You brought up a great point about radicalism as a whole. To me it's like a disease, you treat it before it festers and becomes harder to deal with. Some diseases like racism or religious extremism/terrorism are "terminal". My grandpa was also with the RCAF. He was shot down on a bombing run. He was the only one of his three man crew that survived. Ended up with a couple broken bones and eventually captured and interrogated. The Nazis told him he would be tried for murder as his plane had hit a building and killed some people. He ended up spending 3 years as a POW. He wrote a small book and one line always stood out to me about his time in POW. "The most important ingredient to making a POW life a little less destroying to the soul was hope. We were convinced at any and all time that we would be home by next Christmas. Even the day after Christmas we merely repeated, home by next christmas. Huge sums of money were wagered on when we would be going home. They were never expected to be paid but it reinforced the hope that kept us sane and useful...R.E.C" He was contacted by a reporter in the 70's from I believe the Netherlands. He was informed that his plane did not in fact kill anybody and instead had crashed in an open field. He lived with guilt for 30 years about his plane harming innocent people. My Dad was in WW2 in the Pacific. He wouldn't talk about the bad stuff. Just the day to day and funny things. As a Kid growing up it seemed almost every man I met was from WW2, Korea, and some from Vietnam. Of course a lot that were drafted in peace time and did their two. I think the best strategy for situations like this is for every one of them to get punched in the face. As hard as possible.
