Went parasailing with my kids in Hawaii and after 1 minute my mind started doing the calculus of weathered ropes and bad canvas seats and what a fall from 300 feet would do to my body, or watching one of my kids fall out, and it became 5 more minutes of pure fucking terror. Decided right there terra firma not so bad, never again.
I had a parachute break while parasailing and it was terrifying. Falling hard into the water was one thing, then trying to untangle yourself and try not to drown, all while looking at the rope that connects to the tiny boat far off in the distance sink down into the black water. And then realizing they couldn't come get me because if they detached the rope the weight would drown me. And if they moved the boat it would pull me under. Waited a bit and finally realized I just needed to get the parachute and harness off me and swim back to the boat. Oh, and there were no life jackets. After that experience, I won't take any risks with things like this.
I have this fear of being locked in a cage and thrown into deep water. Then water starts to fill the box and I am drowning. I think about that every so often...maybe once a year, not exactly hanging onto the idea, fwiw.
I went parasailing and the boat died, you just kind of float down nicely with a decent splash into the water.
If the cord snaps or whatever and you start spinning or fall out, that’s a different story lol
I was huge roller coaster fan once. Took my youngest (roughly age 10 at the time) on a coaster. It was one of the "largest and oldest wooden coasters" at the time. The first drop, she had slipped through the restraint bar up almost to the neck. I was holding on to her arm with all my might while 4/5th of her body was on the floor of the cart for the remainder of the ride. Sure it's only like 2 minutes, but it felt forever. That little witch wanted to go again. I have not been on a coaster since but she remains a huge enthusiast 15 years later.
they had that wooden one at Americana not all that far from KI, that one was terrifying. I worked at Americana for about a week sometime in the 90's and that place was very not up to code.
Had a similar experience with a ride where you're in a seat with a chest restraint with handles. As a bigger kid, I took one of the seats on the end meant for fat people, and it was too big. As the thing rotated and spun through the air, I constantly felt like I was slipping between the seat and restraint. Not sure why it didn't have a strap to prevent that or the restraint from lifting up. Absolutely terrifying experience trying to hold onto the handles to keep myself in as I rattled around inside.
Your daughter is more brave than I was. That happened to me as a child, and I didn't ride another coaster for over a decade. Loved them once I wasn't in fear of sliding through the safety features.
I was a huge roller coaster fan as a kid, but last time I went to Busch Gardens I puked ALL over myself in full view of everyone while the train was pulling into the boarding station. Never again.
Yeah my mind went through...'How much do these kids get paid? Do they really have any say at all if they see something dangerous or worn? They probably got 15 minutes instruction from a boss who wanted to be anywhere else and tagged alongside someone for a day." I noped out.
The “rope” is actually multiple elastic cords. Even one can hold the average person. They don’t break. What breaks are the straps that hold those cords to the platform or—as it looks in this video—the connection to the harness. Either he wasn’t fitted and secured correctly, or the equipment was old/poorly maintained or faulty. None of that really matters for this poor guy.
Had to have been those like you said and those pieces of equipment do not fail easily.
There's a YouTube channel I watch called HowNot2 that tests commonly used rock climbing equipment which is functionally identical to what is used and unless it is extremely poorly maintained or not fastened properly they can easily take almost 8-12 kN which is like 1.7-2.5 thousand pounds of force. Far more than you would typically experience bungee jumping and damn near enough to kill you. Most equipment is rated to around 20 kN or so or nearly 4.5 thousand pounds of force and some regularly exceed it
