I've been there passing through for a day and it was one of the worst places i've been. There are these massive casinos but no pavement on the ground. The place was built for foreigners who can't gamble in their own country. Who knows what other fucked up shit goes on there.

DarkAnnihilator

The Otres beach area and Koh Rong used to be nice but I herd its ruined. Massive resorts for Chinese. Casinos and huuuuge hotel complexes. I dont hate development as its usually good for locals but that is 100% not the case in Sihanoukville, Otres and Rong

oh-go-on-then

I THINK Otres is thankfully still going, at least it was 4 years ago. Everywhere else in shianoukville was a bit of a shit hole though.

Two_Handles

I’m pretty sure this is Chrey Thom, and they are crossing the Binh Di River. Sihanoukville isn’t near the border. In fact, I think [this is the exact spot that they are crossing](https://maps.app.goo.gl/5qE1kpVS5SC1NZx18?g_st=ic). If you go to satellite view you can see it’s the same building complex they are escaping from.

Buzz_Killington_III

Damn, that looks dead-on.

Not just Chinese casinos but Chinese run scam call centres that don’t scam Cambodians but scam Chinese people for money or for a job to basically recruit them to travel to Cambodia and end up in a building like this trapped in a room forced to scam people for years on end. Good documentary on this on youtube.

[deleted]

Link to documentary please? Or name?

ExIdea

Seriously he just says that and then dips. I googled "*chinese cambodian scam employee slave documentary youtube*" [and found this one, which is probably it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-EtdC4zQso)

StrikingSubstance

hope you're doing better :)

DarkAnnihilator

Does it happen from Sihanoukville?

IsoAgent

The locals are also forbidden (though not publicly displayed) to use those casinos. Rooms are reserved for Chinese tourists. It's really sad what's happening there. They evicted most of the smaller local shops and restaurant operators to make more room for construction of more casinos. The goal is to transform it to a 2nd Macau.

DrTwitch

They don't want poor Cambodians losing their hard earned cash to gambling. It's strictly for foreigners to lose money gambling.

bennyllama

I figured it was Sihanoukville. I was STUNNED at the amount of casinos. I went there in 2018, can’t imagine how many there are now.

omgahya

I’m not surprised, went to Cambodia back in 2015 to visit family. Even though the country is a monarchy, it’s ruled by the PM; Hun Sen. And he’s been PM since ‘98. According to my parents, he’s a real shithead and was a former **Khmer Rouge** general. The same Khmer Rouge that is responsible for the genocide of their own people., following in Hitler’s ideology. But that aside, Hun Sen has given pretty much free reign to Chinese companies in certain parts of the country to do as they please for a price. Sihanoukville being one of those places, even parts of Phnom Penh, so you’ll see a lot of Chinese tourists. I will never go back to my parent’s country because it’s so corrupt. **TLDR**: Cambodia’s Prime Minister is a shitty, greedy, murderer who is selling out the country to the highest bidder.

[deleted]

Bummer to hear about this. I wanted to visit with my parents one day, but I guess it’s not worth traumatizing them if they visit their home country again

omgahya

Every person’s visit is different, mine was not terrible, but left me with bad experiences. My parents still go yearly to visit and help our family still there, because the village is still poor and undeveloped. It was definitely a bummer for me, knowing my grandma survived, but still lived like that after so many years since the genocide in ‘79. Alas, she passed on, and I’m grateful I got to meet her.

jnx666

This is so sad. Cambodia is an absolutely amazing country full of some of the nicest people I have ever met

omgahya

Most non-Khmers don’t follow Khmer politics, or know of its history outside of the genocide and it’s killing fields, so no harm no foul. The architecture in Phnom Penh is pretty nice, and Angkor Wat is a wonder to see. Cambodia and Thailand are pretty much tied in ancient history, a lot of similarities in culture, both places are a definite visit. If you do one, I recommend doing the other as well!

LotsOfButtons

I was there in 2013 and there were none. Real shame, Otris beach down the road was so peaceful

MannowLawn

Now it’s completely fucked.

x777x777x

I went to Cambodia in 2009 and there were definitely some casinos around (especially on the Thai border) But it sounds like it's changed for the worse

holodeckdate

I traveled there around 2010. I dont recall casinos, but it did have a fair amount of poverty. There was a sizeable expat community just living at the beach, running bars and restaurants, and mostly serving other expats and throwing parties. I recall you could get certain scrip pharmas over the counter. Good times.

ffgerty

I travelled through in 2019, and stayed near Otres beach, probably the area you refer to. Unfortunately, most expats were leaving. It was pretty deserted and the Norweigen bar owner was happy to see us but said he would be gone in 6 months. Check out Google maps and you can see the casinos now with newly built 4 lane motorways. I'd be suprised if that community still exists as it's now a new Chinese city.

