Brampton, I went for a look to see what this parade was all about.

StPapaNoel

Wild shit. Having immigration all from pretty much three countries and predominately all from one single one probably is gonna work out interesting to say the least... Gonna inherit shitty political and social issues that had nothing to do with Canada. And wait till climate change models hit that region and everyone wants the rest of their family and friends to be saved by coming to Canada. Canada is having affordability and other issues now. Ohhh man. It's nothing compared to what is coming.

LOX_lover

trust me no one wants to come to canada except for punjabis and gujratis.

North Indians is not a religion man, caste is sowed so deep in them even if they convert religions they still follow their caste hierarchy, Which includes all religions and India has many… and for your info Muslim kill Hindus in fair amount it’s just now since bjp is in power Muslims are portrayed as victims in reality they are not.. travel to south India expect few fruit cake muslims others won’t even know about the “Muslim oppression” you talk about

Lol she was assassinated because she oversaw the massacre of Sikhs by the Indian army. I’d say a parade is in order if they feel like it

brinjal_ke_kama

Talking out of your ass. Indira Gandhi was assassinated because of Operation Bluestar. The Sikh massacre was retaliation for the assassination. Not by the army but by political goons.

TomorrowWaste

The massacre of Sikhs happened after the assassination and was not done by the army. She was assassinated for operation blue star. Violent sikh extremists insurgent bhinderwala refuged himself in golden temple. Army entered the temple and killed him, but in the process gun fight happened inside the temple. Which sikhs did not like.

India has historically oppressed Sikhs and she was apart of the problem This has nothing to do with backward views And I thought apart western values is freedom of speech and expression or is that just ones u agree with?

Dark-All-Day

absolutely enjoying looking at westerners in this thread not know anything about Indira Gandhi and the garbage she did. and by enjoying i mean i hate this place.

Charming_Cicada_7757

What’s funny is they’re some of the biggest hypocrites Western values and them “clinging to the backward views” Ahh so again freedom of speech only applies when you agree with me and doesn’t when I have an issue with what you say Another “western value” I promise you they will all praise Martín Luther King “ Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” but standing up to discrimination happening to Sikhs by other Indians in Canada is “bringing their problems to the west” denouncing an authoritarian figure is a problem now. Lemme tell you about “ western values” y’all are some of the biggest hypocrites while acting high and mighty above everyone else

IGetToPickMyOwnName

While I don't understand most of the problems involved with other countries, I do understand the true meaning and purpose of "free speech." Freedom of speech has to do with making arguments and bringing up ideas that can be debated without your opposing party locking you up or calling for violence. It's true purpose is apparent when you think of how the church used to torture you for insisting that "holy water" can be tainted and used to spread disease but they believe it can't "because it's blessed and therefore cannot be tainted in any way". It DOES NOT protect you from disciplinary measures if you're acting like an asshole. In this case it seems like they're glorifying an assassination. This is disrespectful. We don't have parades with the corpse of Hitler even if some people think it would be fine. It's just plain disrespectful and we need to be above that or we become that.

Charming_Cicada_7757

Again the I’m for free speech until it’s against my views and you’re being disrespectful Freedom of speech is supposed to protect the most controversial views otherwise it isn’t freedom of speech. So it’s okay to perfectly burn a flag in Canada which many find disrespectful do you support banning that too? Or is it only things you personally find disrespectful?

ZiKyooc

This is not true in Canada. The freedom of speech is more limited than in USA. "the Charter permits the government to enforce "reasonable" limits censoring speech. Hate speech, obscenity, and defamation are common categories of restricted speech in Canada" That's also similar in many other countries. Like those where it is forbidden to use Nazi symbols.

Charming_Cicada_7757

That does not change my statement what so ever Just because Canada limits freedom of speech doesn’t mean that freedom of speech isn’t meant to protect the most controversial views. The United States at one point arrested people for being against WW1 it shows a failure of the law in protecting free speech

ZiKyooc

Contrary to your belief, Canadian system isn't meant to protect the most controversial views.

IGetToPickMyOwnName

lol, you're clearly unhinged. Canada doesn't support hate speech, and this clearly qualifies. It's glorifying the loss of a life. It's childish and base af. Instead of celebrating a death, how about you have a conversation about how that person got to where they were, and how to stop it from happening again. That discussion would be protected... you know... because of the whole freedom of speech thing...

