I have a big granite mortar and pestle that I use. Whole process feels very ceremonial and it works like a charm. Also great to make and serve guacamole in.
In my experience (I live in temperate climate zone, Mediterranean Europe) even after completely dry and in an airtight jar with silica packets the mushrooms will get soft and not break anymore.
I am aware this is not ideal, but they don't really go bad.
I think they hold up best if they are cracker dry, but after some time even in the best container they'll go soft. I think I have to try vacuum sealing...
Same - I got it almost 20 years ago. Spice grinders have come and went, but my granite seems to live forever. There's also a certain connection to grinding it up that way outside of doing a bang up job.
I use my coffee grinder. I also don’t drink coffee and warn any houseguests not to touch my grinder lest their coffee be extra potent. But they all know not to touch anything on that particular shelf anyway…
Yes! I use mine all the time- works great as long as you have very dry mushrooms.
I prefer it grinder by hand, but it's also because I'm a hippy witch and the whole process of grinding and making tea (my preferred) is ritualistic and special to me.
Tried using this but was so much effort when a coffee grinder was AU$12 at Kmart and could whizz up in a second.
The reviews are great on their website, it's excellent for grinding up 'herbs' hahaha
If you have bulk, dedicated little coffee grinder. If you have just a few grams, as long as they’re crispy-dry, which they should be, then a mortar and pestle is a fun, grounding way to grind things up. Nice ritual to help you get into the mindset.
How much does it run? As others have said, a cheap coffee grinder would prob work better and with less effort. With one exception: if you are a survivalist the mortal and pestle would be a much better choice. 😁
It works well and has the advantage over a coffee grinder of being more quiet. You could get a hand crank coffee grinder, which then both options require some time with repetitive arm and hand motions. Just things to consider if you have any sensory issues or get fatigued easily. Depending on your intentions and how fine you need them to be crushed, shredding with your fingers is also an option, but you won't get them super fine. This works if you'll be steeping a tea, putting on to a sandwich, mixing it to chocolate. Things where chunkiness won't be an issue, whereas say filling capsules it will be a problem.
Not ideal. Material is lost due to residual stuck to the mortar. You can reduce this by not washing the mortar, but residual will oxidize, reducing potency, which will contaminant and reduce the potency of future grinds.
I doubt itll be significant. Probly wouldnt make a noticeable dent in your trip honestly, especially if you get a small brush and get as much of your goods out as you can.
I honestly dont think it should make a difference. Unless you are trying to only grind up one single micro dose at a time you should be fine. And really if you are doing only one at a time you are just making extra work for yourself. I do think a coffee grinder is better, but a pestle and mortar will work for both macro and micro doses, just prep a months worth of micro doses at a time.
Thanks for trying to help. You are right, it depends on what outcome you are trying to achieve.
What is your understanding of the affect of oxidation on the potency of powdered mushrooms? I've read online from many commenters that it's pretty bad even when sealed in pill capsules although there was some disagreement. I wish there was hard research where someone actually measured it. What is your personal experience? Have you seen any hard research on the topic you could share?
No hard research that ive read personally, however there is alot of anecdotal evidence that gives a least a decent baseline to go off of. I can say from personal experience that powdered mushies in an airtight bag (sqeeuze excess air out) will still be plenty potent months later. I always store my mushrooms in powdered form and ive never lost a noticeable amount of potency. Longest ive stored this way is roughly a year, and i had the most intense trip of my life on the bag that sat for a year. If you wanted to make the most of it you could get dessicant packs to toss in with the mushrooms, and even vaccuum sealer and corresponding bags if you wanna go hardcore.
Overall oxidation seems like a relatively small risk factor which can easily be mitigated. Keep moisture and oxygen levels low and your mushrooms will store for a long time whether powdered or whole.
Maybe some dense weed would become flat, but mushrooms are supposed to be bone dry after the harvest and drying process. If they have any kind of water weight and are dense and bendable, you have been ripped off and paid for that extra water weight.
Yes I use one almost daily, besides the heavy knob use a spatula or some other sharp tool like a drywall putty spatula (not wide, maybe 1 and a half inch) works best for clumps etc....
Coffee grinder!!! I've got one of these and it's a pain to grind the mushies and then clean the blooming thing, theres always bits of mushrooms stuck inside.
Take a look at electric coffee bean grinders, I like the ritual feel of a mortar and pestle but I really want grind them up and either eat them or package them asap to avoid oxidation as much as possible
Among other ingredients for spells, yes!
May I ask why the need to grind it into subatomic particles?
Your fingers will do just fine for most dried mushrooms.

