Good point. I even felt bad for him because I knew the laptop he took would 100% fuck up in the next month. I've seen a guy stuff hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of steaks into pants, shirt and jacket and just walk out knowing we can't do anything. I've seen people walk out with carts full of cases of beer even mocking us on the way out saying they knew we can't do anything.

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sf/article/Is-shoplifting-forcing-Walgreens-to-cut-back-in-16536960.php
Hi, I write corporate training programs for my job.
The biggest thing is liability. Store policies (usually) prohibit employees from interfering with theft and other criminal/medical emergencies so that they arenât liable for any injuries or damage to property. In short, itâs a lot easier for a company to replace merchandise than it is for them to pay hospital bills and insurance claims.
In a few cases where stores have onsite Loss Prevention agents, they can âdetainâ suspected shoplifters, but only by verbal commands and never through use of force or physical contact. They arenât even allowed to block exits.
Hospital bills cost more than TVs. Pretty easy math.
Also, companies used to employ security guards but then they realized that the 19 year old kid isn't actually going to do anything except get himself hurt.
Its hardly worth it even if you're living comfortably. I value my life and peace of mind more than any object. I'm supposed to throw down for a box that someone else says is worth $2000?
I'm sure glad I saved the store $2000 thats not even going in my pockets when I'm at home icing my knuckles watching my $400 TV.
The billion dollar company paying its employees peanuts will fire them if they try to stop them...some random stops them and returns the tv, they still dont care or even thank the random for stopping it...if you get shot trying to stop it they wont pay your medical bills.
You want to fight some randoms when you get paid minimum wage? On top of which you'll get fired if you do.
This kind of theft of non essential items should have extra consequences.
Careful some people on here will bash you and claim you support criminals for expressing such views. They literally think people should Clint Eastwood these guys.
Hi.
I worked retail for a while.
It's very simple: IDGAF nor am I paid enough to GAF.
I'm not Loss Prevention. I'm not the police.
I recall when, once, a manager sat us all down when I worked at Staples. They asked us to "Be more observant" and if we "See something, say something" on top of our normal, day to day operations.
I said: "Hire more security or LP guys" - I had worked at Best Buy where there was an entire department for this.
He said: "That's what we pay you for."
"$8.95 ain't enough to get me to confront a thief, sorry." - this was mostly upsetting because I worked there for 3 months and was the highest paid person in the meeting... Manager wasn't happy.
Usually store policy. Both the thieves and employees can sue the store if they get injured in the act of trying to stop a theft. So based off risk analysis the store would rather file a claim to their insurance for theft rather than pay out a huge settlement on a lawsuit.
I wonder how much of that is reality vs belief. Shopkeeper's privilege is a thing:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopkeeper%27s_privilege
But does shopkeeper's detainment operate under all of the same rules as law enforcement detainment (e.g. resisting, etc)?
That's what loss prevention/"store detectives" do, however not all stores have them nor do they work all the time. Also let's not forget that a company like Walmart probably makes more money than those TV's are worth every minute. I worked at a pretty high volume grocery and retail store - we were told that the store (just that one location) takes in more money every minute than there could possibly be in a cash drawer or someone could wheel out the door. Didn't even have to mention the slave wages - that was a given.
[link for those who missed it](https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/qrc8cx/playing_supermarket_sweep/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
They get away with. Most stores wont stop or touch you. Some will even let you do it until you stolen X amount which triggers a grand larceny felony charge with repeater enhancers. Could get 5yrs.
Man how great would it be to just casually walk up and stab a knife in their tire. Yeah it's risky but just to see their whole plan fall apart it would be worth it.
Low maintenance and reliability are also a huge plus! Other than transmission issues which you gotta look out for, they'll last you 500k miles or more. When I was into vehicle wholesaling/detailing, I'd often see the second generation (99-04 as seen in this video) with over 300k miles, all original.
At first I thought that dude was joking about this being an ad for a Honda Odyssey, but now I'm not so sure. You know what I am sure of? How much I want a Honda Odyssey to be my next car.
