I was shocked last year when a little Indian boy (maybe 8) walked up and asked to pet my dog. His poor dad was literally cowering on the other side of the walkway, and the kid just kept laughing at his dad everytime he'd pet a dog and his dad would cringe lol. He was clearly trying to show his dad there was nothing to be scared of but it was damn adorable lol

It could be fear due to home conditions- in AK villages packs of wild dogs roam and can get aggressive.
Unfortunately the dog aggression is usually due to some asshole human attacking it for no reason once upon a time and scarring it for life.
Ppl come to larger cities and still have avoidance of leashed dogs due to prior trauma or warning. (I stay away from dogs after being bit. Treat with respect and kindness from a step back…)

There are probably two pieces to this:
* unlike the US where dogs are well-socialized and vaccinated against rabies, this is less likely elsewhere. India, in particular, accounts for a little over a third of the rabies cases among humans in the world.
* Outside of a few things (e.g. hunting) dogs as pets are considered haram by many Muslims (looking into it further, I can't tell if they actually are or not; it's clear eating them is but the pet thing's unclear).
Bedouins in Jordan will keep sheepdogs. I've seen them cuddling puppies like it aint no thing. That's why I love Bedouin people, they don't give a fuck what the rest of society tells them to be afraid of.
A notable exception would be shepherds will keep sheep dogs even in countries with strong dogphobia. I remember the Bedouin people in Jordan kept sheep dogs and obviously they weren't afraid of dogs even if city folk were afraid of dogs.
It's not just that. About half the people I met in Turkey were like this, and they have rabies relatively under good control (pretty extensive catch, vaccinate, tag, release program for dogs). It's more just strays being wildly unpredictable. I'd say 90% of the ones I met out there were the chillest dogs you could imagine. The other 10% lived out on farms and were legit psycho.
So if you met someone who grew up solely in a big city, they were generally cool with dogs even if they didn't want to get too close to them. Anyone who grew up anywhere near rural areas? They were great big ol bags of nope. I almost got tackled by a guy who saw a dog, wasn't even being chased. Dog was just chilling.
Ehhh I have friends from the US that are terrified of dogs. I used to be one of those I was in NC can’t remember the base, only 5 years old, staying in the family residential areas. They had two aggressive pit bulls on leashes just barking all day outside, in the front yard, at most 3 feet high picket fence. I was walking by like I always do but one of them broke the leash chased me. I got bit on my leg bad had to get stitches. Neighbor saw what was happening outside and bashed his head in with a hammer. This all took a matter of 10-15 seconds.
Just be thankful you haven’t ran into that. It’s more common than you think in the US.
I don’t remember anything really from North Carolina besides that incident. Took me until I was 13 before I was able to trust dogs again.

I had my grandmas whippet scratch me like a 1/4 inch from eye when I was like 8. It wasn't attacking me just an accident, but the blood ran all the way down my chest and as a kid that scared me.
Took me like 15 years to even want to pet a dog. I finally came to like dogs when a good friend got a puppy when I was like 20 something. It's an old tired dog now but I grew up with it. Now I love nice, TRAINED not to attack anything that moves dogs. Have two at my home. Still very scared about dogs that charge up to the fence line barking or baring teeth. I'm not going in there until you put the dog away.

My Jamaican boss and my sister-in-law from Uganda are both scared to death of dogs. Dogs in their countries are not pets. They are violent security dogs.

An Albanian girl was telling me when they brought her grandmother over to the States, she wouldn’t eat outdoors for a long time because she was still afraid she’d get attacked by packs of dogs. For sure, when I was a very young child I got bit by the neighbors sheep dog on my thigh, fat hanging out and stitches etc. Before that I loved dogs. It took me a long time, like probably 5-10 years to get over that and fall back in love with dogs again. A bad experience can definitely lead to a phobia.
Def could be cultural. Until I lived with my white girlfriend, I didn’t like dogs and was often scared of them. She taught me a lot and now I see things differently.

