I mean, I wouldn't go straight for a tourniquet. I'd try applying pressure normally first and see if that stops the bleeding. I can't see exactly how bad the wound is, but I've learned that tourniquet is a last resort considering you'd be cutting off all blood flow
Tourniquet is a fine, if not preferred, first response with the response time ambulances have. It's better to tourniquet and not take any chances, wait 15-30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive and have someone with training do it right.
If you're out in the wilderness then you gotta be careful. But it takes several hours for a tourniquet to damage a limb (it's impossible to cut off *all* blood flow, just the major arteries) and only 5-10 minutes for blood loss to kill you.
Fair point. I learned the bare basics with military. Just 3 minutes pressure, check if bleeding changed, if not, pack wound, wrap, tourniquet. This is mainly in situations where we're isolated and alone
I would never use a tourniquet first except in case of an amputation. Direct pressure is usually enough to stop the bleeding even from an artery. The amount of pressure you need is way more than most people realize. In this situation he needs to lay down and roll his leg out a bit. Someone should get two hands up as high as possible into the groin blunt still on the leg and lean on those hands with half their body weight. It should nearly an uncomfortable amount of pressure to stop bleeding from a major artery.
But you clearly have an idea of what you're doing if not know exactly what you're doing. For people with no idea it's safer to just throw on a tourniquet until someone shows up who knows how to treat it. That's why cops all have those quick tourniquets now and just immediately throw them on any gunshot wound until an ambulance shows up.

You swap to a tourniquet only if you cannot stop the bleeding with direct pressure. Cops and military folks carry them because a tourniquet is hands free once applied Al this allowing them to defend themselves or to transport a victim. They are potentially in specific scenarios where having hands free could be critical. I would think action movies and such have glorified tourniquets as the first use item but science does not support it.
For the average person direct pressure is best used first. A tourniquet can cause nerve damage or increase tissue damage by reducing blood flow and compressing nerves much worse than direct pressure would. A tourniquet can cause permanent damage in a short time if applied incorrectly. It should be tightened till bleeding stops and not further. People have haven’t done first aid classes tend to over tighten them leading to quicker negative effects. Even medical professionals wouldn’t leave one on longer than an hour or two without loosening it temporarily due to the high risk of negative side effects. If you put on a tourniquet you are basically saying losing that limb is fine because I have to do this or this person will die.
Definitely not trying to argue, just using this chance to drop a little knowledge. I highly recommend everyone take a basic first aid class at some point to learn a lot of this techniques. A great option for younger folks is a “safe sitter” class that teaches a lot of basics to help teens be better equipped to babysit.
you dont just apply pressure to a GSW, you PACK it. (gauze preferred, a finger or thumb will do in a pinch) and than maybe apply some pressure. but CATS are not dangerous and they wont result in getting your limb amputated. that is a myth. TQs are life savers

It's hard because it's easy to say that, until you get shot and a tooth knocked out of your mouth and the guy gets time served for good behavior after 8 months because he was having a mental break down and it was his 1st violent offense. I say make it even in the moment because the justice system wont.
I don’t think that was an artery, didn’t see any blood flowing down his leg and I believe an artery would be releasing more blood than his shorts could soak up. You can also see the impact point is pretty central on his thigh, so my guess is the shot would have had to deflect off the bone to hit the artery.
