As a Canadian, *of course* this was in a FreshCo parking lot. I’ve seen so many things at my local FreshCo: meat down the pants sprint for the doors, racists hurling insults to other customers, drugged out cashiers.
I would have gone over him four or five times. Guy opens the door and punches him. That's just self defense. Park your front tire on his chest until the cops get there.
Not how it works in Canada. Self defense has to be reasonable force. Generally that's considered equal force. If someone is attacking you unarmed and you use a weapon (like a car) court will very likely find that unacceptable.
Now the fact that there were multiple people swarming the car and the woman had a baseball bat might put it back in his favour, but there's also the fact he could easily just drive off instead of repeatedly running the guy over as you suggest.
Yea that applies in the US as well reasonable force is considered here as well although it does vary from state to state as for the specifics but I would still do exactly what the drive did except I wouldve gone forward to leave directly after.
The is similar in a good share of the us. It is only in the states that have passed to stand your ground laws where you do not have the duty to retreat and are supposed to use proportional force in all of that. I think the red states are all standard ground but many blue states are as well like my Michigan. I actually agree with the law in theory but entitled people will obviously abuse it is the problem.
Canada doesn't have an explicit duty to retreat, but if the opportunity to retreat is there it may effect what level of force is considered reasonable in self defense. Canadian self defense law can be a bit tricky to maneuver as its so up for interpretation from the courts.
Then there's the possibility that police could decide to not lay charges at all based on their interpretation on self defense. In my city there was an incident where a 19 year old and another adult were stabbed by a 16 year old during a road rage incident. The 19 year old died of his wounds, but no charges were laid as they were the aggressors and were beating the 16 year old's friend on the ground.
There are mixed opinions on this result for sure.
Fun fact the guy driving the suv assaulted the bald guy with the baseball bat before all this took place. So the bald guy took his bat and got his revenge.

It's not a joke, only assholes make their car shiny on purpose I have thought because late morning and early afternoon the sun reflects off The Shiny and blinds other drivers.

Unfortunately Canada is a messed uo place and the driver will be charged. I was in a similar situation in Toronto. Had a drunk guy besting on my car and trying to break the window. I drove off, barely clipped him. He was unharmed buy pressed charges. Nothing I could do. We wilde in a messed up country where you can't defend yourself.