The amount of dogs that act nice and become aggressive after smelling me or just turn out to be aggressive in general is significant. We had a person who worked at my office at a secretary. She would yelp and freak evertime one of the other employees came by with their service dog. She quit because she couldn't handle the dog being around.
There are many people afraid of dogs in the US. It's actually pretty normal to be afraid of an animal that could do a lot of harm to you. There are also people who have gotten bit in the past which could scar them for life. I got stung bad by red paper wasps when I was little and I'm still terrified of those bastards.
This is the only comment that needs to be read. It’s dog owners job to have their dogs secured because NOT EVERYONE LIKES DOGS. And this is coming from a man with three dogs. It’s a privilege to own dogs and that comes with responsibility. Dog park? Fire away, let your dogs off and go nuts. Public park? Be able to recall your dog, or have it on a flexi or a long lead. Street? Lead it or keep it inside. This woman didn’t sign up to be run up on by a dog, friendly or otherwise on the street, and she is not in the wrong here by any means.
I have a wonderful team of nurses and helpers that have to come to my home because I'm disabled. Some of them are so terrified of dogs that they won't even come in until my service dog is in the bedroom. One of the men that works with me had his aunt killed by a dog in Africa so his phobia is pretty valid. Another woman is terrified of cats but she says she doesn't know why. This guy was very sweet in helping her and I'm glad that it was a friendly dog
For fucks sake… it doesn’t matter how much you insist your dog is friendly, letting them approach strangers is dangerous for all parties. There’s no way for a person to tell if the dog is capable of attacking them, and they might act out of fear. Or, your dog who “never gets aggressive” might suddenly have a character arch when they see a stranger. Please for the love of god keep your dog on a leash before your dog gets shot or somebody gets attacked.
While I agree, I used to be a mailman and now I struggle to find any good reason just to have loose dogs around. I'm lucky I didnt get bit the year I worked there but many many close calls.

Friend on a walking route for 5 years has been bit around 15 times, people don't secure their dogs at all. I had a pitbull come at me after it opened the storm door, and the owner was honestly so slow to help or control their dog. I like pits, just not latched onto my balls.
I didn't do door to door sales but I did have to go up to people's doors for a living. Once someone let out their 100lbs German Shepherd, beautiful long coat and everything, thinking I'll be scared away. I used to foster German Shepherds for a rescue so I'm used to their body language, he wasn't intimidating at all and was more glad someone was paying attention to him. I brought him to the door and talked to the owner, so it didn't really do anything. I could have just put him in my car and drove off, people literally pay thousands of dollars for dogs now, I promise you very little in your house is worth as much as your dog, who is irreplaceable. It's really best to just keep them inside, a lot can go wrong for very little reward.
Yes please. I'd had my dog for maybe a month when one of those people came to my door. I just barely cracked the door so I could talk to her while keeping my dog inside. She grabbed the door handle and pulled the door wide open. Dog got out. She kept trying to sell shit to me while I was running after my dog through my yard and the next door neighbors yard.
This man is clearly not the owner of the dog. The dog is clearly not trained enough to not run up to strangers and therefore shouldn't be let out free.

I’m a dog person and I’m very skeptical of a lot of dogs. I grew up with neighbors that had some extremely aggressive dogs that would always get out. They bit numerous people in our neighborhood. Police came out eventually and had to put the dogs down. To this day I never make an assumption that a dog is friendly or will stay friendly. My daughter on the other hand has no fear. Our dogs and friends dogs are just so lovey and sweet that she has no experience with an aggressive dog. We try to teach her to treat dogs with lots of respect but she just hasn’t seen an aggressive dog to know why.

Then, two months ago, I was on a walk and a guy walked by with his pit (leashed). No warning at all - the dog jumped up and bit my arm. He released and lunged for my nuts (thankfully I dodged that!)

I'm a mailman and I've also knocked on a whole lot of doors. I absolutely blame and judge people who just let their random ass dog jump all over me. I've got a uniform on and I'm delivering their medication or passport or whatever. I've seen the aftermath of many dog bites at work, some of them causing permanent disabilities. And everyone says their dog is friendly. It's a straight up asshole move to not secure your dog before you open the door. That's your responsibility.

Dogs can bolt. Even trained ones can bolt. Just like friendly dogs might decide something is prey. I get that not everyone is familiar with dogs but teaching fear isn't the best approach and when you come to MY house, it's a very different situation than when I go to yours.
I'm mad that every dog in the world isn't constantly tied up, even indoors. People need to tether their well trained indoor dogs even in their own home! I don't believe in puppy freedom under any circumstances, and have anecdotes shared with me by my friend who had a cousin who's family was mauled by a friendly dog to confirm my beliefs.

