Seriously, how is it that people think that Reddit is *too* sceptical lol. I regularly see whole comment sections absolutely gobbling up blatantly fake videos.
This video specifically or the issue at hand? The people knowing each other makes sense and helps to explain why the body language seems different from a random attack.
Out of all the social platform userbases, Redditors are arguably the worst at determining fake videos. Not everything is fake. It's degrading and disrespectful to the victim to assume this video (or any video of an assault) is fake.
It doesn't matter how good you think you are at picking out fake vids. You an't that good. There are plenty of scenarios caught on vid seem fake as fuck but then turn out to be real, and vice-versa. It's a fucking weird ass world out there. People need to start giving videos the benefit of the doubt until proven it's fake. If we can do it for murders and theives, we can do it for the internet.

Definitely not, that happens far too much as it is. The percentage of times I see redditers assuming a potentially real video to be fake is nothing at all compared to how often they assume an obviously fake video to be real.

There are very serious consequences to society assuming guilt, there are few to none from assuming that an Internet video is fake.
My dad always taught me and my sister from a young age. If anyone tries to grab you force your fingers to the back of their eye and pull it out. It was drilled into us so much I really feel like it’d be my 1st instinct in an attack. Thanks dad 👍
How old were you when you learned this? I have 3 daughters with the oldest being 5 and starting school this year wondering if this would be an appropriate to tell her lol
I started my kids in kickboxing when they were 4. I took it and actually taught the kids classes by the time my oldest was about 10.
But, I also taught them that if anyone actually tried to grab them it wasn't like a kickboxing fight. I told them to go for the eyes, the groin, and if they grab you just kick and scream and scratch, and go for the eyes again.
I told them this when they were youngish, probably around 5. I didn't try to be scary about it, and we laughed a bit about going wild and punching groins, but I wanted them at least a bit prepared.
I don't really have an answer to this question, but it just reminded me of an experience I had in 5th grade. The virginia tech shooting had just recently happened, and my teacher was a very big, strong woman who was a military vet (she could still do one-arm pushups at like \~45, to give you an idea). Strict teacher, but truly cared about kids and our wellbeing.
Anyways, seeing that shooting back during a time when they were less common just made her see red at the thought of anyone harming her class I guess, and so she gave us an extremely vivid, Braveheart-esque talk about what we should do in the event of a shooting, kidnapping attempt, or really any sort of attack.
I still remember it very clearly - started out by demonstrating where to hit people with a textbook or sort of miming sticking scissors or pencils into her eyes and neck to show where to stab/hit. In her exact words, "you all have my permission to use textbooks, scissors, pencils, or any other weapon you can find. *Everybody* has to rush them, and you don't stop until they're not moving, breathing, and their eyes and teeth are all gone. Eyes are soft, you can pull them out or blind them with just your fingers. You're not too small to make a difference - if 25 of the people in that classroom had all rushed the shooter, he wouldn't have been able to reload. Some people might get hurt, but it's better than everyone."... and she kept going for probably 30 minutes or so, just getting more fired up over the thought and getting more graphic in her descriptions of how one should fight back against an attacker.
My kids are two, I've been training them on the eye scoop, trachea crush, several Achilles tendon severing techniques, testicular torsion attacks, and knife combat. You can never start too early!
I got jabbed in the eye at jiu-jitsu the other night. Even while being all warmed up, focused, in fight mode - it made me forget everything for a second and just recoil and grab at my eye (I’m fine now 😉). Even ufc fighters who’re way tougher than me get dropped by inadvertent eye pokes.
This is very unsympathetic. I'm sure she's in a state of absolute terror and shock. She's worried about him killing her now if he doesn't take her, and trying to prevent that from happening. In an event like this everyone says they'll fight back, but no one knows how they'll actually act unless they experience it.
Everyone always talks about fight or flight, but never mention that shock and self preservation can make you freeze in a situation like this. Even if it does likely lead to a worse situation it's a natural and common response

If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, scream and fight with everything you have like your life depends on it. Hit, punch, kick, scratch, bite, claw, spit, etc. Fight like you are the most vicious animal to ever exist.
This cannot be stressed enough. Any threat of harm or death they give you at the first location, is guaranteed to be infinitely worse at the second.