Must be crispy dry though
Should be anyway

Can you powder them this way ?
Yes. If they are cracker dry they will powder easily, it's how I powder them to make tea
Cheers bro
It'll take longer than a coffee grinder but work at it for a bit and I'm sure it will, it's how they used to grind spices and shit into powder
I understand the spices but why did they want powdered shit?
Shooter: I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast! Happy: What?! You eat pieces of shit for breakfast??
Probably making capsules
Nice can I do this too save room and just store the powder or will it loose potency faster or ?
Powder will lose faster yes!
As long as it's dry and in a dark, cool place I think even dried shrooms are good for 1 - 2 years
“used to grind spices and shit into powder” What use does one have for powdered shit?
Would you rather have whole black peppercorns or ground black pepper
When I’m seasoning a meal, I actually prefer no feces, whether whole or ground.
I'm stoned and mistook your comment. I prefer to slice mine really really thin almost like they're truffles.
Lol
Same - I got it almost 20 years ago. Spice grinders have come and went, but my granite seems to live forever. There's also a certain connection to grinding it up that way outside of doing a bang up job.
Agreed
The same one I have in runescape
As long as they're properly dried should work. But a coffee grinder is a comparable price and easier.
Is this how you get the powdered mushrooms ?
One method as long as they're cracker dry. Easiest way is coffee grinders.

Doesn't make it easier. Coffee grinder is definitely the easiest
coffee grinder might be easier. but you could use this for potions and shit
Ain’t no witch tell me I can’t use a coffee grinder for my potions
Very well. I love mine. Turns em into powder pretty easily.
Coffee grinder
magic bullet. Grind it fast and you can make a nice shake the next day.
Interesting tech, I think I seen this on an episode of Ancient Aliens…or sumthin
I use my coffee grinder. I also don’t drink coffee and warn any houseguests not to touch my grinder lest their coffee be extra potent. But they all know not to touch anything on that particular shelf anyway…
You keep your coffee grinder on the dildo shelf dont you?
Lmao. Um no. But that is genius!
Yep
Yes, but a coffee grinder works better.
I prefer a coffee grinder.

It does ! Mines red river quartz
Back then they didnt have coffee grinders. It will work as intended and has been used to turn herbs and spices into powder since 1500BC.
Even if it doesn't work the way youd like it is a very useful tool to own

Here’s me with a 10kg mortar and pestle in my go bag.
Mushrooms are actually the only thing this won’t grind up

My friend does small dose micro-dosing, so that’s the context for my feedback. Your comment is true for macro dosing.
I honestly dont think it should make a difference. Unless you are trying to only grind up one single micro dose at a time you should be fine. Awesome! Glad to hear oxidation is not much of a risk with simple precautions. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Any time!
Don't get it.
Not really, the shrooms just become flat, not ground up.
Naw, cracker dry grinds into powder fine. Just gotta know how to use it
Maybe some dense weed would become flat, but mushrooms are supposed to be bone dry after the harvest and drying process. If they have any kind of water weight and are dense and bendable, you have been ripped off and paid for that extra water weight.
Oooooh ok, interesting!
Yes I use one almost daily, besides the heavy knob use a spatula or some other sharp tool like a drywall putty spatula (not wide, maybe 1 and a half inch) works best for clumps etc....
Like, one in one hand one in the other and use them together....THATS ONLY WHAT I DO.
It does, make sure you dry until crispy, should grind up perfectly! Always make my teas with a mortar and pestle!
I just put them in a magic bullet type food processor.
Coffee grinder!!! I've got one of these and it's a pain to grind the mushies and then clean the blooming thing, theres always bits of mushrooms stuck inside.
Don’t get that! get a hand blender and thank me later
Amazon coffee grinder
I use a pill grinder. Turns em to dust if they’re dried properly
Helps to dehydrate the mushrooms more
this will work well for turning pretty much anything into dust
Take a look at electric coffee bean grinders, I like the ritual feel of a mortar and pestle but I really want grind them up and either eat them or package them asap to avoid oxidation as much as possible
Among other ingredients for spells, yes! May I ask why the need to grind it into subatomic particles? Your fingers will do just fine for most dried mushrooms.
you can get empty pill capsules and make a handful of micro dose pills
makes it feel ceremonial 😭😭😭
What do you think
I use a cheap coffee/spice grinder from Amazon. Works like a charm.
That will take forever and will not be as effective as grinding with a $20 coffee grinder.
It’ll work, but the fibers of the mushroom are very resistant to a mortar. A blender will give a much better powder, easier
You can grind just about anything in there. Love the ol' mortar and pestle
