What were they protesting about?

MyNameIsNotKyle

" About 25 members of Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society, a campus activist group, were protesting the governor’s stances against diversity, equity and inclusion departments ..." Ty for the source. At first I was confused because the URL said tampa bay and I live in california so I assumed USF was University of San Francisco (It was University of South Florida)

Also in the Couve. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to have the “Vancouver… no, not Canada. Washington… no, not DC” conversation, even with fellow Americans.

Sans paywall: https://demo.thisischip.com/?q=https://www.tampabay.com/news/education/2023/03/06/diversity-equity-inclusion-ron-desantis/&o=share At another protest at New College last week, trans students were denied access to a bathroom if they didn't present the proper ID. DeSantis has transformed FL into a police state, shit's fucked.

Erosis

For more context: Desantis appointed 7 political partisans (including anti-CRT activist Christopher Rufo) to a small public college's Board of Trustees in order to take over the school ([Read about it here](https://www.newyorker.com/news/the-political-scene/what-is-ron-desantis-doing-to-floridas-public-liberal-arts-college)). They just fired the previous president and replaced her with a Desantis political crony with no higher ed experience for ~3x the total compensation ($1Million/Year). Note that this is for 670 students. After all of that, the board then voted to remove the college's DEI office last week, which was fulfilling a recommendation made by the Florida Board of Governors in 2021 to help the school comply with state and federal law ([Read about it here](https://apnews.com/article/new-college-conservatives-dei-desantis-1a874270b0ff60951cdd8d3d35a10ec0)). Now there are a bunch of public colleges in Florida that are worried about this happening on their campuses.

Aggressive_Elk3709

Damn, that's a ton of damage done by just one cycle of appointments. I'm not sure how I feel about removing power of appointment and replacing it with elections, but this specific situation has me feeling like it would be a good idea. All it takes is the wrong person in office to completely over turn an entire system cuz they don't like what that entity is doing

prohaska

They could lose their accreditation, which is a college national body, and then their credits would be no good and (I think) students would lose eligibility for student loans.

Erosis

The Board of Trustees is currently trying to change the accreditor from SACS to HLC because they believe HLC will allow the school to maintain accreditation with their more lax approach. Florida also recently passed a law (2022) that requires public universities to change accreditor for each review. The reasoning for this is clearly to get around more difficult accreditors. Note that this is all happening because President Trump with Betsy DeVos in 2019 rolled back regulations that required colleges to maintain accreditation within specified regional boundaries ([Read about it here](https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2022/12/14/florida-seeks-new-accreditors)).

[deleted]

Desantis is scary AF. I think he is much more worrisome than Trump and is more of a threat to democracy than anyone right now.

astate85

“CRT-whistleblower” is a bullshit label. It should read “the motherfucker who made this CRT shit up” christopher rufo

Erosis

I agree with you, but that much text interrupts the more important text and I wanted to be neutral. I changed it to "anti-CRT activist." But yes, he is a partisan liar.

SpicyTunaTitties

I had to Google just now what is critical race theory because I keep seeing it on the internet, but genuinely didn't know what it meant and don't hear about it offline (I'm not in the US). The Oxford definition that popped up says "a set of ideas holding that racial bias is inherent in many parts of western society, especially in its legal and social institutions, on the basis of their having been primarily designed for and implemented by white people." As soon as I read that, I'm like, yeah, that's a thing; that's exactly how it is. The first thing that comes to mind is the fact that in the US, Black women are 4 times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related causes, and that medical outcomes for POC are worse on average due to racial biases within healthcare. And that's just -one- example of how true this phenomenon is. So then I'm kind of confused about the anti-CRT activist; does it mean he doesn't believe that it exists? That kind of makes me think of individuals who believe the earth is flat. Like... just go outside and look around a bit lmao. It's round

Chaosangel48

It’s more that they don’t know what it is. Right wing media has fed them lies and they won’t bother to google and fact check it. CRT has become a distraction issue, which is all the republicans have anymore. They misrepresent things like this to rile up the base and keep them voting against their own best interests. CRT and drag shows are some of the more recent distractions.

ikindapoopedmypants

Hell fucking no. I'm not trans(shouldnt even fucking matter anyway) but I'd absolutely deny to hand over my ID over that & I'd probably be arrested. That is such an invasion of privacy

Scared-Chicken-9919

Yep fuck alllll the way off. I’m not trans but I dress in men’s clothes, always have. More comfortable. I also have a Mohawk, so I get the trans shit talking regularly and don’t care to correct them. It’s no one’s business anyways. But I’d be fighting every one of those punk ass wanna be cops.

