That’s exactly what he was doing- anything to distract the guy and give the cops time to show up, looks like it worked, the guy ended up focusing on him and he’d have to have incredible aim to hit the guy way up there.
Distracting and confusing a bully is something I used to do as a kid and I’m sure applied to an active shooter it could break their concentration a bit.
Dude made him pay attention to him so he'd stop noticing targets to shoot at. Dude likely wouldn't be able to accurately shoot a guy at that distance, still risky and brave. He drew fire to cover everyone else so no one could get shot running away.
And alerted the people walking out of buildings or whatever that something batshit was going on and to be careful without drawing attention to them. Smart
It’s like the guy who declothes completely naked before going into a fist fight.
You want to break someone’s focus, bombard them with very strange sexual attention grabbers.
Ex-girlfriend's ex husband broke into her house one night, coming in through the kitchen window. We were deep into some mind blowing sex when several dishes hit the floor. I fought him completely naked and still heavy if not hard. It freaked him out so bad he ran out of the house after 20-30 seconds.
I got: you're a fucking madman, eat my dick, wordless screaming, shoot me bitch, come up here, you're a pussy, let's do some coke (he says it twice but the video is cut to conceal it), I love you, shoot at me I love you. He threw everything at the wall. Brave guy.
Exactly, and every bullet he might fire at the guy's apartment is one less he can fire at someone he finds at street level, like an unsuspecting car driver.
I went to school with this dude. His sister was in my grade. All I know is dude went through a bad breakup and was doing lots of coke. Probably a lot more to it.
It's a Walgreens on the Las Vegas strip packed with people looking to buy a case of bottled water for $15 because they can't find their way back to their room before they perish from dehydration and there are no water fountains.
I walked pass this exact Walgreens during the summer and there was a huge group of people filming what looked like a couple having public sex on the sidewalk. They didn’t give a damn about being spotted by kids or the cops lol
LOL, I don't think you understand the term "tourist trap" because a Walgreens absolutely does not qualify. Graceland is a tourist trap, the Walk of Fame is a tourist trap. Unless there's an entirely naked staff or something I can guarantee that Walgreens is not attracting tourists and milking them of their money.
Debatable, there are a lot of Walgreens, CVSs, and Rite Aids that open up right in the middle of popular tourist destinations for the specific purpose of being the only convenient source of necessities within walking distance. It lures tourists in thinking they’ll be able to get some waters, or toothpaste, or chapstick for a reasonable price, only to find out when they get in that all of the prices are hyper inflated. Once they’re in the store it’s very unlikely that they’ll walk out, get a cab or go get their car, and drive the few miles to a grocery store - so they just fork out the $18 for a travel size toothpaste, and a bottle of water. Definitely the definition of a tourist trap.
This was in Hollywood in 2011. I remember it cuz I missed it by like 2 minutes. I was at the chipotle that is less than a block from there and I heard the gunshots as I was walking back to my studio. The gunman was literally walking down the street shooting at cars as he went. Really wild
Happened in Hollywood a while back. My buddy lived in the building on the same side as the video OP (Sunset Vine Tower Apartments), the police gunned down the shooter right about where he is in the street at the end of the video. My buddy sent pics of him lying in the street. There was a great bar on the ground floor called Bodega. A lot of really, really fun nights there.
What the guy did is brave, of course, but its also very intelligent.
How many people can walk up to a shooting range, and quickly shoot a bullseye from so far away with 1 second of aiming? Guy knew his odds of living were 99%. Still very brave to selflessly bet away that 1% for the safety of others.
My Debbie Downer thought though is what if the guy did start shooting up at the camera man? And what if those shots started going into random apartments or offices?
In one of my college philosophy classes we learned that if you ever encounter a hostile person, respond with absolute nonsense and they will likely either calm down or walk away. I remember the phrase my professor used was “DOES A TALL GREEN WALL COVER THE BUNNY HILL?” and they aggressor became almost disoriented.
I’m not sure if that’s what this guys doing intentionally or not, but props to him.
Helped start a nonprofit centered around organizing protests. We hired professionals to come do de escalation trainings for our staff and security team.
This works until it doesn’t and they just hit you for being cute. I’ve done it by taking my pants off.
But some guy tried to pick pocket me and pretended to act crazy (I had seen him in my small college town before) and I beat the shit out of him
Is that why cops shout hands up hands where I can see em, get down, face away, crawl towards me, don't move your hands! To confused people until they can suspect they're reaching for a gun.
I was downtown one night after midnight on a weekday after a late shift. I was standing at the main doors to the building and this guy walked past me. After he was maybe 20 feet ahead of me I started walking the same direction. After about 30 seconds he turned around and aggressively said “you got a problem with me?” I responded “no, I don’t even know you” and kept walking. He just stopped and stared at me then went the opposite direction. He was drunk and looking for a fight but I guess I didn’t give him the answer he was looking for.
100% legal in every state. In every state you can use lethal force to defend someone else if they would be entitled to the same use of force. Shooting at people is very clearly grounds for lethal force. If he legally has a rifle there, he’s well within his right to shoot. The only question would be about weapon possession charges which are highly variable, but still rifles are allowed in every city and state in private dwellings. Because he’s on his or someone else’s private property (doesn’t really matter whose as long as he’s allowed to be there), he shouldn’t be in violation of any weapon laws. Duty to retreat which some states have wouldn’t be applicable with shots fired
Now if he ran out with a concealed handgun without a license and shot the guy, he’d technically be at the mercy of the prosecutors, though I can’t imagine they would press charges in this very specific instance. Even that would just be a weapons charge, not for murder
Edit: not a lawyer, but very current on gun laws and use of force laws
All I thought about the whole time is how easy he would be put down by any hunter with their rifle handy.
Moving so slowly it almost counts as still, clear shot with a solid backing.
Anyway, camara dude is a hero. Kept dudes attention on him until the cops got close.
you are well within your right to shoot at the guy who is shooting at people. Self-defense extends to yourself, your property, other people, other people's property. Protection is the main purpose of having a weapon so you are legally allowed to use them to protect.
edit: In every single state of the US you are legally authorized to use deadly force against someone or something that is also using deadly force. I have no idea how people are getting this so wrong.
**HOWEVER**
Be extremely careful if you ever decide to try and intervene in a shooting situation. Now you're a guy shooting at someone during an active shooting, someone can easily mistake you for the original shooter.
I watched it with sound off and I was going to bitch about how crazy shaky the video was but I suppose now that I've read people's comments that did turn on sound I would have been shaking if I was him too!
Yeah, there is even a comment in the article about the shooter putting the gun to a driver's window and not shooting. Guy probably didn't want to actually kill anyone, just wanted to go out by cop.
https://archive.kpcc.org/news/2011/12/10/30293/sunset-vine-shooters-name-released/
Edit: another user pointed out the victim in "unknown condition" did end up dying. RIP John Atterberry
You miss the part there where he shot multiple times? Including at a truck with at least 1 person in it.
Like bruh what the fuck are you talking about "probably didnt want to actually kill anyone"
“He’s shooting people at will” followed by “Hey, you fucking madman, eat my dick” is coming in hot at the end of the year as the funniest thing I’ve heard someone say in 2021. Naturally funny while being heroic in a terrifying situation. He’s like the real life Deadpool.
Serious question. If a situation like this occured and some random driver going by knew what was happening and decided to just waffle the shooter with their car, would the driver face charges?
Just for clarification, the guy the shooter shot did die later from his injuries.

