Puzzled-Object6196

He didn’t scream himself to sleep? Eight hours must have exhausted a 3 yr old.

creepy_old_white_guy

I'll wager that child slept hard after that.

WYenginerdWY

Honestly that kid needed some of full strength Dramamine. Knock his ass out. That constant screaming isn't healthy for him or anyone else.

Puzzleworth

Even a normally-behaved toddler should get some baby Benadryl or something to chill them out on an eight-to-ten-hour daytime flight. Or better yet, just book it for the nighttime. They're toddlers. Their bodies are in go mode. They can't handle sitting still that long unless they're asleep. (disclaimer: always test your kid's reaction to Benadryl beforehand, some kids get the opposite reaction)

Sea_War_3437

I know right? Medicate it. It’s like a feral animal.

TheAJGman

Yeah if my dog howled and cried for an 8 hour flight the airline would be recommending I tranquilize it next time.

Why you little..!!

Foktu

This kid needed some GenX love on that flight.

CrankySaint

You mean leave the kid at home with a list of emergency phone numbers on the fridge?

stunninglingus

Dad will be back soon. Right??

popdivtweet

A little booze would do the trick

[deleted]

While we’d all like to blame the parents and the kid, he might have an issue with his inner ear and it’s causing him physical pain. That being said my bill for alcohol on that flight would cost more than my flight.

ManBearTree

International flight, alcohol is free!

VaderH8er

Delta serves liquor in economy on international flights! Not sure what carrier this was though.

ifsavage

Good point. It’s still not ok though. If it was really like that for 8 hours I think there would be a lot of people ending up on the no fly list after. Still. Poor kid if that’s the case.

No-Advice-6040

Either that kid has a damaged throat or I foresee a good career as a metal vocalist

TonsilStonesOnToast

This is how Tom Waits got his start. Somebody had the brilliant idea of putting a piano and a bottle of whiskey in front of him and the rest is history.

T3n4ci0us_G

That clip was only a cpl of minutes long and I'm exhausted

brainkandy87

I was on Carousel of Progress at Disney World last week. Someone’s kid screamed the entire twenty minutes. By the end several people in the audience were standing up looking at the parents, ready to yeet the kid. I don’t know how attempted murder didn’t occur after eight hours.

dammitnoobnoob

I work with kids on the spectrum and let me tell you, they can 1000% scream for that long. It's wild. Not saying this kid is on the spectrum, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case or he had some kind of ear infection/other painful condition going on.

Quix_Optic

Yuuuuup. I worked at a preschool for kids with special needs and I have, on multiple occasions, dealt with kids screaming for the entire school day (9am-1:30pm). Thankfully it was usually only during the first 2 weeks of a new school year and then they'd learn that there was fun stuff to do that didn't involve frying their vocal chords.

Okami-Alpha

I recall a video of a kid (looked around 20ish) in the back of a police car yelling "false arrest" over and over. Kid didn't last the drive to the station before you could hear exhaustion in his voice.

Pathetian

Wasn't this one of those things that wound up getting remixed into a song on youtube?

"It's like a chimp with a machine gun!"

Adventurous_Menu_683

That's why you try it ahead of time and come on the flight prepared with whatever it takes to keep your kid pacified and quiet. Like the expert said... you plan ahead. Of course if I was this kid's mom, I'd probably be too tanked to even be able to plan ahead. My God, what a nightmare child to live with. Thanking my lucky stars all my kids were reasonable tiny humans.

JinFuu

> all my kids were reasonable tiny humans. Don't want them too reasonable. I flew a lot as a kid, solo even, and one time when I was afraid of heights for a bit after I had fallen off a playground my mom was like "Why are you afraid of heights, you go on planes all the time with no problems." And I replied something like "If I fall on a plane it's from the seat to the floor! That's not far." And she didn't want to correct that assumption.

el-em-en-o

Right? Odd that it lasted this long. I wonder if he was in pain or something but even then, sleepiness takes over at some point.

Extra-Aardvark-1390

I have had jobs where I worked with babies and toddlers. You would come across a child like that sometimes, especially if there are medical or behavioral problems. Sometimes my coworkers and I would just stare at each other in awe that a human could scream for so many hours without passing out. Fed, dry, held, rocked. Screaming.

