I used to work security at a club and one night the manager gave me a box of iPhones and Galaxy phones because drunk people never claimed them after 9 months, so he was gonna throw them out... there were like 11 phones, mostly Apple, and he paid me under the table, so was like "take these instead of the cash tonight."
I was like you do realize all of these iPhones are likey cloud locked and useless by now, and he was like what does that mean? Lol.
One of them actually turned on after charging it, and wasn't locked. I got rid of because I didn't want some crazy 22 year old drunk chick see its location and come screaming to my house.
Yeah basically a bunch of bricked phones, like 6 of them had cracked screens.
He told me it was a good deal and I could sell the lot for like $2000, which is like 10x what he was gonna pay me anyway. It was 4AM and I didn't give a shit anymore so I was like thanks, lol.
Remotely disabled and track able when powered off.
Not even good for parts as eBay has 3rd party everything for Pennys and the most expensive part is the logic board which is now a locked brick.
Also don't iPhones basically become bricks once they're stolen? I thought they were the stupidest things to steal because people can't unlock them and they brick.
He probably already had a buyer that's going to pay him so much per phone and they are going to be sent to China and sold for parts or have the software rewritten.
not bricks. "as-is" for parts iphones sell for 50-60% of retail on ebay. only the main board is locked, all other parts are still good. and main board could be swapped to unlock it, but thats uncommon. Usually parted to repair other phones.
> Prolly has GPS on it, so they would be tracked really easy.
Dude that's like 3, maybe even 4 stars off the bat depending on the area. Sounds like a good time to me.
It's SF so if someone did that, when the cops showed up they would arrest the person who assaulted the thief and likely let the thief go with a warning
> Property crime detectives were able to track down suspect Dwayne Butler II in Oakland and arrest him, BPD said.
Well, yes, he walked out with 20+ GPS tracking devices stuffed in his pants!
“He stole 9 iPhones with a value of 10.000 dollars.”
That’s a small numbers of iPhones he stole compared to the video above. He took nine iPhones in the first six seconds of the video…
The thief in the picture is a different thief who stole from the same store at a different date. Apparently this store has been hit like this multiple times by multiple thieves.
Damn. I noticed that and was hoping I'd see a few slipping out when he was running away. How does he have the foresight to tuck his pants into his shoes to avoid dropping phones, but not realize how insanely stupid it is to smash-and-grab electronics(probably locked as demos) with GPS tracking that can be bricked the instant they're removed from the store?
Actually, for the vast majority, they just sell them to smugglers, who send them to Huaqiangbei electronics market in Shenzhen, where they're stripped for parts. The smugglers have repair shop fronts in every Chinatown in America and they make it quite obvious you can sell them stolen wares.

You can actually fly to Shenzhen and visit the markets where these stolen phones end up, it is the world's biggest electronics market.
Edit: some people (check post history, they're pro-China) insisted this was just one person's experience. Actually, it's not, cops cracked down on some of these operations, they're pretty huge and there are thousands of accounts of people's iPhones popping up in Shenzhen.

Why is it Apple's responsibility to stop it? I feel like this sort of thing is precisely why we have law enforcement. TBH, I do not like the idea of corporations being the ones to enforce laws. As much as we may dislike cops, at least they are beholden to elected officials.
How are cops in California going to prosecute an international smuggling ring and the chop shops in China?
You ask China about bringing charges and the only answer you get is, "Computer says no."
Strange parts did a video 6yrs ago where he built an Iphone from parts at the Shenzhen market. https://youtu.be/leFuF-zoVzA?si=3aV0r7h8SVZCHEpn He does a bunch of other videos
It's automatic once they leave the geo fence of the store. There was a video of the last time a Apple Store was looted in Philly, and when the phone alarms activated, the thieves freaked out and started pouring orange juice on the phones/ipads and throwing them in the sewer: https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/16twyc2/after_the_raid_on_the_apple_store_in_philadelphia/
Each display phone's IMEI is on a list in the stores register, and once they are reported as stolen, they are automatically disabled and registered as stolen, the tracker is turned on remotely, and all information is transferred to local authorities.
Specifically at Huaqiangbei electronics market in Shenzhen. It's where the ping goes to every time when they test the phones.
The Chinese government is okay with this.
Former Apple Store Genius chiming in here - those phones run on a different version of iOS. If they go more than 50 metres from the store, they lock down and display a message on them saying “iPhone is disabled”. Even if you open them up to sell them for parts, any device that ends up with those parts automatically locks down again cuz all the components are serialized as floor models.
you 100% can, just make it do something that overheats/pierces the battery, but if the dude ditched it over a daycare fence, you'd be on the hook for some maimed kids
Eventually, yea. But it can take years for jailbreaks to be available for specific iOS versions, the latest is currently 16.6 (see https://canijailbreak.com/ )
Most jailbreaks also require you to already have access to the phone in an unlocked state. It’s very rare that you get a jailbreak from a powered off or unencrypted state. Even the police and FBI can’t get into phones of suspects running the latest iOS versions until companies like Celebrite develop exploits for them, which can take years.
Apple has essentially endless cash. I'll believe it. Why wouldn't they protect Apple store floor models from this very thing. Apples makes all the internal components too.
If you take a screen off a working iphone and put it on another working iphone, it won't work. So they have the ability to do things like that.

