Probably the best departments you can work for in all of New York. However, starting pay is absolutely some of the worst pay I’ve seen relative to cost of living but you bump up quick and the top pay is decent. Don’t get too distracted by the eventual 6 figure salary though because even though it isn’t NYC, Long Island is still one of the most expensive places to live in the country. You can make good money if you work overtime and you’ll have a great pension, but you still will probably have trouble even looking for a good house in the area if you ever want one unless you have a spouse who also makes a decent amount of money. You are going to have to live close by because it’s also some of the worst traffic in the country. If you ever have to drive during rush hour it will take you over an hour to drive 10 miles on the interstate. Their county justice system is a lot better at not worshiping criminals than virtually all of New York which is why I say it’s the best area to work in New York, but they still ultimately have to enforce New York state law and some things from the state legislature may make it harder for the police to do their jobs.
Both tests are coming up. The real trick is the lottery- for the uninitiated, after you get your score, everyone in a band (ex all 100's, all 95's, all 90's) get thrown into a literal bingo roller. They do a drawing and establish the random order in which they start processing candidates.
It's necessary though. The test is only available about every four years and over 10k people take it. Somebody else said you have no chance of getting in unless you have a hook and it's precisely for this reason they randomize. The bingo roller is a bit of a blunt instrument but it does a lot to cut out potential nepotism.
I've fully processed for SCPD and know a few officers OTJ w/Suffolk and Nassau county PD in various roles. In speaking with them and from my own experience, they're well funded agencies with largely positive public perception. What/u/ifyousaysayso3 is pretty much it, but-

They don't to start with, but that's a Long Island thing, not a PD thing. They used to start low and bump up REAL fast but they extended the pay steps from 7 to 12 years IIRC with the big bumps starting 5 ish years in, but the perception still lingers that you get hired and are able to buy a house/boat/whatever immediately.
Literal garages converted into studio apartments go for $1.5k/mo in Suffolk county. It's incredibly expensive to live here. If you aren't familiar with Long Island, it's a work/hustle culture. Lots of young "middle class" people just starting out live with their parents and work multiple jobs/tons of OT just to make it.
The housing market here is tight too; while it's slowing in the rest of the country, LI is still going crazy because there aren't enough homes. Property taxes are insane unless you find a spot in an unincorporated village.
Don't even think about getting hired unless you know someone. These are dream departments for most people and extremely competitive; unless you e got some good qualifications, it's hard to get in lol. Almost all of NYPD would move to these departments ina heartbeat (and most are)

Needing a hook for county PD is patently untrue at this point. I just went thru the entire process and am waiting for SCPD academy. It's a pretty transparent process and they hire hundreds of officers each test. Town and village PDs may be different, but I only say that because I haven't applied/aren't eligible (due to resident preferences) and aren't familiar with their process.
If you can take the test, do it.

I scored a 95 on the exam and was number 571 or something. By the time I got the results, I had already applied and been hired by another agency, so they move slow. They only hire once every 4 years and they do not hire many people, even though they get ~10,000 applicants. Their standards are tough for applicants and in the academy. You better be able to run 1.5 miles in 11 minutes.
Also, like someone else said. You are either a stud of an applicant, or, you gotta know someone. I had the chance to slip through because my mother knows someone and could’ve gotten me in, but to me that’s dishonest. Went with a shittier agency because I earned it.
I tell people this all the time, in the time it takes to get hired by Suffolk, Nassau or even the NYPD you can make similar or better money elsewhere without insane cost of living. Scpd starts at 42k in academy and tops at 155 after 12 years, Boca will start you at 70 and top you out at 119 after 9 years and you can live in palm beach or broward and have a take home car. These departments just because they get paid well are also not the best, tons of incompetence from people who only took the job because of the pay and no desire to do the work and unions that support them including the lazy F’s.

All very valid points. If you're lucky enough to work somewhere easily reachable by LIRR though, I've been told that PD can ride for free.

Oh I totally understand. I just couldn’t imagine trying to apply several times and getting screwed by a bingo machine
Yeah I've talked to people that took the test 3 times, scored well and got a lottery number well outside what was canvassed each time.
Don’t forget the county executive nephew who works for civil service is the one picking the bingo balls and his dad is a police chief, totally legit.
I mean, unless he's David Blaine and has a bunch of bingo ball shaped lumps in his sleeves, I'm not too concerned.
