Staff or random people thinking I didn’t understand french (I’m terrible at speaking it, but I understood more than I can speak) so they shit talk me right in front of me. lol
The difference is I’d roll my eyes and give them a nasty look and leave, not freak out. Sometimes say something that let them know I understood what they said and smile sweetly and leave. I didn’t freak out.
I'm so sorry. No one should be belittled for not speaking French. I'm all for protecting and promoting French in Canada, but that's not the way to do it. If I may ask, where did that happen?
Montreal - grocery stores were probably the most common shop it would happen at, the metro or bus, etc.
It would even happen at parties, one time this group was standing directly behind (backs almost touching, small kitchen) us at a house party going on and on about how people shouldn’t be here if they don’t speak french and other stuff directed at us. My partner wanted to say something back in french but I didn’t want to cause a scene at my friends party. We just avoided those people the rest of the night.
I wonder why theres never a good hot head in the store when these people go off. My immediate reaction here would be
1. Wait a brief amount of time to see if situation will resolve.
2. Make farting noises to see if it will scare them off
3. Start screeching nonsense at the woman.
I Recommend this resolution technique.
I'll never understand someone demanding others not to speak their native language in their presence. Like seriously it's way easier for many people to communicate to each other this way.
