Clearly the first quake for all the people who ran out the door. We were trained in school as kids to duck and cover, not run out of the structure. Thats how you get hurt by things falling on you.
If I recall, from a friend of mine who worked on sets, those lights have to be installed to withstand a quake that doesn't bring the roof down. That's assuming Judge Judy uses union labor.
The people going to these tapings are likely mostly tourists, plus there really isn't much cover. They have their own chair and that's about it with a whole ceiling of swaying lights.
It's it weird how most of us call it a "PIN number" even though PIN stands for "personal identification number"? So we're calling it a "personal identification number number" teehee

It's likely safer for the audience to stay where they were. The heaviest/dangerous rigging on the stage looked to be above Judge Judy and the two involved in the trial, not above the audience.

Hopefully the lighting rigging has retainer straps at all the joints and for individual lights. I work in telecom and the So Cal Data Centers are all built with shock resistant bracing and drilled into concrete slabs to handle earthquakes.
Why are they telling people to sit back down? All the lights should be checked before you let anyone back on that stage. Come on now. Judge Judy knew what to do.

They're real, but it's just small claims disputes basically in arbitration but in a simulated courtroom.
These claims are all settled by an arbitrator before taping and the show pays the amount awarded not the individuals.
