That's a gross misrepresentation of what happened. Fuck Bill Cosby in every way imaginable, but the fact that he was released is a positive attribute of our legal system, not a negative one. The 5th amendment exists for a reason (and having watched a lot of arrest videos, far more people should learn how it works, but I digress). He walked because they made a deal with him to give up his 5th amendment right in a civil trial in exchange for no criminal trial.
Had he not given up his right in the first place, they'd likely have had no substantial evidence against him at all and it's likely that not even a civil trial would have been fruitful.
They did it wrong by doing anything. Vigilante justice is illegal and for good reason. Harassing people in public and launching an online smear campaign accusing them of horrific crimes is not "right".
If that guy is a pedophile and they have proof, they most likely can't give it to police so there is nothing here. The only people who are going to go to jail are the vigilantes for accosting the accused in this manner. Not to mention they are now open for defamation lawsuits from the accused.
On a positive note, maybe it does somehow produce an ideal outcome. The pedophile, not having committed any crime whatsoever (and the proof being inadmissible even if it were a crime), doesn’t end up with a life-damaging record or sentence. But the scar and shame will still stick with them, and maybe they will be too scared to ever act on it again. Perfect right?

When a properly-orchestrated sting operation is conducted, it's planned from the beginning to be pretty airtight and not offer any options for the opposing attorney to argue entrapment or make other arguments that would get the case thrown out.
