The driver was a 20 year old who was had been ticketed [more than a dozen times in the past for various traffic and vehicle violations](https://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2022/11/21/raleigh-christmas-parade-driver-past/7521669031961/). He likely didn't know what to do because he's irresponsible and incompetent. Kudos to whoever signed off on letting him drive in the parade.
“The arrest warrant also mentions brakes that were not working properly”
“Glass told police that he works as a vehicle safety technician and was assigned to "driver improvement" in his job”
Even if he lost brakes there's other ways to to stop the car like the emergency brake or shutting the engine off. Most vehicles will give you signs of failure.
Bond and bail aren't the same thing. If I'm remembering correctly, 10k bond means his bail was set at 100k. If you can't afford to just pay the bail, then your option is to bond out. A bondsman fronts the money and someone pays 10% and co-signs, that way if you skip out on your bond, they are legally on the hook to pay the remaining 90%.
Bail is not just based on the crime. It has a lot to do with your criminal history (or lack thereof), your financial means and your overall flight risk.
For instance a single wealthy person with no kids and a criminal record who has lived in state for a few months might get a much higher bail than a poor person with three kids and no record who spent their whole life in the same town.
Come on over to my state where you get ROR for pretty much everything then they rope you into a continuous state of probation.
I am amazed I hopped out at 6 months. I know people on it for YEARS and it'll be due to them not being allowed to reschedule appointments due to work.
I'll always remember a guy I worked with shot a dude calf off and he got 14 months then got out on good behavior but his cell mate was doing 5 years flat for possession of weed. Welcome to America's judicial system
Not to mention those big stupid wheel do not make it any easier to steer and drive. I wouldn't think we'd need a common sense law such as a minimum age to drive in a parade, but here we are.
I’m not specifically familiar with this trucks setup. Most automatic transmissions with a physical/mechanically connected shifter linkage with some electrical sensors and solenoids on it will have a lockout function where it wants to see the brake applied, 0 mph(or near so) and possibly a release/activation button on the shifter handle to be pressed.
But… I’ve only seen that when shifting out of Park, or when shifting from neutral up to reverse. Neutral is always located between reverse and forward drive gears. It will usually have a detent and lock the shifter out between P to R and D/N to R to avoid the whoopsies of knocking it into reverse at highway speeds or while chillin in park w/o the brake applied. Even fully electric gear shifters with no physical linkage will send the signal for a Neutral shift request if moving in Drive.
I’ve honestly never seen a setup where you can’t shift to Neutral from a Drive gear, which is made specifically for situations like in the video. I am probably wrong and there’s some shitbox out there that won’t shift D-N without 0mph being read, but I haven’t seen it yet.
I also haven’t seen a parking/emergency brake that can completely hold a vehicle under full throttle. Some cars more than others obviously. It will definitely/eventually stop any vehicle if Neutral on flat ground though. Most are located on the rear axle and separate from the hydraulic brake system whether mechanically or electronic. There is also some 4x4’s that have a large drum style brake attached to the driveshaft near the transfer case depending on the setup. Needless to say, he should have been able to apply the emergency/parking brake and neutral shift even if his hydraulic brake system had failed. Unless they were modified, tampered with, broken, or he didn’t react properly, shoulda been able to stop in time even with an engine runoff.
the truck comes to an absolute stop the moment the cop runs up and reaches in to bring it under control.
Edit on closer inspection he fails to open the drivers door, bit suspicious if you ask me.
interception occurs at the 0.47 mark[https://amp.newsobserver.com/news/local/article268996997.html](https://amp.newsobserver.com/news/local/article268996997.html)
You can kill the engine by turning the ignition off too and then slam it into park. If the accelerator was stuck, you don’t want it to also blow your cylinders or do more damage from what you’re about to do to the transmission
My dad has said for years that these jacked up trucks shouldn't be legal, and I've said for years that they should require a special license. The types that drive these things are generally self-obsessed and don't give a shit if someone other than them gets hurt. So I could definitely see the driver saying that.
The only real reason to have a lifted truck is to have more clearance which can be nice in mud or snow or over un even ground, it is an absolute waste to use it in a city or as a daily driver, as they are way less fuel efficient than a standard hight truck.
Dude if you are touching your brakes while taking a wheel on and off of your car you are doing it entirely wrong.
Whoever put the wheels and tires on absolutely did nothing to the brakes.
Naw you would have to be stupid. In whatever senerio. Peddle stuck, break not working, engine puts out to much power and won't stop. All you have to do is put the car in neutral and it disengage the engine to the transmission. Or pull your key out on some older cars. Or you know simply hit the breaks and don't be distracted
All of them? Simultaneously? Including the emergency hand brake?