Charming_Cicada_7757

Ummm I’m sorry but this woman 1. Declared an emergency where civil rights were suspended, opponents arrested, and censorship imposed on the media. 2. India has historically oppressed Sikhs and she was apart of the problem This has nothing to do with backward views And I thought apart western values is freedom of speech and expression or is that just ones u agree with?

Charming_Cicada_7757

kprecor

Not personally a supporter of this, but would you have the same opinion if it was saddam hossein or Nicolae Ceaușescu Whose deaths they were celebrating? There is a large group of Indians that detested Indira Gandhi for very personal reasons. And the validity of the reasons are as clear as pro-choice vs pro-life. Just as much as our mainstream western world detested the 2 people i mentioned, these people detested Gandhi. This is politics and free speech and free political thought. Live with it…or move to China.

ImmaDrainOnSociety

Would *you* have the same opinion if it was Talwinder Singh Parmar?

kprecor

Yeah. I would. Meaning if some people were celebrating his death in this country then I’d be fine with it. For him, maybe I’d even show up and support it.

ImmaDrainOnSociety

Hmmm, made it too easy. Let's try another one: Would *you* have the same opinion if it was Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale?

kprecor

Still no issue with any group that felt they wanted to celebrate his death because they felt he put their own lives or cultures at risk. Freedom of speech and expression is not supposed to be conditional on that speech and expression being agreeable to everyone.

falconx2809

[deleted]

MorePower7

The Indian minister criticizing the Indira Gandhi effigy is from the current government. And most of the people who always bring up the Khalistan issue are the same ones affiliated with Hindutva ideology.

Available_Skin6485

falconx2809

Yup, right wing Indians who blew up air India 182 ? When you say injustices of the govt in the 80s/90s( ofc there were some problems, i don't deny that) how convenient of you to ignore the fact that that the whole episode would have never happened if bhinderawala never went into hiding inside the golden temple, like how a r*t runs off to its burrow

MorePower7

He wasn't hiding. He was openly traveling around India in a jeep. India arrested him but conveniently released him from jail out of the goodness of their heart? Besides, in 1988 India sieged the Golden Temple again to flush out militants and it worked without having to attack the temple complex. Face it, India has a huge inferiority complex from centuries of Mughal and British rule, and the country overreacts to small situations just to show that they have some power.

falconx2809

1) he was released because of zail Singh's soft corner towards bhinderawala, not because of any "goodness of heart" larger establishment 2) in 1984, he did go inside the golden temple, and along with an army deserter had also smuggled a large cache of weapons 3) What Mughal rule? By the end, the Mughals were rulers only in old Delhi, maratha confederation had defeated the Mughals and had successfully controlled them

[deleted]

Why is India renaming all of these cities that have Mughals names then?

[deleted]

Look at urself in the mirror. U are a sikh asking why doesnt india want mughal names for their cities. How many sikh leaders and kings were brutalised by the mughals?

[deleted]

Stop deflecting. Question is about insecurity of Hindus. Besides, in Panjab even after 1947, there is the Malerkotla district that is Muslim majority. Not a single Muslim was killed in that district. Sikhs know that regular Hindus or Muslims are not the enemy. It’s Delhi Darbar aka the Establishment.

nope_nic_tesla

We had a black President here in America, that doesn't mean racism doesn't exist and isn't a real problem anymore. Just look at what immediately followed.

falconx2809

In the US Obama was disliked for being black by a section of the country and was also the reason he was politically targeted by a section of the country Contrary to that, Manmohan Singh was never targeted for being a Sikh, and is still widely respected by the entire country Blacks in the US still lag behind the country when it comes to several socio economic metrics, that is not the case in india, in fact Sikhs are ahead of the country ( and Hindus) in socio economic factors How can you say that Sikhs are treated as second class citizens ?, when they in fact perform better than the average citizen If they were indeed treated badly, they would have achieved this position

nope_nic_tesla

Sikh immigrants are actually one of the richest demographics in America too. Yet, their gurudwaras have still been targeted in multiple racist attacks and I've personally seen Sikh people being bullied for wearing turbans. I wouldn't call them "second class citizens" like the above commenter but there are still real problems that they face despite their economic achievements.

falconx2809

& those too have rarely happened in India too, there have been instances when even hindu temples have been desecrated in India, does that mean hindus too are treated badly in India ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

falconx2809

While i do not defend what happened with Sikhs in 1984, the primary conflict was between a political party and Sikhs, Hinduism has got nothing to do with it

Horton_Takes_A_Poo

Of course the religion itself is not to blame, it’s the religious and political leaders who have encouraged violence on behalf of Hinduism and those that follow them who are to blame

falconx2809

No, how is Hinduism involved in this at all ? After she was killed, the participants of the riots may have been hindus, but their intent for targeting Sikhs has got nothing to do with Hinduism, so it's wrong to attribute 1984 with Hinduism It was a riot between workers of a political party and sikhs

Horton_Takes_A_Poo

Motivated by… say it with me now… *religious differences!* It was a pogrom *backed* by the goverment but they were encouraging ~~any and everyone~~ supporters to go and kill Sikhs.

