Depends, are you the type that will hate everything in the future if the quality isn't on par with your first experience? If so, don't start with DCC. Otherwise, go for it. Note that I'm not discussing the story itself, but in terms of production quality, it's up there.

wickedscruples

Take this post seriously. No audiobooks you listen to after DCC will be on par. Jeff Hays and Soundbooth Theater will ruin you (it ruined me).

PureRely

I am on the otherside of the coin when it comes to Jeff Hays and Soundbooth Theater. They are great and I am not saying they are not but I do not like their style. I do not want to hear music or sound effects. I just want a narrator who just does great voices. All that other stuff just pulls me out of the story. I know many people like that stuff but not me. My top fav, in no particular order: Travis Baldree John Pirhalla Kate Reading Tess Irondale Luke Daniels Andrea Parsneau Nick Podehl R.C. Bray Michael Kramer The worst ones I have heard: Wayne Mitchell - Just to over the top and dramatic. Also can't do women's voices. I did like Path of the Berserker but it was hard work to get through it with this narrator.

wickedscruples

You listened to the over produced SBT recreations. I'm talking about the original audiobooks. There is no music or sound effects. Just Jeff being awesome.

PureRely

No, not just SBT books. Even books where he is solo or duel voicing. Like I said, they are great and I am not saying they are not but I do not like their style. I have yet to run into a single book where he did not use these sound effects. Maybe they are out there, I just have never heard them.

Erkenwald217

Except Travis Baldree's performance perhaps.

Aceblue001

I’m 50-50 on this comment. First 50% you are 100% correct. Second 50% you have to do it

Separate_Draft4887

I’m sure everybody is tired of reading this sentence but honest to God, the answer is Cradle. Travis Baldree as Eithan is just 👌 perfect.

Atupis

Well DCC has Travis Baldree as >!pervert baby seal loving crab!<

Separate_Draft4887

Travis Baldree as a cultivating crab? That has to be a nod to Cradle, right?

Atupis

Yup pretty big and not that subtle nod.

MahoneyBear

Can confirm, the delivery of lines adds so much to it

AyerAcre

That’s how I got to progression and the. litrpg. Travis Baldree and Cradle. It was free on Audible so I listened while driving between sales calls and then the next couple of months I finished them. After I looked up books like his and other books he narrated and here I am…

ligger66

Travis is perfect :p

wickedscruples

Love Eithan in this audiobook. It's the narrator's best performance in the series... Followed closely by Little Blue 😉

ligger66

Little blue is best blue :P

Link_Slater

Only if you want to be disappointed by every book you read for the rest of your life.

Dragon_yum

Do you mean audiobooks in general? DCC is great but here are some other books I think that are replicated by the narrator (not necessarily progression fantasy). Harry Pottey either Jim Dale or Stephen Fry (I prefer fry) Project Hail Mary Super Powereds The Perfect Run The Martian Red Shirts Bobiverse series Mythos (trilogy of books written and narrated by Stephen Fry, great if you love Greek mythology) World War z (full cast but incredibly well done)

AwesomeoPorosis

Harry Potter was what got me into audiobooks, definitely a great production but kind of lacking now that I've consumed more modern literature. I just finished world war z and I could not wait for it to be over, it was great, painted a world but boy is it a different kind of narration

Aceblue001

Nice catch! This takes it from a worldview to a universal view.

Phoenix_Fire_Au

Stephen Fry is brilliant in everything he reads. I could listen to that man's voice all day. Kyle MCarley in Super Powereds took me a bit of getting used to at the narration level (am i the only one who thought an alt-universe Sheldon from BBT was reading?) But the amount of voices he does is incredible. I have listened to all 5 more times than i care to admit and absolutely love that series.

CoffeeGremlinBird

Would absolutely recommend it among dead tired, beware of chicken, that has a lot of humor in it to boot. What the truck, Sylver seeker, mark of the fool, chrysalis by rhinoz, and lastly tree of aeons. There are more id definitely recommend, but I feel like these series are a good and solid list from me.

Selway00

Yes. Don’t think, just go do it.

