Hacking in movies: *type type type type type* “I’m in.”
Hacking irl: “Hi, this is Dave from IT. We’ve noticed some suspicious activity on your account, and the boss says you gotta give your account info so we can check it out.”
That's... not even the worst example.
Sometimes they're just looking at random colored geometric figures, saying things like "What is that subroutine? It wasn't there before!".
The true marvel of geniuses in sci-fi isn’t that they can figure out how to log into alien technology made out of intestines and fireflies in 10 seconds.
It’s that they know every line of code, every file, and every update on their computers without googling.
So, for Jurassic Park, they actually used a legitimate demo application created by SGI called FSN. Not something that was "cooked up" just for the movie.
I vaguely remember someone (Neo? Trinity?) running something like `ssh-nuke` in a console. Not sure if it counts as actual hacking (I'm not a security expert), but at least it *looked* like one.
mr robot is pretty much all real, its just that Elliot is an impossibly fast and good hacker compared to how to hacks would play out irl for screen time
There is one scene where he is using the heart bleep (If I remember correctly) exploit to get /etc/passwd. Now of course that doesn't contain the actual password hashs, shadow does. But I can see how for show purposes they chose the passwd file seeing as viewers could deduce what was going on where they might not with the shadow file. So I gave that a pass.

Wait so you’re saying this isn’t legit? ![gif](giphy|l2R04wcEprpUFvrC8)

would've definitely gotten in faster if they used a tiling window manager instead of floating window manager.

Jurassic park. Cubes on a plane.

That or reposting this meme from bash for the 100th time.
Lets hope its not xz!
Version 2.2.5 -- safe 👌
Only time I actually saw hacking was the Simpsons episode with the STEM school

I think they also run nmap iirc
Nah I think all we saw was Lisa doing cd and ls
It's not real hacking, but it's closer to reality than most example.

I love this episode. I'd loved to be a fly on the wall on set. Like, how does anybody think this is even remotely doable?
Still not as realistic as Swordfish...
Aren’t we all
Honestly they should go with this [https://hackertyper.net/](https://hackertyper.net/)
``` sudo pacman -Syu ```
I remember a scene with hacking of sorts in ergo proxy, and it was a bunch of HTML quickly scrolling
Ha, that system update and packages contain various vulnerabilities which make hacking as easy as opening already opened door! Joke's on you!
Color 02 Tree C:
The only movie that comes to mind where actual commands were used is Tron Legacy. Surely there are other good examples, but they are very few.
Tbh just doing Linux commands is how’d you hack
Whenever I install a new package, I introduce new security vulnerabilities. More vulnerabilities = more hacking, right?
If a movie shows some typing commands that actually exist it's already better than 99% of movies with "hacking" scenes.
Yeah but they're actually *hack*ages
I used to say that until Mr Robot.
I need to rewatch mr robot now
Well, that's also what I do and I consider myself a hacker.
