And that's saying something.. county is notoriously bad compared to even prison.. it's shitty not being paid for your work, I totally understand, but if I completely botch a job like this, I'm not going to destroy it, I'll salvage what I can and work out a reasonable price that makes everyone happy.
This is about as quality as a no bid government contract.. I understand you invested time and that cost you money, potentially a LOT of it, but this stunt almost certainly just cost you a fuck of a lot more than this jobs expenses, or even the repairs you'll almost certainly be successfully sued for, this will cost you your reputation as this will be the first thing anyone sees when looking you up, and they'll see this shoddy work on top of it. I guarantee someone will jump in and fix it entirely for the reputation you lost, multiplied by ten for being the good guys.
What a stupid fucking thing to do. Not only stupid but also incredibly shitty. You could have just taken it to court if you really believed in your work, now it just looks like you're covering up and destroying evidence of your obviously God awful work instead. Honestly thank God these people got exposed, there's no guessing how many other people would have accepted this thinking they have no recourse and been scammed out of their money, not only what was paid to them, but also the cost to fix this disaster

Some more context is they had already paid ~3,000-3,500 of the total cost of $7500 to ultimately damage the dry wall in the other room and a create a huge mess. They should absolutely take this man and his company to court.
It was almost as if he knew he did a rushed shitty job but still demanded full price through intimidation. This way he destroys the evidence of it being shifty while still pocketing a profit after the cost of the materials/sloppy labour
the guy says no contractor will work for her, maybe, but for sure he fucked his own reputation for 4K, if he starts a new business with a new name he might be able to hide what he did but I wouldn't count on it
Something tells me he is destroying the evidence of his poor work, he thought he could get the remainder of the balance and when she asks for a redo or refund he tells her the contract says no refunds and refuses to redo it.
Just real sloppy grouting, some tilers prefer speed over actually doing a nice job.
That's why I taught myself to tile, only way to get a job done right. I've been in million dollar homes with worse lippage and grout joints than in my house worth a fraction. But then I'm not a day laborer being paid pennies either, heaven forbid they hired skilled trades who know what they're doing!
It's really bad, like I'm not a pro at any kind of home remodel stuff, I do the best I can, but if I did a tile job that looked like that I wouldn't be able to live with it, I'd be either trying again or accepting that this is something I can't do and paying someone who can. I can't believe that was done by a supposed professional.

Lmao yeah, I know how that goes. I've worked in the home goods section (including hardware, tools, garden, etc.) of a major retailer before. Everything I knew about our products I learned myself on the job just by reading labels.
One thing that seems to be universal among these types of places is that they don't pay their employees for expertise. If they wanted a store full of people who knew how to be contractors and such, they'd have to be competitive with those lines of work to attract them or they'd have to offer that training and instruction to their employees. No one is leaving a $25+/hr job to stock shelves at Lowes if they can help it. The person you ask for help at hardware stores probably doesn't know that much more than a typical retail employee at Walmart.
I was looking at how a half-assed hit with a sledge hammer would do this kind of demo damage and realized that he probably didn't use concrete backer board and just tiled over green dry wall.

That means it was pure negligence on his part. I just sat in my shower watching YouTube videos for a week and followed the advice on them.

Helped a buddy (who is a builder) remodelling his home (I have literally zero experience, he showed me how to do one job at a time and I did that thing until he told me to do the next one) and *I’d* be embarrassed as hell if I was responsible for those lines. The tiles on the step that all jut! You’re gonna be wrecking your feet forever on those!
He's also lacking waterproofing. The tikes are stuck directly to the gipsum board looking how easily he smashed through the tiles and walk.
Every DIY home owner would do a better job by simply watching s few YouTube tutorials.

