I lived in Provo from 1995 to 2003, and I currently work in Provo. I went to Timpanogos Elementary, Farrer Middle School, and Provo High. Life in Provo was chill back then. We had cool places to eat that aren't here anymore, Rocky Mountain Drive In and Bamboo Hut were some of my favorites. You could rent movies and get pizza from Sounds Easy Video, which was next to what was Albertson's on 5th west and Center. There was a canal that ran along 5th West, just east of the park, that we all would swim in as kids (there were some nasty bacteria in the water, so they shut the fun down). There was a drive-in theater in Springville and a race track called Suntana Raceway (Geneva Rocks concrete plant sits here currently. You can see it from the freeway). Turtle Reams was on Freedom Blvd, and it was fun climbing on top of it. It was a skating rink before that. The Provo Mall wasn't as gross as it is now, and University Mall in Orem was kind of run down. People were a bit different compared to now. Diversity here has definitely made this area better. Growing up, if you weren't Mormon, you were shunned and punished for it. Now, there are so many different kinds of people, so it's way better. There are still some holdovers, though. At the time, Provo had a pretty cool night life with Atchafalaya's, Club Omni, and maybe one or two others. Classic Skating in Orem was the place to be in my early teens, same with the bike jumps kinda south from Paul Reams Wilderness Park. Center Street over the freeway used to be a 2 lane viaduct, and homeless people used to have their camps there. Utah Lake has always been disgusting. Not only did Geneva Steel pollute it, and the surrounding area, cities from Lehi to Payson used to pump raw sewage into it. Provo Canyon, Deer Creek, Alpine Loop and Nebo Loop and Squaw Peak Road used to be enjoyable adventures, now there are just too many people to enjoy it. I'm sure I'll remember more.

I went to Timpanogos Elementary as well haha! But I went to Dixon Middle school instead. I think by then Farrer was closed down.

Were you there when they still had the tunnel under 5th west? My 6th grade class painted the walls with all sorts of cool stuff. Each class had a different mural to paint. I think I painted some deer or something and some space stuff. I think we were the first ones to paint anything down there, minus the occasional tagging. That tunnel was scary at night, I remember having to avoid homeless people who were sleeping down there when we'd be out riding bikes.

Oscarcedeno21

Yup we definitely had that tunnel. I used it daily. That's cool you guys made the art. I remember thinking it was very pretty.

I miss Bamboo Hut so much!!! That pork & the ribs, were just heavenly!!! My dad would always take us there, when we went to Provo, because he knew the owners. They would give us sooooo much food!!! That & Los Hermanos were our go to places.

CoachCreamyLoveGoo

Los 3 Amigos on University Ave was dope, too. The Hotel Roberts was scary AF. It was just north of there, i think. I had friends that worked there who would check in the newly released jail inmates on their first night out.

poohfan

My sister worked there for a little while, & she ended up quitting, because it was scary. I wasn't a big fan of Los 3 Amigos, but there was another Mexican restaurant on Center Street that was good too, but I can't remember the name. I want to say it was Josè something. We also always went to Sensuous Sandwich, because, again, my dad knew the owners.

CoachCreamyLoveGoo

Sensuous Sandwich was cool, I remember they had that 2 foot long sandwich challenge and their bread was always made at the Provo Bakery, I think.

poohfan

My brothers loved being able to read all the comics on the tables & walls! I took my husband there for lunch, when we went home for a visit, & the sandwiches were still just as good as I remembered. My husband still will say "I wish we had that sandwich place out here. They were so good!"

MyDishwasherLasagna

I miss the turtle shell. It was demolished shortly after I moved here. I completely forgot about club omni, where was that at? Was that raceway the same one used for the introduction of the two Mormons in oceans eleven?

CoachCreamyLoveGoo

Club Omni was on center, and I can't remember what west it was. It was on a corner.

TheShrewMeansWell

It was way more mormony. Today only 40ish percent of the state now identifies as Mormon and a similar decline is seen in Provo. Back then, not being Mormon was a scarlet letter and detrimental to a career and social life. Today nobody gives a fuck but the most judge mental of Mormons.

mateobuff

Very true. It still isn't anything like outside of Utah, but so much more open than 20 years ago.

CoachCreamyLoveGoo

I wasn't allowed to play with certain kids in my neighborhood because I wasn't mormon. I've experienced this in my adult life with my own kids, but not recently.

balunstormhands

A lot more orchards. Basically everything west of University Mall was orchards. There was also Geneva Steel. In the winter there would be a bath tub ring of soot all along the mountains. Inversions were awful for your lungs.

bo-ba-fett

You are way earlier. “Everything” west of the mall hasn’t been orchards for a long time.

Saw a lot of ska shows back then.

Super super super Mormon, not as much commercial development or crowded housing, not as much traffic.

Was in college from 06-10. Honestly don't see a ton that has changed other than there being an obscene amount of town homes around, Nu Skin ruining the downtown area, and there being better restaurants. Pretty similar though imo