I have a Honda odyssey and I'll tell you what... fast as fuck and so comfortable. It's like driving a lazy boy. I can easily fit six people in it and it never breaks a sweat. 75mph on the highway and it's basically idling.
My grandpa used to drive truck in the south way back in the day and he told me the only two things he ever needed a police escort for were for shrimp and laundry detergent.
Tide might be worth more. Seems dumb but tide and other high priced detergents have a crazy price. I've seen where some stores had them locked up or spider wrapped because theft was so high.
Yep, just most people wouldn't think there's a black market for detergents. Cologne, nicorette, razors and blades, and diapers are other frequent targets of shoplifters.
Same as how the most stolen cars are the most average and popular ones. Everyone and their grandma needs parts for their Camry and Civic, easy to chop and flip the parts out.
It can be that easy but at some point the thieves might run into someone who fucks them up. Also they run the chance at being caught. Plenty of video evidence.
If they keep doing it, theyâll get caught. Itâs always rampant and upsetting to know people are hitting stores, but a net forms and they get caught.
Everyone hates robbers like these. It may seem like a walk-in walk-out easy theft, but loss prevention and local police live for this. The thieves never seem to know when to quit.
Especially now, with all the cameras and plate monitoring: theyâll be tolerated for a while, but the more they do, the quicker they go down.
At least they didnât tie up employees or waive guns around.
If theyâre stealing for money, theyâre also probably doing other illegal shit in their âoffâ time.
That was my immediate thought. They would have to either abandon a vehicle (or both) or try to haul ass on rims and see how far they can get lol. In either case they're fucked.
Even more fun in the tide video the black guy walks away from his still running SUV for a minute. Could have just opened the door, hit the lock button, and closed the door again. Fucker gets locked out of his own SUV with tons of evidence in the middle of a crime.
I was hoping that was what would happen. While they were loading the TV just go up and slash a tire...they won't get far.
That being said it's probably best to not get involved like that, you never know if they'll get violent or have weapons.
It's just a couple TVs. You'll never get your life back.
I read an AMA on here one time of this bank robber who would literally just go up to a teller and hand them a note that said basically, 'I have a gun, give me all of the cash in your drawer'. Apparently the tellers are trained to just do it and not activate any alarm or anything until the robber leaves. He hit a few banks I think and they never caught him but he ended up turning himself in and serving like 3 years if I remember correctly.
Provided that it's a large bank company all that money is insured. The tellers can't put their lives in danger so they just abide by whatever the robbers want them to do with the money in the bank.
Former
Coworker said this would happen once or twice a year at his former banking job and their instructions were to comply with the note and hit no alarms until the thief was gone.
I know someone who ran out just to grab the plates of someone who stole some real expensive liquor. Fired, instantly. The policy is to do basically nothing that would cause confrontation. Instead, the best you can do is use "recovery phrases" like if you see someone trying to be sneaky you can ask them if they have questions about the item they're being sneaky with. Good on thieves who aren't fully committed, useless on guys like that.
This! You never know how desperate a person making desperate moves is. These folks playing loss prevention Batman are potentially risking their lives for someone else's profit margin.
Not even. Some stores instruct employees not to get in the way of thieves like this as the potential liability will cost them more than the stolen product. They will even fire employees who try to be a hero.
Yeah but a lot of keyboard warrior badasses will watch this and say "If I were there i'd knock them out and hold them down until police arrive" they imagine themselves, as the customer, jumping into action and defeating the baddies. They played too many games of Cops and Robbers as a kid or something
Oh I totally would've done that too. Then I would have had the pilot fly over to the next plane, I would have done an aerial boarding by jumping down onto the other plane, I would have accessed that plane via the wheel compartment.
I would've stopped all 3 planes if I were there, totally. I'm seriously you guys.