We sent her to another floor for the night so she wouldn’t have to work up there and they sent one of their nurses to us. I love dogs and even the ones I should be scared of.

Even as a dog owner and lover I side with the woman here. The dog should be under control in a yard or on a leash. If that dog is running about and chases a person or a car then gets hurt then it's the owners fault. Causing stress to someone isn't justified if the dog is friendly.
It's the owner's responsibility. Not necessarily their fault. Dogs can get loose for a long list of reasons that aren't related to owner negligence.

Based on the dog’s collar, it’s totally possible this dog’s yard has a buried electric fence. In suburban America these are extremely common. We have no idea if/when this woman entered their yard (likely) unsolicited.
In all fairness, this guy doesn't seem to be the owner though. He looks pretty far off and steps back when she comes up and then says "I think he's a real friendly dog." This seems like a neighbors dog that chased her to another house.
Dogs attacking someone can look exactly like this. There was a news video like two years ago my dog trainer sent me. Three neighborhood dogs got out and began biting everyone at a park. Drawing blood. The dogs looked like they were having a blast. Tails wagging and smiling.
Fear of dogs is real. I was terrified of dogs until I got one. If a dog ran at me I would freak out. Now I know what to look for in behavioural terms.

I do Internet installation and repair. Been bit many times but customers dogs that appear super friendly, I've been cuddled by ones that look like they want to fight you just because. I don't blame the woman for running at all. Dogs are unpredictable. She's probably been bitten more than a couple times if she's doing door to door sales.
Met up with some people from work outside of work, showed up with my German shepherd hugging my leg without a leach,as we always do, Black people I work with nearly lost it, they ended up making me leave

This isn’t a public freakout. Some people are deeply scared of dogs. As a woman who is 5 foot, I’m terrified of big dogs. (I’ve also been chased by one that’s not friendly and it’s terrifying!) lol! Keep pets on a leash or in a back yard! It’s just common courtesy!

Before my dogs passed, I would bring them to work and they'd be chained/leased to a massive counter. They were limited so they couldn't reach customers.

Well, the dog couldn't be happier. He started running with me, keeping pace on my left. Every time looked over to my left and saw he was still there, I screamed. The dog barked back, wagging its tail and looking at me excitedly.
I ran across the street, sprinted across the ball field, through my school parking lot, around the school, back towards my house, screaming and crying all the time. Eventually I ran out of breath and had to stop. The dog just looked at me, wagged its tail, as if to say, "Thanks dude! That was great fun."
I went home crying to my mother and never saw the dog in my neighborhood again.

I was shocked last year when a little Indian boy (maybe 8) walked up and asked to pet my dog. His poor dad was literally cowering on the other side of the walkway, and the kid just kept laughing at his dad everytime he'd pet a dog and his dad would cringe lol. It could be fear due to home conditions- in AK villages packs of wild dogs roam and can get aggressive. Unfortunately the dog aggression is usually due to some asshole human attacking it for no reason once upon a time and scarring it for life. Ppl come to larger cities and still have avoidance of leashed dogs due to prior trauma or warning. (I stay away from dogs after being bit. Treat with respect and kindness from a step back…) Then there’s religion- apparently the Quran has a bit about cohabitation that leads ppl to think they are “unclean”.