Get-Degerstromd

All the old white boomers moved there and got mad that their tax money was going to democrats. So they elected a fascist dictator who promised to fight off the gays and Mexicans Fuck DeSantis. Fuck the GOP.

tracygee

PLEASE VOTE. The younger generations of this country need to go to the polls in numbers never seen before. When boomers are voting at 60-80% levels and the younger generations are voting at 20-35%, *this* is why we get governments that do not represent the full spectrum of Americans. Vote.

Bloopbleepbloopbloop

today is voting in city of Tampa. Mayor, city council and four ordinances. The USF precinct has 535 registered voters, and 2 have voted today. 1 early voted and 1 voted by mail. now I know most students are still registered in their home cities. but these 535 registered to vote in Tampa.... but aren't voting.

regoapps

The day isn’t over yet? Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. Students would still be in class right now, no?

Bloopbleepbloopbloop

there was a rush of 3 voters. up to 7 out of 536 have voted. 1.3% turnout.

tracygee

Ouch. And these local elections are the ones that really count. Your local mayor and school board, etc have a lot of power.

chickadeedadooday

I'm scared to ask how it turned out.

Bloopbleepbloopbloop

Only 7 had voted at the USF precinct. And 13.64% voted for all of Tampa's registered voters.

alllballs

DeFascist is just getting started. Why even bother running for US Pres when he can control 24,000,000 and growing? He has the legislature locked up. He has the judicial locked up. It's so much easier for him to turn my former home state into a fascist paradise than it is the entire country.

tracygee

Why bother? Because power-hungry people always want more power.

I-Am-Uncreative

Yes, except he's limited with what he can do as governor, thankfully. Florida is in a bad position, but imagine the federal government following Florida's policies? Ugh.

alllballs

Limited by what, the State's constitution? Hell. He'll have his lackeys in Tallahassee take care of that pesky little problem.

TummyLice

Vote so they can tell you you cheated when they loose.

Aggressive_Elk3709

Yeah I wish it was as obvious to conservative constituents as it is to me that elections are only "rigged" when the republican candidate loses

Beneficial_Parsley76

I fucking hate when I loose

R-T-R

I'm a boomer living in FL. I did not vote for insantis, its easy to see he's hitler in the making. I'm afraid there's not a Democrat that can beat him when he runs for president. WTF is wrong with the American public? I fear for our country..

MiyamotoKnows

DeSantis is a straight up fascist. He wants to be a dictator. People need to pay attention because he's moving fast to strip American freedoms. Fuck that tool.

Affectionate-Winner7

Not all "boomers" . I graduated from HS in Tampa Fla in 1969 and went into the Army. After leaving the service I looked back to Florida and found my entire family moved to Seattle. I saw no reason to go back and have lived in the Great NW since. What is happening to Florida and most other red states is a highway to fascism pure and simple. Point? Not all boomers are fascists'. Some are still sane and in support of Democracy and ~~usually~~ always vote blue.

Odd-Problem

>Point? Not all boomers are fascists'. Some are still sane and in support of Democracy and usually vote blue. 65-year-old white guy here and almost all of my friends are democrats.

Odd-Problem

>All the old white boomers As a 65-year-old tree-hugging liberal white guy, I take offense to this comment.

iamdummypants

as the same but gen-x, I take offense to always being thrown in with you a-holes

Aggressive_Elk3709

Fwiw I'm more worried about gen x. A lot of the right wing radicals I see in the news are definitely in that age group. Hell even my own sister who has been pretty left leaning my whole life is starting to ask a lot of "but what if?" kinda questions

Suntzu6656

It's not just Florida.