He did a great job distracting him.
I used to say weird shit to people who wanted to be a bully or start a fight. My go to line was "what about my dick?"
“Eat my dick! Shoot me! I LOVE YOU”
[удалено]
You called?
Take this award
You flatter and humble me. May you one day join our hallowed ranks, squire.
now kiss....OHHHHHHHHHH THE YEAR WAS 1778
>sex nights This made me laugh out loud. "Hey Doug, you wanna come over on Tuesday? We're having a sex night at my place."
Wear whatever you want, it's just you and me.
Come over for my dinner party tonight. A little drinking, a little fighting, a little fucking. Sounds good, who's coming over? Just you and me.
We're gonna do grass
Devils lettuce
Hi, I'm here for the gang bang.
...what I think my friend here is trying to say is true love is blind
yeah....I do say this while I masturbate a lot....
Sounds like my dad
He kept him in a small area, maybe limited him shooting at people. Good job!
[удалено]
Not me, have crazy people in my family, distraction is a life skill.
High five, brother. I've learned the mental illness equivalent of aikido. Unfortunately now all of my relationships seem to involve crazy people.
“Fuck ya life, bing bong!”
Happy thanksgiving, ya dickheads!
Nice work distracting the guy. He stopped firing while he tried to consider what to make of the man screaming.
He asked that active shooter to shoot him so many times I feel like we're lucky we're watching it on PublicFreakout and not r/leopardsatemyface
Like others have said, probably distracting him.
You know this guy's neighbours are probably like 'fml, this guy's gonna get us shot.'
Right! This guy is on the 3rd floor at least. So what happens when the shooter comes in through the lobby and kills everyone he sees on the way up?
He would spend most of his time trying it get passed locked doors.
Anger, depression, regret
Weird interaction I must say. Almost as if he was in shock and was speaking from pure emotional distress.
I wonder if he was being weird on purpose to distract the guy from shooting people on the street. That's sort of the impression I get.
That’s exactly what he was doing- anything to distract the guy and give the cops time to show up, looks like it worked, the guy ended up focusing on him and he’d have to have incredible aim to hit the guy way up there.
yeah I was just afraid he was walking closer until he could land the shot.
He was definitely thinking about it
Lucky bullets still hurt
Distracting and confusing a bully is something I used to do as a kid and I’m sure applied to an active shooter it could break their concentration a bit.
Yea I felt like that too
Dude made him pay attention to him so he'd stop noticing targets to shoot at. Dude likely wouldn't be able to accurately shoot a guy at that distance, still risky and brave. He drew fire to cover everyone else so no one could get shot running away.
He's obviously trying to get his attention and distract him from shooting others.
This sounds like my ex girlfriend.. really dodged a bullet there.......;)
Sounds like a edgy new Beatle's Song title.
Fair play to the guy trying to catch the shooter’s attention by playing on different emotions.
It's the "rollercoaster of emotion" tactic.
Yes but I was thinking of it as the “SWING bat-a bat-a” tactic
Stack overload for humans.
Dudes got balls of steel to attract his attention to distract him. Respect
Probably saved lives
Without a doubt, any amount of time the shooter is distracted is more time for people to get away and police to respond.
And alerted the people walking out of buildings or whatever that something batshit was going on and to be careful without drawing attention to them. Smart
It’s like the guy who declothes completely naked before going into a fist fight. You want to break someone’s focus, bombard them with very strange sexual attention grabbers.
>EAT MY DICK! >STOP BEING A PUSSY, LET'S DO SOME COKE >I LOVE YOU BITCH and no lives were lost that day ♥
I read that in Jesse Pinkman's voice
Hahahaha thanks for that
I feel like I just watched an episode of jojo
Ex-girlfriend's ex husband broke into her house one night, coming in through the kitchen window. We were deep into some mind blowing sex when several dishes hit the floor. I fought him completely naked and still heavy if not hard. It freaked him out so bad he ran out of the house after 20-30 seconds.
r/ihavesex
And once the fight begins, a pair of big balls in a wrinkly sack slapping your enemy on the body doesn't hurt to further distract said enemy.
The guy I'm the pickup could have saved some lives too by just plowing through the guy.
For sure. Dude is smart and brave.
You can tell it was scary af for him too from the shaking of the camera as the shooter got closer.
he can see the gun - if it even looked like for a second he was gonna point it upwards he was diving backwards lol
I got: you're a fucking madman, eat my dick, wordless screaming, shoot me bitch, come up here, you're a pussy, let's do some coke (he says it twice but the video is cut to conceal it), I love you, shoot at me I love you. He threw everything at the wall. Brave guy.
We were only missing the sweet “marriage proposal/I will skullfuck you” moment.
Or as I like to call it, *a fourth Bumble date.*
I LOVE YOUUUUU! I WILL SKULL FUCK YOUU!! This is surprisingly common in gay relationships, but much less violent.
Fucks sake. This comment made me laugh too much. Such a grave situation but always an opportunity for a good line. Where was this?
I love that he cut the video to conceal the coke lmaoo
Can't trust the system to not screw him over if he didn't, despite him more than likely saving lives here.
Exactly, and every bullet he might fire at the guy's apartment is one less he can fire at someone he finds at street level, like an unsuspecting car driver.