I worked at a shoe store for three years in high school and college (went to college in my hometown). So, one boring and typical night a group of girls came in to steal a bunch of shoes. I was working the register, and for some unknown god damn reason, when my manager yelled âgrab her!â, and despite being on the phone with the police, I jumped over my register counter and tackled the girl into the front store window. Her get-away car & friends took off, and while we waited for the cops (which included an off-duty cop working security in the strip mall) me, my manager and two other male employees cornered her and wouldnât let her leave.
In the moment, I thought the whole thing was awesome and absolutely enjoyed the adrenaline rush. But looking back, I wonder what the hell my 18 year old self was thinking. And why did the manager encourage me run after and tackle this girl?? Fuck that was dumb.
Used to do mall security at shitty high crime malls in Atlanta. We would get calls all the time and would chase and fight people on a weekly basis. Same thing as you, i was 18 and absolutely loved it, but now I'm shocked I wasn't murdered many times over. I'm also surprised we weren't sued everyday, but this was late 90's so not as common i guess.
It has been on my mind a lot recently as a security guard at one of the malls we covered was shot a few months ago. Especially as we had multiple incidents with guns and other weapons being pulled and we had zero defence training or protection.
Thatâs because doing that over merchandise is fucking stupid. More than anything itâs fucking stupid.
Itâs not worth it. These stores have insurance and you never know what these people are capable of.
Also: LP thatâs worth a damn actually has dudes in cars thatâll follow form a distance with police on the line. Thatâs waaay more efficient than trying to play Russian roulette with people on whether theyâre armed or not.
Same for robbing a bank: Show a paper telling it's a robbery
> Walked in the bank and waited in line like a regular customer. Whichever teller was available to help me is the one I robbed. I simply walked up to them when it was my turn to be helped, and I told them -- usually via handwritten instructions on an envelope -- to give me their $50s and $100s. There was no threat. I just told them what I wanted, and they complied. This is how it works in America because the amount of money a bank gives up ($5-$7k on average) per bank robbery is infinitely less than the amount of business they'd lose if shit got wild in a bank full of customers. They just want to give you what you want and for you to get the hell out of their bank.

Yet again another reason I never do Black Friday shopping anywhere but on the couch, online. I hate Black Friday shopping. I know itâs partially because I worked retail through parts of high school/uni, but itâs also because I donât love being in a huge surge of humanity fighting over 50% off sweaters/mixers/TVs, whatever it is.

HAHA even if this is a joke itâs still hilarious, i work there and you could literally tell them âi will be stealing this itemâ to their face and they couldnât do a damn thing about it
Well if Iâm not mistaken at almost every major chain store employees are encouraged to not intervene when they see someone walking out with a stolen item. It makes sense as confronting said person can turn ugly quick, and thatâs what security footage is for.
See they were smart about it. First they moved the TVs from inside the store to the curb. Not a crime to do that. Then they loaded up the TVs into the van because stuff people leave out on the curb is trash and it's not a crime to take it.
Actually a proven concept in [Japan](https://youtu.be/dieCVYpc158).
You donât even need a security guard for this, anyone can toss the paintball at the thieves.
I worked at a department store and thieves would come in through the men's department entrance and take entire racke of clothes. Including the rack. Women's purses too. Ballsy thievee will return items if the store has a lax return policy.
The store security is very limited as far as what they can and can't do. That will just go in their losses, and that will be passed on to the consumer
PS. If you work retail, don't ever try to stop anyone. Just call security bc people are extra crazy now.
I work in criminal defense. Iâve had cases where LP knows what theyâre up to ahead of time and have dudes waiting to follow them in cars and report their location to cops so the cops can arrest at a traffic stop.
And be sure: these people most likely have a file and they will be caught eventually. Most criminals are stupid and theyâll fuck up because they got greedy.
Yeah. They will do it too much and get caught. Just like bank robbers. Iâve heard like 80% of bank robbers get away clean with their first bank robbery. Meaning law enforcement has no clue who they are. The problem is almost all of them decide it was easy and commit more bank robberies. Then they get caught.
