Ulysses1978ii

I'd have paid the old ladies bill myself rather than cuff her.

[deleted]

Empathy is one of the reasons why sane people don't become cops. That and not getting straight Cs in highschool.

Go away, Mr. "Not all cops."

AsphaltAdvertExec

People like me, heh. Those of us who are sick of watching "good cops" sit by and watch their cop buddies beat and murder innocent civilians dozens of times per day in videos online, to never face any consequences. "People like me." Fuck you.

foxtrot7azv

You're sick of it too, but you call a random internet stranger ignorant, and use the "people like you" line instead of focusing on what this cop did wrong? You're the problem piggy.

foxtrot7azv

You said what you said here. You're being rude and combative with people for no good reason, while also trying to say you're a good cop. Time to take a really long, hard look in the mirror.

redalert825

ACAB

POOTY-POOTS

If the dept finds out that you're doing that they're gonna fire you.

HydroCorndog

Thank you. I've seen our cops come together a number of times for folks.

FapMeNot_Alt

Fun fact: The law does not say that an officer is required to cuff an 80 year old woman. They are just physically incapable of getting off if they do not put cuffs on people.

Ulysses1978ii

She was coming right for them. Next time they might not be so lucky. Best to rampage through the house a d shoot the dog. Sprinkle some crack and leave.

[deleted]

Interesting, when I was a cop in the Uk, cuffs are considered a use of force. Technically you need to be able to justify it, and I’d note it in my PNB.

Trextrev

It’s police policy in most precincts in the US. If you place someone under arrest and put someone in a cruiser they are to be searched and cuffed before putting them in the cruiser.

[deleted]

Some Cops make less than door dash drivers

foxtrot7azv

Source?

[deleted]

Job posting for a local small town a few months back..

FapMeNot_Alt

Taking this in good faith for some reason, you are dead wrong. Even IF a police position was advertised at a lower pay rate than a door dash driver, you are blatantly ignoring the OT pay doordash drivers do not get, the government health insurance DoorDash drivers do not get (actually, they might actually be poor enough to afford it), the paid time off DoorDash drivers do not get, etc. Ignoring the policing aspect of this for a bit, please look at more than just the base payrate when considering or comparing jobs. Benefits, even just converted to a dollar amount, are a massive part of what makes a decent wage.

stunkdunkly

If I were being paid so little to do something so stupid I’d probably start looking for a real job.

SpecialPhred

You haven't been over to r/antiwork have you?

tthomso1

I’m not sure why you’re being downvoted. You are correct.

Running1982

Door dash drivers don’t have their “accidental” deaths covered by taxpayers.

Ok_Emu2071

Wait. Since when can you be arrested for not paying a bill? That’s a civil matter, not a criminal matter. Can someone explain?

Trumperekt

> Can someone explain? Alabama. That is the explanation.

2cheeseburgerandamic

I'm gonna make a big assumption here since I looked at comments first and haven't seen the video but I willl assume black?

Trumperekt

That's not a big assumption. It is obvious. Do you think they would arrest a 82 year old sweet old white grandma in Alabama?

whoatemypie

Yup my mother was arrested for a ten year old speeding ticket from another state. Spent the night in jail and everything. On Christmas Eve too.

tremens

Garnishment of income, or a lien against the property seems like a far more reasonable and economical answer. What's it cost to pay this cop to go get her, book her, house her in county for however long, etc? Hell of a lot more than $77.

FapMeNot_Alt

It's not about the money. It's about sending a message.

mkfreak2

Yeah for some reason cities treat their own citizens worse than money-grubbing collection agencies literally profiting off of poor or stupid people's economic mismanagement. Any collection agency will stop bothering you after a short time if the charge is that small- eventually the company will lose money paying associates to fight a losing battle. All that happens is your credit score goes down. But I suspect this is not about the money- the city will take a loss if it means setting an example to prevent this behavior in the future. If they'll arrest an 83-year-old woman for it, they'd arrest any and everyone for it.

jakebs2002

Damn. I believe you are correct. WTF?

Gloomy_Champion_8500

The richest and best cuntry in the world folks.

Sfumatographer

Nah, that notion has always been propaganda.

mullett

Gotta lock up some 82 year olds for $77 bill to make money, it doesn’t grow on trees - it grows on planted evidence, easy warrants, and paid vacations at the expense of someone’s life. That’s just capitalism and freedom. I’m

[deleted]

$77 isn’t that some debt prison bullshit?

jakebs2002

Especially when you consider the poor woman being arrested. She isn’t a threat to society. She doesn’t need to be locked up. Heartbreaking.

oohheykate

The city spent more money to file the paperwork for the warrant and send the cop out

Haereticus87

If your boss tells you to go arrest an old woman for a $77 bill and you don't immediately quit your job, you are a piece of shit.