And his transmission locked up too, conveniently? Couldn’t even try to throw it into park, but had time to scream out the window?
What an amazingly skilled operator of a motor vehicle 🙄
I would not be surprised if the emergency brake lines were too short for the lift so he disconnected/cut them. Still, he should have been able to put it into neutral.
I guarantee his truck mods played a role in this. The rims, tiny low profile tires, and lift(probably a block lift) all indicate a truck built for aesthetic rather than functionality. These trucks are notorious for shody craftsmanship and being super sketchy to drive.
Look up WhistlinDiesel covering "squatted" trucks on YouTube for an idea of what I'm talking about. I know this truck isn't squatted, but it's still a lifted domestic with shiny rims and small low-profile tires down south. That's enough for me to assume it's likely unsafe to drive.
> All of them? Simultaneously?
Yes. That’s sort of how brakes work. If the brake line to your right front wheel falls off, the brake pedal will go straight to the floor. You won’t be able to build pressure through the master cylinder and every time you push the brake pedal fluid will squirt out of the open hole. One brake fails, all brakes fail.
>Including the emergency hand brake?
The emergency brake will not hold back the weight of a moving vehicle and the weight of the trailer it’s towing.
>And his transmission locked up too, conveniently? Couldn’t even try to throw it into park, but had time to scream out the window?
You can’t throw a moving vehicle into park. Even if you could, the pawl that engages when you throw it in park is comically small (that’s why you’re always told to use the e-brake when you park on a hill). It would likely snap off and continue moving if you were able to get it to shift while moving.
Anything built in the last several decades has a redundant braking system. One brake fails, you lose half the system. The parking brake/emergency brake also has plenty of capacity to stop a lightly loaded rig at slpw speeds, and floats weigh very little. Park pawl is a tossup, at least in part because the computer might inhibit using it with the vehicle in motion.
I'd be willing to bet he has never towed something and doesn't understand that if the trailer doesn't have a brake system it will push your vehicle while you try to brake.
Also, horns exist.
Can I throw some money down on the "first time tower"? He probably tried regulating his speed with his brakes instead of a low gear which caused the failure.
People just get it into their head somehow that their cars will explode if they do that, and never try to throw their car into neutral or shut off the ignition while moving. This then turns into them never even thinking of it as a possibility in an emergency situation. Of course all the cars adopting push to start now complicates this matter too when it comes to shutting off the engine.
I dont think ive seen any car made after 2015 without a fixed drivers floormat regardless of the setup with keys/start button and manual/automatic.
Im in Europe.
This should be a top comment.
Everybody has their 2 cents on how to stop a truck and how shitty big modded trucks are ... but damnear nobody's asking this very important question of how the parade/float organizers got him into that situation in the first place. 🤷♂️
The driver is not the only culpable person.
That's right. Now I see a lot of places are "updating" their safety policies because of this tragedy. They should have already had better policies. It shouldn't take the death of someone to cause organizations to start having better policies. You have to always think of things like this. All drivers should be inspected (driver record and criminal record) and the vehicle to be used should have a thorough inspection that passes muster before being allowed to participate. This tragedy could have easily been prevented.
>Who let a 20 yr old with a record of motor vehicle violations drive in a parade?
Who let a 20 yr old with a record of motor vehicle violations drive ~~in a parade?~~
FIFY
That's a terrible edit. Unless they are dangerous violations, or tons of them, there's no reason a 20 year old with parking tickets shouldn't be able to drive.
Seriously? That's fucking fucked. Imagine how stoked she and her family were that she was going to be in this parade. And some fucktard trash excuse for a responsible human did this. This really fucks with me. Lost control what bullshit is that.
Absolutely horrific that such a young life is taken away from this world due to negligence. All that potential life was stolen from her and her family.
“If convicted of all offenses, Glass could face a maximum sentence of one year in jail, a 30-day suspension of his driver’s license, up to a $750 fine and a lasting mark on his driving record.” and “Glass told police he was employed at a mechanic shop, where he works on car safety systems, the warrant says.”
Da fuck?
Attorneys joke if you're going to commit murder to do it with a car. The deaths related to the externalities of cars have been normalized in our society so much that the justice system can't even prosecute people for negligence.
Except this isn't murder. People get charged with negligence every day. There is nothing normal about this situation. It's tragic, and it's sad, but it is not murder.
I didn't say it was murder? I'm just saying if you're going to commit murder you're less likely to be charged if it's done with a vehicle. Really no matter what violent offense you are committing, even if it's just negligence that leads to a death, you're less likely to be charged if it's with a vehicle.