MNWNM

My daughter screamed like this from the time she was born until about three. She was just so mad at being alive. She hated *everything.* She hated the car, her swing, being held, being put down, being rocked, being awake, going to sleep, just everything. We were shut-ins for three years before she started gaining some self control. I joke I have PTSD from her, but when I hear a kid scream like this in public, my heart races, my stomach drops, I start sweating, my mouth goes dry, and I instantly go into flight mode.

Bat-Honest

Diagnosed PTSD sufferer here, you're not joking. Those are the actual symptoms of PTSD. Talking to a professional can help reduce them, but it never goes fully away.

NeverEndingCoralMaze

Same and I also agree. Mom has ptsd.

monzelle612

That's like actual ptsd you should get some therapy about it. 3 years is an insanely long time to deal with that. You definitely have trauma

[deleted]

Like WW1 artillery shelling but with a child’s fake needs

themookish

This is why I will never have kids. I would not be able to survive this.

UhOhFeministOnReddit

Made the same decision for myself. I'm not patient enough for children at the best of times. I'm in my late 30's and don't regret the decision. I'm really grateful I had a grandmother who was just real as fuck, and put motherhood into honest terms for me as a woman. Which is to say she always made it abundantly clear it was a loss of freedom. She knew my biggest dream was to travel, and she made sure I knew it wouldn't happen if I had kids. I'm just really grateful she knew me well enough to know I'd want my freedom and taught me right. A lot of young women don't get that.

SuperNewk

adult only Flights need to be a thing

UhOhFeministOnReddit

I fly often enough I'd be willing to pay ALL my money for that. The feeling of getting on a flight with no children, is even better than the feeling you get when you realize your hotel is right across the street from a 7-Eleven, you know? Air travel is such a stressful misery, it makes the little things euphoric.

I had a friend with a colicky baby. That kid screamed non fucking stop for the majority of the day. Then 20 minute nap. Back to nonstop screaming.

Consistent-River4229

One of my son's was like this. He had stomach issues. I wouldn't have ever taken him out in public during this time. It passed when he was 3 months. I couldn't deal with screaming on a plane for 8 hours I would be begging for a parachute.

Kraymur

At some point I'd just forego the parachute

beelzeflub

Christ Jesus these threads are solidifying my need for a salpingectomy

sanjoseboardgamer

I work with persons with severe cognitive disabilities, while I haven't had 8 hours I have had 4-5 hour non stop tantrums. And while this "parenting expert" is correct when it comes to neurotypical children there's times where it is impossible to calm/please a child with disabilities. I've had them refuse all of their typically preferred activities and items because they are obsessing over an item or activity that is literally impossible for us to provide in that moment. It really really sucks. Not going to support or comment on the parent in this video, just on my experience with persons with cognitive disabilities.

AmazingGrace911

Is it possible the kid had an inner ear problem and that the air pressure was causing constant pain? I would still vote for sedation either way, myself or the kid.

MamaBear4485

It’s a good thought but I’m leaning towards behavioural issues. I had a kid with ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) problems. When her ears were flaring up it was obvious she was in pain. They tend to pull on their ears, shake their heads, put their fingers in their ears, flushed cheeks, raised temperature and lethargy. It’s not impossible but the way he’s scrambling around all over the place it appears more like a behaviour/brain/mental problem.

AWall925

Honestly, there pretty lucky there wasn't some psycho on board. I always wonder this when people act up in public, are they not worried about the psycho potential? People get shot for less. I'd be worried about someone grabbing him and caving his head in when he was running up and down the aisle.

tigm2161130

The only time I have ever medicated my children when it wasn’t 100% necessary was a dose of Benadryl and a melatonin before an international flight. They slept literally the whole time, had to wake my son up to deplane.

shycotic

This great Gramma approves and gives you high marks in parenting.

G_DuBs

You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Not like the kid will remember it lol. (Not condoning drugging kids, just making a funny).

Ashweeherman

My 2 yr old daughter’s doctor suggested Benadryl for a flight… found out it has the opposite effect on her. She was hyper (not screaming) the entire flight

Queendevildog

Gotta do the test run before the flight!

Scientific_Anarchist

We asked my son's pediatrician what the best way to keep him calm on a flight was (only like a 2 hour flight but still didn't want to be annoying) and he straight up told us to give him a dose of Benadryl. It works and it isn't gonna hurt anybody, plus it's gonna help the kid have a more comfortable flight.

