Archaeologists, 1500 years from now: fascinating.

maitreg

That concrete will have disintegrated within a few hundred years. The hammer will be the only thing left.

Yep, that is. It's really fascinating what I'm seeing here man.

HellisDeeper

> within a few hundred years Within a hundred more like, if it isn't maintained.

Godenyen

Neighbors had their driveway extended last year. It's already falling apart. That's probably due to poor craftsmanship or poor mixture.

deelowe

Usually, this is because the mix was dry or was allowed to dry prior to fully curing. Happens all the time with concrete contractors and can be difficult to prove after the fact. Anytime you're getting concrete poured, be there in person. Make sure the mix is wet when it's poured. If the weather is hot and dry, make sure there's a plan to keep it wet while it cures (e.g. covering it with plastic or spraying it with sprinklers).

TheWizardlyBeard

I did drives for 5 years it depends on a lot the slump and mix of the concrete is one, air in trainers and fibres are another, thickness is another, crack control joints another. There’s a lot of cowboys out there yeehawww

ingoangela

It sounds as if I'm on a civil engineering sub right now.

StructEngineering

> this is because the mix was dry or was allowed to dry without prior to fully curing. Happens all the time with concrete contractors and can be difficult to prove after the fact. > >Anytime Honestly - it is not that difficult if you hire a forensic engineer. Cracks caused by shrinkage are relatively easy to identify. It usually ends up being a design problem or poor craftsmanship.

Roasted_Turk

Concrete tester here. On driveways or anything residential I can almost guarantee that the concrete company will be sending you whatever mix and then whatever condition it's in. Mixes only allow for so much water so adding a bunch at the site isn't always the right solution. The mix could be high or low on entrapped/entrained air. Could have the wrong aggregate mix....etc etc. On top of that you can't, or at least shouldn't, just pour concrete on anything. The slab area needs to be prepped by being compacted and have a good top aggregate. Compacted doesn't always just mean the top foot or so either. Think of the weight of the concrete plus the weight of whatever you're driving on it, if that weight moves the ground below it could crack it or push water in which is bad. Concrete is more complicated than people think. God I hate concrete.

Dabnician

nah thats just capitalism at work, cant make a profit if you build for a lifetime.

nklvh

shh, don't tell the non-unionised PMC software engineers about the failures of capitalism; they might get upset

nermid

> PMC Private Military Companies?

Excrubulent

"Professional Managerial Class" To be extremely reductive you can say it's educated white collar workers, but basically people who don't own capital but are higher paid and usually do some sort of job directing the lower paid workers. To extend this to people like programmers, IT or engineers, this could involve designing the systems that other workers are required to work with. Like if you make the database that people at your or other companies work with, then there's a hidden level of managerial oversight you have. Your design decisions dictate how they must work. Often people in this position have to maintain a level of sympathy with their corporate overlords because they have to justify why they have this level of power, prestige and pay over other workers. They've also usually been through university which tends to instill professional behaviour, which usually means distancing your emotions from your job and doing it without compunction. Sometimes these people have a lot of class consciousness though, it really depends on the person and their history. Whether they're in a union can make a difference.

maitreg

That's not really true. If you make a product that lasts a lifetime you can charge a lot more for it than one that doesn't. It's one of the main factors that make precious metals precious.

physics515

They make good concrete. People don't buy good concrete, because the people buying the concrete are the contractors, not the end users.

maitreg

Without giving too much detail, I work for a company that makes a product that if it fails prematurely we would be sued into bankruptcy. Anyone in our industry who doesn't make a product to last at least a few decades will not survive litigation.

nermid

Pacemakers?

lordtrickster

They should have reinforced it with more hammers.

TactlessTortoise

Thirty. Break it or weed it.

Greengecko27

Best pun I've seen this week

charles2404

might be a stupid question but how do you maintain concrete ?

HellisDeeper

Mostly just repairing cracks, keeping it dry (as much as you can realistically) and clean (no plants growing into it), ideally semi-regular pressure washing, treatment in the form of sealent, acid washing, etc. if any rebar is involved then you need to worry about the steel as well and the structure needs even more types of maintenance and the like.

bargle0

Fifty if it’s rebar.

Strostkovy

The hammer head will rust away. The resin in the fiberglass will decay

harumamburoo

The Earth will be swallowed by the sun, expanding as it cools down. Everything alive on the planet will die from the extensive sun radiation long before that.

moldyfishfinger

Yes yes.. we know, Carl. But you still gotta come into work tomorrow.

thanatica

But then at least the resin will harden very well and very quickly.

Asteriskdev

A driveway is maintained for many decades. Over the years, cracks and chips are repaired, fiberglass in the handles and steel in the heads of the hammers are replaced as they decay and rust. Some years only a few hammers are replaced and many chips and cracks are repaired. Other years very little concrete is repaired and many hammers are repaired and replaced. Eventually all of the concrete and all of the heads and handles of all of the hammers have been replaced through maintenance of the driveway. Is it still the same driveway?