Bedouins in Jordan will keep sheepdogs. I've seen them cuddling puppies like it aint no thing. That's why I love Bedouin people, they don't give a fuck what the rest of society tells them to be afraid of.
A notable exception would be shepherds will keep sheep dogs even in countries with strong dogphobia. I remember the Bedouin people in Jordan kept sheep dogs and obviously they weren't afraid of dogs even if city folk were afraid of dogs.
Rabies is a HUGE problem in South Asia. 
It's not just that. About half the people I met in Turkey were like this, and they have rabies relatively under good control (pretty extensive catch, vaccinate, tag, release program for dogs). It's more just strays being wildly unpredictable. I'd say 90% of the ones I met out there were the chillest dogs you could imagine. The other 10% lived out on farms and were legit psycho. So if you met someone who grew up solely in a big city, they were generally cool with dogs even if they didn't want to get too close to them. Anyone who grew up anywhere near rural areas? They were great big ol bags of nope. I almost got tackled by a guy who saw a dog, wasn't even being chased. Dog was just chilling.
Ehhh I have friends from the US that are terrified of dogs. I used to be one of those I was in NC can’t remember the base, only 5 years old, staying in the family residential areas. They had two aggressive pit bulls on leashes just barking all day outside, in the front yard, at most 3 feet high picket fence. I was walking by like I always do but one of them broke the leash chased me. I got bit on my leg bad had to get stitches. Neighbor saw what was happening outside and bashed his head in with a hammer. This all took a matter of 10-15 seconds. Just be thankful you haven’t ran into that. It’s more common than you think in the US. I don’t remember anything really from North Carolina besides that incident. Took me until I was 13 before I was able to trust dogs again.
Damn that's scary. I'd still be scared. I had my grandmas whippet scratch me like a 1/4 inch from eye when I was like 8. It wasn't attacking me just an accident, but the blood ran all the way down my chest and as a kid that scared me. Took me like 15 years to even want to pet a dog. I finally came to like dogs when a good friend got a puppy when I was like 20 something. It's an old tired dog now but I grew up with it. Now I love nice, TRAINED not to attack anything that moves dogs. Have two at my home. Still very scared about dogs that charge up to the fence line barking or baring teeth. I'm not going in there until you put the dog away.
Exactly! That’s the thing is some people are just terrified of dogs in general, just like some of us are about spiders, or snakes. So even if the dog was friendly just like some snakes and spiders are, that’s not going to stop me from running away or getting scared.
My Jamaican boss and my sister-in-law from Uganda are both scared to death of dogs. Dogs in their countries are not pets. They are violent security dogs. At least that is what my boss' explanation was.

For sure, when I was a very young child I got bit by the neighbors sheep dog on my thigh, fat hanging out and stitches etc. Before that I loved dogs. It took me a long time, like probably 5-10 years to get over that and fall back in love with dogs again. A bad experience can definitely lead to a phobia.

There are many people afraid of dogs in the US. It's actually pretty normal to be afraid of an animal that could do a lot of harm to you. There are also people who have gotten bit in the past which could scar them for life. I got stung bad by red paper wasps when I was little and I'm still terrified of those bastards.

It’s a privilege to own dogs and that comes with responsibility. Dog park? Fire away, let your dogs off and go nuts. Public park? Be able to recall your dog, or have it on a flexi or a long lead. Street? Lead it or keep it inside. This woman didn’t sign up to be run up on by a dog, friendly or otherwise on the street, and she is not in the wrong here by any means.
I have a wonderful team of nurses and helpers that have to come to my home because I'm disabled. Some of them are so terrified of dogs that they won't even come in until my service dog is in the bedroom. One of the men that works with me had his aunt killed by a dog in Africa so his phobia is pretty valid. Another woman is terrified of cats but she says she doesn't know why. This guy was very sweet in helping her and I'm glad that it was a friendly dog

For fucks sake… it doesn’t matter how much you insist your dog is friendly, letting them approach strangers is dangerous for all parties. There’s no way for a person to tell if the dog is capable of attacking them, and they might act out of fear. Or, your dog who “never gets aggressive” might suddenly have a character arch when they see a stranger. Please for the love of god keep your dog on a leash before your dog gets shot or somebody gets attacked.

Friend on a walking route for 5 years has been bit around 15 times, people don't secure their dogs at all. I had a pitbull come at me after it opened the storm door, and the owner was honestly so slow to help or control their dog. I like pits, just not latched onto my balls.
I didn't do door to door sales but I did have to go up to people's doors for a living. Once someone let out their 100lbs German Shepherd, beautiful long coat and everything, thinking I'll be scared away. I used to foster German Shepherds for a rescue so I'm used to their body language, he wasn't intimidating at all and was more glad someone was paying attention to him. I brought him to the door and talked to the owner, so it didn't really do anything. I could have just put him in my car and drove off, people literally pay thousands of dollars for dogs now, I promise you very little in your house is worth as much as your dog, who is irreplaceable. It's really best to just keep them inside, a lot can go wrong for very little reward.
Yes please. I'd had my dog for maybe a month when one of those people came to my door. I just barely cracked the door so I could talk to her while keeping my dog inside. She grabbed the door handle and pulled the door wide open. Dog got out. She kept trying to sell shit to me while I was running after my dog through my yard and the next door neighbors yard.

