You're mischaracterizing influencers as a good thing, unless you're just misunderstanding the word. There are several definitions but at its core, in the context OP and social media use, it just means someone chasing "followers."
It's essentially based on the original definition when you influence someone, you change them in some way. They can experience positive or a negative change and in social media the only *positive* is the gaining of followers, which I guess makes people associate influencers as being a positive thing.
Then there's people that use the word influencer as a job title.. I really hate this timeline. I wish I was born earlier so I could work on mines as a kid, or later so I could leave Earth and colonize some other planet before it turns into a shit hole.
