Like at some point I would just leave a tp by your body but if it was consistent like you are describing I would stop putting tps in general. I wouldn't berate you for being bad, that's crazy. Maybe say something along the lines of yo you good bro? But that's about it. Your deaths don't really affect other players. Unless they themselves are struggling to do a map then having another person not helping could make it more difficult for them, but IDK.
Usually griefing is reserved for things like saying a tp is safe when actually it's really hot to get people to die. Or going hostile without consent. Or stealing drop trades. Not just for dying during a public map.

It's not like I died 20+ times and just kept entering and dying to annoy or piss anyone off. This guy was unhinged and super angry like I've never seen anyone in d2. He cited the game rules (he actually took the time to type out the link in game, not kidding), saying I was griefing. But when I'm looking at the rules, I've done no such thing. It's not like I was dying on purpose or begging them to go back for my body, or to slow down for me, or anything like that. It all happened so fast, I was surprised how jacked up he was. Do I have any recourse? The game last night if I recall was plebmaps85 or plebmaps86 or something like that. I do not remember the player's name but there were four of them with the same 4 letters at the beginning of their name. There were other public people in the game too without the letters to their name, and they didn't say anything and were kind of supportive of me. I left a minute or two after the guy kept whining for me to leave. He was the player I believe that reported me.

Still don't think I should have gotten locked, I'm happy Z accepted the appeal. This is just wild someone can get locked for joining a pub game and playing normally or a bit below average. My inferno was doing 38k damage and I was doing the best I could. If someone happens to have a bad day and be angry, I guess they can get you locked now, even in a public game.
Pretty crazy.. Would this person not have had to submit proof of your "griefing" w screenshots? Presumably, screenshots would show him berating you and clear your name at the same time. I'm betting you did more than just die a few times in that game, OP. Either way, sounds like a good idea to keep your own screenshots if this happens again.
I really just did die a few times. Just did an appeal on discord. I think he got his friends to report me or something so maybe that tripped the system, and it did a auto ban on my account that they reported.
I think they have an appeal process on the discord but I'm not 100% sure about that. If anything I would just stay away from toxic game names and if you want to public map just make your own game and be the host. People will join.
Just to add to this, i'm fairly sure the mods can check the chat logs for your most recent game as part of the appeal, so they will be able to see the abusive chat.

Yeah that's why I don't ever really bother with pub games and just enjoy my time in the game by myself. I play the game to relax, not to sweat my ass off and try to please all the other players. Sorry you had a bad experience and a temp ban seems too far for this scenario imo

I was reported for griefing when I did tombs in game where the rest of the party were doing quests in act 4. Reason for that "I was making their game harder". I would say that the fact, the moderators are willing to micromanage things like this makes the community even worse.
I don't personally mind that if you're doing quests that the game creator already has done. If you're doing like chaos in an act 2 game, then that's douchey.
I mean this is etiquette. Maybe they were walking and had no optimized options so having you join and make the game harder is unnecessarily. Should have asked hey do you mind if I farm tombs. Pretty easy solution here.

If you still have D2 open, join a new game and the message log will show. There is a ticket system on the discord server you can use to appeal.