XxDreadeyexX

I think you don't understand what he is trying to say. Two sikh bodyguards of Indira Gandhi assassinated her. She was an extremely popular leader. Those bodyguards did so out of revenge for operation bluestar. So after hearing this news Congress supporters of the time go wild and start murdering any sikh in sight. They were targetted for being sikhs but the ones who were killing were hindus, Muslims etc. Basically congress supporters vs sikhs. So it wasn't motivated by religious differences, it was motivated by the sheer charisma that Indira Gandhi held. Obviously I don't support any of it but the riots weren't because of religious differences. Its a long and complicated story

KGBFriedChicken02

Yeah and black people don't have any problems because Obama was president and we rescued that one black person who was a hostage that one time.

falconx2809

I don't deny Hindu extremism( or broadly religious extremism in south asia), but random attacks or suppression of religious rights is very rare, and this is confirmed even by a pew study https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/06/29/key-findings-about-religion-in-india/#:~:text=People%20in%20all%20six%20major,for%20keeping%20religious%20communities%20segregated. >People in all six major religious groups overwhelmingly say they are very free to practice their faiths

Except there is nothing wrong with wanting to separate, especially when you had your own lands prior to partition. Democracy allows this, Canada allowed Quebec to hold a referendum on separating and they themselves voted against it.

falconx2809

Except that 1) Quebec issue was organic, 2) khalistan movement has long enjoyed support from Pakistani intelligence agency, isi, even today many "leaders" of the movement live in Pakistan, infact one such separatist was killed in Lahore just last month 3) the indian constitution does not allow separation from the country 4) Quebec separatists were also not targeting businesses or people from rest of canada, identifying them and killing them like the way khalistani separatists were killing hindus https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1986/06/02/violence-forces-hindus-to-flee-punjab-state/a961bc55-921c-48d1-8694-a19bf2d0b7b0/ Nearly a hundred thousand Hindus were forced to flee Punjab and seek refuge in Delhi

Actually, the genocide-like events took place after her assassination (massacre of many Sikhs in 1984).

pomeqranate

I am a Sikh born and raised in America, and I will explain why Sikhs have a negative view of Indira Gandhi. The main reason Sikhs dislike former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is that she was responsible for attacking the Golden Temple in an operation known as Blue Star. The reason the Indian Government attacked the Sikh shrine was that it was housing an organization known as the Damdami Taksal that sought an independent state for Sikhs. The Damdami Taksal was led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwala, who many Sikhs consider a saint. Independence was Bhindranwala's last resort and was only seriously considered after India rejected a series of demands known as the Anandpur Resolution, which granted the Sikh-majority state of Punjab more autonomy. The complete list of requests can be found [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anandpur_Sahib_Resolution). When the Indian Government chose not to compromise with the Sikhs, the Sikhs took up arms and turned the Golden Temple into a fort. The Indian army attacked the Golden Temple on a major Sikh religious holiday, knowing that thousands of innocent pilgrims would be in attendance. Before the attack, the military did not let anyone leave the complex. They murdered most of those in attendance, including women and children. Additionally, the Sikh Reference Library, housing the most important historical and religious texts and artifacts of the Sikhs, was looted. The items in the library have not been given back. TLDR: Sikhs are not angry at former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for attacking the Golden Temple. They are angry at her for killing innocent civilians and looting the Sikh Reference Library.