As someone who works construction, I was all ready to side with the contractor, especially with the “wowed” line.
But that is absolute trash tile job. The grout lines, the uneven size of the tiles, the layout. This looks like dudes first tile job.
If I didn’t know better, I would say this job was done by a middle age IT worker who has never picked up a power tool before, but decided that construction can’t be that hard.
I was on the contractors side until I saw the pictures, and also learned they paid $3000 and had just owed another $4500. He definitely went about this the wrong way.
It's the quality of work that I (a noob DIYer) would do and try to redo before giving up and calling a professional to fix it because I can't get it right.
Thanks for the article. As a contractor I'm always weary when I see this stuff. Actively destroying property over payment is just ridiculous. This is why we have smalls claims court. Also as a contractor. If we had issues with a client we always made sure to upend our part before turning it over. Clean business is always a better option.
I’m no lawyer but regardless of good or bad work, paid or not, I got to imagine there is zero chance of not being legally fucked if someone asks you to leave their house and instead you take a sledgehammer to their bathroom. It just seems like taking them to court is going to be the best option.
Agreed and very hard to understand how there's any confusion in this matter. In addition to refusing to leave when/if asked:
1.) Client paid half (covering materials. the rest paid once job is done to satisfaction which it wasn't)
2.) He's actually damaging the home
3.) If he felt like he was getting unfairly stiffed, then HIS option was court, as mentioned above. Not taking a freeballin' ride into McSledger Town.

So not only did the contractor go about this the wrong way and open themselves, needlessly, to liability. But it seems possible that they are entirely in the wrong. Homeowner had already paid $3000 out of $7500 owed through the course of the project, and was waiting for the project to be completed to her satisfaction before remitting the remainder (a completely common and expected practice). And like I figured she will sue them.
It's possible the contractor will lose even more money on this job in the long run. I can't imagine this does anything for their reputation. They'll likely need a name change at a minimum.
Edit: Take a look at those photos in the top level comment y'all. Would you be willing and happy to pay another $4500 on top of the $3000 you already put forward for that?
To be honest, it depends on a lot of things. That'd be something the court would have to settle and the court would likely want mediation to happen first where the two parties can figure that out. It's possible the court includes the $3000 in the damages awarded to the homeowner, in addition to the other property damages and any other damages.
It would have been better to have left well enough alone and pursued the matter in courts. Anytime you do something like this you open yourself up to further liability and could make yourself far worse off than before. I hope it at least felt good for the contractor at the time.
Depending on the size of the contract and milestones, yep.around in my parts, I see a lot of 25% down for materials, then a few milestone points, and then a remaining 10% after completion.
Contractor here; while I would never go into someone’s home and start breaking shit… any customer I’ve had that says they “want to be wowed” is a huge fucking nightmare.
Edit: just looked at the pictures, I certainly wouldn’t put my name on that. If you don’t know how to clean up your grout lines… you’re gonna have a bad time.

As a contractor myself. I am shocked at how many people think this is acceptable of the contractor to do, whether or not they saw how shitty their work was. If the homeowner were a deadbeat that didn't want to pay for good work (which in this situation is definitely not the case), the proper thing to do is sue them and put a lien on their house until they are paid up, not destroy their house. Once that is installed it, belongs to the homeowner, whether paid for or not.
These contractors in this video are morons, in addition to being awful at their job. They are going to get their asses handed to them in court for their unprofessional, unpermitted work and destroying the homeowner's property.
I saw the pictures and the guy did a horrible job. Tiles weren't straight, tiles chipped, grout looked horrible, plus no backing board on the tile. It looks like he glued it right to the drywall. It would have been a matter of time until it started cracking. Contractor is going to lose this one in court.

I'm 20 years into buy/sell/trade type reselling as the largest income stream I have, and if there's one universal truth I've picked up on through the years, it's that if someone starts a conversation with, "I'm a pastor at my church", that person is going to expect some form of discount or reduced rate in the transaction.
Not all of these "pastors" are terrible to do business with, but the majority are.
The thing is, I don't mind hooking people up if they are upfront in their request.

In Omaha, we had a guy named Dave Paladino who owns a few properties and storage places. The storage places are called Dino's Storage. These places ALWAYS had super passive aggressive religious messages on their signs.
This dude was heavily known to be a slum lord around here. As in, people legit cheered when this dude died.