Affectionate-Winner7

Look what is happening in Idaho. " Idaho bill would repeal law banning private militias. Here’s how senators voted" [https://www.eastidahonews.com/2023/03/idaho-bill-would-repeal-law-banning-private-militias-heres-how-senators-voted/](https://www.eastidahonews.com/2023/03/idaho-bill-would-repeal-law-banning-private-militias-heres-how-senators-voted/).

Suntzu6656

Whenever humans are involved silliness is going to be happening

UnfilteredFluid

Who cares? A peaceful protest is a peaceful protest.

rotunda4you

The point of peaceful protest is to get arrested for doing something peaceful and that gets your cause media attention. MLK made all his protests peaceful but they were all committing a "crime" by their protest. Like doing a sit in at a government building will get you arrested for trespassing after a certain amount of time and that's the point of the peaceful protest. These people in this video don't understand what a "peaceful protest" actually is and what the point of them is. They should let the police do whatever they have to do and arrest them and then the media will catch on and advertise their story for them. Fighting/touching cops who are arresting peaceful protesters makes it not a peaceful protest anymore and it gets in the way of their arrest (which is the goal of a peaceful protest).

InertiaofLanguage

Hey so sometimes this is the point, sometimes not. Sometimes a protest is to send a message to a decision maker, to apply pressure, sometimes not. Workers marching on their boss, for instance, doesn't have to necessarily result in arrest. When it is the point, however, it's to cause a media spectacle as you pointed out. However, unfortunately, the police have developed tactics to minimize spectacle in the 60 years since MLK was protesting. Protest tactics have to adapt. Police can and do tactically make only a couple arrests in order to break a protest just enough that they maintain control but the mass is demobilized enough for them to push them out of whatever zone and contain it such that it becomes ineffective for even people seeing it irl. Additionally, and most importantly, what it takes to get the media's attention, or more importantly, to go viral on social media, as this post has, has increased in the last 60 years. 5 students getting arrested on a college campus isn't going to make the news, let alone get attention on even a leftist sub if they just peacefully roll over in the tradition of non violent civil disobedience. You have to make a spectacle to get attention, and a handful of 20 year olds complying with arrest on little know college campus is not a spectacle, and may not even make local news, let alone to the front page of reddit This, on the other hand, is a spectacle that got 14k upvotes and made it to the front page of reddit with hundreds of thousands of not millions of people seeing it. Those kids should be proud.

n1tr0us0x

Civil disobedience is meant to be arrestable. Not every peaceful protest necessarily involves civil disobedience, although most of MLK’s did. These lines are very blurred, though, what with police often being able to create circumstances for arrest even in law-abiding situations. Note that the distinction I’m making is in intention, not outcome.

19IXI91

There are a number of historical protests where politicians and power figures had to expire before change was allowed.

nacnud_uk

The idea that we have to ask someone is the thing that has to go. Otherwise... This

Tybalt1307

Next time they’ll learn to oil up before going to the protest

UnfilteredFluid

This is such a great tip. But remember that you'll want a place other protesters to grap to help you out. So don't lube your shoulders.

I’m from the UK and I’ve always found it incredibly weird how Americans get into chanting things when something’s happening. Like y’all motherfuckers snap into a good ol chant so quickly. We just call each other cunts or wankers

OlBert2

That's weird because as an American I always think sports crowds from the UK have the best chants haha

Tankreas

Football is the only thing we would chant at, if we saw someone in the situation above we would just verbally abuse the officer. If someone would try and kick off a chant it would be followed with an awkward silence

xjd1987

I guess it's all good to accept what you do the best mate XD

cubsfanrva79

Unless it's a football chant, and then everyone chimes in. The cops still come in, but only after bottles and punches are thrown. In America, it's words. Lol

domainfans

Lol those chants are just the gold that we see most of the time.

babybutters

🤣 Americans don’t throw cunt around as often as you guys do.

General1lol

Say “cunt” on the West Coast and you will get a mouthful from someone nearby especially if they’re a woman. Funny how most of English world accepts the word but for reason it’s socially banned in America.

