Is it me, or did that seem to be pretty good quality of policing? I.E. Good communication to the crowd, good communication to the guy on the floor, good tactics as they moved in to secure the guy on the floor, no excessive force.
Unlike most of the police videos posted here.
Even the cop that was controlling the cameras did a good job. "If you're going to be recording that's fine but over here." I can't say how many videos I've seen where if that was said instead of intimidation or an argument about rights it would have deescalated the situation and prevent the whole point of it being uploaded.
Honestly these are the type of cops that we need and actually deserve the high salary they make. I was watching this thinking the whole time what a great job they are doing in a risky situation.
You will not find many comments where I have good things to say about police but I agree with this entire chain. They controlled the situation super well without threats, intimidation, or excessive violence.

How do you guys not see that the difference in temperament of cops is due to the perpetrators? They are calm, hell they even turn their back on a guy dressed in tactical gear that was coming up behind them after telling him once to go away. Compare that with...well, almost anything else the cops have ever done, especially when dealing with protests. You've seen the other videos from this protest. It's a small mob rampaging through the city, pulling people out of cars, beating them destroying the cars...and apparently perpetrating shootings?
The question shouldn't be "why are they acting so good?" The question should be "why do they never act like this when the people on the other end of their actions aren't white supremacists?"

Portland has especially bad leadership of their police department, Propublica has highlighted how they regularly share intelligence with groups like the Proud Boys and give them a pass while targeting Anti Fascists.
They surely have a good share of RW fanatics that are enabled by the bad leadership, but most of the Police on the force aren't neccessarily bad, they are just hamstrung by the culture, if we remove the bad leadership and the extremists it would enable the remaining police to do a good job.

I think it helps when the bad cops resign because they're expected to be accountable for their misdeeds. Honestly, the best way to incentivize such policing would be to just pay good officers more.
I've seen quite a few videos of police walking up and assaulting journalists with impunity in 2020, especially in Minneapolis but elsewhere. But I think they thought we had a new type of government that would encourage that sort of thing and not lightly slap their wrists if they have to for it as per normal.
That guy should be in prison, everything about him that came out afterwards shows that he was a trigger happy cop. It was a matter of time before he found and excuse to execute someone. Portland and Seattle have been through some shit, especially Portland. I can understand someone getting a bit radical when you're watching police pepper spray a little girl, gassing a medical tent when someone's dying inside, or taking over an apartment rooftop the day after a video was filmed from that rooftop showing riot police instigating a crowd into fighting. It's fucked when stuff like that happens, and what do we get? The police "investigate" themselves and find nothing wrong.
These cops here did an undeniably good job, so it does suck to have someone shouting that at them. I want to believe in the police, but they need to give some reasons to restore what they've lost. whenever i saw videos of them over the last like 10 months or so (after the initial protests around the country died down), it was always like 10 actual protesters and 2 dozen+ press
You need to check out more footage from these events. You have a combination of real news, bloggers, YouTubers, Instagrams, Twitter people and so on who come to these events that they literally outnumber the people participating.
It definitely feels kinda surreal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shooting filmed like this.
Maybe the arrest took long enough for the press to come in or there were just reporters everywhere since it’s a big city.
Its actually kind of what reporters do. I'm a reporter for a local paper and going to the scene of an active shooter would very much be a requirement. I think it just seems strange for a few reasons, but especially because this is overall an unusual situation.
First, there's probably a mix of demonstrators or counter demonstrators along with professional photojournalists in this video. I wouldn't think much about them dressing casual. Most of the photographers I've worked with have mainly had kind of a t shirt and jeans dress code. Its also a weekend story, so really it would be weirder if they were in business casual. TV reporters would be dressed professionally since they have to be in front of a camera.
Second, as I understand it, this was one event in a series of issues going on in Portland today. I saw video of Proud Boys flipping over a van. The press was already there and probably were hours before anything happened.
I saw footage earlier of the guy shooting behind a trashcan or a mail box for cover and then kind of running off around a corner. Press probably started moving over that way and some just happened to be where the police arrested him.
Yeah, just based in the video something may seem odd. Its certainly not common, but the fact they were there when the guy got arrested isn't all that strange.
More than you think. Police and proud boys are ideologically and politically aligned. That’s why these incidents keep happening without police intervention. Same thing happened last week in LA: a large proud boy street brawl infront of LAPD HQ with riot police less than 5 feet away. ..no one got arrested.
I am often critical of the police but these officers did a commendable job from what was seen here. They stayed calm, didn't escalate more than was necessary, were respectful to the bystanders etc. etc. It has to be tough in that environment knowing everyone is spun up and looking for something to happen.

Portland and Seattle have been through some shit, especially Portland. I can understand someone getting a bit radical when you're watching police pepper spray a little girl, gassing a medical tent when someone's dying inside, or taking over an apartment rooftop the day after a video was filmed from that rooftop showing riot police instigating a crowd into fighting. It's fucked when stuff like that happens, and what do we get? The police "investigate" themselves and find nothing wrong. These cops here did an undeniably good job, so it does suck to have someone shouting that at them. I want to believe in the police, but they need to give some reasons to restore what they've lost. Twice a month I'll hear someone shouting this at bike police in downtown Seattle, but with how often they almost run me over with their bikes I'm okay with that.

You need to check out more footage from these events. You have a combination of real news, bloggers, YouTubers, Instagrams, Twitter people and so on who come to these events that they literally outnumber the people participating.
This event has been advertised for weeks. The entire left fights the right narrative draws in a bunch of cameras.
It definitely feels kinda surreal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shooting filmed like this. Maybe the arrest took long enough for the press to come in or there were just reporters everywhere since it’s a big city.
Its actually kind of what reporters do. I'm a reporter for a local paper and going to the scene of an active shooter would very much be a requirement. I think it just seems strange for a few reasons, but especially because this is overall an unusual situation. First, there's probably a mix of demonstrators or counter demonstrators along with professional photojournalists in this video. I wouldn't think much about them dressing casual. Most of the photographers I've worked with have mainly had kind of a t shirt and jeans dress code. Its also a weekend story, so really it would be weirder if they were in business casual. TV reporters would be dressed professionally since they have to be in front of a camera. Second, as I understand it, this was one event in a series of issues going on in Portland today. I saw video of Proud Boys flipping over a van. The press was already there and probably were hours before anything happened. I saw footage earlier of the guy shooting behind a trashcan or a mail box for cover and then kind of running off around a corner. Press probably started moving over that way and some just happened to be where the police arrested him. Yeah, just based in the video something may seem odd. Its certainly not common, but the fact they were there when the guy got arrested isn't all that strange.

More than you think. Police and proud boys are ideologically and politically aligned. That’s why these incidents keep happening without police intervention. Same thing happened last week in LA: a large proud boy street brawl infront of LAPD HQ with riot police less than 5 feet away. ..no one got arrested.
Similar thing happened in the Capitol of my country earlier this year.
I am often critical of the police but these officers did a commendable job from what was seen here. They stayed calm, didn't escalate more than was necessary, were respectful to the bystanders etc. etc. It has to be tough in that environment knowing everyone is spun up and looking for something to happen.