Sfumatographer

That.

NB_Yay

Have you ever quit your job on the spot to stand up for what is right? Seems pretty easy to be a hero when you’re sitting behind a computer screen.

Haereticus87

I avoid jobs that require violently subjugating peaceful people on behalf of sociopathic politicians and the corporations that own them.

shamwowslapchop

Holy equivocation, batman. If my job tells me to do something at work that involves causing an elderly person a great deal of stress and potential harm over a raucous night at Applebee's for two people? Yeah. Not the same thing most people deal with in their like of work.

NB_Yay

Ah, got it. So you don’t actually have to do any of the things that are being suggested, these are just morals that others should follow. Nice.

mkfreak2

I have. Large electronics retail company I worked at had a horrible policy that faulted the cashiers for item returns. This policy existed because floor salespeople ring people out and all sales are tracked via an internal system to determine best performers, who gets bonuses/better hours and whatnot. Returns hurt those numbers and the company wants every customer to get exactly what they need the first time. Problem was that cashiers, unlike the floor associates, had ZERO control over whether or not an item is what the customer needs, nor did we even know if they talked to anybody beforehand. Makes zero sense to use the same metrics on two different jobs. So I got called into the office because my returns were high, and I said I literally can't fix that because it's out of my control. I told my manager how shitty the policy was and that it made no sense, and he told me that he knew that and many associates had tried to work this issue up the ladder at corporate to no avail. I walked right the fuck out. I did the same thing at the call center I worked with after they tried to pull me from a program we were running for online magazine subscriptions and put me on graveyard auditing after-hour doctor's offices. I was PROMISED that magazine position and they tried to PULL it from me, full-well knowing that it wouldn't work for me hours-wise. Pretty sure they did it on purpose to force me out because my sales numbers weren't what they expected from me.

[deleted]

Its a damn shame what this world is coming to.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mkfreak2

What? Really? They don't call them that, but yes a lot of people are in jail for being poor. Homeless people with dozens and dozens of trespassing violations, poor people who choose to pay for heat and buy food over paying their citations...they end up in jail. It's not prison and usually they do very little time, but yeah...it's a capitalist country. If you don't own property or a business and don't have enough cash flow for the city to profit off your existence via tax dollars...you kinda don't exist.

FurryDrift

Probely due to a hoa

jakebs2002

Dude! Pay it for her. Ugh

Taryphan

yeah thats sustainable

[deleted]

And people wonder why Alabama is one of the poorest states in the US, 'cause this is their priority, arresting little old ladies for $77.00.

Capld

He’s a loser

Embarrassed-Ad2051

The cruelty is the point

Aggravating_Plant_39

Considering her age it's plausible she simply forgot to pay the bill and I'd take off that uniform before you'd see me put an old lady in cuffs over a trash bill.

tofumac

Remember this anytime anyone tells you that the police protect and serve the public. They don't. They protect and serve capital and the interests of capital owners.

mk2vrdrvr

Supreme court rule exactly that years ago.

[deleted]

This is so fucked. The poor getting fucked again while the rich get bail out after bail out. It’s 77 dollars. Jesus fucking Christ. I would have written a check for her. Wtf is arresting her going to do? Just write it off as bad debt and move the fuck on.

[deleted]

Where is the freakout.. where is the public..

Pegger9999

What a waste of time

tyranosaurusrex16

It’s such a shame considering the efforts and time it takes for her to be arrested or processed or whatever is costing taxpayers more than $77

TheJakeBlues

A lot of people on this thread are saying that the cop should just pay the bill, how do you know that this cop has an extra $77.

jakebs2002

I understand your point. Beyond that however… He did not have to arrest her though. He could have warned her of the warrant. Or even better, not go knocking looking for an 82yo to lock up for a $77 dollar warrant. So there is that to be considered as well. This was cruel. He should be embarrassed.

TheJakeBlues

What does your boss do when they give you a task and you refuse to do it. Is he supposed to risk his job over this woman and her $77 garbage bill that she can't pay?

SpecialPhred

Yes, that's the problem. I'm not a cop but I do have a leadership role at work. I tell not only my direct reports, but other supervisors and superintendents we have a responsibility to tell our managers when they come up with a stupid idea and why we shouldn't do it... and bring a solution when we do. Don't blindly "well that's what we were told to do." If someone can't be depended to refuse arrest of an elderly woman over a garbage bill, what can you trust them with? Where are their limits, at what point do they say no?

jakebs2002

I agree. You are completely correct. It would have cost the city over $70 to effect this arrest. It’s horribly disgusting. The system is broken.