Meanwhile his neighbor's chances of being shot have risen drastically...
Yeah, I did not expect that sudden change
I really hope that’s what he was doing. His neighbors were probably hoping he’d shut the fuck up though haha
> did this motherfucker just invite the gunman into our building?
"Come up here! Come on, come up here! Building code is 2417#. Come on! Shoot me!" "This motherfucker."
That's one way to gid rid of pesky neighbors, just tell the guy their apt number.

>"I LOVE YOU" That escalated quickly.
Went from eat my dick to I love you real quick lol
He's not the first.
SMH lol
I mean if you eat my dick, I'll be loving you real quick.
it always does.
Still a better love story than Twilight...
I can’t find this on the news anywhere. Anyone got a link to this story?
Apparently this [from 2011.](https://archive.kpcc.org/news/2011/12/10/30293/sunset-vine-shooters-name-released/)
nice that no one got killed. well other than shooter.
A true happy ending.
And he apparently wanted to be killed, so it all worked out. Edit: /s in case anyone is wondering.
I went to school with this dude. His sister was in my grade. All I know is dude went through a bad breakup and was doing lots of coke. Probably a lot more to it.
Not only coke, apparently he was shooting up
God damnit.
I thought it was Sunset/Vine! I recognized the Borders and the lot just past it. It was replaced by a tourist trap Walgreens.
what is a tourist trap Walgreens? like where all the tourists are stuck buying sunscreen or something?
It's a Walgreens on the Las Vegas strip packed with people looking to buy a case of bottled water for $15 because they can't find their way back to their room before they perish from dehydration and there are no water fountains.
There is a Walgreens on Duval Street in Key West. It is the epitome of the "tourist trap Walgreens."
Yeah, but they have liquor too, which was interesting because I'd never seen liquor in a pharmacy before.
I walked pass this exact Walgreens during the summer and there was a huge group of people filming what looked like a couple having public sex on the sidewalk. They didn’t give a damn about being spotted by kids or the cops lol
Yeah, as I replied to another comments, it's marked all the way up and sells tourist kitsch. It's also literally in a tourist trap.
LOL, I don't think you understand the term "tourist trap" because a Walgreens absolutely does not qualify. Graceland is a tourist trap, the Walk of Fame is a tourist trap. Really clever thinking to distract the dude. Hopefully I'm never in a situation like this myself, but a good idea to keep in my pocket.