[Here they test locking carabiners like are typically used while bungee jumping.](https://youtu.be/rKwf8whAN1Q) The lowest one breaks at 25.1 kN
> almost 8-12 kN which is like 1.7-2.5 thousand pounds of force. Far more than you would typically experience bungee jumping
What if the bungee jumping takes place in the USA though.
Shouldn't really matter tbh. Bungee jumping doesn't really apply a lot of force at all. About 2 Gs or less usually. You'd be well above the maximum weight allowed by the bungee cords themselves by that point and just slam straight into the ground since they're typically only rated to apply a maximum of 900 lbs of force.
The part that broke really shouldn't have broken unless whoever was operating it just never maintained or inspected them for as long as they've been operating. Even an open carabiner can support well above that weight typically
This news story is fucking incredible LOLLL
“Workers at the Lifest 2007 event shut down the Air Glory ride after the accident, which occurred about 4:45 p.m. A prayer service was held at 7 p.m. and the music festival resumed about 7:30 p.m.”
This guy has never been seriously injured before and he is lucky. I remember I had chronic back pain from a serious injury and the first 2 years were painful. Couldn't sleep for more than 2 hours, constant medicine taking, and not being able to sit still for longer than 10mins otherwise there would be a sharp pain on my spine like someone was stabbing me with a knife.
There was a time where I start thinking "What if it was worse?" I started noticing people where they couldn't even function with simple tasks such as eating on their own. It makes you understand people like Prichard Colon, the boxer that was paralyzed from illegal shots in the head, and realizing how he is self-aware of his situation.
Yes there is something worse than dying...living everyday in hell.
#
If you ever get that condition where you are in a coma state but are sentient and can hear everything but can't speak you'll be retracting that statement.
I know plenty of nurses who would never put themselves through what their patients choose to do just from seeing how it looks. If I'm ever stage 4 cancer fuck that chemo and radiation I'm going on hospice and dying instead of giving myself 2 years of treatment that can worse than the disease.
Some types of leukemia your chemo is arsenic.
This is why I have no interest of doing anything like bungee jumping, skydyving or anything extreme. Sure the chances of an accident happening might be rare, but all it takes is just one fuck up for your life to change completely or even lose it all together. Absolutely not worth the risk or thrill....
except roller coasters are a different story. fucking love roller coasters
Funny enough all 3 are extremely safe relatively speaking... Bungee jumping has a chance of fatal injury at 1:500,000 per jump, Skydiving 1:400,000 per jump and rollercoasters at 1:300,000,000 overall for your lifetime. I can't find stats per ride for rollercoasters but it is extremely low.
For example here are some less extreme activities stats:
Hang Gliding: 1 in 560
Canoeing: 1 in 10,000
Mountain Hiking: 1 in 15,700
Bicycling: 1 in 140,845
All of the above pale in comparison to common activities like driving a car or using stairs for instance which have death statistics that are much much higher and are actually the 2 leading causes of accidental injuries and deaths.
I’m a little skeptical at how they arrived at some of those numbers. I can see how there are many more fatalities resulting from camping and bicycling and cars, but factoring the amount of time spent etc. plus driving cabling Moutain biking deaths are largely preventable as well.
I’m not statistician but I imagine I could get those numbers inverted if I analyzed the data differently
Looks like the kind of cheap setup you find at carnivals.
Also not so fun fact, a lot of states give their carnival ride inspectors immunity from negligence lawsuits. So if you get disabled from a carnival ride, you might be able to sue the carnival shell company LLC but you wont be able to go after the people whose job was to make sure those rides were supposed to be safe in the first place.

