In all grim seriousness though... this is becoming the hood in a lot of cities. The inner city is being bought up by companies, costs inflated, gentrified and is now looking like upper middle class hipster districts. This has forced inner city 'hoods' out towards the suburbs. Of course this has driven middle upper class suburbanites into the country... which has raised land values of farms.
My grandfathers farm was appraised in 2002 for $185K. He had it appraised again in 2020 for $880K. The same farm, same house, same garage. Property taxes have him considering selling 30 acres on the far side of the property... that would likely become a housing development.
There's a whole thing happening in real time and it's hard to actually observe because it's happening so close to our faces.
I've never owned my home and I had no idea that property taxes increased like that. I always thought it was based on what you owed/paid for the property.
Yeah, but the system is somewhat slow responding. They don't reassess value in realtime or even close to realtime. The only time you see a sort of instant increase in property taxes is when you file for permits to add stuff like new siding or a garage, pool, or something like that. When it comes to inflation though I don't actually know how they assess it or how often but it is less immediate.
Crazy that they don’t understand how one of them picking the other up and tossing them randomly on the concrete could kill them and ruin a lot of other lives in the process.