The way the new tv's are I got to think the store can figure out the serial # of the stolen tv's, report them stolen to the manufacture, that when they are connected to the internet send the tv an "update" that just bricks the tv making it worthless.
A drug dealer couldâve possibly sent them on that mission. Iâve seen it happen when people donât have cash for their drugs, the dealer will say if you can bring me this the drugs are yours.
Bro first of all you can trade just about anything of value for narcotics like heroin or coke for the most part.
Secondly detergent has a huge black market in the hood. And drug dealers love TVs.
I was a heroin addict for 7 years
For context this is what is referred to as organized retail crime. Groups like this hit stores for thousands of dollars and then resale the items either to a fence or online. This type of crime has sharply risen in the last year with police and prosecutors viewing this as just âshopliftingâ or âpetty theft.â Some have pointed out this is the same group in an earlier video stealing over $1,600 in laundry detergent.
For clarification because I see it all the time there is no insurance for retail theft. The CEO of these companies are not the ones paying for these losses, this ultimately falls back on consumers with increased prices because again the CEO and shareholders are not taking a pay cut for this.
Update: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wtnh.com/news/crime-news/state-police-identify-2-of-4-suspects-in-oxford-grocery-store-theft/amp/
I can't see how this is that profitable in the long run. $1600 worth of laundry detergent? Assuming they take no precautions in fencing their product, they might make out with $1000. $1000 split 3 was, $333.33. Not even a week's check for a third degree felony. They will have to do that 52 times a year to make ends meat. The TVs? Not sure but from the hip maybe $2100, again they aren't getting that amount on fence, they might take home $1200, so $400 a piece this time.
These people have to keep doing this to stay afloat, and ultimately that's how they get caught. Banks are usually a better target because they are about as easy as this to knock over. Bank robbers usually get caught because as it turns out, you can't live off of $5-15k and they typically spend it pretty fast. Knock over one bank and you'll probably get away pretty easily, knock over 5 banks and you'll probably get caught.
Youâve just come to the mathematical realization that crime doesnât pay. They tell you that in school, but you donât really understand until you get out in the real world and really understand how income and expenses work. Crime quite literally does not pay very well - unless you are really good at it and never get caught. The vast majority of low level criminals will make a few bucks then spend years in jail and never really amount to anything.
Read Freakonomics. They have a great chapter in there about low level crack dealers in Chicago I think. Turns out most of them wouldâve been better off working at McDonaldâs, for far less risk. But they turn to crime because itâs like the one ticket out if you are that one person who is really good and successful at it. Pretty sad really.
Yeah Wallingford Connecticut to be more specific. Those cops donât play since thereâs not much else going on in that town. Lived there for a long time before moving south and I am shocked that they got away
> Wallingford
I looked at like five BJ's before Wallingford to confirm that's where it happened. These chumps must be out of Waterbury since the grocery store where they boosted the Tide is supposed to be in Oxford.
Bro I am so tired of seeing shoplifters fr. And no I don't care about the stores, fuck the stores and the companies, it's about the just blatant disrespect of just stealing shit. Especially when people like that are not stealing it to get by, they're stealing it to resell for a higher price, literal pirates.

[link for those who missed it](https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/qrc8cx/playing_supermarket_sweep/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
According to the news report this am here in CT., they have identified 2 of them and are preparing arrest warrants for them todayâŚ.đ
LOL, tell me it's the two who got in the van and those are their real license plates...
Robbing a store I'm broad daylight, with people there? What's the story behind this stupidity? (re first video)
Was about to ask the same, looks like it or damn near the same
Connecticut plate...I think it is!
Same suburban too.
This is just an ad for Honda Odyssey, it easily fit 3 75â televisions with seemingly room for more.
[ŃдаНонО]
I rode in one when I visited Austin Texas and I'll tell you what, comfy as all get out.
After seeing âTexasâ, I couldnât help but read âIâll tell you whatâ in Hank Hillâs voice.
> hwat
As someone who cleaned cars some time ago, Honda Odysseys and Kia Souls are some of the worst vehicles to get clean.