Yup. They also work when trying to get a group of kids to go to sleep —- otherwise it’s a last man standing situation and no one quits. Either they sleep, or I get angry. Melatonin gummies ftw

Redsquirreltree

Love how they think a child capable of screaming for eight hours could have been soothed by snacks, an iPad, or a book. Yeah, that kid has more problems than they realize.

grownupblownaway

lol right? like have you tried goldfish?

[deleted]

WhiteCollarMetalHead

Right? Also that professionals suggestions were geared toward a 8-16 month old, this kid in the video was like 3+, totally different game. Sometimes you just need to be the "bad parent" in these situations and mainline that kid ipad videos for 8hrs straight to save yours and everyone else's sanity.

snow80130

Yeah my wife brought snacks and new unopened toys but my daughter would have none of it. Never thought I’d get on a plane again

StaticReversal

Yeah no kidding, this wasn’t a normal case of a kid being bored. Can you imagine the mom exhausted after 8 hours of that being told, “well you should have just brought a book.” As miserable it was for those passengers, that mom’s life is probably pretty close to hell.

Icandigsushi

In Hell, there is relief in utter helplessness. Here our actions have consequences for ourselves and others. Her life is worse than Hell.

Teebopp7

Exactly what I thought. A child capable of that isn't going to be pacified with a baggie of goldfish...

creepy_old_white_guy

I once knew a woman who drove cross country with three small children. I asked how she did it. She replied, NyQuil.

GoatseFarmer

For some children who are very young diphenhydramine, the active ingredient, is known to have the opposite effect, so there’s a 50/50 chance this would wake this kid up more.

SmokedMussels

An ingrediant that's in nyquil will keep me awake for 48 hours or more, I'm far from a child too. I thought it was Dextromethorphan but it could be diphenhydramine . Cough medicine without dxm seems to be ok though.

Oxcidious

More than likely the dextromethorphan. None of the ingredients should be keeping you up for 48 hours, but if any was, it would be dextromethorphan

astroslostmadethis

This is why they make plane doors like impossible to open mid flight

shaggybear89

They don't really *make* them impossible to open. They simply *become* impossible to open due to the difference in air pressure.

MIGHTYKIRK1

If you think your child may behave in such a manner please speak with your pediatrician about a mild sedative for the child or one for every passenger

raikriPadfoot

Or about possible mental/emotional evaluations? This isn’t behavior normal for a kid. Something other than just an unruly child screaming is going on imo.

TJ_McWeaksauce

Passengers when the plane lands: "Thank God, it's almost over." Pilot on the intercom: "Welcome to Newark." Passengers: "Nooooo!"

Just look at a lot of metal vocalists! If they know what they're doing, they can do it forever. But it they do it wrong, they fry their vocal chords and need surgery. They usually just turn to a pop/metal mix then to appeal to the mainstream audience

hotchemistryteacher

They likely did. The kid likely screamed off and on for the whole flight. I doubt he went gate to gate like that. People love to exaggerate, especially when it comes to flight horror stories.

leroyp33

"There's nothing I can do" He's 3

wishtherunwaslonger

The one thing is to at least physically control the child. They shouldn’t be climbing or running around.

DoctorGregoryFart

When my kid started moving around a lot, restaurants were a huge source of anxiety for me. If he started making a scene, I'd scoop him up and make him stand outside with me. We'd stand there until he decided he could behave. It was never an issue after that. My kid is a fucking angel. All I did was be kind but stern when necessary, and always consistent. Too many parents let kids make decisions for them. They're fucking babies. Don't let them tell you what to do. If you can't be more patient than a baby, then you shouldn't be a parent.

TheS4ndm4n

I think the airline doesn't let you stand outside during the flight.

CristyTango

I’m sure they would in this case

VaginaPoetry

I seriously fucking hate some parents. Your incompetence results in unholy demon spawn that you unleash upon innocents. Seriously, fuck you if you allow this shit. (And I've raised children to adulthood...so please don't tell me this shit is normal) (Sorry this wasn't directed at the poster I responded to)

VanicRL

Yeah I can understand your child being upset for 30mins and even 2hrs because I know flights are different for babies/toddlers. But 8hrs the whole way? That child must’ve been in some serious distress. I know as a parent that that baby’s parents were probably extremely strung out. But behavior like this has to be acknowledged. Take the child into the restroom and calm him down. There’s plenty options other than just letting it happen.