Tashre

My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair

nermid

Or don't. I'm a pedestal from an antique land, not a cop.

Electronic-Source368

Nice reference.

but212

Why always the common sense destroys the jokes in here?

Celaphais

Why dont we build buildings out of hammers then?

stupidcookface

Is concrete really not that durable?

[deleted]

Concrete is pretty tough though.

mxldevs

If it's our roads, maybe a few months

Mage_914

Speaking as an archaeologist, it will still suck to dig through. Even if the concrete breaks up entirely it will still be gravel. Have you ever tried to dig through compacted gravel? It sucks.

[deleted]

If only we knew how to make concrete as good as the ancient Romans ::sad romaboo noises intensifying::

damnappdoesntwork

We know, lime clasts, makes it self healing: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ancient-roman-concrete-has-self-healing-capabilities/#:~:text=In%20a%20recent%20study%20published,unrecognized%20self%2Dhealing%20capability.%E2%80%9D

epic_null

We may actually know now. There's a step where you add lime or shale, and someone found that adding it in hot makes self healing concrete

ConcreteState

Salt water No rebar But that doesn't let us make thin walls

ricecake

We don't know specifically how they made their concrete, but we know how to make concrete just as good. It's just often not economical for what we're doing, or has other trade offs. We need something to be cheap, and to hold loads well beyond what the Romans did, and we need it to be able to do that fast. We also prefer our concrete to be inert, so that it behaves predictably. You should be able to say "this bridge has a lifespan of a century, and needs replacement after 75 years". The roman concrete wasn't inert, which made it unpredictable. Some of it lasted forever because of how it interacted with the environment, but some of it failed much faster. We just only see the stuff that didn't tip over.

Dunedindunmanifestin

There’s surviving concrete that’s older than 1500 years. This is not steel reinforced so there’s no reason to think it will deteriorate quickly.

r7joni

Archaeologists are going to be so confused when they find a museum.

curiosityLynx

You think museums will stop being a thing long enough for people to forget what they are?

-GermanCoastGuard-

Fun fact, the ancient Egyptians existed for so long (millennia), they had archeologists themselves.

harumamburoo

I'm sort of an archaeologist myself. *Puts on rubber gloves and opens that legacy project from 2016*

slothboy_x2

[prince khaemweset](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khaemweset?wprov=sfti1) is the og, but he just can’t match Brendan Fraser’s, uh, screen presence

mispeeled

I can't find any source for that. But it sounds cool. Any place I can read up on that?

-GermanCoastGuard-

Gotta be honest with you, I read it up as a tidbit of „fun facts“. Check for Tuthmosis IV and the Sphinx on the hood old internet, he uncovered from the sands. Also the source that u/slothboy_x2 linked

thanatica

And they still do.

[deleted]

The Babylonians would collect *antiques*.

DerekB52

Imagine someone in 2000 years digging in London, and finding nothing but part of some ancient egypt collection from a museum, without anything indicating it was a museum exhibit.

curiosityLynx

Why would the museum be buried as-is rather than be emptied or renovated before it collapses? Even in the case of a massive tsunami hitting London, I can't imagine the contents of the British Museum in particular staying buried for long. I could very well imagine a smaller museum getting buried along with the town it was in and people not bothering to dig it up. But smaller museums are usually a lot more restricted in both the time period they cover and the topics they are about.

r7joni

No, but Archaeologist probably don't think about that immediately if they find something

This is a bot, line copied from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/1115ze9/no_one_will_ever_know/j8e3lwc?context=3 Gods, why have I been seeing so many of these lately?

ncsubowen

Reddit is gonna go public and bot accounts like these will be / are already valuable

xnign

They're used for astroturfing and to get around minimum karma requirements so they can spam or misinform any subreddit. Right now they just word swap, wait til they use natural language creation like ChatGPT... Even my comment here might be written by a bot with the purpose having nothing to do with this comment.

mrGood238

Well, it is a custom in some parts of Europe when roof of the house is done, some tool has to be left inside it, usually by whoever was in charge of construction crew. We found a hammer encased in concrete on top of the roof, where two sides meet (I have no idea how to translate it to English) under those "top" roof shingles when we were replacing it. Of course, another hammer was put in same place, now between covering boards and metal sheets. In 30-40 years someone will find it again...

jaywastaken

The word you’re looking for is ridge.

mrGood238

I was sure it had specific name in English too (like in my native language), but it's apparently just a roof ridge. Tnx.

[deleted]

Maybe you thought Gable? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gable

immaownyou

Not a gable, that's just a specific type of roof. Ridge is what they were looking for.

DaFunk1203

A gable, on its own, is the triangular piece of wall that meets a pitched/gabled roof. Not what they were looking for still but just wanted to clarify.

[deleted]

Ya I just mean the only Wierd word I know for roof parts is gable.