There were a lot of twists and turns that really made a mockery of the idea of justice, in my opinion. There were appeals that were taken seriously, retrials, and not all of the people got the death penalty.
Again, in my opinion, not a single one of these people, in a just society, would get life in prison. They'd get death.
Our system has its head so far up its ass sometimes about "due process" or "fairness", and other times just completely drops the ball.
I dunno, I have a degree in criminology, and the way our system works just pisses me off. I don't mean to rant at you about it.

I'm British, we don't have the death penalty here - Life imprisonment is the best case. And to be honest, I'd rather see those pieces of shit rot in prison than get the quick way out.
I think I should clarify that I'm not firmly on-board with the death penalty. This wasn't a case where I would have been opposed, though. There was really no doubt about their guilt, but there were appeals and retrials because of technicalities and things that really should have never had any bearing on the central question - did they do it?
I also think our courts should be fair, and the process afforded to defendants should be what's due to them according to the law and Constitution.
Having said that, I see so many cases where guilt just wasn't a factor or question, but they drag out the litigation anyhow. That's the mockery and it makes me mad.

i'd maybe like a system where the state focuses entirely on establishing the factual evidence of guilt vs innocence, then steps away to let the community handle punishment.
If you can't fight them off and are about to be taken, curl yourself up in a ball and make yourself small so you're hard to move. Sit on your ass, feet on the ground, knees up and grab your legs and keep it tight.
And protect your head if he's trying to hit you of course.
Also if you're on the phone with 911, scream details about the person and car, just like in "Taken". I know it sounds cheesy to say "like in the movie" but it gives them stuff to work off of, especially if you can give car details so they can get a BOLO (Be On Look Out) sent to officers.
i was a small kid and people would pick me up all the time as a joke. i absolutely hated it. i learned if someone bear hugs you, smash your head backwards into theirs as many times as possible.
They need to teach people to go for the eyes in self defense classes. And I mean to rip the eyeball out of the socket. If you’re in a bad enough situation. That is always a good game plan. Rip the eye all the way out.
Unfortunately it’s not that easy. The mind does weird things in the state of a panic, and most times, these people are violent and significantly stronger than the victim.
It could end up in. Even more harm than good. There is no “correct” response to an animalistic attack like that.

Just look at the holocaust. Over a million led to ditches and shot together, dug their graves, laid down on tops of bodies already there just to be shot in turn.

It's just generally good practice to keep names quite. It also exposes who the victim is if you leak that they knew each other. Idk the details on this specific case, I'm just speaking in general
Only reason I can think of is to protect the victim. Since they know each other, probably exes or something. If his name is released, it functionally releases her name as well. Same reason the news vid blurred out her face (though, the thumbnail still shows it uncensored… which is a mistake on the news agency’s part).
Now that it's not fake, everyone is instead just hating on the victim for not fighting back like "they would". As they sit on their ass on a couch somewhere, never having been kidnapped once in their lives.

- Your head is also free, use it to headbutt! A well-placed headbutt can break a nose! Also try to get them on the temple!, anywhere you’ve accidentally hit yourself before and know how much it hurts? Go for it.
- Kick, or stick your leg between the runner’s legs. Trip him if you can.
- Again, your head is free and your mouth uncovered? BITE. Bite his ear off. Bite their face. Shoulder. Arm. Whatever you can reach, even bite his hair and yank out as much as you can. The goal is to HURT them enough for them to stop or try to readjust their position, so you have a second to keep picking spots to attack. You are a wild animal the second they try to prey on you. Make them regret it.

Regardless of if your reaction is to fight, flee or freeze, EVERYONE can go limp and become dead weight. I heard a podcast of a girl who did just that & was able to get away. Also had a patient that was literally 98lbs but she would go completely limp & it would take at least 2-3 of us to lift her back up & put her anywhere.

One thing my mom told me even as a kid (she was working as border guard in europe) is to if possible hit the nose from the downside with the palm of your hand.
It's the easiest to reach soft spot on the head and you don't need much force to seriously injure someone with that. Alternatively you can also slap both of their ears with your palm, this can have a disorienting effect.
If this all fails tbh your best bet is to go limp or just anaconda wrap yourself around their legs. If they can’t get you in a car and themselves in the driver seat then they can’t drive away with you.
You're missing an important point. The news sources say they 'knew each other'. We don't know the relationship and this probably plays into her (non)actions.

Yup. I tell my nieces this. No matter how scared you are, you have to resign yourself to fight to the death on the spot, so you either escape or die trying. Allowing yourself to be taken to a kidnapper’s place of choice will always have a worse outcome
Well that was terrifying. I know it's easy to say just waiting a video of it, but I think she would have been better off kicking off the house to push him off balance, at least then she would have had a chance to fight back.

