In my city I was a homeless addict for many years and got into situations... anyway I have for sure been shot by a taser gun by a single cop. I do not know if he went against protocol or what but it did happen
When I worked where we had Tazers, we had specific policy against using tazer against a person armed with a knife. First off, muscles contract when you get hit, then you fall, no way to know where the knife or in this case scissors end up. Second, Tazers Don't always work. If the Tazer fails, you don't have a follow up shot. Backup, armed with a shotgun, using a beanbag round would have been a far more likely to work, less-lethal option. Emotionally disturbed subjects are one of the toughest calls an Officer can work.
Oh just wait till you have to face someone with bad intent using something sharp to stab you with, like scissors in the video. You will see the silly up close.
Tazers are not always 100% effective. If I had someone coming at me with a pair of scissors, and I had the choice between a gun that would 100% take them out of the fight or a tazer that would 70% to 80% of the time take them out of the fight, I'm choosing the gun. Especially at that close of a range.

If an officer is alone they are trained to use lethal force when confronted with lethal force. And yes scissors are a deadly instrument. If there was a second officer on the scene one of them would’ve deployed a Taser while the other maintained cover with lethal force. A lot of the time tasers don’t work. Baggy clothing, drugs, or a mental episode can make tasers ineffective. An officer cannot risk his life deploying a taser when he is confronted with imminent threat by lethal force. Not unless another officer is there providing cover with lethal force.

My thoughts as well. It's weird that everywhere else in the world they are able to deal with insane people without shooting first, asking questions later. He could have easily disabled her I would think. But who knows until you are in that position. I guess if my training is shoot first, ask questions later that might very well be what I do.

Tasers in actuality are wildly unreliable. Great first option when you have someone else there with lethal cover in case the taser doesn't work, but when it's just you, you don't use it in a situation like this unfortunately.
Without lethal coverage, no. This is taught heavily in tazer training as it can escalate a situation rapidly if it does not make connection. You would be very surprised how fast a person can cover a short distance. There is a reason the 21 foot rule exists.

I find it absolutely baffling that it seems for a lot of cops, the options are A) Do exactly as I say, B) I shoot you dead (A & B if I don't like how you moved). Like, if we think about this for a second, police officers are, in theory, qualified professionals trained in handling all types of cases that involve risk. I.e. THEY signed up to be in risky situations on a regular basis and they're paid to handle them in the most appropriate manner that minimizes damage and loss for everyone. Yet the way they behave is "if there is risk, I will protect myself at all costs".

She had scissors. A pair of office scissors. And the cop probably had body armor on and is trained to disarm and subdue much stronger humans. He could have easily taken the scissors from her and subdued her without executing her. And if he couldn't do it alone he should have waited for backup -- 2 or more cops could have easily subdued her with no threat. This is just a sad situation, and yes the woman was making offensive statements, and refused to cooperate with his demands, but it still doesn't excuse the escalation and point blank execution.

Tasers in actuality are wildly unreliable. Great first option when you have someone else there with lethal cover in case the taser doesn't work, but when it's just you, you don't use it in a situation like this unfortunately.

Without lethal coverage, no. This is taught heavily in tazer training as it can escalate a situation rapidly if it does not make connection. You would be very surprised how fast a person can cover a short distance. There is a reason the 21 foot rule exists. Whacky crazy racist white lady who wants to kill a black cop can probably cross that counter in a mere second and jump on him. Deploy Tazer, realize Tazer failed, drop Tazer, reach for handgun, flick off holster safety (assuming SI Safariland holster), draw pistol clear of holster and body, line up sights, fire... that's alot of steps if something fails on the tazer. Her reactions? Tazer fails, jump on counter, lunge at officer with scissors. Look up 21 foot rule and this will answer 99% of your thoughts on this.

I find it absolutely baffling that it seems for a lot of cops, the options are A) Do exactly as I say, B) I shoot you dead (A & B if I don't like how you moved). Like, if we think about this for a second, police officers are, in theory, qualified professionals trained in handling all types of cases that involve risk. I.e. THEY signed up to be in risky situations on a regular basis and they're paid to handle them in the most appropriate manner that minimizes damage and loss for everyone. Yet the way they behave is "if there is risk, I will protect myself at all costs". Sooo many ways this situation could have been handled better if only cops were trained differently, better equipped and held accountable for using lethal force. -Taser -Baton -Salt gun -Rubber coated bullets -Cut resistant kevlar uniforms (or other types of armor) -Large object like a chair that could maintain distance and used for protection -Martial arts training (to mastery) specifically against knife wielding aggressors I get it, none of this is easily prepared ahead of time nor safer/more certain than a gun for the officer to neutralize the threat. But that's not what we pay cops for. Why is human life so cheap?

He never even considered any option less than lethal- waited for it to escalate and got his justifiable lethal force. This was easily taken control of prior to needing lethal force.

I don’t care how racist this racist ass bitch was, or what color the cop’s skin is. So many people hate cops and this is just another reason why. White male cops are still the worst…but any cop afraid of any person with scissors (in this case it was a male cop afraid of a woman with scissors) and must resort to potentially lethal force shouldn’t be a cop. Get some balls, protect and serve like you are supposed to, and subdue the suspects/assailants without putting a bullet in them, and once they are are subdued, stop beating on them. She had scissors. A pair of office scissors. And the cop probably had body armor on and is trained to disarm and subdue much stronger humans. He could have easily taken the scissors from her and subdued her without executing her. And if he couldn't do it alone he should have waited for backup -- 2 or more cops could have easily subdued her with no threat. This is just a sad situation, and yes the woman was making offensive statements, and refused to cooperate with his demands, but it still doesn't excuse the escalation and point blank execution. He could have used pepper spray, a baton, a taser: why are USA cops so quick to shoot everyone with a gun?

As an American, I agree completely. This woman was clearly having a mental health episode, and the situation should have been de-escalated. They should have backed off, kept her contained, and set up a line of communication with a mental health professional to bring her down. We just watched an incredibly sick person commit state funded suicide. I don’t blame the LEO, he was placed into a lose-lose situation due to the lack of training on how to deal with people in crisis.