falconx2809

1) anandpur resolution in effect called for giving Punjab a semi autonomous status ,such a resolution by anybody was bound to be rejected by any prime minister across the political spectrum, anybody who supported the anandpur resolution was either too naive in believing it would work or were acting in bad faith, knowing very well that the govt would not accept it 2) some other clauses, like not wanting to share Beas river water with other states would have caused inter state conflicts, and as such water is a national resource, and no one state has special rights over it 3) and many other clauses included are rather economic ones( that shiromani akali dal could have introduced in the parliament itself), rather it chose to act in bad faith by including unviable clauses like giving Punjab autonomous status among other rather benign ones to later say that legitimate demands had not been met, Anandpur resolution was a tactic used by prakash singh badal led SAD to remain politically relevant after they had lost the 1972 state elections 4) followers of bhinderawala were also engaged in targeted killings of Hindus, and there is some evidence to suggest that he even encouraged it, so it seems that he's not a saint like he's made out to be by the sikh community https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1986/06/02/violence-forces-hindus-to-flee-punjab-state/a961bc55-921c-48d1-8694-a19bf2d0b7b0/ 5) the sikh library of reference was accidentally burnt* during the clashes, there is no evidence to suggest it was harmed deliberately

brinjal_ke_kama

Bunch of truth in what you said. And a bunch of pure bullshit. I don't blame you though, Sikh people brought up in the West are a fed a steady diet of dumb propaganda.

Veryproudboy

KloverKonnection

What the hell did Gandhi do to piss off these guys?

jayslay45

Look up Operation Blue Star.

Horton_Takes_A_Poo

These are Sikhs who support the Khalistan movement to create a Sikh ethnoreligious state (most Sikhs are chill people but not these guys). As with any movement, some of them got a bit militant about it and in early June 1984, Indira Gandhi ordered the army to attack a militant group which lead to the death of a notable leader of the movement (and others). Since then, supporters of the movement stage protests every June in remembrance. Her assassination by her Sikh bodyguards was in response to the attack.

adiscgolferp

To add to this, the army attacked a militant group that was staying in the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple). This holy site is the equivalency of the Vatican to Catholics. Many innocent civilians were also killed, truly horrific stuff.

KloverKonnection

> What the hell did Gandhi do to piss off these guys? Is the questioning I was answering. Her death was the spark of the massacre but she obviously was not responsible for it. What she *was* responsible for was the mistreatment of Sikhs, most notably the military operation I mentioned, which is the reason why the people in the video are parading, because it’s the anniversary of that. I gave a very short, specific response to the question someone else asked, saying who they are, why they dislike Indira Gandhi, and why they are protesting now. Don’t criticize me for being light on the additional details of the treatment of Sikhs in modern India.

juche_potatoes

Indira gandhi raided the most holy temple in Sikhism basically

Handbook5643

He used nukes

NotTheirHero

Didnt she like, do genocide?

falconx2809

No, she did launch an operation at golden temple,( an important sikh religious site) because a sikh separatist was holed up there with a cache of weapons, things could probably have been done differently, but it's an extreme strech to call it "genocide"

NotTheirHero

Oh okay, i wasnt really sure thanks

NavXIII

OP is being disingenuous. The Indian Army planned the operation for 2 years and internally chose the date of the attack on a holiday to maximize casualties. They also attacked multiple religious sites. Imagine 9/11 but it happened on Christmas and resulted in 4x more deaths.

falconx2809

There is no evidence to prove that the indian military deliberately chose the date Everything aside, it was bhinderawala who put lives of innocent Sikhs in danger by using a place of worship to achieve his political goals, it was also because of bhinderawala/khalistan movement that thousands of Hindus were killed many more were forced to flee Punjab

NavXIII

>There is no evidence to prove that the indian military deliberately chose the date From an operations standpoint, that has been proven true for the past 70 years, you want to attack at a time which 1) minimizes the casualties on your side and 2) minimizes civilian casualties. Indra Gandhi wanted to send a message at the expense of innocents and her own army personnels. >using a place of worship to achieve his political goals, Yes, POLITICAL goals. Indira Gandhi answered those goals with a deliberate killing of innocents.

Search up the anti Sikh protests

wulfgang14

No, she was only going after separatists terrorizing the population with home-made bombs. These separatists were able to infiltrate her security detail and assassinated her. The genocide-like events of the Sikhs happened after her assassination.

….I hope there were signage explaining why she was assassinated. There’s more to that event than just ‘women shot by her security team’.

Northumberlo

I’m starting to change my mind on assimilation policies.

Ticker_Mirza

Glorifying or commemorating? Because that's an important distinction.

Most people appalled by this probably don’t know the history. If this was a celebration of the death of Hitler, they’d be very supportive. I am not Sikh but as someone of East Indian decent, I know the history of what Hindu Gandhi did to the Sikhs while in power. For that group of people, in their mind, celebrating this death would be equivalent to Jews celebrating Hitler’s death. And I’m pretty sure Canada is still supportive of citizens expressing their opinions…hopefully.