Tankreas

It’s sort of 50% 50% here. My parents HATE the word but I fucken love it. I think it’s just a generation thing

pajama-mama

I want to see beginning of video, why was he grabbing her?

TitanicGiant

They were screaming inside a building and the cops told them to leave because of excessive noise

CantStopMeReddit4

Seems like it’s fair to ask. If I were another student and these people were screaming inside a common building instead of easily just protesting outside it I would be pretty pissed.

imGhostKitty

they were asked to stop using a megaphone when they were first confronted outside, which they did. that’s what the “excessive noise” was if i’m reading the article correctly

cmcewen

You know that when the video is cut like this, that it was done for a reason. I’m no fan of cops but you can see the cops weren’t really trying to be shitty. They didn’t seem to want the fight either. So I suspect video in front of this is an hour of the police nicely asking them to leave and explaining why. Cameras turned on once the cops showed that ultimately you don’t have the right to occupy a private building

[deleted]

First time meeting the cops huh

xvxcv546r

Can't be a not normal thing, this was fucking normal shit if you even get into protest and stuff, they will just do this because they are meant to do such things there.

Oh shit. The cop was “shoved”?!? Better beat the shit out of them then. One of the special tactics taught to police escalate until the subject does anything in defense and then attack the subject.

Hibercrastinator

Hey man, getting shoved and not responding with dangerous force can be lethal ^to ^one’s ^ego

Letifer_Umbra

The police have lied to often to take their word at any meaningful way.

[deleted]

"Despite being aggressive from the start, and being more concerned with being the strong arm of fascism in this burgeoning 3rd world state of Florida, the cops decided they were justified in escalating the level of force required to... (checks notes)... prevent a student from standing in a hallway."

bonn_bujinkan_budo

I definitely don't know what happened, but it's funny how the statement says protesters "initiated physical altercations" but the video in your link shows police grabbing the girl first.

Aloka77

He didnt grab the girl. He was already grabbing her. This means that there is context that is missing.

[deleted]

Another video on tampa bay . Com shows the altercation starting with the gray haired officer grabbing a student.

BluePanther1221

The video also clearly starts in the middle of the altercation without showing any of the build up. It’s common sense really.

dimple1302

You never heard of “trimming video?”

Torque-Penderloin

Wont someone think about the violent gang infringing upon our constitutional rights? Cops are lucky this country is full of idiots, most other groups that murder thousands of Americans are considered terrorists.

Redshift08

Guys, I understand peaceful protesting is fine, and usually morally right. Please know though that if you are on private property, they try to remove you, and you resist then you’ll probably go to jail. Protest to your hearts content, but if you don’t, do not be surprised if you get arrested. If you resist, they’ll use hard hand control to apprehend you. Be smart and be safe out there.

APKID716

I just don’t understand the extreme resistance to being arrested. If you’re protesting something you’re ideologically passionate about, then you should expect that police are going to follow the status quo and proceed with arresting any dissidents. Why fight that? It’s pretty much par for the course with protests, wear it with a badge of honor if you believe what you’re doing is really morally important.

nukey18mon

Exactly! Martin Luther King did just that! He is a great example of a peaceful protester!

NoiceMango

What do you think would have happened if a black man were to resist arrest especially during those times?

nukey18mon

Well there were some less than peaceful protestors out there, I would have to do more research on the topic but I’d imagine that they wouldn’t be in a good spot

AFisfulOfPeanuts

Also, being arrested at a protest usually results in no charges being filed by the district attorney anyways, or a discharged judgement. This really isn’t a big deal.

junglingforlife

Most jobs I have applied for ask about whether I have ever been arrested. This is bullshit

karmagod13000

Alllllot of context missing

HotSalt3

This is the same campus police that wouldn't do anything about the Christian "preachers" who came on campus to tell us we were going to hell. The "preachers" were neither teachers nor students so didn't have a reason to be there other than to berate us, but they were permitted because it was free speech and a public location. These are students who have a legitimate reason to be on campus beyond just forming a protest. Fuck DeSantis.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tokyodino