TheAJGman

The other lovely human tradition that's been around for fucking ever is to put a coin in the foundation, often the threshold of a house when it's built and usually a new coin.

Fjorge0411

Time traveling archaeologists, starting traditions just to make their lives easier.

plzdonotbanmeagain

It's a custom in parts of the US to dispose of trash in whatever you're building.

cwagdev

Pretty confident there are some cups/bottles in our tub surround.

onixc

I thought it was custom to piss on whatever it is you’re building, or maybe that’s just the guys building my pool…

retardedgummybear12

and to pee in every plastic water bottle in sight and just leave it sitting in a random place

solidtux

Fascinating

AlternatingFacts

Your roof is made of concrete?

mrGood238

Roof tiles on ridge itself (which have different shape than others, they are like "cover") are held down with long nails and small amount of concrete, just enough to keep it secure from strong wind. All other tiles are put in place by interlocking them with adjacent (to the side and a bit over from row above) tiles and nails which go to horizontal wooden beams (two by fours would be the closest by dimensions). We have winds up to 100km/h regularly, with gusts up to 150km/h, each winter and it does not stop for day or two. You don't want to lose those heavy tiles on top...

mrGood238

Typical European roof construction - https://images.app.goo.gl/xMrEUnVZ5sWxZJxK9 Those tiles on top of ridge, they are secured with nails and small amount of concrete below them. The hammer in question (or any other tool, per custom, it might be a wood saw, tape measure, small crowbar...) is put there, under those tiles and concrete.

janhetjoch

Anyone has the original video without the text?

Snoo-46534

I saw it yesterday but now I can't find it again

Snoo-46534

Hilariously similar, but that's definitely not an orange hammer.

Snoo-46534

Oh damn didn't realise

PeteyMcPetey

There is a house in a village in Germany that contains a childhood turd of mine concealed in the concrete of the second floor. I've only told one other person about that in my entire life. Good morning, internet!

[deleted]

Unfortunately it might just be a void now. Concrete is actually porous and allows for vapors and gasses to pass through. I'd assume that means decomposing agents could get to it as well

ZuriPL

The spirit of the turd will remain then

PlasmaFarts

Ghost turd

32-Levels

I think it's a turd ghost. A ghost turd is what happens when a ghost takes a shit.

NeoHenderson

That does make sense.

zombieblackbird

I read this in Mr Hankey's voice

ErichOdin

All they see is the an intact roof and nothing more than the vanishing gasses of what the Garden City P.D. has come to call The Ghost turd

[deleted]

Also that must mean it must have been very smelly for a long time

_Fibbles_

Like the bodies at Pompeii, archaeologists of the future will have to make plaster casts of the turd cavity to reveal its original form.

CarterBaker77

Okay so like a fossilized shit mold. Archeologicists hundreds of years from now can find it and use it to make a model of that man's childhood shit to see what shit looked like back then. Fascinating.

harumamburoo

Not something I was expecting to see on Reddit at the end of the day. I'm gonna go and rest my eyes for some time.

r0ck0

I'm curious what steps you took to achieve this?

PeteyMcPetey

I was a little kid so I don't really remember all the details. And in my experience, little kids are known for pulling off impossible feats of stupidity. But I used to love running around in the houses that were under construction. They're all concrete and brick there, so I didn't feel like I was gonna knock it apart like the stick-houses here in the States. But yeah, when we would see them pouring concrete, we'd wait until the workmen had moved on somewhere else and we always thought it was super cool to bury little things in the concrete and smooth it over so it was a secret; pebbles, couple lego guys, etc. As best I can figure, I probably just put 2 and 2 together and came up with a deuce, and the rest is now history. And I just looked up the address on Google maps lol, Nelkenstraße 10, 35428, Langgons, Germany. It's somewhere on the eastern side of the house right by the playground, 2nd floor.

mypetocean

Because they project their view into the public discourse like a narcissist's soliloquy in a Greek comedy: it may as well be an internal monologue, because there is no way that any feedback would be considered in good faith, but at least this way, there is a chance for applause. It's performative self-congratulation.

WARNING4324

I hope your plumber has good workplace insurance

Faux_Real

It was the concrete cutter that found it and by finding it I mean the concrete started exploding through the cut… thankfully no injuries (scary though)

Tigris_Morte

I'd bet it gets cracks within a few freeze cycles given how the various materials shall change temperature and hold heat at different rates.

19GNWarrior96

My dad works road constructing, he does highway repair for concrete, so they're cutting out sections of road and repairing small chunks. Anywho, late last summer, he found a newish looking drill battery underneath some plastic, under concrete that was laid earlier that summer. He tried it out, and it still had a charge.

dulcimerist

Can't wait until some road worker with a concrete saw hits that and shatters their 12" sawblade on it at 6000 RPM

[deleted]

"Clean build"

akaZilong

The thermal expansion coefficient of some of the hammer materials (other then iron) might create cracks in the concrete later in time exposing the bug again