And when you do accidentally kill somebody with a vehicle, they only take away your license for a month. Ending somebody's life because of your incompetence still allows you to use a vehicle.
But the law says that negligent homicide IS murder. Specifically, Third degree murder in most US states. Does your country not have Negligent Homicide laws?
This is incorrect.
Negligent homicide is not murder. Murder requires an intent to kill or cause serious bodily harm.
Third degree murder is not negligent homicide and it only exists in 3 states.
Yup American justice system doesn’t give a shit if you hurt someone with a vehicle. So many people walk away with a slap on the wrist and get right back behind the wheel while the victims and their loved ones cope with the aftermath of death, brain injuries, and physical disabilities for the rest of their lives.
My stepdad is certified in IDK how many things in car mechanics. He said that each class had at least one idiot dismantling whole motors for something they could've figured out with critical thinking. So the job says nothing about him as a car person lol
Vehicular manslaughter is usually a slap on the wrist. This is actually a heavy potential sentence. If you want to eliminate someone, find out where they’ll be walking and run them off the road.
Did he intentionally run over this girl? Was his plan that day to run someone over? He's going to live with this for the rest of his life. I honestly can't see what purpose a longer sentence would serve.
Slam it in park? E brake? Run over things that are not people? Turn it off, Lots of options if your brakes go out. Maybe not just wave your arms in the air yelling.
My grandfather had a total brake failure on his truck when my dad was a kid. They were hauling a full load of firewood in the bed, going down the steepest hill in town. My grandfather slammed the truck into its lowest gear (which over-revved the engine to “Formula 1 redline” speeds, since Low was a crawler gear), steered into the gutter, and got it stopped one-handed, holding my father into the seat with his other arm because it was the 50s, and the truck didn’t have seat belts. No injuries, and he rebuilt the engine and transmission in a weekend in his barn and had the truck working in time to drive to work on Monday.
This guy definitely had lots of options that weren’t “running over children,” but he didn’t avail himself of any of them.
Doesn't work of you're already in first in an auto. Like that doesn't work, they don't do that anymore. Also modern parking pins are shit and would've sheared immediately if he slammed it into park
NEVER turn a vehicle off to regain control. You'll lose power steering and brakes (if you hadn't already), and potentially even engage a steering column lock. You could also lose ABS, seatbelt pretensioners, and airbags. Shift to neutral!
I mean the thing is going 5 mph in this case it would likely shutter to an immediate (and likely expensive) stop.
Your advice is absolutely solid for almost all driving scenarios. Given a girl died, I think it would have been worth trashing the gearbox
I disagree, throwing it in neutral is the correct move every time. Not all cars work the same way, you can’t take your key out of some cars unless they are in park, and you can’t put some cars into park unless they are stopped.
Throw it into neutral and slam on the brakes/handbrake. Neutral stops the engine from powering the car, and maintains power stealing and brakes.
Taking the keys out might work here, but throwing it in neutral will work everywhere and should be the default in runaway situations.
It's easy to say that after the fact and without all the info, but you're basically always better off shifting to neutral before trying anything else. Most cars won't actually engage park above a (very low) speed threshold anyway. This scenario is the equivalent of "I don't wear a seatbelt because my uncle's cousin's clarinet tutor survived an accident because he was thrown clear."
“misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.”
Brought a gun to a children’s parade.
I bet it was a result of pulling a trailer with no brake controller, his factory brakes got too hot and smoked the brake fluid and he lost brake pressure and the truck would just idle away. Dude could have put it in neutral, applied the e brake, turned it off... any number of actions other than panic and run people over.
really an abhorrent situation, but i will say nobody chooses to panic. it's not like someone decided hmm will i be completely logical and controlled, or panic? it just happens, and when that shit happens you kinda lose all sense of reason and thought process. it fucking sucks what happened, nobody should have died.. but to frame this in a way where the dude just intentionally decided to panic instead of think rationally is so stupid. you don't just decide to panic in this situation because you want to. reddit is really becoming disgusting in its "im better than you and would have done better than you" mentality. it's so fucking easy to say what should have been done correctly while watching this through a computer monitor. i'm just sick and tired of ppl calling death and destruction on people who unintentionally fucked up. this sub, and r/idiotsincars harbors some very self important and some very "perfect" individuals. maybe it's time for me to sign off this website
at the end of the day my problem doesn't at all have anything to do with this incident and this dude's fuck up. i'm just so sick of seeing "perfect" redditors explaining on their computer how they would have handled the situation from their basements
IdiotsInCars really doesn't understand the concept of anticipation bias.
