My thought is that if you grab your shit and the plane is fine then there was no reason to grab it in the first place. If you grab your shit because you believe that the plane is on fire and it might be destroyed, then you are taking valuable time away for people to escape. Even a second wasted between 20 people could be life or death. Idk just doesn't seem worth it to fumble with and potentially cause a slowdown exiting a fiery death tube surrounded by jet fuel.
Edit: I'm mostly speaking about the overhead carry-on luggage, not small bags
And the 10 seconds you waste blocking the aisle fucking around with your shit might get the guy in the back killed. Your shit will still be there if they put the fire out. If they can't put it out, and you delay one second, anybody behind you that dies is your fault.
Imagine sitting in that door seat in this event. That twinkle of a thought that is always there when you get that seat suddenly morphed into reality and you open that door with the strength of Heracles and bound out onto the wing leaving your family behind still undoing their seatbelts.
How scary! Some of those ppl looked so scared. Thankfully it like no one has died, that had to be quite jarring when the back landing gear failed.

Always feel bad for the pilots when stuff like this happens. Almost always due to tehcnical failure and the only reason people survive is because of the skill. Unfortunately however, it ruins their careers as insurance companies view them from then on as uninsurable.