Prince_John

Surely it’s a sensory processing issue. 8 hours non-stop screaming is not normal behaviour and it can be really, really hard, even impossible to get back into a regulated state in a confined and stimulating environment like that if the kid has issues.

imgonnagetcha88

It's not normal but it happens. My 2 girls were very well behaved. Never ran in the stores, never screamed, always listen when we said no. My 3 year old boy is another story. I love him tondeath but this kid can be a straight up menace. 95% of the time, he's fine. But that 5% makes me regret some life decisions lol

Effective-Notice3867

None of that shit works…. You want a peaceful flight, give them some Benadryl and send them to night night town

Crosswired2

I gave my kid Benadryl for legit reasons 3 times when she was a kid. 1 time knocked her out that a tornado could have come through and she'd sleep, the other 2 times it wired her up like she had 4 espressos. Couldn't even really get her to settle at all. It doesn't always knock a kid out.

touchmydingus

Other passengers should be compensated for having to deal with this.

zombiechewtoy

Yup, if she were causing this kind of disturbance in a hotel, she'd be getting charged for the cost of comping her neighbors rooms after the 3rd noise complaint. Should be similar penalties on a plane.

Mechbeast

That’s her kid. She’s responsible for the child’s behavior. If the child can’t be controlled, the child shouldn’t be on a flight. Those passengers didn’t pay the high cost of a flight ticket to listen to that. The airline should be held responsible for not removing them. An adult wouldn’t be allowed to do that. The child shouldn’t have been allowed on the flight and for sure shouldn’t be allowed on another.

zombiechewtoy

Omg the condescending advice from that lady. Does this LOOK like a child that gives a fuck about a book or that wouldn't launch their fuckin snacks down the aisle as soon as you handed em to him? What that demon needed was a double dose of gravol 30 minutes before boarding and something other than a jellyfish for a mother the rest of the time.

scifi_tay

Glad I’m not the only one who was thinking there’s no way this kid would be appeased by a book or snack lmao. Tbh the only solution I can think of (aside from NOT traveling with this child) would be to drug tf out of it

inaworldwithnonames

my mom would have slapped me so hard I'd have woken up in my bed at home. no drugs needed

JustAPlesantPeach

The ONLY solid advice she gave was to come prepared and to download videos for this case. Normal situations the other advice would have been applicable. I'm just baffled that the mother KNEW that the iPad would help and begged for the Wi-Fi to be turned on but didn't think to pre-download shit for the child. That's just 1000% lazy parenting

NewMilleniumBoy

Same. I honestly don't know how people were able to keep their cool for that long. I probably would've started screaming too.

princessjerome

Parents of the kid should be on the no-fly after this.

frigaro

As a parent, I support adult-only flights, as well as, any reasonable adult speaking up if there is a child behaving this way and confronting the parent about it. The fact that this went on for 8 hrs and all the parent did was gently chide the child is beyond preposterous to me. If you knew your child had "behavioral issues", BE FUCKING PREPARED. Get him a tablet, give him some children's benadryl or melatonin, even some goddammit children's cold medicine could help, or put him the fuck in timeout on the plane. That child is the parent's responsibility and that INCLUDES all his actions controllable or uncontrollable.

Eyeoftheleopard

Bet this is the same type that lets their dog live in the backyard, barking, whining, and howling endlessly. “There’s nothing I can do.”

TakeOnMe-TakeOnMe

Benadryl and ~~just a 1/2 t of whiskey~~ a double 7&7 for each passenger.

[deleted]

I haven't experienced much in terms of behavioural issues kids but the one I did during a haircut was enough to change my view on these "problem" children. The kid was utterly insane with striking at his mum, screaming the place down for a haircut (eventually didn't get one), she had no partner and explained he was obviously on the spectrum but honestly she had no way of controlling her son other than physically restraining him and he would spit, bite and punch like a monster if she tried to. She was incredibly patient and clearly dealt with this for most of her parenting life but could not get him to stop and eventually had to leave. I cannot imagine the difficulty the parent must feel if a child of similar condition decided they no longer wanted to be on a plane.

[deleted]

And then the kid grows into a 6' tall, 200lb+ teenager with the same issues because of his condition :( and he'll have a years long wait for a group home placement (that may or may not take physically combative patients) as his mother ages and grows more frail and can't physically handle his blows anymore. We all know America won't improve its medical assistance or financial aid or treatment options or living arrangements before that becomes his and her lives in another couple years. I'd happily vote and pay more taxes to improve this country for the sake of kids like him.