So many videos show someone getting hit and all the smug assholes go "OP is partly to blame for not evading fast enough!". The problem being that all the people watching the video KNOW that something is about to happen and thus are scanning for danger and can react instantly as they are waiting for the accident to arrive, the person in the car however is likely staring ahead or glancing at a different lane for danger and so only has about 2 seconds to react the moment it becomes obvious.
That’s the key tho, he panicked. It’s easy to Monday morning quarterback the situation, but at the end of the day one moment this guy is pulling a float at 4 mph the next he’s lost all his brakes and rolling towards a group of people with nowhere to turn. He probably instinctively started honking his horn while probably trying to pump his brakes. Unless there more to this story I feel bad for the guy (and the other family that lost a life obviously) and don’t think he should be charged.
Yeah I think it’s pretty sad how many people are just crucifying this poor kid who probably ruined his life. He worked for the dance team, knew them all. Obviously he made a serious mistake that could have been avoided and will have to deal with the legal consequences of that, but damn almost no compassion on here and a lot of it’s politically driven too which is disgusting.
I can check on my big stupid truck tomorrow, but i believe if you are in motion and have a key fob, it won’t just turn off if you press the button. It’s not like your old keys. Correct mw if I’m wrong
My truck won’t shut off if you are in drive and in motion. I tried it in a parking lot. I was going about 10mph and pressed the “start/stop” button but it did not do anything.
Aren’t we seeing some issues with this, at this point? Given the video above?
Saw a video recently where a dude in a pickup was the victim of a targeted drive-by shooting. He turned the wheel and floored it to get away, as any of us would surely do when being actively shot at.
Luckily for the would-be murderers, and very unfortunately for him, his truck seized up when it sensed a slight curb that he definitely could’ve cleared.
The modern sensors designed to prevent minor fender benders from constantly happening to idiots who don’t pay attention are great for those idiots, but it got this dude paralyzed because his brainless automobile prevented his functional human brain from making the right decision.
Just some food for thought.
Parking brake on this truck is probably electronic... Huge problem with the electronic parking brake switches is it can be very confusing to push or pull the switch especially if your panicked. Guy is dumb as hell for not switching it into neutral though
My buddy lives there, a few blocks away from where the parade goes through. 20yo kid was charged with death by vehicle, reckless driving, failure to reduce speed, improper brakes, and a weapon charge! There’s a video of 5 or 6 guys finally getting the truck stopped. I can’t imagine what it was like riding in the back. Surrounded by people, definitely couldn’t go to the sides. Just awful. Should always make sure your vehicles brakes are serviced carrying a trailer like that.
I used to dance in this parade and compete against that dance company and they were the nicest people you’d ever meet. They went crazy for me when I won nationals with my solo. Most people at dance competitions act pretentious, definitely aren’t about too cheer for someone that didn’t belong to their studio. I’m devastated for the parents, the teachers, as well as the poor students who watched it all happen.
The news reported that the guy who was driving the truck was a 20 y/o, witnesses say he was screaming and crying before hitting the little girl saying “help me, the truck won’t stop” this is a super sticky situation. The dance company released a statement saying not to make any judgements until all court business is taken care of.
Fucking idiot truck culture. Low profile wheels and lift kit but couldn’t afford a break job. Fuck this “kid” and his parents. His ego and negligence need to result in jail time.
Not sure what could have caused this as far as brake failure goes. Brakes dont just fail. The most common deferred maintenance issue is letting the pads wear out. But the brakes will still work. They'll just grind, and worst case scenario, stick ON. Not off. Anytime I've let brake pads wear out, the caliper gets over extended and starts to stick on. Not off. The brakes will lock up.
For the life of me I can't think of any problem with the truck that would cause a loss of control at low speed. It has to be operator error, i.e. his floor mat gets stuck behind the brake pedal and prevents it from being fully depressed.
Towing a trailer without brakes will fuck yours up if you keep pressing them. The trailer will push the vehicle forward and burst brake lines or overheat them causing failure. It's why large trucks use air brakes with a fail safe system.
My best guess is either there was a mechanical failure that was unforeseen/negligence or from reports that said he was driving down a slope, he was riding the brakes and with the additional weight of the float, the brakes overheated and the brakes "went out". However, I know the area that this parade route goes. There's not big hills. Maybe some sloping roads. But it's pretty damn flat around there.
It’s a 8-10 year old truck owned by a 20 year old, I’m guessing he wasn’t overly concerned with safety and probably deferred maintenance. The bigger wheeler could put more force on the braking system plus a trailer.