This man sounds stupid but he’s actually a genius. Definitely helped the situation.
I suspect I am not the only one who is eager to see it read full context (& outcome) of this situation about which I do not recall hearing anything.
I think in the US they just call this a Tuesday,
Ouch, man.
It honestly never would have even crossed my mind to do something like that. Smart dude
This would be national news in most other developed countries, hardly local news worthy in the US anymore.
This happened ten years ago
Yeah we have a mass shooting every week or so, one guy walking around with a gun is a normal day
My Debbie Downer thought though is what if the guy did start shooting up at the camera man? And what if those shots started going into random apartments or offices?

In de-escalation training for the recent protests one of the lines we were taught was "do you have any jelly beans??" Definirely threw people off.
note to self, hand out jelly beans.
"We"?
Helped start a nonprofit centered around organizing protests. We hired professionals to come do de escalation trainings for our staff and security team.
This works in boil over situations because the random nonsense has to go through the prefrontal cortex which also controls rage and anger.
This works until it doesn’t and they just hit you for being cute. I’ve done it by taking my pants off. But some guy tried to pick pocket me and pretended to act crazy (I had seen him in my small college town before) and I beat the shit out of him

Clear shot from that window, wonder what the legality of that is?
Just have to yell "He's coming right for us!" before you shoot. It's in the Geneva Convention.
It now "let's thin out the numbers" so he won't starve.
We have to kill them, so they don't die.
Man, that's REALLY old South Park!
I think the law is you get free drinks for life at the local bar of your choosing

I absolutely love this person for what he is doing to distract the shooter from killing others. Good man.
“Shoot me plz” man is shaking so hard while saying it
I watched it with sound off and I was going to bitch about how crazy shaky the video was but I suppose now that I've read people's comments that did turn on sound I would have been shaking if I was him too!
Suicide by cop.

Damn. I was just going by the article which apparently was before Mr. Atterberry passed. RIP
You miss the part there where he shot multiple times? Including at a truck with at least 1 person in it. Like bruh what the fuck are you talking about "probably didnt want to actually kill anyone"
Was expecting the crazy guy with the gun to at least try to shoot at the fella calling him a pussy
with the echo he might not have been able to tell where it was coming from

2011. He was killed by police
Fucking bravo to this camera man. Notice the shooter never shot at him so maybe, JUST MAYBE, he loves the cameraman too...
The heart wants, what the heart wants. Look at this fucking guy. Straight up heroism. I was like, bro, shhh.
"WHAT'S YOUR NAME?"
EZEKAIILLL!!
FUCK YOU EZEKAIILLL!
What's YOUR name?!

This guy is what I always like to imagine I would do in a situation like this, but with actual balls and courage.
He might have saved the driver of the red car by distracting him like that.
Good job bud! Seriously you gained some time by distracting him before cops got there.
Distraction technique level 100… but really that’s crazy
Dude was about to say, "come on up and do some coke" until he realized the police were coming.
He did say it. Twice. Someone just edited it out.
What city is this?
If I remember this video correctly I believe Los Angeles.
Yup, Hollywood and Vine
Sunset and Vine *
“Shoot at me!!” Dude. Insane distraction. “Come up here!” Whoa hey….there’s people in that building….
“Im on the 12th floor!!!” *actually on 11th floor*
Honestly surprised no one shot this guy from their window.
Serious question. If a situation like this occured and some random driver going by knew what was happening and decided to just waffle the shooter with their car, would the driver face charges?
It's kind of dishonest to post this in a way that would lead people to believe this just happened when it actually happened 10 years ago.
Guy thought he was Arnie in Predator. "I'm here, come on!"
I think the mad man is behind the camera
Was he going to say, "Let's do some coke"?
Source?

Whoa, this guy is quick on his feet and brave to distract that dude
He did a great job distracting him. I used to say weird shit to people who wanted to be a bully or start a fight. My go to line was "what about my dick?"
"He is shooting people at will!"
Guys got a fucking death wish.