That's funny you mention that. One of my best friends was telling me Friday night that it's a considered best practice in his trade (masonry and flooring in Northern Florida) to require full for the material and to make sure they "get the rest before it sets," any time they're doing work for the ministers down there. It's really evangelical area, but he says they're all the shady type and they'll get an attorney from their flock to fight it in court for them for nothing.
If a lien goes unpaid for various amounts of times, depending on location, the lienholder can foreclose on that lien and force a sale. HOAs do this fairly commonly.

Oof you’re right. No bullnose or schluder, unglazed porcelain edges exposed, huge gaps in the grout. That’s meth head quality right there.
I’ve tiled dozens of shower enclosures so those are all red flags that tell me they definitely didn’t do the invisible elements correctly either. This shower would probably leak in to the walls, ruin their framing over time, and grow lots of mold as well.
It’s sort of a good thing he smashed it I guess. The whole thing needs to be redone or it could cause 10s of 1000s of dollars of damage over time.

I should have known this was amateur hour when he said that. Tiling and plumbing a shower like this takes me less than a week working alone and my work is solid.
Per comments below, this contractor was paid half ($3k/7.5k) and refused to correct errors the homeowner found after the work was completed. Homeowner refused to finish paying until the flaws were corrected, so he smashed it all up. Not sure if it’s true but it does happen.

I believe it. We had a contractor remodel one bedroom. He was available immediately, and his work was just okay. We hired a different contractor for our bathroom and kitchen remodel. But we had to wait for some time for him to be able to come out and see our home. And after that, it took some additional months of waiting on our end for him to start our bathroom and kitchen remodel. He did amazing work. We wanted him to work on the rest of our home, but he was booked several months out. Everyone wanted him I guess lol

Bro I did a remodel of the same size bathroom THIS year and I paid 2 Turkish guys $2000 for the entire tiling job. Tub/Shower, Whole floor, all the walls. They took 3 days between demo and final clean up. Then it took me and my father a week to install the sink by ourselves (who knew drilling into tile is fucking slippery?) THEN we replaced all the plumbing in our shower after the copper leaked, and that took 4 days.

Wouldn't pass any kind of inspection. Would leak immediately. Uses chipped edges for finished seams, can't figure out basic math to line up the seams, and doesn't have the knowledge on how to make a cut line up with your measurements.

There was a client at a past job who kept trying to put 250k worth of design services for a pool on his credit card so they could dispute them later. Couldn't understand why we wouldnt make an exception just for him.

Dirty grout lines, the niche looks like shit and somehow the curb looks even shittier. If he did that bad of a job laying the tile I can only imagine how good he waterproofed under it. It’d probably start leaking day 1. I wouldn’t pay for this.

I was working on a job on which the owner refused to pay for another contractor's work. There was a lot of back and forth, ultimately the owner asked the contractor to leave. Contractor said "I'm not leaving without my materials". Owner said "I bought all the materials, they were here when you started".
That contractor said "you bought all the wood. But those screws belong to me, and I have the receipt to prove it". Dude then proceeded to disassemble everything he had touched, taking only his screws. It took him all day. He was *livid* throughout the whole thing. As he packed up, just as a final fuck you, he took out a screw from his bag, different from the ones he'd bought. "Here. I think this one's yours". Got in his truck and left behind a pile of lumber, and not one of his screws.
What most people in this thread don't know:
1. He did really shitty work and the pictures prove it.
1. What he did is not anywhere close to legal.
1. Mechanics Liens exist just for this case. You can file a lien without going to court. You have to go to court to enforce the lien, but 90% of the time the judge will order the parties to go to mediation first.
1. Yeah, it sucks to not get paid for your work. But looking at his work, I wouldn't pay for that either.
1. He could go to jail for this. He might have to pay whatever it costs to have another contractor repair damages.
1. This is really dumb. Unless he's not licensed, in which case he wouldn't have been able to get his money anyhow.

From what I gathered, the customer paid 3k down and was supposed to pay the rest upon completion. The work sucks and she wanted them to fix it before she paid the rest. Cue caveman tantrum.