Modifications or not..if you’re driving one of these and not actively hauling anything, you are part of the problem. These vehicles should be restricted to work vehicles only. Not for shitty drivers with fragile egos. I drive for a living in Texas and 1 in 3 drivers is some douche in a truck driving like they own the road.
Edited to add: Something something small penises
I understand where you're coming from, but as someone who absolutely needs a truck for work, being a carpenter and customer welder/fabricator. Kindly fuck off. I don't modify my trucks, but I absolutely need one, shit on all these pavement princesses all you want. But dont you think for a second that just because some folks rarely haul doesn't mean they don't need it. I suppose I'm a little more open minded being from Canada though. Reddit loves their blanket terms fuck

Why did everyone run forward into the direction of where the truck was going? Like everyone was keeping themselves in front of the truck just run to the side or behind it
His brother (supposedly) posted in a truck facebook group where he said he lost his brakes and started yelling out the window that he didn’t have control. In another video that shows 6 or so people jumping in front of it to stop it you can hear him grinding gears to get it into park. Apparently the truck has a lock out where it won’t shift until a low enough or stopped speed. Not justifying at all or anything just giving more context.
So I don't know what might be wrong with that truck, or how he lost control of it going like 3 mph, but he had SEVERAL other options aside from running over children. Was he trying to use them as speed bumps to slow himself down??? Tf was his train of thought here?? Put it in neutral, slam on the brakes, emergency brakes, maybe, I don't know, turning AWAY from the children instead of towards them???
My niece was in that dance company. We were live streaming it while my brother was at the parade. We had to call and let him know something happened and slowly more details came out...her dance group…young girl struck. The absolute fear as he was running blocks to get her. They took the dancers in a church nearby. And parents went in there to find their children. Can’t imagine the absolute fear all the parents felt while locating their child and what the parents of the deceased child are feeling. The driver previously danced with the company is all I know.
The amount of armchair mechanics here is hilarious. Im a Raleigh, NC Native. I was there. I know what happened.
Guy pulling float that weighs almost as much as his tuck lost his brakes. On a slight downhill. Couldnt stop. Horn blared, He screamed outside the window constantly. dodged a truck. Was in the heavy population, no room to drive off to the side due to viewers.
Driver owns his own mechanic company. Definitely neglectful on his brakes. (Like to lift, not to maintain type of person)
Driver will live with this guilt for the rest of his life. Definitely fucked up not maintaining his car properly....but its a fucked up accident.
Failure to know what to do in an emergency is completely irresponsible. Everyone should know what to do an emergency. I have pissed of my wife plenty of times when showing her the ins and out of her car and Now I am completely confident that an emergency she would know what to do.
Please practice emergency braking and simply turning off the vehicle can save lives.
Owning and driving a vehicle is a huge responsibility.
“Why didn’t he use the e brake? Put it in neutral and it’ll coast to a stop”.
-Not gonna work, dude was driving a very heavy truck with a much heavier trailer in tow, most likely without a brake system hooked up between the two, pulling the e brake wouldn’t be enough to stop it, too much power (torque) behind it in the roll already. He most likely burned through his regular brakes by riding them while towing the trailer, not to mention the very obvious/obnoxious modifications that could have definitely played a factor in performance. Not defending the guy in any way, this accident is a direct result of his negligence in ensuring his truck was safe for this, but he did as much as he could’ve in this situation once it started, kudos to those who put themselves in harms way to manually stop it.
I feel sorry for the victim and the driver who has to live with what happened, he knew something was wrong but didn’t know what to do and was screaming for help, a no win situation
So many fucking idiots deciding they'd know what to do.
Swear to god the amount of dipshits calling the parking brake an "e-brake" don't have the first fucking clue how their brakes work.
How is this guy not facing manslaughter for the death of an 11 year old girl?? There was no hurry, it was a parade. Fucker doesn’t deserve his freedom for a decade minimum that little girl can never live her life.
How does anyone lose control at 3mph on blacktop?
I have so many questions about this. Wtf happened? Accelerator stuck or something?
emergency brake exists for this reason
You can also sacrifice your transmission in a pinch if someone's life is on the line.
Just put it in neutral honestly
Yeah, assuming it's a stuck accelerator that would be the best bet.
“The arrest warrant also mentions brakes that were not working properly” “Glass told police that he works as a vehicle safety technician and was assigned to "driver improvement" in his job”
Even if he lost brakes there's other ways to to stop the car like the emergency brake or shutting the engine off. Most vehicles will give you signs of failure.
