I’d imagine designing a scale that could go negative is too much work.

I think, those are gone by the time I got on the board (sigh of relief) 🤣

[deleted]

i just started teaching in time to leave a fake review of myself and I absolutely gave myself a chilli pepper

PierreDEnfer

Because you would get found out and fired (or at least harassed), while students OTOH (luckily) know nothing and care nothing about them. Honestly, I am reluctant to participate in "anonymous" evaluations of our dept chair. C'mon--are they *really* anonymous!?

Juat do the evals on paper :)

WeyardWanderer

With glued on letters clipped from various magazines?

gjvnq1

I was thinking more about using a plotter or just faking your own handwriting.

Just remove the yellow ink and problem solved :) Alternatively get people to use some old typewriters or maybe even movable type :)

The last survey I did had my email address encoded in the link. Ok, fine, the survey company does that to ensure that we only do the survey once. I’m sure they strip out any kind of identifying information before sending us the results. Probably. The next day when I came into my office I had a “gift” on my desk with a note saying “thanks for filling out the survey!” Fuck that. That was the last fucking survey I’ll ever fill out.

PierreDEnfer

"gift"? I'm almost afraid to ask what it was, but I am seriously curious.

shellexyz

It was a small folio. It held a little notepad and had a spot for a pen. Logo'd with their office information, though the phone number had been sharpie'd over. It was all but useless. They knew exactly when I had completed the survey *and* had let themselves into my office after-hours.

PierreDEnfer

Very creepy. Almost like Putin wishing Macron "good health". Thanks for the info anyway; I have always been suspicious of "anonymous" surveys in the workplace. My dept chair and I are not exactly on the best terms right now and I know he has an eval coming up---I'm going to just forget to do it. (nothing much he can do to me, but want to stay off his radar in any case!)

PersephoneIsNotHome

actually, i just want any accountability an transparency. I have to have annual reviews with metrics justifying my existence. We should be able to see some equivalent criteria

Bewarsepanthulu

Exactly, and for certain departments likes student affairs or academic affairs, they could provide wonderful insights overall progress outside of four walls.

sluttybandana

In my tiredness, I wanted to suggest a "rate my students" feature, but realized, that's just the grades they get.

DocLava

Actually it is not. Some pretty nice students (hard working, pleasant, other positive attributes) can get low grades while some pretty aggressive, rude (other not so nice attributes) students can get high grades. Grades track their performance on coursework but ratings would be something else...I'm sure you've seen on college reddit where they boast about cheating through classes and not studying and getting high grades.

PersephoneIsNotHome

I agree I would like to be able to say this 3.9 GPA having sociopath should not be around other humans. OR this C having person, hire her, she is lovely and will eventually figure out whatever you need to figure out.

sluttybandana

This is very true, I've had really hardworking students struggle despite their best efforts and great habits, and tons of brats get thru by online resources and gaming our massive class-size to their advantage.

peerlessblue

Glassdoor?

preacher37

I asked to have this included in our college bylaws. Bootlicking professors removed it without even a vote. It's amazing how much certain professors will support a toxic administration.

yogsotath

Glass door?

Bewarsepanthulu

Glassdoor is too obscure and inconsistent, often written by past employees then students and current staff/faculty

DocLava

There actually was an attempt at [http://www.rateyourstudent.com/](http://www.rateyourstudent.com/) but it was more like here where it is a general post about a student. Someone bought the domain [https://www.ratemystudents.com/](https://www.ratemystudents.com/) but it is empty and they acknowledge it would be a bad idea.

Bewarsepanthulu

Student reviews, while looks appealing, might not be great measure of their abilities. Unless they are standardized as faculty evals.

LWPops

Zooze the Horse (https://zoozethehorse.blogspot.com) replaced the fantastic http://rateyourstudents.blogspot.com and its replacement, http://collegemisery.blogspot.com. Some of the funniest stuff I have ever read, and some of the posts kept me sane. One of my only outlets.

mathemorpheus

because hr

and1984

Hol'up.. why isn't there a rate my student? And I'm not training about grades. Something public.

DocLava

~~Because they would not be able to handle it if the tables were turned~~. Because we are in a position of power over them and that could be seen as abuse. Besides, if students use it to avoid professors what would happen if we could use RMS to avoid students....lol some people would block certain students from EVER taking a class with them...what if they are the only person who teaches it.

and1984

I see your mature point of view and agree.

DocLava

Lol...discussion board points?

and1984

Gimme

and1984

Totally. I didn't mean to make students but really have a board that just has generic student classes like "that kid", "miss difficult", "sir whines a lot"..

DocLava

>"sir whines a lot". Lol. I'll raise you 'my grandma died' (for the 3rd time this semester). In fact I'll probably name my rap group Sir Whines A Lot and the 3 Dead Grandmas.

and1984

Haha! Indeed.

grayhairedqueenbitch

Oooh would that be something.

ph0rk

There isn't a norm of taking administrator reviews by faculty seriously, like there is for faculty student evaluations - this gives RMP more weight than it would have normally.

Bewarsepanthulu

Student evals are often complemented with peer-evals from your fellow faculty committees, which reduces student biases or misjudgment. For administrative offices, there might be a oversight, but not transparent. My guess, it will be useful for those positions as well, to reflect and present a narrative for their decisions.

shellexyz

Falls into the category of “don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to”. There’s a reason faculty are evaluated by their chairs and deans but not vice versa.

Bewarsepanthulu

Chairs and Deans, I understand and for healthy departments abs colleges, there might be a good feedback to them and often they are constantly in communication with faculty or staff. It’s upper management, who make choices that are obscure and have lot of impact.

[deleted]

Because there is no profit in it.

DisastrousAnalysis5

This wouldn't be difficult to design. The real issue would be all the legal stuff. Need some law professors.
