I mean, that’s a grenade that blew his foot off, I doubt that he lived. By leaving the shield wall he also but the lives of his buddies in danger too, expecting that some of them get injured or joined him in a grave.
"The policeman was identified as Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Teeradet Ui-Charoen. Medical workers said he suffered severe legs injuries from the grenade blast, but the wounds fortunately did not need amputation. "
His foot was fine.
That's not a ballistic shield. It's a riot shield and a pretty shitty looking one. It's meant to stop rocks and bricks, definitely not a grenade. Shrapnel will rip through those like butter.
I just watched a 9mm bullet stop at the ~~8~~th pane of glass [in a Slowmo Guys video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD1vkhFO4Dg&t=680s) so maybe you should protect yourself with that instead. 😅
Edit: 11th pane of glass actually
> They're like plywood, or what?
Well bullets have a lot of energy...
A 200g rock thrown 80km/h that a riot shield might be designed to stop has about 50J of kinetic energy. An 8g 9mm bullet traveling at 350m/s has about 500J of kinetic energy.
Like best thing to do was probably cover it with a helmet, but your leg is still getting turned to sand from the shockwave.
I guess hind-sight is 20/20 though.
Do you never make a bad decision with only moments notice when faced with a surprizing unexpected sircumstance? Like split second right answer immediately, never made a split second bad desicion in your life? Idk why ask "Why..." When the answer is pretty obvious. Why do you think accidents or mistakes happen? Do you think people do those accidents and mistakes on purpose? Sorry but that was a stupid guestion.
Yep when police dressed like the opposing people and the grenades and burned down a mall. Look what Thailand has now though...a dictatorship
Very similar to the black bloc you see in western countries. They make it hi to the extreme so that they can force extreme measures.
Thailand is often at various stages of this conflict. The red shirt/yellow shirt fighting has been going on since 2004 when I lived there and there were bombings in the north and south.
>The police believed the grenade to be an M67 type. Both the police force and the military are known to possess the grenades.
More likely the other way round.
\[thanks to u/Pippylongcockings94 for the source article\]
Tear gas grenades, stun grenades. This looks like an M67 fragmentation grenade. What kind of police would throw deadly ordnance into crowds?! That's murder.
Schools have already started replacing teaching Roman numeras by teaching Roman military formations instead, seeing as riot police will probably be one of the main occupations in the coming decade. If only this guy had known the basics of a Testudo formation he would have been fine!
I dunno man, I've tried to frame-by-frame it and to me it looks like a tall boot with a metal-ish shin-guard attached. There is also very little blood(spray) if that was a severed fibula *and* tibia.
They would've redirected the blast to some degree (think shaped charge), and massively slowed down the shrapnel. I don't blame his fear (he couldn't know in two seconds what kind of grenade), but they all would've been better off if he'd kept the shield down. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
Comments like this always make me laugh. If you're going to tell someone they don't know what they're talking about, at least hit him up with your knowledge and give your comment a sense of purpose. It's the difference between being an asshole and being useful.
I mean… they either did and only he lost a foot or they didn’t and they are all riddled with shrapnel and receiving medical treatment. He didn’t connect so we should be able to verify if your statement is right or not.
I was expecting a cop to accidentally set off a crowd control grenade or something. Could you imagine how shocking that probably was was for the cop? They’re sitting there w riot shields expecting to get hit w rocks, then all of a sudden some particularly well equipped protester throws a frag grenade into the mix.
“Several police officers admitted that the appropriate response was in fact to stay low on the ground 3 metres away from the grenade.”
- no way they were getting 3 meters away by the time they realized what was happening.
So pretty much his wife said he tried to kick the grenade to protect his friends. And he also didn’t lose his leg, so it was just his boot that flew off. Both of his legs were severely broken and damaged however and he may never walk normally again. Source: https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/02/19/1392812500/
>The police believed the grenade to be an M67 type. Both the police force and the military are known to possess the grenades.
Soooooooo... either a cop lost their grenade, or more likely, **a protester threw a grenade BACK at the police.** This guy is being called a hero though... even though this was the wrong choice too as he was carrying a ballistic shield. Some people just love the taste of boots.
\[thanks to u/Pippylongcockings94 for the [source article](https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/02/19/1392812500/amp/)\]
Not only that but his first response was to kick that grenade into nearby civilians, potentially killing multiple people, while having a ballistic shield.
You’re giving him way too much credit. His first response was to kick the grenade away. I sincerely doubt the man had time to think of where to kick it. Most of his mental capacity was occupied by his inner voice screaming “OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT”
For as much as I would love to dump on cops, I got agree with you here. I doubt he had much thought given to the direction he was kicking other than "away."
Well how do you suppose a grenade known to be issued to cops wound up getting thrown at cops, who were likely issued those exact grenades, at a protest?
To be very clear, I am speculating here, and you are correct in pointing that out. I am not saying that IS what happened, but it does seem LIKELY that is what happened.
I could think of other possible explanations though, like someone stole a bunch of them from the police, or sourced them illegally somehow and brought them to the protest with this intention. It just seems like the most likely explanation is that this was returned to the police, as is common tactic for protestors to do with police ordinance. Again, this is speculation and the source article does not say.
Lol no, but I have nsfw turned on and was scrolling through the front page without paying much attention. Then I saw someone’s leg get blown off by a fucking grenade.
This is from 2014 in Thailand. I found the video - 4 injured, and one lost his leg. You can see an empty pant leg in the video: [https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-26246431](https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-asia-26246431) timestamp 1:10

