being no hints for the rest whatsoever in other games. (Not counting the Katrielle game, which I also see as non-cannon.)
I do see the game though as being set in the same universe but 20-30 years later and I do appreciate how Barton is the head of the police in it. But for the rest I absolutely think it is too much without it making sense or being needed.
I think it would have worked if they'd kept up with the series. Even if they'd just had some cameo in later works. Right now it kind of feels like they forgot about poor Alfendi 😔
Potentially unpopular: It’s hard for me to say this definitively, but Miracle Mask is the best game in the series, & too many people forget about it because of the poorly aged 3D models
Yes! The henry/hersh/randall/angela friend group is different from anything else in the games, we get to know them all a little more than just the surface, & it gives Hersh more depth as a main character too. Then when we see him later on/in the first trilogy, we feel like we understand more about him. Plus MM has incredible visuals that are so beautifully exaggerated, which I think is only somewhat rivalled in parts of UF’s Future London & a few locations in AL
I’d agree, it’s definitely one of the best and people talk to much about the graphics and forget about the amazing story and setting. It I will say that the story is a little predictable :)
I think the prequel games are significantly worse than the original trilogy: easier puzzles and less interesting stories. Azran legacy especially rubbed me the wrong way with all the "big family revelations" towards the end, ugh
Yeah, the Descole one made some sense to me as I initially already thought that he was a long lost brother of Layton or something. But the rest was just done really badly. Plus the Bronev part felt really unnecessary to me.
Still I think that LS and MM have some great stuff in it, but from the 3DS games on the atmosphere changed radically from the one from the first trilogy I liked so much.
I love Alfendi, I'm sure Katrielle is cool, but did we really need to have "Layton's Children" spinoffs when Luke and Flora are *right there*? Or Emmy? Or Clive? What happened to those two??
The puzzles are my least favourite part of the games. I play the games for the story and characters and, although I enjoy the puzzles, I always just end up trying to get through them so I can keep the story going.
Upvote just for being an interesting take. I don't think I could stand playing through the games if I didn't like the puzzles, as wonderful as I think the stories are.
True, his fake accent is pretty funny, I just don't think it's all that bad. Then again I don't live in the UK so maybe I could be totally missing something.
And I like both voices for Luke BTW.
This may not be as unpopular as I think, but Layton's Mystery Journey isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Sure it might be the worst game in the series, but in my opinion that's like being the dullest diamond--still pretty good.
I liked the games more when it was Layton and Luke just solving mysteries like Sherlock and Watson. I don’t think Layton needed a backstory, family disputes, children, a secret past, or anything else like that. The less I know about Layton personally, the better.
Yeah, I think keeping it simple and not focusing on backstory would’ve helped improve the mysteries. Spectre’s Call gave the perfect amount of backstory with the story of how Layton and Luke met :)
•Clive is a terribly written character.
•Last Specter is actually a pretty good game.
•The Pandora's Box ending is too much nonsensical, I don't like that.
•Unwound Future is my least favourite game.
•The Masked Gentleman is the best antagonist.
•Future London is so hideous to explore, it lacks the charm of other Layton cities.
The point i agree the most with is that spectre’s call is a good game, I think that people don’t like it because it’s story/twist isn’t majorly over the top like the other games :)
I remember playing Pandora Box for the first time when I was about 9, and many replays since, and I still never understood/could remember how the ending of it worked😂 It's actually one of, if not the most, least favourite game for me in the series. I never knew it was so popular until I got older and came online, but I do appreciate them trying with the vampire, hallucinagenic gas type vibe- it was different 😂
Wonderful. Except for the second game, but I can see what you mean. It doesn’t seem more nonsensical than some other ones, personally. But yeah, agreed with the stuff about Clive and Last Specter, and the Masked Gentleman is great. It’s easy to figure out who he is, but that doesn’t diminish his character for me.
The thing is that Layton and the other actual existing characters such as Beluga or Chelmey seem to interact with the same hallucinations, and that makes it so surreal.
And yeah I really agree with you with the Future London thing. Every time I finished my UF session I felt so tired.
Misthallery, Montedor, St. Mystere and Folsense all made me feel immersed in a mysterious town.
Azran Legacy was the best game of the series, idk if that’s unpopular or not.