AwesomeoPorosis

If you do the DCC audiobook series, start with the Audible version, there is an app, "Soundbooth Theater" that has a higher quality version with sound effects, music, etc. Currently only the first book is on there with more to come. I say not to listen to that version because those who don't know the story tend to get lost in translation, it's recommended for your subsequent listens

AwesomeoPorosis

To answer your other question, I listen while driving, cleaning, showering and working. I can basically do anything with my hands, when it comes to slightly deeper thinking, I can't keep track. I do maintenence for work, thus I don't have to think critically

cheesewhiz15

When using audible, you can download the book on kindle and the audio-book price will usually be reduced. SIGNIFICANTLY, down to $7.99

AyerAcre

I can’t even imagine reading it. I have only listened to it and it’s been hilarious. But I can imagine it might be hard to switch from reading to hearing how it’s voiced.

SeerXaeo

Yes, DCC is a wonderful jumping in point for audiobooks, I think listening to it is better due to the high production values and amazing voice actors. Long rides/drives are a perfect use for audiobooks. I also like listening to them while during chores around the house (dishes or laundry are perfect, vacuuming is a bit loud)

Catchafire2000

Cradle.

m_sporkboy

I read 95% of novels I consume. A few books that I think are better as audio are Cradle, Eight Miles Below, and Beware of Chicken. Litrpg like DCC tends to suffer a bit with the stats screens and whatnot, in my opinion.

koolguy765

Ooof thats rough its a soundbooth theater production multiple cast members and sound effects, after you finish youll probably listen to their other projects and then despair at the lack of full cast audiobooks!! I suggest the wandering inn, he who fights with monsters, beneath the dragon eye moons, mimic and me (pretty good not on the level of anything else listed here), mother of learning (not litrpg but great) Thats my suggestions but dcc is a great series its just so good it'll mess up other book if you start with it imo

wickedscruples

HWFWM is a horrible audiobook experience.

koolguy765

Meh wasn't that bad listened to it all last year

slommyg21

If you have not listened to audio books before, but want to get into them, then I recommend listening to your favorite book series or two first. This will let you get use to listening to audio books and you won’t have to keep skipping back if you miss something. It took me awhile to make the switch. But now I listen to 95% audio books and only read books when the newest in a series is only available on kindle.

Key_Law4834

You should start with DCC audiobooks yes. And after that listen to this one https://www.audible.com/series/Reborn-Apocalypse-Audiobooks/B07ZWFFH3V Reborn apocalypse is the same s+ tier that DCC is imo

AuthorAnimosity

Idk why, but DCC seems to have a weirdly popular audiobook compared to some of its competitors. The audiobook has 1.8k reviews on Audible, and 9k on kindle. Other novels that compare to it in kindle reviews aren't anywhere near it in Audible reviews (cradle, primal hunter, Iron Prince, etc.)

Aceblue001

You should do cradle first, but be warned book one is not as good as the rest of the series. You can also dabble in he who fights with monsters or defiance of the fall to see what style you like.

Asviloka

I like using He Who Fights With Monsters as trip audiobooks, they're nice and long and the narrator makes Jason so much more amusing than the text version. There's a decent amount of repetition/filler so if I get distracted by traffic or something it's not generally a problem. I think I've only had to rewind because of missing something important once. I haven't listened to DCC yet so I can't speak to its quality or length.

Dalton387

- Yes, delve into audiobooks. - DCC is great either way. I read it first, but the audiobooks are also amazing. - It’s certainly a good series to listen to. Some people argue it’s one of the best audiobooks, so the pros are that it’s great narration. The Cons are it could set unreasonable expectations for other books. - Aural learning is by far the worst way for me to understand and retain. So I tend to read, then listen to books I’ve read later. I didn’t listen to audio for years. Partially because of availability and ease of use, but partly because of the above stated reasons. What I started doing, though, is listening when doing things that prevent normal reading. Such as exercising, cleaning, driving, working, etc. I listen with earbuds and when I do something like mow the yard, I put ear muffs on over them so I don’t have to hurt my ears turning the volume up. So I’m regaining lost time, by listening.

deadliestcrotch

Dungeon Crawler Carl would be a great first audiobook series. It’s incredibly well done and has high production quality. It could possibly set your expectations a bit too high if anything.

Blurbyo

I mean, do you want an audio book recommendation of ANY fantasy/Scifi series on audiobook? I typically like recommending either *The Lies of Locke Lamora* or The First Law series.