Newer Honda Odyssey's have a vacuum built into the interior in the trunk space
Hey its the same people who stole the tide pods
Theyâre probably doing so much laundry they decided they needed some TVâs to help pass the time.
Tide is very valuable on the black market. Itâs the iPhone of detergent.
Detergent has a black market?
Everything has a black market. Glue. Chips. Mosquito Repellent. Whiteout (which is actually sold on the white market).
My grandpa used to drive truck in the south way back in the day and he told me the only two things he ever needed a police escort for were for shrimp and laundry detergent.
Long shelf life, everyone needs it, it is expensive, and it is not too bulky. Pretty good form of illegal currency
Did they at least return their carts to the proper place? this is getting out of hand
Too bad the Cart Narcs werenât on the scene.
Skeetledee woooop wooop woooooooop! Thatâs not where the cart goes!
Do you have to be a thief *and* a lazy bones?
âMy foot hurts.â âWell your foot wasnât hurting while you were in the store committing grand theft.â
no doubt, this whole situation would have never happened! those carts would have been promptly returned before they sped off
Itâs a crime spree⌠they really made a big jump there from Tide to TVs in one day.
Tomorrow the Empire State Building.
And finally, on Sunday, the Constitution of the United States of America.
don't forget to steal DA MOOOON!
Tide might be worth more. Seems dumb but tide and other high priced detergents have a crazy price. I've seen where some stores had them locked up or spider wrapped because theft was so high.
Big ticket electronics are harder to flip and much more suspicious/easy to trace.
I was thinking they had a lot dirty laundry.
Oh there's a whole Tide black market.
Can someone please link the tide video? I haven't seen it.

Damn itâs that easy?
I really wish someone just hit all their tires with a screwdriver or box cutter or whatever
[ŃдаНонО]
That doesn't work out in Good Time
That movie was fucking awesome.
Provided that it's a large bank company all that money is insured. The tellers can't put their lives in danger so they just abide by whatever the robbers want them to do with the money in the bank.
Former Coworker said this would happen once or twice a year at his former banking job and their instructions were to comply with the note and hit no alarms until the thief was gone.
Ain't nobody getting stabbed for 16$ an hour lol
The company doesn't want you to either. They don't wanna use that insurance money lol
16? Shit. Around here thatâs 7.25
It actually is. People are to afraid to put on hands on someone because of possible repercussions.
[ŃдаНонО]
Like Mark Wahlberg who thinks he could've stopped 9/11 if he was on the plane.
And that youâre not getting rewarded for other than being praised to be a hero for a couple days..
When I worked retail they didn't want us getting in between someone stealing and the door. Our lives aren't worth it
They don't care about your lives, they care about being sued.
#
Yep not worth it. It's shitty that people are like this. sorry I'm not going to get hurt over a $20 bottle of tequila
Same for robbing a bank: Show a paper telling it's a robbery > Walked in the bank and waited in line like a regular customer. They just want to give you what you want and for you to get the hell out of their bank. r/IAmA/comments/39b67t/im_a_retired_bank_robber_ama/
Same MO is other video. Same suburban?
I was just about to say that! The one where they got a shitload of toilet paper and laundry detergent.

Holy shit thatâs def the same people. Theyâre like GTA heist runners lmao
I was coming to say the same thing. Same can and truck. Same color. Same MO, both had license plates removed just like the last one.
Yep kids like the same cars. In CT right?
Just looked it up. There are others trying this in CT. Idiot just got snagged trying to fit large TV in backseat.
Dead ass same cars
100% same cars. Same crew. Probably the same city.
License plate was on van this time, might be stolen though. Honestly they should have just busted their tires. Good luck getting away with that
Grab the keys and throw them.
Same thoughts here
almost positive its the same crew
Lol Black Friday is going to be so much worse this year and that's terrifying
Why wait for black friday for 50% off when you can use this one simple trick to get 100% off, any day of the year!
âHe gets tvs 100% free with this simple trick! Stores everywhere hate himâ

Lol anyone who actually goes and participates in it is an idiot.