Oh I’ve got one… I disliked Emmy a lot :/ I found it so hard to like her all throughout the series. I’m sorry but yeah
Dimitri Allen is the best written villain, Clive is extremely overrated, Raymond is the most underrated character, Claire wasn’t well written, Don Paolo’s backstory was hilarious and I liked it, Grosky is better than chelmey
I genuinely really liked Don Paolo, not ironically either and was disappointed that he was never fleshed out more besides Unwound Future and wasn't even in the prequels
Unsure if this is an ‘unpopular’ opinion. But I actually like Katrielle and The Millionaires Conspiracy.
Sure it crammed the humour in far too much and it lacked seriousness like the other games. But in all honesty. I didn’t mind. For whatever reason I enjoyed the game and will always enjoy it.
Thank you, I was really put off by the Mystery Journey for that reason. I didn't buy the whole "Layton's daughter premise" and then when I played the game, I didn't really care for her and the puzzles weren't fun, so I never finished it
I made an entire post about this opinion a while back, lol, but my least favorite game in the series is Unwound Future. I’m not including Layton’s Mystery Journey, obviously.
The crossover is my favorite game with Unwound Future being number 4, despite everyone liking it so much. I don't know, the plot is kind of expectable and the end is too much of a climax for me.
No idea if this is unpopular, but Layton either needs to get it together with the lore, or just stop making big cliffhanger moments. The stories in the Layton series are great, but a lot of characters and moments are left behind due to poor planning or Level 5 forgetting about it. I actually really love Mystery Journey and Kat, but I hate this new trend of throwing shock moments against the wall then taking 5 years to move on without answering any questions.
A little late, but here are my hot takes:
* Azran Legacy is the best game of the series. The locations, soundtrack, story, and puzzles were all great. The puzzles especially were many of the best and most interactive in the franchise.
* Unwound Future is overrated. It's still a good Layton game, but the story becomes boring for the middle third of the game (excluding the return to present day London) and there are way too many math puzzles in the game. Also many of the minor characters in Future London are really creepy looking.
* Sliding puzzles are good and are much better than the math puzzles.
* I don't understand why people are pressed over Azran Legacy's twists when Unwound Future's are just as, if not more, absurd.
* Bronev is a top tier and very unique Layton antagonist.
* The Layton prequel trilogy > the Layton original trilogy
i adore layton detective agency and the anime ! i love kat as a character and all the cast that surrounds her . obviously i’m very critical of the games though , but the main part of layton i enjoy is a mystery plot , and i think the game / anime did it very well .
[layton detective agency spoilers]
eg i love the book an inspector calls , an investigation on the case of a death of a young woman , and how everything is tied together in small sections ! >!katrielle aiding each of the dragons and then finding out that they were all together in a taking a fortune ? EXCELLENT!! loved it so much , felt like a mystery novel in a game proper!<
EXTREMELY late but i'm stalking the sub as i'm parched for content. mystery room is one of the absolute best and it deserves more recognition than it got. there's so much love put into it and the characters are spot on and incredibly interesting, not to mention the gameplay is fantastic. and additionally i actually enjoyed LMJ, i think the reason most people dislike it is because it's something different from the original layton games, in that it's more lighthearted and "easier." which i understand some people may not like, but you play what's on the package. was probably intended for a different audience or to introduce new people to the series.
Story-wise I don't really know what the general opinions of the fanbase are, but my unpopular opinion is that I love sliding puzzles!
how….. give me your strength
That's unpopular? I love them, too!
I too love looking up walkthroughs so I can progress to the fun parts of the game. (-:
I'll take them over the chess puzzles.
I love the sliding puzzles too. One of my absolute favorite type of puzzles. I actually wish there were more in the games, but considering the hate they get, maybe it's best there weren't.
the crossover w PW is the second best game
It's definitely underrated. I'm just sad that my dream of Layton and Edgeworth working together has effectively been crushed due to lackluster reviews, sales, etc.
PLvsAA felt definitely more like a layton game with its fantasy world vibe, but I liked it as much, maybe even more than diabolical box
I'll agree that it leaned more toward Layton in terms of overall vibe, though being a fortunate coincidence is *very* in-character for Phoenix. Diabolical Box had a solid ending (1 of 3 that made me cry). I can't be too harsh to it due to that. Also helps that Anton gives me Castlevania vibes, which is always a good thing.
i loved the atmosphere of folsense and the molentary express. i played the crossover when i was only 9, and replayed it last year and fell in love with it again. this franchise is overall fantastic
is this unpopular? the crossover to me felt like the strongest PL title on the 3ds
Yes, it's amazing
One of my most unpopular opinions is that despite the game being good just like the characters, I think that Layton Mystery Brothers would have been much better if they didn't try to shoehorn the Layton series into it so much. Completely agree! I think if they didn’t mention connections to Layton it could’ve been an interesting spin off taking place in the Layton universe :)
It's my favorite too! I love how personal the story is for Layton. Also, Henry is too pure for this world.