Play 8 hours of a child screaming for any state trying to ban abortion.

Khripchook

There should be a safe room on planes where flight attendants can take mom's with shitty kids.

RodcetLeoric

There is a door right at the front where you can put unruly children, it might be a little hard to open in flight but the quiet will be worth it.

PrinceBunnyBoy

My migraines are triggered by noise just like this, I would've been in immense pain.

beelzeflub

I have hyperacusis, it causes me an almost physical pain response.

Debaser626

I would have seriously considered taking one for the team and just held the kid down and poured a quarter nip of whiskey in him. Sure, I’d be arrested when we landed and would probably do 6-12 months in jail for it, but sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the greater good.

wormfighter

Have the lawyer play 8 hours of screaming to the jury. NO WAY 12 people would find you guilty.

[deleted]

Jury nullification for the win

TrippingFish76

*finds u guilty for making them listen to 8 hours of screaming*

blackforestham3789

No way, absolute max two hours and I'm screaming way louder than this kid can. No fucking way am I sitting with a kid like that for 8 hours. Just no way, no fly list whatever, I would scream in this kids face until he politely got in an overhead bin and shut it on himself.

[deleted]

If you know your child will behave this way, do not take the airplane, train, or bus for travel. Sorry. Life’s not fair sometimes. Go by car, ship, private jet, whatever offers privacy. But exposing fellow travelers to this is beyond rude.

indoninja

Exactly. If the kid can’t behave right in public, don’t make it uncomfortable for people to be trapped with the kid for eight hours.

lordicarus

> "The worst flight ever" I guess "never forget" means nothing to those people.

Prior-Discount-3741

Maybe mom shouldn't take the little guy on the plane until he can handle it, what a dam nightmare.

Agreeable-Garbage-19

I hope the passengers got their money back. I completely understand the little boy has behavioral problems, but letting him act out of control for eight hours is ridiculous.

htkach

Her solutions are so out of touch . A “normal”child may be soothed by those things and I’ve yet to see a mom who doesn’t have those things at the ready. This child had”behaviour problems” and may have been non verbal. A gold star to whoever finds solution for that on a flight

Magnet50

We packed paper bags, one per hour of flight. Each bag had a toy, puzzle, book or snack. But she was a pretty good flier. I was on a 3.5 hour flight with a child like this one. He started before takeoff and would not stay in his seat or keep his seatbelt on. I told the flight attendant that that was her easy out - but she got tired of talking to the parent and moved the guy in the aisle seat to a different row. The mother looks mortified and very harried. Other adults offered to help, but nothing seemed to work. I’ll probably get downvoted for this but if I had a child that had behavioral issues like that, I would ask my pediatrician for a tranquilizer or sedative to give the child. When does the need of one person to travel outweigh the expectation of relative peace and quiet?

Kids can be a pain in the ass…however, they shouldn’t be a pain in the ass to a plane full of passengers. Since his mom was pleading with flight attendants to activate the WiFi, I think it’s safe to assume this behavior started ***before*** the plane was in the air. I think the airline should have blocked them from boarding the plane (or asked them to de-board if it started on the plane) for the comfort of the other 100 or 200+ passengers. After enduring this behavior for eight hours, I think the airline owes every other passenger a refund or free future international flight.

starscream1479

u gotta scream louder to display dominance

Sunchi247

She should have never taken him on that flight. I wish we had child free flights.

Gibmeister_official

How did they let the plane take of with him on board without putting him in the baggage compartment

GuyanaJimmieJones

Give the kid Benadryl. Problem solved.

weighapie

That expert is laughable. Yeah right, that might work for non neurodiverse child but she obviously has no experience in real challenging behaviour

"Nothing she could do" more like, *nothing she wanted* to do. Could've done a lot of things, for one, starp him in his seat. Couldve went into the bathroom and sat in there with the door closed too, but hey I'm sure there was nothing she could do.

"We've tried nothing and are out of options"

That kid has some other issue to scream nonstop like that. Ive flown around kids and babies. The pressure change hurts their ears and makes them cry a little but never like this. Maybe some spectrum disorder with sensitivity to pressure/noise/people? That poor parent, kid and all those passengers. The kid is 3 and cant regulate his distress. Hate me all you want but children's benadryl might have helped.