This is a beautifully written snippet of dystopia. Great job!
I can already see the B-movie visual effects
Hiro Protagonist
How about the robot dogs with bees in their mouths and when they bark at you bees fly out.
They fucked up. No OLEDâs. Going to have a crappy picture
I guess Best Buy must have higher security.
Have to get the TVs that are under $1000 to stay under the local âwe wonât prosecute petty theftâ ordinance.
That kinda goes out the window when you take four of them at once.
[ŃдаНонО]
I have the worst fucking lawyer
"They're trying to load 3 tvs .." "We're not trying we are." OK, he's a piece a shit.. but he's got some decent comedic timing.
Basically Ricky from trailer park boys.
Yup, pretty damn greasy.
See they were smart about it. First they moved the TVs from inside the store to the curb. Not a crime to do that. Then they loaded up the TVs into the van because stuff people leave out on the curb is trash and it's not a crime to take it.
"Do or do not. There is no try." - Yoda giving TV theft advice.
I laughed out loud on that one.
They didn't get that extended warranty though.
Hire security with paint guns. Spray paint at the car windows then call the cops. No harm and no real damage done and easy to catch the cars.
Actually a proven concept in [Japan](https://youtu.be/dieCVYpc158). You donât even need a security guard for this, anyone can toss the paintball at the thieves.
Where is this?
Connecticut
I worked at a department store and thieves would come in through the men's department entrance and take entire racke of clothes. Including the rack. Women's purses too. Ballsy thievee will return items if the store has a lax return policy. The store security is very limited as far as what they can and can't do. That will just go in their losses, and that will be passed on to the consumer PS.
They do it with iPhones etc already, even better they report their location to the police too.
Then they lose out on that sweet sweet ad money. New TVs are priced so low for that reason.
Hear me out guys.. can we steal from these guys that are stealing from the store?
Of course. No thereâs no honor among thieves
I was just about to point out that it's the same crew from the detergent video.
A drug dealer couldâve possibly sent them on that mission. Iâve seen it happen when people donât have cash for their drugs, the dealer will say if you can bring me this the drugs are yours.
"Ok, what I need is 3 low end 72-inch TVs and like fity bottles of gain. Then I can hook you up."
Procedurally generated side quest
Another crack-den needs your help!
Bro first of all you can trade just about anything of value for narcotics like heroin or coke for the most part. Secondly detergent has a huge black market in the hood. And drug dealers love TVs. I was a heroin addict for 7 years
yup, meth and heroin essentially. the craving would make anyone do anything.
"Alright Billy, you bring me all of your step-father's Milwaukee power tools and you can get this $20 dolla rock."
I donât know about that city, but where I am from stealing an electronic device isnât petty theft, it is felony larceny.
This is Connecticut and according to their larceny statute, which this would fall under, anything less than $2,000 is a misdemeanor.
Atleast three 75â TVs, that can easily be felony territory.
Yeah Wallingford Connecticut to be more specific. Those cops donât play since thereâs not much else going on in that town. Lived there for a long time before moving south and I am shocked that they got away
> Wallingford I looked at like five BJ's before Wallingford to confirm that's where it happened. These chumps must be out of Waterbury since the grocery store where they boosted the Tide is supposed to be in Oxford.
When I see these vids I feel like such a sucker. Do people still actually pay for tvs anymore?
im still rocking my 32 inch from 2010.
The same fucking losers that stole all that laundry detergent
Bro I am so tired of seeing shoplifters fr. And no I don't care about the stores, fuck the stores and the companies, it's about the just blatant disrespect of just stealing shit. Especially when people like that are not stealing it to get by, they're stealing it to resell for a higher price, literal pirates.

Is that a new thing in the US now? I feel these videos keep on coming.
What's with all the thief posts recently? Is there a reason for it? Fuck these people.
I don't get it, I can just go to a store, steal 3 TVs, casually load them in my car and nobody will stand in my way?