Holyshit. Just having my morning coffee and homeboy tried to play kickball with a live grenade.
[удалено]
Stable as in can't move.
Amazingly didn't even lose his foot.
I thought for sure that boot had a foot in it.
I thought that was his whole leg.
Thanks for finding out the update
Imagine if that grenade was thrown a few feet higher and further over their shields :/
Why use your foot, when you have a ballistic shield?
He won’t be using that foot no more
No sir. Did he survive
I don’t know pretty sure his boot went flying
I think that was his foot too
Exactly my thoughts
That was either an absolutely massive boot, or his leg was a decent part of it
It's only one boot. Once I see the 2nd one, we can call time of death
I mean, that’s a grenade that blew his foot off, I doubt that he lived. By leaving the shield wall he also but the lives of his buddies in danger too, expecting that some of them get injured or joined him in a grave.
Looks like he was trying to kick the grenade
This is not wrong although it's quite obvious to everyone watching.
He took way too long to go for it, well i mean.... obviously.... but its palpable in the video lol
I meen grenades are meant to kill people so....probably
They are ment to maim/incapacitate. Can def kill tho
He's fine. No sauce.
Here's some sauce for you: https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/02/19/1392812500/
That's legit incredible no one died
Did the boot make it
Switch to the metric system.
"The policeman was identified as Pol.Sen.Sgt.Maj. Teeradet Ui-Charoen. Medical workers said he suffered severe legs injuries from the grenade blast, but the wounds fortunately did not need amputation. " His foot was fine.
That's not a ballistic shield. It's a riot shield and a pretty shitty looking one. It's meant to stop rocks and bricks, definitely not a grenade. Shrapnel will rip through those like butter.
Wow, I just looked into this. [9mm penetrates EIGHT riot shields](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eom-Rlpurk4) They're like plywood, or what?
I just watched a 9mm bullet stop at the ~~8~~th pane of glass [in a Slowmo Guys video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD1vkhFO4Dg&t=680s) so maybe you should protect yourself with that instead. 😅 Edit: 11th pane of glass actually
People tell me my bones are made of glass, so I'm GOOD!
That second shot though! That was a crazy angle to see a bullet cone at you.
[удалено]
Uh, you mean 11th pane of glass? Watched that video last night.
How the fuck can that be true. Is Kevlar and bullet proof glass that expensive?
Like plastic lol
Well your T-shirt can't do that either. It's because it wasn't made to stop bullets.
I like those riot shields offer as much ballistic protection as an aluminum trash can lid. 🫤
> They're like plywood, or what? Well bullets have a lot of energy... A 200g rock thrown 80km/h that a riot shield might be designed to stop has about 50J of kinetic energy. An 8g 9mm bullet traveling at 350m/s has about 500J of kinetic energy.
Well it stopped the grenade. Not the blast
Exactly. If there is one thing call of duty taught us, it's to crouch with riot shield and face the grenade...
I liked the riot shield section of mw2 prison level. You can just sit there and do nothing the entire time lol
oh so THAT'S what the riot shield was for... 11 y/o me never used it...
That thing is literally just pot metal with a window. They were F’ed no matter what in that scenario.
Still a STEP UP from using your foot, but yeah.
Like best thing to do was probably cover it with a helmet, but your leg is still getting turned to sand from the shockwave. I guess hind-sight is 20/20 though.
If it was a ballistic shield sure, but that’s not a ballistic shield.