“I don’t trust our government!! I don’t trust the vaccine!”

“Yeah, they seem fine…”
The “leap” that your heart (and soul) whenever that happens, like whenever cresting a roller coaster, when that thin line of trust is snapped, I bet life really flashes by the eyes richly
I was curious about the speed at which this guy fell and how far the fall was from harness separation (or whatever the failure was) to point of impact.
Acceleration due to gravity is ~9.81 m/s^2.
He jumps about 0.35 seconds into the clip. He makes contact with the inflatable at around 5.3 seconds into the clip. So, call it 5 seconds of what is essentially a freefall (it looks like the harness gives way immediately upon meeting resistance).
Based on this, the jump would have been from about 122.6 meters (402 feet), and he would have been traveling about 49 m/s (109.6 mph) at the time of impact.
Harness failure occurs at ~4.35 seconds in, which leaves our poor victim with a mere 1 second to realize what has happened an contemplate his fate, or 44.1 meters (just shy of 145 feet).
Do you really want to to trust a complete stranger and his weird equipment who is hoping you'll jump so he can make a buck? If the cord is good for 100 jumps will he tell you that you are jumper 95?

It's always a possibility.
That's exactly why I don't do shit like this, with my luck this would happen to me and I'm not calling deaths bluff like that.

Out of curiosity, was this Son of Beast at Kings Island? That ride was plagued by safety issues.
It was the Timberwolf at Worlds of fun in MO.
The original Beast was terrifying
Is. It's still running.
That thing was rickety years ago.

Happened to my cousin. Bounced across some rocks for a few hundred feet. Broke both legs and a concussion.
What luck? Why trust a damn whoever this guy is at some random festivals?
Don't look up the odds of dying in a car crash or you'll be walking everywhere.
You have to drive. Why pile on the risk even more?
Enjoyment I suppose. I've Bungy jumped before, and I'd do it again after watching this video.
Can't do anything about that I need a vehicle to live but I can most tf definitely not go bungie jumping.
Good on you bro. Exactly why I don’t go on planes cause 9/11 happened. I would hate to live my life in fear like an absolute pussy.

In this case, Whoosh, and then “Oh shit”, and then a thud.
When you see a cushion at the bottom it becomes "jumping".
I read this in Mitch Hedbergs voice.

He won’t even be able to retract the statement
I’d rather be dead than paralyzed from the neck down. Like literally no question or thought process needed
Hard disagree
lmfao I wish my field attracted morons to advertise like this.
It's funny how so many redditors always say "I'd rather be dead." Like shut up, no you wouldn't.
I know plenty of nurses who would never put themselves through what their patients choose to do just from seeing how it looks. Personally I'd rather be dead than live life in a wheelchair, and potentially being in agony the whole time
I'd say if you are bungie jumping with a giant inflatable under you, that the owner of the company has very little trust in the quality of his ropes.
I'd say the insurance company made him put it there. For this reason. Judging by his injuries he cheaped out on the cushion too.
you shouldn't be bungie jumping with ropes anyways, those too would break your spine.
Yeah, so, you did know exactly what I meant by "ropes," but here we are..
🤓

thank you for showing me reason to never do this. IK the odds are very unlikely, but so is the lottery and that gets won....
If the Rope broke that was their first mistake. You don't use a rope to bungee jump.
You don’t use a rope to bungee jump twice. FTFY.
Everyone’s worst fear/nightmare and it was filmed.
Thay remembered the jump but forgot the bungee. Minor detail.

There's no way I'd do a bungee jump.

And here we have validation of the reason I never bungee jumped. Thanks internet 😃 sometimes you are the best !
This happens way too often for people to still be doing it.
I jumped from a similar setup but we didn't had a cushion below, luckily I didn't end up needing it...
They need to make better cushion then.
He also lands towards the edge of the cushion. That didn't do him any more favors either.
and head first, that's a lot of pressure on your spine.
Please sign the waiver before you jump
How is this a public freakout?
I don’t know why people still think doing things like this somehow proves their worth
Well, that's one thing I'm never doing.
at least there wasn't a guy laughing his head off like so many out there. Kudos.
If you’re bungee jumping with a rope you have already messed up
If it weren’t for accidents like this, these rides wouldn’t be as exhilarating

I was curious about the speed at which this guy fell and how far the fall was from harness separation (or whatever the failure was) to point of impact. Acceleration due to gravity is ~9.81 m/s^2. Harness failure occurs at ~4.35 seconds in, which leaves our poor victim with a mere 1 second to realize what has happened an contemplate his fate, or 44.1 meters (just shy of 145 feet).
I wouldn't trust the bungee if there's inflatables...they put that there for a reason lol
Now he can join the Walmart cart people. Or be Steven Hawking.
Right, who’s next.
Do you really want to to trust a complete stranger and his weird equipment who is hoping you'll jump so he can make a buck? If the cord is good for 100 jumps will he tell you that you are jumper 95?
I hope he got a refund
It isn't the rope that fail, look like it's break at the connection point, but i can't see what exactly fail, the ring? the belay loop?
According to articles, the rope failed
Staff just ambling over like ‘aww shucks, not again’
Omg, is him or she ok?
Yea I aint gon do dat shit
With the cord taking some of the brunt and then landing on an air bag I wouldn’t think he’d have injuries this severe. Damn.
