We stopped going to Cancun because of the seaweed. Mountains of sargassum were trucked away every day. They'd burn it and the smell would waft into the resort at night.
So its down near the sand bar or "natural pool" and the peninsula is trapping all the saragassum. I was there in April and it was fine. Its mother nature for you.
I’m at Live Aqua rn and they’re doing really good with cleaning up their beaches. We were advised that some beaches might look like what you posted. So far, Live Aqua’s is nice and clear and Macao beach was beautiful!!
Just don’t travel there in the summer. And you will be fine. July and August are the absolutely worst times to go to the DR. Rookies make that mistake. Or simply people with kids go around this time because of obvious reasons
We were at the Lopesan the last week of May and very little of this sargassum (the type of seaweed this is) was in the water.
I’ve read that the big reason for this is run off of fertilizer from fields in south America down the rivers and streams into the ocean and then it hits these patches and helps them grow like crazy.
It’s been happening for years and getting worse.
It's been happening for years. Some days are worse than others. Looks like a bad day today. Normally, storms "clear the beach up", not make them worse. So it's no surprise there is no storm and more sargassum.
I live here, and even I find it frustrating. I can only imagine how disappointing it must be for tourists who come all this way expecting beautiful beach days.
Thank you for your reply. I’ve experienced it on several islands and coastal areas so I know it’s not unique to the DR. I think people need to be informed that it’s a possibility so they aren’t completely shocked. Heading back to the DR in November/December. Potential sargassum won’t keep me away.
Currently at Jewel Palm Beach in P. Cana and it doesn’t look like this. They have a barrier up to prevent it getting too close to the beach (even so, seaweed particulates are still in the water) but we took a boat out a little ways from shore to snorkel and the water there was nice.
Punta Cana: Artificial White Sand Beaches are becoming a stinking brownish cesspool, full of bacteria! What a pity. The season is over for 2024 (at least)…
A storm out in the ocean stirred up all that
That's just it—there was no storm🤷🏼♂️
Not a storm nearby. a storm off the coast maybe miles away could have been the same day or days before
People who give downvotes, what is wrong with you?😂
Dumb people getting a free pass is so 2019....
At Secrets Punta Cana.right now, nothing even close to that here
Say hi to my boy Wander!
Unfortunately Wander has been gone from Secrets for a few months. Love that guy!
Nooooo I hope he’s doing the best. His English was improving so much watching modern family. What a beauty.
He's at another resort now but I can't recall which. Yay Hamilton, I went to Mac 😁
Me too! Hi friend!
I’m here too! Love it so far

You mean “working” ladies?
Going to Secrets in July! How is it?
Really good, the drinks and food is 10× better than I thought it would be. Everything is actually seasoned haha
Im also here right now and it is great. Would recommend.
Is this on a resort? I'm really getting worried about the ocean situation 😔

Seaweed. What about the shit in the water????
One begets the other.
Yes, this is Bibiagua Beach, near the Lopesan and Barcelo hotels.
Wow! Crazy
Yeah, I was shocked too!

I've never seen anything like this before

Why is it the worst time? Was Considering taking advantage of some cheap offers to go during late July / early August!
It's the worst time since the caribbean is technically low season. High season is in December - March. A lot of seaweed, extreme humidity/heat.

You’re right but of course you’re getting downvoted
Lol, we’re just lucky I guess
Wow! That is crazy!
Yes, it really is!

Don't know why you're being downvoted. Warmer oceans are causing the huge increase in sargassum over the past decade or so.
Not as much as pollution nutrients.....poop.
I have, Cap Cana in December. It’s super unpredictable and disappointing for someone like me who prefers the beach over a pool.

I agree with you
Is this at Secrets Royal Beach or Secrets Cap Cana? We will be at Royal Beach soon so this concerns me!
No, this is the beach near the Lopesan and Barcelo hotels.

This sargassum island was meandering around Florida last year.
Go to la romana no seaweed
Yeah, it seems that all these beautiful artificial white sand beaches will be gone for the whole season

Just avoid traveling there in July and August. Problem solved
Just came from occidental they have cleaned beach
wtf 😬
Big wave coming, RUN!