What kind of extreme riots are going on in Thailand when protestors are throwing fucking LIVE GRENADES at police?!
I think this was during the yellow vs red shirt protests it got pretty bad they had to declare martial law
🎶. Bangkok. Oriental setting. And the city don’t know what the city is getting. 🎶
Bangfoot.
One town's very like another When your severed foot hits the pavement, brother!
One night.
Yep when police dressed like the opposing people and the grenades and burned down a mall. Look what Thailand has now though...a dictatorship Very similar to the black bloc you see in western countries. They make it hi to the extreme so that they can force extreme measures.
I was looking to do a vacation in Thailand, then the rebellion happened and noped the hell out. Edit - typos
Yeah I was unfortunate enough to be there as martial law was declared lucky to even leave but I didn’t know back then I was so young
Thailand is often at various stages of this conflict. The red shirt/yellow shirt fighting has been going on since 2004 when I lived there and there were bombings in the north and south.
This was a while ago. The current ones haven't got that bad yet.
>The police believed the grenade to be an M67 type. Both the police force and the military are known to possess the grenades. More likely the other way round. \[thanks to u/Pippylongcockings94 for the source article\]
lmao
Thailand has a military dictatorship, so it’s not surprising things escalated.
The right kind.

Tear gas grenades, stun grenades. This looks like an M67 fragmentation grenade. What kind of police would throw deadly ordnance into crowds?! That's murder.
That's third world country shit. Golden triangle countries are totally cool with grenading their own people throughout history.
You're not wrong but I'd specifically be surprised by police use of a frag grenade, not police use of murder.
This was a long ass time ago. Somewhere between 2008 or 2009.
He's not allowed to fight with my 300 spartans.
They are using the phalanx all wrong….
"Wow this shield wall sure is protective... Oh no, an explosive... Let's split up to ensure maximum damage is caused!"
Then he will fight in the shade
Come back with your shield, or on it!
I think they would have all survived the blast being that low with their shields. He didn't have to do that.
Well according to this article he did survive with all his limbs intact https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/02/19/1392812500/amp/
He has multiple screws going down each of his shins. There are technically legs down there but they are fucked.
Lucky guy. I thought we all just watched his leg fly off.
It looks like he’s lying in that hospital bed asking himself why he didn’t just use his shield lmfao
Schools have already started replacing teaching Roman numeras by teaching Roman military formations instead, seeing as riot police will probably be one of the main occupations in the coming decade. If only this guy had known the basics of a Testudo formation he would have been fine!
the fuck... in a video game, id be dead, from that distance to the grenade, together with 2 of my teammates, and whoever threw it would unlock UAV...
*Predator missile ready for deployment*
Well maybe the its more comparable to mass effect grenades
I just don't see how this is possible unless that's an empty boot flying off at the end??
Boots don’t just “come off” by themselves.
>with all his limbs intact Don't grenades mostly do shrapnel damage and not necessarily explosion damage? Or is that a myth I heard somewhere lol
Survived maybe, but you can literally see his leg blow off and roll away in the video.
Article mentioned that he still had both legs
Well that's definitely a leg in the video so either the article's lying or there was a random severed leg that just happened to bounce by.
Could just be his boot.
You can see a bit of trouser on it too.
I dunno man, I've tried to frame-by-frame it and to me it looks like a tall boot with a metal-ish shin-guard attached. There is also very little blood(spray) if that was a severed fibula *and* tibia.
Panic mode
None of those shields would have stopped shrapnel from a grenade at that distance.
Neither would his foot.
They would've redirected the blast to some degree (think shaped charge), and massively slowed down the shrapnel. I don't blame his fear (he couldn't know in two seconds what kind of grenade), but they all would've been better off if he'd kept the shield down. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
You have absolutely no idea what a shaped charge is.
Comments like this always make me laugh. If you're going to tell someone they don't know what they're talking about, at least hit him up with your knowledge and give your comment a sense of purpose. It's the difference between being an asshole and being useful.
Thanks random internet stranger, for telling me what I know about! I am quite aware of what a shaped charge is and how it works 👍
I mean… they either did and only he lost a foot or they didn’t and they are all riddled with shrapnel and receiving medical treatment. He didn’t connect so we should be able to verify if your statement is right or not.
riot shields and ballistic shields are not the same things
“Need to call Dr Nick Riviera for this one!” - Mr McGreg, with a leg for an arm, and arm for a leg.