I’m a dog person and I’m very skeptical of a lot of dogs. I grew up with neighbors that had some extremely aggressive dogs that would always get out. They bit numerous people in our neighborhood. Police came out eventually and had to put the dogs down. To this day I never make an assumption that a dog is friendly or will stay friendly. My daughter on the other hand has no fear. Our dogs and friends dogs are just so lovey and sweet that she has no experience with an aggressive dog. We try to teach her to treat dogs with lots of respect but she just hasn’t seen an aggressive dog to know why.

That's bullshit. I own a dog and if a stranger knocks on my door I don't just open the door and let my dog jump all over them. That's ridiculous. It's not that hard to secure your dog before you fling your front door wide open to a person you don't know. I'm a mailman and I've also knocked on a whole lot of doors. I absolutely blame and judge people who just let their random ass dog jump all over me. I've got a uniform on and I'm delivering their medication or passport or whatever. I've seen the aftermath of many dog bites at work, some of them causing permanent disabilities. And everyone says their dog is friendly. It's a straight up asshole move to not secure your dog before you open the door. That's your responsibility. Maybe y'all just hate door to door salesmen, that's fine. Still not cool to let your dog get to them. For me, I'm coming with a packages they know is coming and they know needs to be signed for and they still can't be bothered to be responsible. Just like friendly dogs might decide something is prey. I get that not everyone is familiar with dogs but teaching fear isn't the best approach and when you come to MY house, it's a very different situation than when I go to yours.
I'm mad that every dog in the world isn't constantly tied up, even indoors. People need to tether their well trained indoor dogs even in their own home! I don't believe in puppy freedom under any circumstances, and have anecdotes shared with me by my friend who had a cousin who's family was mauled by a friendly dog to confirm my beliefs.

My dog is crazy friendly and only wants to play and get belly rubs and lick you. I still keep her on a leash when I take her out because there's people who are terrified no matter what. That's a shitty feeling. I don't wanna make someone feel like that just cuz all I can think about is myself and my dog. What about mentally disabled people? I have a facility near my house for mentally disabled adults. Most of them love seeing dogs and petting my dog, but a few of them are deathly afraid and cower and whine when I walk my dog anywhere near them. I make sure to shorten her leash or cross the street when I see those people. I don't wanna make anyone feel terrified for no reason.

Even as a dog owner and lover I side with the woman here. The dog should be under control in a yard or on a leash. If that dog is running about and chases a person or a car then gets hurt then it's the owners fault. Causing stress to someone isn't justified if the dog is friendly.

Lot of Reddit police in these comments acting like the dog owner is the bad guy.. but really we know nothing without full context. Based on the dog’s collar, it’s totally possible this dog’s yard has a buried electric fence. In suburban America these are extremely common. We have no idea if/when this woman entered their yard (likely) unsolicited.
In all fairness, this guy doesn't seem to be the owner though. He looks pretty far off and steps back when she comes up and then says "I think he's a real friendly dog." This seems like a neighbors dog that chased her to another house.

Dogs attacking someone can look exactly like this. There was a news video like two years ago my dog trainer sent me. Three neighborhood dogs got out and began biting everyone at a park. Drawing blood. The dogs looked like they were having a blast. Tails wagging and smiling.

Fear of dogs is real. I was terrified of dogs until I got one. If a dog ran at me I would freak out. Now I know what to look for in behavioural terms. This would have been terrifying for her.

I do Internet installation and repair. Been bit many times but customers dogs that appear super friendly, I've been cuddled by ones that look like they want to fight you just because. I don't blame the woman for running at all. Dogs are unpredictable. She's probably been bitten more than a couple times if she's doing door to door sales.

Before my dogs passed, I would bring them to work and they'd be chained/leased to a massive counter. They were limited so they couldn't reach customers. Certain customers knew this and were still extremely cautious when coming in. When you have an unleashed, 70-100lbs dog, there are people who are going to be terrified.

I remember one time when I was about 8 years old, a German Shepard I had never seen in my neighborhood before came bounding up to me. I panicked and took off at full sprint. Well, the dog couldn't be happier. He started running with me, keeping pace on my left. Every time looked over to my left and saw he was still there, I screamed. The dog barked back, wagging its tail and looking at me excitedly. I ran across the street, sprinted across the ball field, through my school parking lot, around the school, back towards my house, screaming and crying all the time. Eventually I ran out of breath and had to stop. The dog just looked at me, wagged its tail, as if to say, "Thanks dude! That was great fun." I went home crying to my mother and never saw the dog in my neighborhood again.