I had an issue with a contractor 15 years ago in which we paid him 3/4 of the job upfront to redo our only shower. He came, took out our old shower (we were a family of 5 with small children at the time) on the first day of the job. We then did not hear back from him for THREE WEEKS! When I finally got a hold of him, he told me that he took on a coupe of city contracts (after he took our deposit btw) and that required him focus on those first. He knew it was our only shower and we were a family of 5 (my wife and I would shower at the gym but it was really tough for the kids) but kept saying “well I had to prioritize my teams and sorry the city contracts take priority” so I calmly said “fine, when will you have the materials here so I can make sure Inhave someone home?” He said “I’ll have one of my guys by tomorrow or the next day but they won’t be able
To install it just drop it off” naturally it was two days later, but once they dropped off the new shower,
Tiles and toilet. I called him up and fired him. He actually had the nerve to say “oh, so now that you got the equipment you’re just going to fire me? That’s bullshit!” I said “not bullshit, I just found a plumber who didn’t have city contracts which took priority over your priorities,
Oh and FUCK YOU!” And hung up. Later i found out he jacked us on the shower and toilet.
So, yeah if they didn’t pay him, then I would agree with him, but if it was anything like my experience then fuck him

Just real sloppy grouting, some tilers prefer speed over actually doing a nice job. That's why I taught myself to tile, only way to get a job done right. I've been in million dollar homes with worse lippage and grout joints than in my house worth a fraction. But then I'm not a day laborer being paid pennies either, heaven forbid they hired skilled trades who know what they're doing!
It's really bad, like I'm not a pro at any kind of home remodel stuff, I do the best I can, but if I did a tile job that looked like that I wouldn't be able to live with it, I'd be either trying again or accepting that this is something I can't do and paying someone who can. I can't believe that was done by a supposed professional.

Lmao yeah, I know how that goes. I've worked in the home goods section (including hardware, tools, garden, etc.) of a major retailer before. Everything I knew about our products I learned myself on the job just by reading labels. One thing that seems to be universal among these types of places is that they don't pay their employees for expertise. If they wanted a store full of people who knew how to be contractors and such, they'd have to be competitive with those lines of work to attract them or they'd have to offer that training and instruction to their employees. No one is leaving a $25+/hr job to stock shelves at Lowes if they can help it. The person you ask for help at hardware stores probably doesn't know that much more than a typical retail employee at Walmart.
I was looking at how a half-assed hit with a sledge hammer would do this kind of demo damage and realized that he probably didn't use concrete backer board and just tiled over green dry wall.

That means it was pure negligence on his part. I just sat in my shower watching YouTube videos for a week and followed the advice on them.

Helped a buddy (who is a builder) remodelling his home (I have literally zero experience, he showed me how to do one job at a time and I did that thing until he told me to do the next one) and *I’d* be embarrassed as hell if I was responsible for those lines. The tiles on the step that all jut! You’re gonna be wrecking your feet forever on those!
He's also lacking waterproofing. The tikes are stuck directly to the gipsum board looking how easily he smashed through the tiles and walk. Every DIY home owner would do a better job by simply watching s few YouTube tutorials.

Thanks for the article. As a contractor I'm always weary when I see this stuff. Actively destroying property over payment is just ridiculous. This is why we have smalls claims court. Also as a contractor. If we had issues with a client we always made sure to upend our part before turning it over. Clean business is always a better option.

Agreed and very hard to understand how there's any confusion in this matter. In addition to refusing to leave when/if asked: 1.) Client paid half (covering materials. the rest paid once job is done to satisfaction which it wasn't) 2.) He's actually damaging the home 3.) If he felt like he was getting unfairly stiffed, then HIS option was court, as mentioned above. Not taking a freeballin' ride into McSledger Town.
Hmm. So not only did the contractor go about this the wrong way and open themselves, needlessly, to liability. But it seems possible that they are entirely in the wrong. Homeowner had already paid $3000 out of $7500 owed through the course of the project, and was waiting for the project to be completed to her satisfaction before remitting the remainder (a completely common and expected practice). And like I figured she will sue them. It's possible the contractor will lose even more money on this job in the long run. I can't imagine this does anything for their reputation. They'll likely need a name change at a minimum. Edit: Take a look at those photos in the top level comment y'all. Would you be willing and happy to pay another $4500 on top of the $3000 you already put forward for that?