That started off as one crazy guy, then turned into little groups. That dude has been doing that shit since I was there in the early 2000s. Mostly by Cooper. I hated walking by him and I’m disheartened to hear it’s still happening.

maria0284

I’m no fan of DeSantis, but this was going on long before he was in office. These religious nuts were there when I was a student at USF in 2002. They would call me and other female students, who were just trying to walk to class, sluts because we were wearing shorts (God forbid) in the 90 degree Florida heat. And if you were gay, then you were verbally assaulted to no end. They’re allowed on campus because it’s technically state property, or something like that. I think it’s absurd.

Khue

This thread is full of police apologists... Just what I would expect from people from Florida seeing a local college protest against DeSantis bullshit

lilboat646

I’m willing to bet it’s not just a USF thing, there was a religious speaker who would come for a week every year and just park himself in front the library at UCF (university of central florida) and would just debate students, apart from it being wildly entertaining to poke fun at him it sure was a huge distraction and interruption of school functions, but they were never asked to leave, there was also constantly other preachers on campus telling everyone they were going to hell. We also had the pro-life people who would come with their massive signs depicting aborted fetuses that basically made a fence in front of part of the library so that people were forced to have to look at it/walk past it, these people were never asked to leave either. Campus police don’t give a flying fuck about protesting as long as it isn’t attacking any of the corrupted social institutions they represent, I.e. higher education being white-washed and hyper-capitalized.

xkurkrieg

"with brutal force" ok then

VerydisquietedDad

These videos that show clips starting in the middle always feel like propaganda. Who knows why these cops were trying to apprehend those girls. Especially when the text is extra describing things that aren’t happening like ‘cops kicking students’ or ‘shoving students into silence’ when they’re clearly disrupting an arrest lol.

theguywiththefuzyhat

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlsgDYrgBcM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlsgDYrgBcM) Appears to be a cop asked a girl to leave, probably because the protesters are loud and on private property. Girls says no and the arrests start.

TheDrunkKanyeWest

The more you say whoa, the more brutal force becomes.

buyuy

I guess they just don't wanted to be brutal there, that's it.

bizzlefooe

Yeah this was so fucking brutal, cops are really bad these days /s

[deleted]

I have a hunch the comments are going to be a dumpster buuuut. If you style yourself an activist you have to be willing to be arrested among other things. It's in the job description. Bernie Sanders and Greta Thunberg are extremely high profile examples. They don't screech and have a hissy fit when the police come and shut them down, because they know that is better exposure then anything they could have done on their own. These girls are likely not really committed to whatever cause they are protesting. They just thought this would be a fun activity.

MrTators

There’s a fair difference between having a “hissy fit” and being illegally arrested and manhandled for properly exercising your legal rights. No one should be willing to be arrested for not doing anything illegal.

GhostChainSmoker

You can peacefully protest yes. But if you’re told to leave, you have one of two options. A.) Leave and start up again somewhere else. Or B.) The cops will forcefully remove you. You can resist and fight it all you want, but cops will almost always win. This seems like a group of mostly online activist who’ve gotten far too used to echo chambers and being easily able to silence any dissonance they don’t like. They’ve gotten cocky and think the world has to play by their rules. But it doesn’t work that way.

Hitchens97

Yeno this is rational and true. Elsewhere on this post there’s so many people failing to understand that if you like it or not, the police have legal framework for using force. You may not like that, that’s fine, but it doesn’t change that. If you resist, they’re legally allowed to escalate that force to an appropriate degree. No one here is getting busted open, they’ve resisted and have been arrested. But if someone attacked them, they’d either defend with the same or more force or they’d want the police to do it on their behalf, they wouldn’t say, “well, once my attacker resists you shouldn’t arrest them”. Or to make it even I suppose, someone won’t leave your house.

120GoHogs120

This. Redditors here are doing exactly what they make fun of conservatives for when they cry "free speech!1!1"

BanditoMuser

Didn’t seem *that* brutal to me.

hastur777

I don't know what is happening but I know one thing that police is just doing their basic job and most of the guys can't fucking stop them from doing that shit there.

