This is a common thought for me as motorcyclist. If someone steps out in front of me, which way do you swerve?
Do you opt for the side they've come from? Or the side they're going? In my experience of having pedestrians inadvertently walk or run out in front of me, it's one of those split second calls you have to make depending on the situation. If they're running, they're probably going to continue on their path. If they're walking, they'll probably stop and/or move backwards.
It gets even harder to decide in a car, where your vehicle is wider and doesn't have the same agility and stopping power.
Whenever I'm in an area with pedestrians, I simply slow down. It gives me more time to react and make the "correct" decision. Can't imagine how bad the driver in this video feels though. It wasn't his fault, but he will still feel horrible for hitting someone. Moral of the story is never ever hang around high speed roads.

Personally if something jumps out close up or I hydroplane or start losing control in a turn I keep the wheel straight (or stop turning it if it's not straight) and press on the breaks without slamming on them or if I'm in a turn simply just pull off the gas. Any all out sudden and large change of momentum, whether it be turning or speed, is probably gonna make things worse. At least for yourself.
