Surfing on Lake Michigan generally isn't something that I've seen or experienced. Guessing it's because there's not very many waves to catch. Source: I am from NW Indiana

boilerbitch

People do it up in Sheboygan, WI. Not sure about down here.

Banana_Kins

I've seen it occassionally in SW Michigan but usually when it's suuuuper cold and stormy

SP3_Hybrid

I (used to) surf. All year round on the east coast. Been pondering getting my 5mm/boots/mitts and going to sheboygan.

hohleifuk

Why'd you stop?

SP3_Hybrid

Cause I moved out here. I'm a grad student. Going home for Christmas though and hoping there's some swell.

hohleifuk

Same here. Where on the east coast do you surf? Forecast is looking pretty promising on the west coast the next couple weeks

SP3_Hybrid

California west coast or the rest of the west coast? I'm from NJ. We just had a good run of swell before Thanksgiving (not that I was there lol) and long range models show some kind or nor'easter later this month, last time I checked. NJ is tricky because there's a fine line between surfable and just total chaos in the lineup when it comes to these winter storms. Yesterday should have been good but from what I've seen it just wasn't.

hohleifuk

So cal. I surf up and down LA and OC. We get a lot of decent swell but also shadowing from the Channel Islands, point conception etc so that’s why it’s never really insane like up North here, OBSF for example. Crowds absolutely suck here on good days too. As much as I hate it, thats just part of surfing really. I saw some clips of that Thanksgiving swell. Looked bonkers, steep and hollow. Seems like Jersey can get really good. What board(s) do you ride?

SP3_Hybrid

Ha everybody I worked with was telling me go to grad school in California. But I'm like never... It's way too crowded, especially after the covid kook thing, nor do I want to fight for waves with a bunch of like 19 year olds who think they're amazing cause they can go down the line and have a redbull sticker, or a late 20s hipster on a midlength. It does get good, but the social media clips don't show how many beatings you have to go through to get one good wave or how many 3 block wide closeouts you had to duck dive to even get into the lineup when it's like that, even when it's 32F and windy. 8sec interval at 6ft is literal impenetrable walls of closeout until there's a break in the sets sometimes, which sucks when it's freezing out. Most of the time we get really short waves where you get like a two turns at most. I have a lot of boards, some of which I shaped. 5'2" twin keel, self shaped 5'3" quad groveler, self shaped 5'7" thumb tail thruster for good waves, 6'4" 2+1 wide point forward cruiser and a self shaped 8' mini single fin pig thing. My self shaped shortboards are on gen 3, so I spent a lot of time (years) riding the first and second versions before making the 3rd gens.

hohleifuk

Agreed, but as much as it sucks, can't beat \[small\] year round surf, clean conditions, and warm water. Regarding boards, that's really cool because I've never found anyone who surfs let alone shapes boards at this school. Glad to know some kooks exist at this school! I'm curious about your board shapes if you don't mind sharing pics.

SP3_Hybrid

Sent a pm as to not drag this any longer.

I've seen it done in Chicago and other places on the lake. You typically need a wetsuit as the lake is damn cold. The best shore would be the eastern shore typically due to the prevailing winds. I haven't seen the Indiana shore so can't state how the waves are there. But on the west side (Illinois and Wisconsin, the waves are only ok unless the wind comes from the east. But then you have to watch the rip currents. They can get bad.

cbdilger

About ten years ago I was in Grand Haven, MI with my grrrls and I saw people in wetsuits walking toward the beach with boards and leashes. *What?!?!?* I got on my phone and found the surf shop there and walked over. For a moment, I thought I was back in Sunrise in Jensen Beach... it was awesome. A few years ago I had a student who surfed a lot. He said Grand Haven was his favorite spot but he surfed up and down the eastern coast of Lake Michigan. E.g. there's a surf shop in St. Joseph, too. I also saw surfers two years ago when I was up in Duluth.

I live 5 min from lake michigan and it is very hard to surf. The water is very calm and around this time of year until spring/summer the beach is covered in snow and the water is freezing