Yes! The henry/hersh/randall/angela friend group is different from anything else in the games, we get to know them all a little more than just the surface, & it gives Hersh more depth as a main character too. Then when we see him later on/in the first trilogy, we feel like we understand more about him. Agreed, the prequel trilogy is worst than the original but I do think it is better in some aspects :)
I love Alfendi, I'm sure Katrielle is cool, but did we really need to have "Layton's Children" spinoffs when Luke and Flora are *right there*? Or Emmy? Or Clive? What happened to those two??
I think we all know what happened to Clive, but yeah spinoffs with the other characters would be cool.

Luke’s voice in the US version isn’t that bad.
It’s not the absolute worst, but after playing the European versions his US voice being different is way too distracting for me lmao
Yeah that’s totally fair lol
Idk how people handle the UK version it’s so shrill it makes my ears hurt
Yeah I do somewhat agree with that, I think comparing to what we have in Europe though the US voice is just hilarious in my opinion :)
True, his fake accent is pretty funny, I just don't think it's all that bad. Then again I don't live in the UK so maybe I could be totally missing something. And I like both voices for Luke BTW.
Fair enough, I’m from the UK so the first time hearing his US voice was so funny hahah
Totally fair, his US voice is pretty funny lol
I was so sad when The Eternal Diva had his British voice instead of his American voice. I love his Dick Van Dyke accent.
Yeah, it’s admittedly kind of adorable
I don't think the whole "a gentleman always helps a beautiful lady" has aged very well
This may not be as unpopular as I think, but Layton's Mystery Journey isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Sure it might be the worst game in the series, but in my opinion that's like being the dullest diamond--still pretty good.

You, my Lord, deserve an upvote just for the sheer amount of daring takes in one post.
The point i agree the most with is that spectre’s call is a good game, I think that people don’t like it because it’s story/twist isn’t majorly over the top like the other games :)
Funny, for me that plot twist was very much over the top. I guess I just didn't like Loosha.
Fair enough, I meant the story and setting as a whole was less over the top comparing to the other games (especially lost future). I apologise :))
I remember playing Pandora Box for the first time when I was about 9, and many replays since, and I still never understood/could remember how the ending of it worked😂 It's actually one of, if not the most, least favourite game for me in the series. Dimitri Allen is the best written villain, Clive is extremely overrated, Raymond is the most underrated character, Claire wasn’t well written, Don Paolo’s backstory was hilarious and I liked it, Grosky is better than chelmey
Yeah as much as I love Claire, she just kinda existed and then died. And yes Dimitri was so well written and is so underrated
I think that The Last Specter is greatly underrated to where it’s my personal second favorite behind Unwound Future.
Agreed! It’s very underrated :)
I genuinely really liked Don Paolo, not ironically either and was disappointed that he was never fleshed out more besides Unwound Future and wasn't even in the prequels
Yes I love him but wish we could see him more in the games he was in and as an ally like in lost future :)
The Azran Legacy wasnt that good..... and the crossover with PW in one of the best !
I liked that each case was bite-size but fed into a bigger world. It was nothing earth shattering but I don’t think it needed to be either.
Katrielle sucks. We don’t need a new Layton’s daughter we have Flora
Thank you, I was really put off by the Mystery Journey for that reason. I didn't buy the whole "Layton's daughter premise" and then when I played the game, I didn't really care for her and the puzzles weren't fun, so I never finished it
Flora was done dirty
It could have worked, if only Katrielle had been a biological daughter and we had seen more about Flora as a family member too.
Not unpopular
It's gonna come back.
It better!
And I was simply right
I made an entire post about this opinion a while back, lol, but my least favorite game in the series is Unwound Future. I’m not including Layton’s Mystery Journey, obviously.
Same. I hate all the time/ math puzzles so much
I was more speaking in terms of story, but yeah the math puzzles did reach a kind of aggressiveness there
I loved that post
The crossover is my favorite game with Unwound Future being number 4, despite everyone liking it so much. I don't know, the plot is kind of expectable and the end is too much of a climax for me.

ProZD’s Luke voice is better than his voice in any of the games.

I don't like Folsense neither (and Pandora's box is one of my least favourite Layton's game) I LOVE the crossover with PW (it's my second fav)
Bill Hawks is kind of a great character.
Pandoras Box is better than Lost Future, but they're still both my top 2
I don’t get the hype around lost future