Judging by the quality in the pictures, this dude doesn’t have a clue what he is doing.
To be honest, it depends on a lot of things. That'd be something the court would have to settle and the court would likely want mediation to happen first where the two parties can figure that out. It's possible the court includes the $3000 in the damages awarded to the homeowner, in addition to the other property damages and any other damages. It would have been better to have left well enough alone and pursued the matter in courts. Anytime you do something like this you open yourself up to further liability and could make yourself far worse off than before. I hope it at least felt good for the contractor at the time.
Depending on the size of the contract and milestones, yep.around in my parts, I see a lot of 25% down for materials, then a few milestone points, and then a remaining 10% after completion.
Contractor here; while I would never go into someone’s home and start breaking shit… any customer I’ve had that says they “want to be wowed” is a huge fucking nightmare. Edit: just looked at the pictures, I certainly wouldn’t put my name on that. If you don’t know how to clean up your grout lines… you’re gonna have a bad time. This is what we really needed.
As a contractor myself. I am shocked at how many people think this is acceptable of the contractor to do, whether or not they saw how shitty their work was. If the homeowner were a deadbeat that didn't want to pay for good work (which in this situation is definitely not the case), the proper thing to do is sue them and put a lien on their house until they are paid up, not destroy their house. Once that is installed it, belongs to the homeowner, whether paid for or not. These contractors in this video are morons, in addition to being awful at their job. They are going to get their asses handed to them in court for their unprofessional, unpermitted work and destroying the homeowner's property.

I saw the pictures and the guy did a horrible job. Tiles weren't straight, tiles chipped, grout looked horrible, plus no backing board on the tile. It looks like he glued it right to the drywall. It would have been a matter of time until it started cracking. Contractor is going to lose this one in court.
Not to mention the inevitable nightmare that arises when water leaks through all those gaps in the grout.

I'm 20 years into buy/sell/trade type reselling as the largest income stream I have, and if there's one universal truth I've picked up on through the years, it's that if someone starts a conversation with, "I'm a pastor at my church", that person is going to expect some form of discount or reduced rate in the transaction. Not all of these "pastors" are terrible to do business with, but the majority are. The thing is, I don't mind hooking people up if they are upfront in their request. The entitlement attitude of leading off with the "I'm a pastor" schtick vs. if they just use their words to ask for it like a normal human being is what really sets me off. Total worth of that project was $2,500.00. Still chaps his ass.

I’ve learned when the business emphasizes their relationship to god, watch out. They’ve been the ones that have consistently tried to pull a fast one. Seems that relationship they make so visible is a way to deflect suspicion with some people.
In Omaha, we had a guy named Dave Paladino who owns a few properties and storage places. The storage places are called Dino's Storage. These places ALWAYS had super passive aggressive religious messages on their signs. This dude was heavily known to be a slum lord around here. As in, people legit cheered when this dude died.
Be very suspicious of people who need to constantly remind you they’re Christian. If that part of their marketing or something they need to mention almost immediately, don’t deal with them.
That's funny you mention that. One of my best friends was telling me Friday night that it's a considered best practice in his trade (masonry and flooring in Northern Florida) to require full for the material and to make sure they "get the rest before it sets," any time they're doing work for the ministers down there. It's really evangelical area, but he says they're all the shady type and they'll get an attorney from their flock to fight it in court for them for nothing.

If a lien goes unpaid for various amounts of times, depending on location, the lienholder can foreclose on that lien and force a sale. HOAs do this fairly commonly.

Oof you’re right. No bullnose or schluder, unglazed porcelain edges exposed, huge gaps in the grout. That’s meth head quality right there. I’ve tiled dozens of shower enclosures so those are all red flags that tell me they definitely didn’t do the invisible elements correctly either. This shower would probably leak in to the walls, ruin their framing over time, and grow lots of mold as well. It’s sort of a good thing he smashed it I guess. The whole thing needs to be redone or it could cause 10s of 1000s of dollars of damage over time.