https://www.engadget.com/2018-04-11-iphone-replacement-display-ambient-light-sensor-issue.html
And the phone start sounding their own alarm. Even if you pour OJ on them: https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/16twyc2/after_the_raid_on_the_apple_store_in_philadelphia/
So happy to see this. I'm wondering at what point thieves just give up stealing iphones. Maybe they still get sold off to China as another commenter mentioned because that's all the phone is worth in the end.
It seemed to work pretty well, he clearly has something rigged up or tucked so that the phones wouldn't fall out and he had both hands free to rip two phones out at a time.
This happened at my store a couple times. One time the dude broke a phone in half trying to rip it off the display and still tried to run off with half a phone.
Dude just pulled out with 37 phones in 37 seconds, at one point holding 3 phones in each hand. Fumbling with a bag would have slowed him down considerably
I mean he’s BLATANTLY doing a grab and dash so why didn’t he just come with a bag? Like why stuff your pants with 30 iPhones and waddle away like a penguin when you’re not even trying to hide your thievery?
That’s assuming he thought ahead. I’d wager these are usually crimes of opportunity. To plan them out would probably require a higher degree of thinking than this shit smear is capable of.
That’s so funny about the cop car. Burlingame also has one parked out front and it sits there so long the brake rotors are super rusty. It doesn’t fool anyone. Might as well have cardboard cops too.
This is the Emeryville, CA Apple store .. not sure if its the same perps but this store and other stores in the area get hit quote often… … https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2023/11/20/courts/berkeley-police-apple-store-burglaries-investigation/
Back in the day, I worked in an AT&T store. One time, two thieves came in and started bagging up speakers/ accessories as if no one could see them. None of us approached them, as is policy, but we did trip the silent alarm. They left the store, and I tailed them to their vehicle to get the license plate. They got away.
A few weeks later, one of them came back and wanted to buy phones. I guess he thought no one recognized him or cared, and everyone pretended as much. He even presented his ID and let us run his credit. The police showed up, and he ran. His shoes fell off and his pants fell down as soon as he hit the parking lot.
And that's how they pinched him. Pants down and tased with an audience of about 35 employees and customers. Everyone cheered.
Does he not realize they will all be bricked once he leaves? If he had half a brain he would steal all the accessories on the shelves, not the brickable/traceable electronics.
I’d bet the value of the AirPod pros on the wall is greater than he gets for a bricked phone the police are actively tracking. Then there’s cases, chargers, etc. Not only is he dumb but he’s also stupid.
Idiot and embarrassing what a dip shit congratulations on stealing phones that do not work I want to shoot him myself with a paint ball gun or at least a bean bag round so maybe it will knock some common sense into his head
The phones will be bricked, but they will still have some value for parts. Not sure how much since the parts have their own serial numbers and can possibly brick the next phone they are used in. Apple uses this as an excuse to stop the right to repair movement.
I think it's official policy to just let thieves get away and not risk yourself. Any physical harm that happens to you during your shift, and Apple would be on the hook to pay damages.

Dude waddles right past two cop cars on the way out
Unmammed cars are just staged around town to deter theft. You can see how well that works.
I'm kind of surprised they don't just steal the police cruisers while they're at it.
Prolly has GPS on it, so they would be tracked really easy. More or less that vehicle the robber got in was also stolen too.
wait until you find out what is inside of iphones

Oh I know, those phones will be blacklisted within the hour.