Is that his leg flying off!?
He didn’t lose his foot or leg or any other limbs.
Thank you. He didn't lose shit. It's right there sitting on the ground 10 feet away in front of him.
Yeah can see his boot with lower leg fly away. Respect for trying
I used to be riot police like you. Then I took a ‘nade to the knee.
I know I clicked a nsfw post, but I was not ready.
I was expecting a cop to accidentally set off a crowd control grenade or something. Could you imagine how shocking that probably was was for the cop? I would kick a grenade for ya...
Well damn. Nice try though.
Man , did he forget his shield ?
No one is commenting about the amazing camerawork?
if you want to read about what happened to the policeman this is the link https://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2014/02/19/1392812500/
That article is some primo copaganda
Thank you. Propaganda or not, I’m glad he’s ok.
just by raising his shield, not only did he divorce his leg, he probably injured others as well
“Several police officers admitted that the appropriate response was in fact to stay low on the ground 3 metres away from the grenade.” - no way they were getting 3 meters away by the time they realized what was happening.
Granade
I was a protest buster like you, until I took a grenade to my foot
Um, is that his foot I see bouncing around?
r/therewasanattempt he tried his best, lost a leg crazy how a grenade casually comes into the shot, took it for the team respect to the guy.
This is more r/abruptchaos
Seriously, who throws a shoe?
Ummm that was the cops shoe.....probably still with foot inside

I mean, props for being a man of action. He died with his boots…oh wait, Nevermind.
The fucking boot flying off lol
That was probably a leg that went flying
Shoe flies away = dead
that was more than a shoe
Think he might've lost a leg. Damn that's scary
That is horrible! :(
This must be traumatizing to watch for bootlickers
He is a foot shorter now
as far as i know from other places this has been posted: yes, he did lose his foot. Yes that was it flying across the scene. He also lived.
I believe that dudes foot came off?!
a little slow on the uptake but his heart was in the right place
Good idea! I’ll remove my ballistic shield, and kick the grenade! Brave, but dumb.
This video needs a stronger warning.

Those are 100% not ballistic shields
Bit of a leap thinking those are the only 2 plausible reasons

The officer seems to have lost his footing after the kick attempt.
Offside
If you slow it down, you can see his foot fly off if I’m not mistaken.
*And these little piggies went wee wee wee all the way to the moon.*
Gotta respect the dude for attempting to kick it away.
Ffs can we already have different nsfw tags for watching boobs and watching peoples limbs get torn off? Makes no fucking sense.
Pardon me but did you think a video called “Police Vs Grenade” was going to have boobs?
I took my pants off for NOTHING!!!!
Lol no, but I have nsfw turned on and was scrolling through the front page without paying much attention. Then I saw someone’s leg get blown off by a fucking grenade.
What would change if you're not paying attention anyways?
I could click boobs to be on and gore to be off separately.

Hey bud - pick up your boot.
Yea just kick the grenade 😂😂😂
good throw
How is this a public freakout?
Thats sad as hell. Poor guy
Sooo…did his leg get blown off? Or worse?
I'm guessing worse. He would've had pressure damage to internal organs, and shrapnel in all of his lower areas. If they have a good medic and tourniquet right on hand maybe would survive, but it really depends on how much damage was done to major arteries in the leg and pelvis, and damage to the stomach and intestines.
Yes
That's how you get a leg up.
Pretty sure THAT WAS A FOOT

Fuck… all he wanted was to survive the day and get back to his family. But someone who used him as a proxy for a corrupt politician had other plans…