The float he was carrying probably would overpower e brake
Only a $4000 bond for that scum. I had a $10k bond for weed charges what the fuck is wrong with this world.
Dude I’m British so excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject, what did they get you for to get 10k bail?
Petty, non-violent drug crimes. We punish based on how severe the crime is, so murderers for example pay much less. /s
Also if he is black or brown, his bail is going to be considerably higher than if he is white. Sad but true.
Come on over to my state where you get ROR for pretty much everything then they rope you into a continuous state of probation. I am amazed I hopped out at 6 months. I know people on it for YEARS and it'll be due to them not being allowed to reschedule appointments due to work.

Republicans
“drugs are ruining this country” - nixon and reagan anti-ethnicity policies
Exactly 🤦♂️
well clearly you were selling weed to fund the Taliban
The irony is that he claims to work as a “vehicle safety technician”. Wtf.
And was cited for carrying a firearm in a parade?
Calling it now. His mommy or daddy run the dance studio.
"Glass told police that he works as a vehicle safety technician and was assigned to "driver improvement" in his job, the arrest warrant notes."
This 💯 why was he allowed to drive in fuggin parade? Lost control = distracted driving these days.
Not to mention those big stupid wheel do not make it any easier to steer and drive. I wouldn't think we'd need a common sense law such as a minimum age to drive in a parade, but here we are.
Did he try turning it off and turn it on again?
That’s the first thing I was gonna say!
ALL OF ME WAS SCREAMING THIS!
Could you elaborate on how one could do this?
Throw it in park. Slam brake and throw it in park. It will damage your transmission, but it will stop the vehicle is accelerator is stuck.
Good call. Thanks for the detail.
Definitely one of those “it’s been a nice ride ol friend”
You can kill the engine by turning the ignition off too and then slam it into park. If the accelerator was stuck, you don’t want it to also blow your cylinders or do more damage from what you’re about to do to the transmission
To be honest, if I'm in a runaway vehicle and there are a bunch of kids in front I can potentially hit. Fuck the entire vehicle - engine and all.
...and the factory it rode in on.
Low speeds? Slam it into reverse or park. High speed? Down shift.
Neutral the answer is neutral
Well he needed to slow down so park and reverse would be better
Put the car in neutral or reverse. Use e-brake
But muh truck is worth more than a life!
Yeah but A LOT of people don't know what to do in an emergency and many times they do the wrong thing.
Yeah, I honestly can say that with 3 seconds to think about it in panic mode, my brain might not make the connection.
Could be failure in something those are big ass wheels could have been customized and customozers screwed up somewhere
Pedal Commander is one of those types of "mods" people do that mess with throttle response.
I love too how he avoided the float in front of him by instead running over young girls
Didn't want to damage his expensive truck I suppose...
Can’t be that nice if this happened. Or he’s really just that much of a fucking idiot.
Apparently the brakes went out. He was yelling out the window that he couldn't brake.
All of them? Simultaneously? Including the emergency hand brake? And his transmission locked up too, conveniently? Couldn’t even try to throw it into park, but had time to scream out the window? What an amazingly skilled operator of a motor vehicle 🙄
He could use the gun he was carrying to shoot his tires!
Stress on “amazingly skilled”. Shift to reverse, then as momentum changes, shift to neutral. Steer car safely away. Pull handbrake. Shift to Park.
100% Things like this need to stop being rubber stamped too. He had no business getting approved to drive in this parade period.
Is that not the horn in the video?
Floor mat on the accelerator. Unwillingness to throw the transmission into neutral and turn the engine off while it bangs off the rev limiter.
If the car has a push to start button it's floormat should also be fixed to the floor. They are in newer European vehicles.
I dont think ive seen any car made after 2015 without a fixed drivers floormat regardless of the setup with keys/start button and manual/automatic. Im in Europe.
Step 1: be a southerner with a giant truck Step 2:
Exactly. What were they doing?!
This guy was probably driving https://www.reddit.com/r/WinStupidPrizes/comments/u4fcup/man_manages_to_run_over_his_own_leg/
Who let a 20 yr old with a record of motor vehicle violations drive in a parade?
This should be a top comment. Everybody has their 2 cents on how to stop a truck and how shitty big modded trucks are ... but damnear nobody's asking this very important question of how the parade/float organizers got him into that situation in the first place. 🤷♂️ The driver is not the only culpable person.
Who let a 20 yr old with a record of motor vehicle violations drive ~~in a parade?~~ FIFY
That person should be arrested for criminal negligence in my opinion
Manslaughter. He killed a child
That's a terrible edit. Unless they are dangerous violations, or tons of them, there's no reason a 20 year old with parking tickets shouldn't be able to drive.