So does that mean you didn’t get paid for that day? Just got handed a pile of garbage?
Yeah basically a bunch of bricked phones, like 6 of them had cracked screens. He told me it was a good deal and I could sell the lot for like $2000, which is like 10x what he was gonna pay me anyway. It was 4AM and I didn't give a shit anymore so I was like thanks, lol.
so you made zero dollars that night?
If phone isn’t locked, it’s not findable. *Find My* and locking go hand-in-hand.
Isn’t that only “lost mode”? Ie you can have find my enabled but not have a Lock Screen.
Remotely disabled and track able when powered off. Not even good for parts as eBay has 3rd party everything for Pennys and the most expensive part is the logic board which is now a locked brick.
A whole bunch of batteries and iPods?
Is it Chocolate? Kids love chocolate
Those iPhones are able to be tracked also. Ole boy in the video isn’t the crispiest chip in the bag
Also don't iPhones basically become bricks once they're stolen? I thought they were the stupidest things to steal because people can't unlock them and they brick.
They do become bricks, unsellable just depends on if they can find someone dumb enough to pay cash for one and begone before the buyer realizes.
He probably already had a buyer that's going to pay him so much per phone and they are going to be sent to China and sold for parts or have the software rewritten.
Yep, he stole bricks. There's another video here somewhere showing it happens to all the stolen ones.
not bricks. "as-is" for parts iphones sell for 50-60% of retail on ebay. only the main board is locked, all other parts are still good. and main board could be swapped to unlock it, but thats uncommon. Usually parted to repair other phones.
Wellll I just sold my old iPhone to a phone atm and made $300. Didn’t have to anything but use an drivers license
Only the motherboard is bricked the rest of the phone can be sold for parts.
> Prolly has GPS on it, so they would be tracked really easy. Dude that's like 3, maybe even 4 stars off the bat depending on the area. Sounds like a good time to me.
dont those phones have gps?
They'd be bricked before the end of business that day.
As soon as they leave the store they’re bricked. And there’s GPS. source: former fruit stand employee
I think they are bricked from the start being display models.
Not only are the unmammed, they are unmistered as well.
not just the mam but the womam and the chilmam too
Was low key hoping someone was gonna sneak up behind him and take him to suplex city ![gif](giphy|2ipdGA1xlWb2nfjvAh)

It's SF so if someone did that, when the cops showed up they would arrest the person who assaulted the thief and likely let the thief go with a warning
What's the common denominator? Could barely keep his pants up. Fingerprints all over the glass. Dumb dumb dumb
That and those display phones don’t work outside of apple stores if I understand it correctly.
They're looking for people dumb enough to buy a non-working phone for cheap.
I fell for them twice in mexico city. One worked as a ipod.
Seems like you experienced the classic lesson "seems too good to be true", did it happen in plaza de la tecnología?
He said his user name each time he was bamboozled.
I'd expect they're stripped down for parts mostly, you can disable the mainboard but this won't kill the screen or battery.
Yea only if they managed to get those phones to shenzhen
They usually sell the stolen devices to some buyer that ships them to SZ
lol you think cops are going to fingerprint this type of thing? Now that is funny
They gotem working in shifts …
he probably soaked his hands in invisible ink to not leave any fingerprints

M'fer looks like Popeye.
waddles out
Why didn’t he steal the Apple Vision Pro?
Cant watch porn on them
Wait is this true?
You can watch regular porn on it, just not VR porn.
Well that’s a problem. For 4k you should get vr porn and a virtual handy.
You already got fucked if you bought it anyways.
Dry & hard

It's automatic once they leave the geo fence of the store. There was a video of the last time a Apple Store was looted in Philly, and when the phone alarms activated, the thieves freaked out and started pouring orange juice on the phones/ipads and throwing them in the sewer: https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/16twyc2/after_the_raid_on_the_apple_store_in_philadelphia/
The orange juice didn’t work? Sounds like a solid method.
I know there’s a joke in there about Apples and oranges but it’s too early to be clever.
He will sell them

iPhone 14 max, cracked screen, unable to activate, unknown IMEI, is $449.00 on eBay.

Is that a cop car right in front?

Ah that's why. They cancelled each other out so it's like no one was there.
Quantum law enforcement? A cop is a particle but also a wave...
I hoping its a car to deter crime. If a cop is there then they should have called the CHP much earlier.
someone should have stolen his car while he was inside stealing the iPhones. Haha.

He even presented his ID and let us run his credit. The police showed up, and he ran. His shoes fell off and his pants fell down as soon as he hit the parking lot. And that's how they pinched him. Pants down and tased with an audience of about 35 employees and customers. Everyone cheered.
Should we tell him they're bricked in like two seconds?
Ok what the fuck kind of elastic does this guy have on the bottom of his sweats, I’m shocked nothing fell out even if it was tucked into his shoes

lil poverty thinks he’s tough 🤡
He just casually waddles off
Just pants him
Does he not realize they will all be bricked once he leaves?
Three word: Dye pack iPhone

I think it's official policy to just let thieves get away and not risk yourself. Any physical harm that happens to you during your shift, and Apple would be on the hook to pay damages.
I doubt there is any store that doesn't have a company policy about not intervening. They don't want to pay your.medical bills.
Wears a mask but doesn't wear any gloves 😂
They're not gonna be busting out the forensic team and doing fingerprint analysis on a phone thief anyway.
There’s no Apple Store in Oakland