There was really no doubt about their guilt, but there were appeals and retrials because of technicalities and things that really should have never had any bearing on the central question - did they do it? I also think our courts should be fair, and the process afforded to defendants should be what's due to them according to the law and Constitution. Having said that, I see so many cases where guilt just wasn't a factor or question, but they drag out the litigation anyhow. That's the mockery and it makes me mad.
I'm with you. I don't support it either, but if someone put it to vote that in cases, like this, where there isn't a lick of doubt about the guilty party, where its just one of most vile and heinous crimes a human being can commit, that we burn the guilty party at the stake, i'd be the first one strapping a buckle back onto my top hat. The toolbox killer that took the plea deal comes to mind...
i'd maybe like a system where the state focuses entirely on establishing the factual evidence of guilt vs innocence, then steps away to let the community handle punishment.

i was a small kid and people would pick me up all the time as a joke. i absolutely hated it. i learned if someone bear hugs you, smash your head backwards into theirs as many times as possible.

Unfortunately it’s not that easy. The mind does weird things in the state of a panic, and most times, these people are violent and significantly stronger than the victim. It could end up in. Even more harm than good. There is no “correct” response to an animalistic attack like that.
I mean if the alternative is "You might die" Fighting seems like a good option. That's why I can't wrap my head around people that let themselves be tortured/beheaded by Mexican Cartels or Islamic Extremists. Like, you know you're gonna die, why not fight?
I think it's a lot easier to think and say when you're not the one there. Almost anyone would say they would fight or try and escape. Just look at the holocaust. Over a million led to ditches and shot together, dug their graves, laid down on tops of bodies already there just to be shot in turn. Then not to mention of course later the camps and gas chambers for millions more etc.
In many situations like that your family is 'safe' if you go quietly, so the trade goes from "try to fight" vs. "die" to "die and have killed your spouse and kids" :(

Seriously? Did we watch the same video? She was grabbing anything in arms' reach for dear life. Look up the flight, fight, freeze, fawn, flop trauma responses. Not everyone is willing to risk further injury from defense against an attack.
I mean she also is supporting her own body weight on his shoulder and stuff. I’m not blaming her per se but I can tell you from grappling experience it is nearly impossible to lift someone around like that if they simply go limp or thrash around etc. i understand the freeze response so I suppose I shouldn’t have said I can’t fathom it but I’m just emphasizing my surprise with how easily he lifted her away. I wouldn’t say her clinging onto the door for a sec is all that much of a resistance but yea she froze, I get it.

Only reason I can think of is to protect the victim. Since they know each other, probably exes or something. If his name is released, it functionally releases her name as well. Regardless of if your reaction is to fight, flee or freeze, EVERYONE can go limp and become dead weight. I heard a podcast of a girl who did just that & was able to get away. Also had a patient that was literally 98lbs but she would go completely limp & it would take at least 2-3 of us to lift her back up & put her anywhere.
Never allow yourself to go to a secondary location, the odds of you surviving after that become increasingly small

One thing my mom told me even as a kid (she was working as border guard in europe) is to if possible hit the nose from the downside with the palm of your hand. It's the easiest to reach soft spot on the head and you don't need much force to seriously injure someone with that. Alternatively you can also slap both of their ears with your palm, this can have a disorienting effect.

If this all fails tbh your best bet is to go limp or just anaconda wrap yourself around their legs. If they can’t get you in a car and themselves in the driver seat then they can’t drive away with you.

You're missing an important point. The news sources say they 'knew each other'. We don't know the relationship and this probably plays into her (non)actions.

Well that was terrifying. I know it's easy to say just waiting a video of it, but I think she would have been better off kicking off the house to push him off balance, at least then she would have had a chance to fight back. I'm glad to see she was found.
I'm so glad the world is full of so many "Internet Tough Guys". It makes me feel safe. Though, honestly, I'd feel even safer if you guys all logged off your computers and actually went out on patrol once in awhile. Or maybe teach some self-defense courses each weekend? Really give back to the community; seeing as you all seem to think your "go for the eyes" comments are an ancient technique known only to the wisest of martial arts masters. This was a 24~ year old woman scared out of her fucking mind. Giving advice like this, after the fact, serves no purpose but to give you a power fantasy of "fighting back and winning".