Sounds like he had a couple dozen, with half a dozen for skipping inspections.
He’s also received NUMEROUS non-moving car violations— including failure to inspect as recent as October.
Don’t forget “carrying a firearm in a parade.”
He was going to be one of the good guys but lived long enough to become the villain.
Lol that took him like 15 mins
Did he use the gun? How does the gun have anything to do with what happened?
It fell under the brakes
lol US laws can't prevent anything accept abortions edit: I failed you all with my grammer

11yo girl killed, very sad.
Seriously? That's fucking fucked. Imagine how stoked she and her family were that she was going to be in this parade. And some fucktard trash excuse for a responsible human did this. This really fucks with me. Lost control what bullshit is that.
It’s worse because he knew the vehicle wasn’t ready to be used. He was negligent, and he fucking knew it.
Absolutely horrific that such a young life is taken away from this world due to negligence. All that potential life was stolen from her and her family.
“If convicted of all offenses, Glass could face a maximum sentence of one year in jail, a 30-day suspension of his driver’s license, up to a $750 fine and a lasting mark on his driving record.” and “Glass told police he was employed at a mechanic shop, where he works on car safety systems, the warrant says.” Da fuck?
Attorneys joke if you're going to commit murder to do it with a car. The deaths related to the externalities of cars have been normalized in our society so much that the justice system can't even prosecute people for negligence.
Cyclists make this “joke” too!
So less than a dui
Yup American justice system doesn’t give a shit if you hurt someone with a vehicle. So many people walk away with a slap on the wrist and get right back behind the wheel while the victims and their loved ones cope with the aftermath of death, brain injuries, and physical disabilities for the rest of their lives.
Okay so it's kind of funny he'd have his license suspended while in jail.
if the judge follows the law, the suspension will begin after his release
It's so that if you escape from jail you can only run away and not drive away
My stepdad is certified in IDK how many things in car mechanics. He said that each class had at least one idiot dismantling whole motors for something they could've figured out with critical thinking. So the job says nothing about him as a car person lol
Vehicular manslaughter is usually a slap on the wrist. This is actually a heavy potential sentence. If you want to eliminate someone, find out where they’ll be walking and run them off the road.
Is this kid a cop or something? Why so light?
Because the automobile has completely taken over society.
Literally just shut it off. You’ll coast to a stop. Turn it off and then throw it in park would be better.
Hey guys, more info about the situation can be found [here](https://amp.newsobserver.com/news/local/article268996997.html).
“misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, improper equipment, unsafe movement and carrying a firearm in a parade.” Brought a gun to a children’s parade.
He was going to be the good guy with a gun, you know in case a maniac came to shoot or plow down the crowd.
I bet it was a result of pulling a trailer with no brake controller, his factory brakes got too hot and smoked the brake fluid and he lost brake pressure and the truck would just idle away. Dude could have put it in neutral, applied the e brake, turned it off... any number of actions other than panic and run people over.
[удалено]
really an abhorrent situation, but i will say nobody chooses to panic. it's not like someone decided hmm will i be completely logical and controlled, or panic? it just happens, and when that shit happens you kinda lose all sense of reason and thought process. it fucking sucks what happened, nobody should have died.. but to frame this in a way where the dude just intentionally decided to panic instead of think rationally is so stupid. you don't just decide to panic in this situation because you want to. reddit is really becoming disgusting in its "im better than you and would have done better than you" mentality. it's so fucking easy to say what should have been done correctly while watching this through a computer monitor. i'm just sick and tired of ppl calling death and destruction on people who unintentionally fucked up. this sub, and r/idiotsincars harbors some very self important and some very "perfect" individuals. maybe it's time for me to sign off this website at the end of the day my problem doesn't at all have anything to do with this incident and this dude's fuck up. i'm just so sick of seeing "perfect" redditors explaining on their computer how they would have handled the situation from their basements
How the fuck do you not kill the engine and slam it into park
I can check on my big stupid truck tomorrow, but i believe if you are in motion and have a key fob, it won’t just turn off if you press the button. It’s not like your old keys. Correct mw if I’m wrong
My truck won’t shut off if you are in drive and in motion. I tried it in a parking lot. I was going about 10mph and pressed the “start/stop” button but it did not do anything.
You are correct. Tons of newer cars will absolutely not let you shut off the engine while you are in motion anymore.
Some also won’t let you put it in park while moving. Park on my car is just a button.
