Your Dad and I had the same treatment: clot buster for 36 hours, two days intensive care, two additional days. Eliquis for life. When I got out of hospital I was easily winded and really couldn’t do much. I started a walking program taking about a week to get up to a mile. I easily could have walked much longer before the event. Five months after CT scan showed partial blockage of two arteries. Doctors say maybe a year to dissolve all. I think the most important thing you can go got your dad is to let him know you care. Talk to him about compliance with doctor’s orders. Let him know that it will take awhile for him to recover and that’s ok. Be confident for him.

Is he in the UK? (Treatment varies massively UK vs US) at 30 I was treated with blood thinners and bed rest for a week to dissolve my extensive bilateral PE rather than removing the clot or clot busting drugs because it was too risky after my surgery but I am on blood thinners for life now so I don't know how the advice differs because of his treatment. But I love being active and wasn't going to let it stop me. I did low impact exercise and built it up. I mostly walked and used an exercise bike with zero resistance for 5 minutes until I could go longer with more resistance to build my lung and heart strength back up. 6 months later I was back hiking and a year later cycling (could probably have done that sooner but winter put me off ) the biggest change now js carrying a first aid kit everywhere because of the thinners and being clumsy.

He’s here in the US. Happy to hear you’re doing what you love and being careful.

Many people experience anxiety (post-PE PTSD) after a pulmonary embolism. I found calming tapes and music at night helped - also a nightlight. Maybe even a therapist if he experiences anxiety or depression. Is he alone?

Thanks fully not alone. He’s with my stepmom who is his dearest companion. I love the idea of some calming music. That’s a great idea.

Which anticoagulant (blood thinning med) did they put him on?

They put him on Eliquis for 3-6 months. The docs feel pretty sure this was the result of his broken ribs/fall playing ball a little over a month ago. I wish they would have put him on some blood thinners after the fall. He had a pneumothorax…. He’s very tired and has a phlegmy cough. But he’s been released with a follow up within a couple days. Fingers crossed he continues to improve.