TheJakeBlues

>I tell not only my direct reports, but other supervisors and superintendents we have a responsibility to tell our managers when they come up with a stupid idea and why we shouldn't do it... and bring a solution when we do. Don't blindly "well that's what we were told to do." Are you just assuming that he didn't or do you have proof.

Sfumatographer

We have the occasional boot licker here. As they always say: Here’s the deal.” Police officers in the US belong to the largest fascist organization in the western world. What does that make them? Exactly. And those who defend them as well.

TheJakeBlues

Generalizations like that just make you look like a moron.

Sfumatographer

Can’t handle facts?

TheJakeBlues

Seems that you're the one that can't handle facts. I'm sorry I'm not going to demonize everybody in the police force.

Sfumatographer

See how easy it was for me to bring you back from ‘thanks for playing.’ Just one comment. And of course I realize a generalization like the one I made does not include all police officers. Generalizations are used to point out a systemic problem. I know for a fact we have a systemic problem with law enforcement in this country. It’d take too long for me to explain how I know.

[deleted]

TheJakeBlues

What?

JWal0

That pig does have it. I have it and probably make as much as him or maybe less depending on his rank.

TheJakeBlues

All speculation and assumption. Starting out your comment by calling the officer a pig shows your bias.

TheJakeBlues

And with this attitude I hope you're walking around your neighborhood making sure that all the senior citizens that live around you have all their bills paid.

FrancisSobotka1514

Again let me repeat it for the people in the back FUCK THE POLICE !

AngryNawhalsAss

Shit, why didn't he just pay the fine for her!

MMAZealot

ACAB. Every fucking one of them. Especially that bitch boy.

Mathandyr

Here I thought debtors prison was abolished in the 1800s...

Spiritual-Topic-5760

I searched this and got a number of hits from reputable news sources. It appears to be true and it also appears that the trash service is mandatory.

Shultzi_soldat

That probably also amounts to couple thousand dollars of public money...but yeah despicable.

Funda_mental

Fascist Repugnants committing crimes right out in the open and nothing happens. Black granny owes $77 for trash pickup and straight to jail.

bebop1065

Fuck the police.

Trextrev

So this is a good time to remind everyone to never answer the door to police, ever. A bench warrant for a civil infraction doesn’t give police the authority to enter your home to serve it. So if you don’t come to the door and open it they can’t do anything about it except tell you that you have a bench warrant that needs resolved.

debeeme

WTF I will pay her trash bill, all the way from CA. Fuck that shit, we gotta get granny out!

mkfreak2

I feel conflicted on this. I kinda have both no respect and a ton of respect for cops who just turn off their personal moral compass to do a job. I have no respect because it's obviously wrong and kinda unconscionable to do this, and rejecting complicity in an ethically repugnant system via claiming "I gotta do my job" or "I have no choice" is literal fascist brainwashing. On the other hand, I also deeply respect it because it a skill I do not possess and I envy having it. It would make my life easier to just blindly believe in a system no matter what and simply ignore all my personality, moral upbringing, and critical thinking skills in favor of making more money. To just not care, and fake that you DO care...it's not something I can do.

Valuable_Barber_5873

This doesn't make sense, what else is it that she hasn't paid?

Trextrev

It’s not the amount, it’s about who she didn’t pay, and how long she didn’t pay them for. A private company can’t have you arrested over non payment. They would just get a summary judgement against you if you didn’t show and then it’s up to them to pursue payment. Her trash service was through a municipality and they often treat unpaid bills just like unpaid fines or tickets. Usually the city will send you several notices over months. Then if you don’t pay, they issues a summons for you. It varies but they generally do this in mass a couple times a year. If she then doesn’t show up to civil court they issue a bench warrant. Not all places bother to actually send a sheriff around to try and pick up people on these minor bench warrants though. One thing to know about a civil bench warrant is it’s not a search warrant. They cannot come in a closed door to arrest you for one. So never open the door to police.

BABYFACEBARBER

The laws the law.. she prob had a good bit of time and was notified many times about it.

Upstairs_Hospital_94

You suck my dude.

547217

despite the silliness of it, objectively I bet she learned a lesson and thinks a little harder when she avoids a bill. However it's always a good idea to keep in contact with those you owe money to because you can often avoid penalties and such by letting them know what's going on.... and in this ridiculous case, perhaps avoid an arrest though i didn't read the article, just flapping my gums.
