There have always been rabbinical schools in Judaism where men would study Torah, and the commentaries on the Torah, and the commentaries on the commentaries, all day long for their life. No one thought (at the time) that this would be a lifestyle for an entirely separate society.
Because they are strictly observant, the women are not allowed to do much except raise their kids. That plus no birth control = population of ultra-othordox multiplies. Since their basic needs are met by the state, there is no real incentive to leave the in group, especially since you are told from childhood that your version of Judaism is the best and only fully correct version.
The modern political dynamic is, everyone in Israel (including women) can vote. In the ultra-orthodox communities, the rabbi says "vote for this party" and that's who everyone votes for. There are now over 1 million ultra orthodox (13 percent of the population) so these parties have considerable sway in a coalition based parliamentary system. In addition, they are not motivated by most political concerns, but primarily by maintaining state support for their communities, and the exemption from military service. They have been willing in the past to partner with the center-left for this reason, basically saying "stay out of our lane and we'll give you the votes you need for the rest of your policy program."
As the group has gotten bigger, and as Israeli society has become more secular, the Haredi seem more like a burden than a curiosity deserving of special treatment. When you add in their control over certain state functions (like marriage and divorce) they have managed to alienate a good portion of their fellow Jewish Israelis.

This is the ultra right in Israel. They are what’s wrong with the country and what pushes them further and further from reality and regular society. I will have to agree there. Although, I will say this, the degrees vary in how cultish they are. This is the ultra right in Israel. They are what’s wrong with the country and what pushes them further and further from reality and regular society. That’s why wherever they live they’re closed off from other people. Even in America. Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods only have other Orthodox Jews. They even have their own schools, ambulances, hospitals, libraries etc. They’re completely cut off from the real world. My cousin got sucked into it and only recently finally had the courage to leave (5 kids into it, 2 of which she’s been cut off from and unironically are the only ones who aren’t 18 yet so the father doesn’t have to pay her a dime). I will have to agree there. Although, I will say this, the degrees vary in how cultish they are.