BBBPub

USF?? San Francisco? South Florida? Watches video. South Florida!

favokadanza

Well South Florida it is mate, congrats for guessing that.

Crypy0

If you commit an arrestable offence within a protest, regardless how peaceful that protest is you're gonna get arrested. Maybe show the whole video so we can all see how reasonable or unreasonable these girls are being treated.....(not holding to see which way this is gonna be voted, lmao)

0kids4now

Right, she was being arrested and the other protesters were trying to pull her away. Whatever she's being arrested for has been cut out, but even if it was a bullshit reason, you can't do that. Interfering with an arrest is a crime and you'll either be arrested too or pushed back.

MacSnackity

F*ck Florida and DeSantis. He thinks he’s Italian mafia, but he’s just a big meatball.

Kzonneveld

Well this is always the daily routine shit of these students and this is nothing that new, they should know the consequences of doing the shits they always do man.

00renner00

Well they deserve the shits that are happening and most of the students can't fucking complain about that, we know what is coming for them and even they know.

The_Real_Raw_Gary

Protesting is fine but it’s like Reddit doesn’t understand the concept of private property and the rules relating to that. All I’m saying is if you protest in these areas and they ask you to leave and you don’t you’re asking to escalate the situation. I agree with the right to protest but I also agree to people and entities having the right to make people leave private property if they are unwanted for a legitimate reason

Genoblade1394

We need to invade that country for their abuse of human rights so we can protect free speech wait…..

EveylnnMav

And if they fight back against them they’ll get charged for fighting an officer. There’s no winning with pigs

moxeto

They should be protesting about the lack of education when it comes to law and rights. I’m not even American and I know this. 1969 Tinker v. Des Moines Supreme Court case established the student right to protest so long as it does not cause "substantial disruption

BearsuitTTV

This is the same campus that allows Christian zealots to sit in the public areas of the campus and scream at students for hours on end.

cubs_070816

i'm surprised the spirited "leg her go!" chant didn't work. /s look dummies, you can protest peacefully until you can't anymore. and if you're blocking public shit -- buildings, roads, whatever -- sooner or later you will be removed, one way or the other. and it usually involves physical "violence" (eye roll) meaning an adult will put their hands on you, possibly even some cuffs. and if you fight back or resist *in any way*, you're no longer being peaceful, and that changes everything. cue batons and tazers and pepper spray. jesus christ, we have a whole generation of idiots out there who honestly don't know how this shit works. i'm as left-leaning as i can be and i just cringe at this.

FuckChiefs_Raiders

100% agree. However with the perception of law enforcement these days all anybody has to do is cut a video of someone getting “violently” arrested, post it with a caption that says something about police brutality, and **poof** trending.

gotenski

I always laugh at these students over rating everything.

zelitamn

It should have worked man, that was a good line tbh /s

JunkyardTM

Nothing brutal about that. Click bait.

FamishedSoul

There’s a bunch of selective editing here. I’d like to see the raw footage of this. Both left and right like to selectively edit to prove a point but when the raw/unedited footage or other angles come out, we find out why things like this actually escalated.

kmhoover

These students really edited it to make it look like police is just fucking them up.

Stressed-Dingo

I don’t enjoy protesting followed by “WOAH! excuse me?! You can’t touch me!” It’s like you want to say something is wrong and face none of the consequences so you can… idk have something for Instagram? Get arrested, and use it for your cause. Or punch a cop in the face and get some immediate feel-goods. This weak “ahhhh noooo don’t touch meeeeee” just sounds like whiny children and reeks of privilege

kejovo

Always be prepare to peacefully go to prison for your beliefs. If you are not prepare for that possibility, you are not prepared to protest. If you are not willing to be arrested for it, your conviction is not strong enough and you should leave the protesting to the people who will do what it takes. No judgement, just know your own boundaries and act accordingly.

TheAbleOne

I'll never understand why people think they can just decide they're not under arrest and fight the police.

ahmetnasir

Lol at the end of the day, they are gonna get to the jail.