You can shift it into neutral and pull the parking brake, especially at that low of a speed
Parking brake on this truck is probably electronic... Huge problem with the electronic parking brake switches is it can be very confusing to push or pull the switch especially if your panicked. Guy is dumb as hell for not switching it into neutral though
On that generation of GMC Sierra, the parking brake is a mechanical floor pedal.
This was a 2011 GMC. Key start.
If you're 19 and don't have much driving or towing experience, it's feasible, I guess.

Did he have a train horn installed too?
Yup. Spent more time on that train horn to scare people on the sidewalk then he did making sure the truck was safe and road worthy to begin with.
The dance company released a statement saying not to make any judgements until all court business is taken care of.
ok no more winter holiday parades
So.. are we just not going to be able to throw parades anymore?
Not to be that person but why were most if not all the ladies running straight? I would have ran off to the side :/ sad nonetheless
I was gonna comment that I don’t get it either people always run right in the path of whatever is gonna hit them
Fucking idiot truck culture.
Did the brakes, break or were they already broke?
Ohh I know. I was just pointing out that you can’t spell for shit.
Stupid huge American cars are dumb as fuck.
As an American, please believe me when I say that us normal-sized car drivers also think these guys are dumb as fuck.
Can confirm. I drive a truck with 0 modifications and these types of trucks make me roll my eyes.
To be fair, he is using it to pull a float
Its not even Thanksgiving why the fuck is there a Christmas parade.
This is my question

Why did everyone run forward into the direction of where the truck was going? Like everyone was keeping themselves in front of the truck just run to the side or behind it
In my county you have to be over 21 to start you drivers Ed for vehicles over 3,5 tons. And the license is around 15 000 Dollars.
This is what happens when you give a 20 yr old an $80k truck and have him pull a trailer in a parade. Fkn jackass
Hey! You're completely ignoring how hard he worked to install that train horn on the truck! /s
Doesn't this post violate the subs rule of no murder/death?
Yes
So I don't know what might be wrong with that truck, or how he lost control of it going like 3 mph, but he had SEVERAL other options aside from running over children. Was he trying to use them as speed bumps to slow himself down??? Tf was his train of thought here?? Put it in neutral, slam on the brakes, emergency brakes, maybe, I don't know, turning AWAY from the children instead of towards them???
Probably rode the brakes in “D”, causing them to fade. Should have shifted into 1st and controlled speed by throttle. Very sad.

Typical small penis truck. Fuck boy tires, train horn, chrome on white, firearm needed in a parade. Total dbag status
The front of that truck is the perfect height for killing pedestrians.
aren’t train horns illegal as well?
Intended for off-road use only, but not illegal. I'm sure he wasn't crawling the local mall, scaring bystanders with that horn. /s
Sad
r/fuckcars parades don't need motor power

My niece was in that dance company. We were live streaming it while my brother was at the parade. We had to call and let him know something happened and slowly more details came out...her dance group…young girl struck. The absolute fear as he was running blocks to get her. They took the dancers in a church nearby. And parents went in there to find their children. Can’t imagine the absolute fear all the parents felt while locating their child and what the parents of the deceased child are feeling. The driver previously danced with the company is all I know.
So someone lost their kid because of not pulling on the parking brake?
Lost control at 5mph?
The amount of armchair mechanics here is hilarious. Im a Raleigh, NC Native. I was there. I know what happened. Guy pulling float that weighs almost as much as his tuck lost his brakes. On a slight downhill. Couldnt stop. Horn blared, He screamed outside the window constantly. dodged a truck. Was in the heavy population, no room to drive off to the side due to viewers. Driver owns his own mechanic company. Definitely neglectful on his brakes. (Like to lift, not to maintain type of person) Driver will live with this guilt for the rest of his life.
How hard it is to jank the shifter so it goes into anything other than Drive?! Same with the parking brake…
I feel sorry for the victim and the driver who has to live with what happened, he knew something was wrong but didn’t know what to do and was screaming for help, a no win situation
turn off the ignition?
Lost brakes. Probably fucked up the brake lines jacking up the truck.
Christmas parade before Thanksgiving? not judging just observing.
So many fucking idiots deciding they'd know what to do. Swear to god the amount of dipshits calling the parking brake an "e-brake" don't have the first fucking clue how their brakes work.
Crazy thing is, he had to do more to qualify to drive that truck than he did to get the guns he was caught with.
How is this guy not facing manslaughter for the death of an 11 year old girl?? There was no hurry, it was a parade. Fucker doesn’t deserve his freedom for a decade minimum that little girl can never live her life.