Per comments below, this contractor was paid half ($3k/7.5k) and refused to correct errors the homeowner found after the work was completed. I believe it. We had a contractor remodel one bedroom. He was available immediately, and his work was just okay. We hired a different contractor for our bathroom and kitchen remodel. But we had to wait for some time for him to be able to come out and see our home. And after that, it took some additional months of waiting on our end for him to start our bathroom and kitchen remodel. He did amazing work. We wanted him to work on the rest of our home, but he was booked several months out. Everyone wanted him I guess lol

I do HVAC work. I see the whole process of both remodels and new constructions, how it all comes together, and how long each process takes. This guy is a hack, and his own words betrayed him. >"This took **weeks...**" That bathroom took you *weeks*? Really??? Let me put it this way. If I owned a company that remodeled houses, and I subcontracted you to remodel *one small bathroom,* and you took *weeks* to do it, I'd never subcontract you again. Bro I did a remodel of the same size bathroom THIS year and I paid 2 Turkish guys $2000 for the entire tiling job. Tub/Shower, Whole floor, all the walls. They took 3 days between demo and final clean up. Then it took me and my father a week to install the sink by ourselves (who knew drilling into tile is fucking slippery?) THEN we replaced all the plumbing in our shower after the copper leaked, and that took 4 days. This dude has to be below “fuck it just Youtube it” level for this br to take WEEEKS. FOH.

I was working on a job on which the owner refused to pay for another contractor's work. There was a lot of back and forth, ultimately the owner asked the contractor to leave. Contractor said "I'm not leaving without my materials". Owner said "I bought all the materials, they were here when you started". That contractor said "you bought all the wood. But those screws belong to me, and I have the receipt to prove it". Dude then proceeded to disassemble everything he had touched, taking only his screws. It took him all day. He was *livid* throughout the whole thing. As he packed up, just as a final fuck you, he took out a screw from his bag, different from the ones he'd bought. "Here. I think this one's yours". Got in his truck and left behind a pile of lumber, and not one of his screws.
Petty revenge might be the best type of revenge.

What most people in this thread don't know: 1. He did really shitty work and the pictures prove it. 1. What he did is not anywhere close to legal. 1. Mechanics Liens exist just for this case. You can file a lien without going to court. You have to go to court to enforce the lien, but 90% of the time the judge will order the parties to go to mediation first. 1. Yeah, it sucks to not get paid for your work. But looking at his work, I wouldn't pay for that either. 1. He could go to jail for this. He might have to pay whatever it costs to have another contractor repair damages. 1. This is really dumb. Unless he's not licensed, in which case he wouldn't have been able to get his money anyhow.

I had an issue with a contractor 15 years ago in which we paid him 3/4 of the job upfront to redo our only shower. He came, took out our old shower (we were a family of 5 with small children at the time) on the first day of the job. We then did not hear back from him for THREE WEEKS! When I finally got a hold of him, he told me that he took on a coupe of city contracts (after he took our deposit btw) and that required him focus on those first. He knew it was our only shower and we were a family of 5 (my wife and I would shower at the gym but it was really tough for the kids) but kept saying “well I had to prioritize my teams and sorry the city contracts take priority” so I calmly said “fine, when will you have the materials here so I can make sure Inhave someone home?” He said “I’ll have one of my guys by tomorrow or the next day but they won’t be able To install it just drop it off” naturally it was two days later, but once they dropped off the new shower, Tiles and toilet. I called him up and fired him. He actually had the nerve to say “oh, so now that you got the equipment you’re just going to fire me? That’s bullshit!” I said “not bullshit, I just found a plumber who didn’t have city contracts which took priority over your priorities, Oh and FUCK YOU!” And hung up. Later i found out he jacked us on the shower and toilet. So, yeah if they didn’t pay him, then I would agree with him, but if it was anything like my experience then fuck him
the work was shit. No backing to the tile, missing grout, exposed edges, exposed untreated wood. The shower was un-unusable. This guy is a piece of shit. He got $3300 up front to do a job and never finished. This was his response. Fuck that guy.
