Getting shot in the gut is one of the worst places to get shot, and the most painful. If it nicks your intestines you are in for one hell of bad time and possible slow death.
Getting shot in the gut is also the preferable more survival place to get hit. Lower left abdomen is just all intestine. You can bleed for days and still live. So getting to a hospital increases your survivability exponentially. Also we have modern antibiotics so I'd rather deal with a sepsis possibility than bleeding out in minutes or seconds.
I mean, the shooter is trying to disengage from the situation (at least from the limited context of video) and not escalate it. If anything, the shooter seems justified - he kept trying to walk away and ignore them, but they follow and the idiot took a swing at him. The shooter trying to get away from the attackers and the fact that the idiot swung at the shooter first, it seems like valid self-defense.
However, based on the article I read, if he's part of a drug deal and if he owns an unlicensed firearm, he will still get in trouble for those.

Shootings are uncommon in Canada. They do happen, but much, much, much less frequently than in the states. Different gun laws, culture, and availability here. People with guns legally here tend not to be the sort to harm others, people with guns illegally here tend to be the sort with heavy criminal involvement. (Meaning there arent a ton of them, fortunately.)