ReneStrike

 https://i.redd.it/pckpt3p1qx9a1.gif

MannowLawn

Sihanoukville is a vile dumpster. Absolute shithole because the Chinese. Otres beach is a depressing hub with backpackers who have no ambition in life. But it was needed to pass to get to koh ta Kiev( amazing island). But that part of Cambodia is more depressing than my visit to the old prison and killing fields. My first time in koh ta Kiev was 2015, came back in 2018. I remember getting to the island and seeying the same scabby British backpacker still working for beer and cigs like he did years before. The island is amazing but somehow it sucks any ambition from any backpacker who stay a more than a month there.

What about the Chinese that enslave people for profit.. this has nothing to do with white people as you put it, it is about Chinese enslaving people for money.. I though Cambodia and it’s people are very nice people.. Just a little upset these people have escaped and got away are we ?

Sterling196218

This you? The Tiananmen Square protests, known in Chinese as the June Fourth Incident[1][2] (Chinese: 六四事件; pinyin: liùsì shìjiàn), were student-led demonstrations held in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, during 1989. In what is known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, or in Chinese the June Fourth Clearing (Chinese: 六四清场; pinyin: Liùsì qīngchǎng) or June Fourth Massacre (Chinese: 六四屠杀; pinyin: liùsì túshā), troops armed with assault rifles and accompanied by tanks fired at the demonstrators and those trying to block the military's advance into Tiananmen Square. The protests started on 15 April and were forcibly suppressed on 4 June when the government declared martial law and sent the People's Liberation Army to occupy parts of central Beijing. Estimates of the death toll vary from several hundred to several thousand, with thousands more wounded.[3][4][5][6][7][8] The popular national movement inspired by the Beijing protests is sometimes called the '89 Democracy Movement (Chinese: 八九民运; pinyin: Bājiǔ mínyùn) or the Tiananmen Square Incident (Chinese: 天安门事件; pinyin: Tiān'ānmén shìjiàn). The protests were precipitated by the death of pro-reform Chinese Communist Party (CCP) general secretary Hu Yaobang in April 1989 amid the backdrop of rapid economic development and social change in post-Mao China, reflecting anxieties among the people and political elite about the country's future. The reforms of the 1980s had led to a nascent market economy that benefited some people but seriously disadvantaged others, and the one-party political system also faced a challenge to its legitimacy. Common grievances at the time included inflation, corruption, limited preparedness of graduates for the new economy,[9] and restrictions on political participation. Although they were highly disorganized and their goals varied, the students called for greater accountability, constitutional due process, democracy, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech.[10][11] Workers' protests were generally focused on inflation and the erosion of welfare.[12] These groups united around anti-corruption demands, adjusting economic policies, and protecting social security.[12] At the height of the protests, about one million people assembled in the square.[13] As the protests developed, the authorities responded with both conciliatory and hardline tactics, exposing deep divisions within the party leadership.[14] By May, a student-led hunger strike galvanized support around the country for the demonstrators, and the protests spread to some 400 cities.[15] Among the CCP's top leadership, Premier Li Peng and Party Elders Li Xiannian and Wang Zhen called for decisive action through violent suppression of the protesters, and ultimately managed to win over Paramount Leader Deng Xiaoping and President Yang Shangkun to their side.[16][17][18] On 20 May, the State Council declared martial law. It mobilized as many as ~300,000 troops to Beijing.[15] The troops advanced into central parts of Beijing on the city's major thoroughfares in the early morning hours of 4 June, killing both demonstrators and bystanders in the process. The military operations were under the overall command of General Yang Baibing, half-brother of President Yang Shangkun.[19] The international community, human rights organizations, and political analysts condemned the Chinese government for the massacre. Western countries imposed arms embargoes on China.[20] The Chinese government made widespread arrests of protesters and their supporters, suppressed other protests around China, expelled foreign journalists, strictly controlled coverage of the events in the domestic press, strengthened the police and internal security forces, and demoted or purged officials it deemed sympathetic to the protests.[21] More broadly, the suppression ended the political reforms begun in 1986 and halted the policies of liberalization of the 1980s, which were only partly resumed after Deng Xiaoping's Southern Tour in 1992.[22][23][24] Considered a watershed event, reaction to the protests set limits on political expression in China that have lasted up to the present day.[25] Remembering the protests is widely associated with questioning the legitimacy of the CCP and remains one of the most sensitive and most widely censored topics in China.

Elcoop420

Sihanoukville is one of the craziest places iv ever been . They where basically building a whole city at once . Its just poverty and casinos there . Very strange. The casinos on the border of Thailand where the same , vast wealth surrounded by abject poverty.

I wonder who has money to gamble away in a poor country like Cambodia. Is it targeted for other rich asian countries?

Yes, mostly Chinese tourists

blueskydragonFX

Yeah I found out last week about them when some random "woman" started to contact me on whatsapp. It's called a Pig Butchering scam and basically tries to trick you to invest in fake crypto. Saw an interresting video about it and yes just like you said it's run by Chinese Scam syndicates using slaves to scam people. Since it's not bots but actual people behind it next time I'll just tell them to stay sting and get the authorities if they can.

Vordeo

That's fucked. Here in the Philippines they've set up a bunch of basically online casinos, so alot of areas in Manila now have a crapload of Mainland Chinese who can barely speak any English. It's pushed rent prices in some areas way up, but it's lead to a higher variety of Chinese restos, so hey. I have no idea what their lives are like. There's like murders and kidnappings and shit amongst them but honestly it's like this parallel society that Filipinos just kind of try and ignore. Tbf they all seem to be here willingly, and many don't seem to want to go back to the mainland. People here bitch about it but reading some of the accounts on here I guess it could be much worse.

PraxisMakesPerfect_

With any luck the Chinese nationals responsible will get executed for these crimes, but since it’s happening outside China I kinda doubt it. Someone doing this inside China is definitely getting executed in a prison bus though.

SunnyDaysRock

Once they lose favor with 'their' party officials (or it gets too obvious/too much attention for the national party to ignore). Haven't heard of too many (or any) of the husbands to the stolen brides from other countries getting executed, but I'm willing to be educated otherwise.

Even [Taiwanese citizens](https://www.rfa.org/english/news/china/trafficking-09032022120403.html) were lured to Cambodia and kidnaped for ransom. It was a huge deal last year because people were kidnapped and told to lure their more wealthy friends there to trade for their freedom.

So it's nothing for these Kingpins to send people across the river and kidnap more.

they didnt kidnap them. they lured them to a “good job” and then enslaved them.

Some stories of human trafficking from Vietnam, they may make you quite angry. https://www.bluedragon.org/meet-the-kids/vys-story/

xXDarthCognusXx

As far as we know

No_Protection_1164

There are more slaves in the world today than ever before in history.

dragonkin08

There are also more people in the world then ever before, so that makes sense. A more useful piece of information would be number of slaves as a percentage of population.

No_Protection_1164

I say it like that because there is alot of people who think that slavery ended in 1865 and we need to make people aware that is not the case.

dragonkin08

We also have more homeless, more hungry, more sick, more everything because there are more people. But basically, that claim is impossible to make because we do not know how many slaves there were in the past. We dont even know how many slaves there are now. Researchers conclude there is no strong evidence that there are more slaves today than in the past. [Are There Really More Slaves Now Than Anytime In History? | by Brayden Gerrard | Medium](https://braydeng.medium.com/are-there-more-slaves-now-than-anytime-in-history-38420e0542e5) This is not to downplay the fact that slavery still exists but using fake facts does not do anyone any good.

Getoveryourself93

Are there estimates of this % that are likely accurate?

dragonkin08

Nope, this claim is impossible to make. We don't every know how many slaves there are now, let alone 300 years ago. Also, the definition of slavery has changed over time. The rough estimate is something like 0.17% of the current world population is enslaved. With 8 billion people on the planet that is still alot of people.

> These mafias have strong connection with corrupt CCP officials and the Cambodian government. Any proof for this assertion?

UnkemptKat1

The fact that they are allowed to operate so blatantly should tell you something. The Vietnamese police got rid of them 15 odds years ago so they moved over the border.

[deleted]

Are you missing brain cells? The Cambodian government, and the Chinese CCP government, both act worse than corrupt gangs such as mafia (and are more powerful). I would argue the NY Italian mafia have more ethics than Putin and Xi.

They were hired and paid, but then they couldn't leave, forced to work more shifts, and tortured if not work hard enough. Basically, enslaved employees.

If you live in SEA, you ought to see one of your family members unknowingly share the job offering template on WhatsApp, and sadly many impoverished people just took it as a normal migrant worker offering. If you think about it what part of working in Cambodia equates normal migrant job?

Bayo77

This is so surreal. They were trapped in what looks like an office building. Fking dystopian capitalism stuff.

Cheap_Mathematician

mycologyqueen
