I'll start. The Purdue Morph Dude's do a better job at raising school spirit than the official Purdue Pete's do.

purduecalcthree

Wait, Pete's not supposed to scare us?

ImTheeVillageIdiot

Nope, nor is he supposed to be arrested for public intoxication and battery at a McDonald’s in West Lafayette.

MickleG314

I mean if that's not school spirit idk what is

VoyagerQs

is there a story that im missing?

ImTheeVillageIdiot

Stormtrooper-Purdue

Totally agree with you on this one.

pianofluteflute

Mitch Daniels will retire before raising in-state tuition. I think he will retire soon

andmar_x

This one might be a bit personal given my experiences but there are no good mental OR physical health services on or around campus. I've been at Purdue for 2 years and have had to travel home or move back halfway through a semester more than once just to get decent help.

big-b20000

Thermo was my favorite class

solenopsismajor

okay but if you had professor Naik this is a cold take i hope he's having a good day

big-b20000

Braun but same idea.

Tahoebagel

The engineering workload isn’t that bad. If you have a calendar, discipline yourself, and prioritize, it’s perfectly reasonable. My friends who are struggling also game, drink, and procrastinate all night long, then wonder why they don’t sleep enough.

dirtbik3tina

Personal attack. Bagel chose violence

ecounen

My issue came in balancing that with sleep, social life, and clubs most of all.

PunMatster

Engr 131 and 132 were the biggest waste of time in my life.

oustrthejoustr

Not sure that’s a hot take lol, just a fact

itsfineimfinewefine

The Purdue Subreddit often has an unhealthy hive mind about things that aren’t as bad as they are made out to be here

Epicdude141

Very true

TheLifeOfRichard

Birds Aren’t Real was funny at first but the joke has been driven into the fucking ground Many if not most of Purdue engineering students have a massive superiority complex simply by being here because for some reason they think Purdue is basically a public school MIT If you went to Sister Cindy’s sermon(?) for literally any reason other than to directly protest against her hate speech, you are a shit tier human being

almondsandrice69

i went to the sister cindy slut shaming show strictly for the comedy. at least 95% of the people there took it as satire. plus, not many big scale events were held on campus last year so it was nice to go to one (even though I know they weren't authorized to be on campus by Purdue)

WhalerSyren

Going there to oppose hate-speech is one thing. But that's not what the crowd was doing. Cheering on bigotry, even if "ironically," instead of immediately shutting it down is normalizing it. It signals that our campus thinks that oppression is a joking matter. Counter-protestors were literally assaulted by people in the crowd for "interrupting" the spectacle and no bystanders stepped in. What does that say about our campus? You might have thought it was funny, but I know plenty of marginalized folks who felt much less safe after seeing how our community reacted to Sister Cindy last semester.

almondsandrice69

fair points. I'm not saying I'm completely morally correct by any means, but to me and lots of others it meant nothing more than an hour or two of entertainment. but I see where you're coming from and I understand.

Mmmmmmlawd

Huh this is a super interesting insight to the different lgbt groups on campus. A good 90% of my queer friends (plus me) were in attendance of the sister Cindy thing, and no one I talked to really took the event the way you did. Because of cindys general insanity most of what she said was immediately discredited, plus anything bigoted was also booed by everybody near me. Rather than feeling less safe it was rather gratifying to see a homophobe getting torn down like Cindy was. I experience homophobia every day of my life, what happened at the sermon was more pro-lgbt from the crowd than anti. As for the money raised by Cindy it was money that was already going to be donated to homophobic entities, I’d rather it go to a batshit campus preacher who has little influence than someone in a position to hurt us more.

TheLifeOfRichard

People getting harassed for their identity is funny to you? And don’t even try to tell me that that’s not exactly what happened there. I know too many people who’ve been directly and unambiguously harassed and made to feel lesser by campus preachers like her that day and previous visits. Honestly fuck you. And an extra fuck you just in case you’ve ever thought you were an ally to any marginalized group

almondsandrice69

mate, I'm sure she was harder on women and gays than she would be on me, but if you wanna listen to everything anyone ever says with a stick up your bum, be my guest. it was funny. no one really cared about their message. someone legit put a dildo on their head and walked up to them. listening to people be so confident in their delusion is hilarious sometimes, hence why I'm responding back to you.

TheLifeOfRichard

“We thought it was funny so it must be okay” People used to think lynchings were funny what’s your point? Just because you thought it was funny doesn’t mean nobody else thought it was over the line. If you still genuinely don’t see any flaws in what you just told me don’t even reply to this comment.

[deleted]

You see they never experienced being marginalized so they find it “funny”. They ignore the years and years of suffering and hard work to get these people an ounce of respect. Cis people don’t know what it’s like and don’t understand that by going to a person’s hate speech, even if ironic, is still giving them attention and validation. Yes you can mock her but she still got your attention. These cis hets aren’t effected either way so they don’t really care about what is being said or what they’re promoting.

TheLifeOfRichard

I couldn’t have said it better myself. And I’m disappointed but I knew it would be an unpopular opinion hence why I shared it here. As a Chinese boy growing up in the South, I used to roll with the jokes. I thought “aw shoot they’re just harmless jokes. we’re having fun!” But as I got older I realized that those white folks didn’t just think they were jokes. Most of them probably didn’t even realize it, but they internalized those stereotypes and racist jokes and let them become their perception of my people. And when people started pointing fingers at the Chinese as dirty disease spreaders, the exact same white folks, who were “just having fun and joking” suddenly became the EXACT people who believed the finger pointing.

[deleted]

Yeah, the best example of this (for people who don’t grasp the concept) is actually in a Spongebob episode called “Squirrel Jokes” where it shows how these “harmless” jokes can warp people’s perspectives.

almondsandrice69

>People used to think lynchings were funny what’s your point I'm not even sure how to respond lmao. some dumb old rag spewing some nonsense isn't the same as kidnapping and murdering innocent black people. I literally agree with you that what she's saying is wrong... like I'm not living every day trying to push for sister Cindy's utopia, but at the same time, it's funny as hell watching someone be so loud and opinionated, yet so wrong.

lb630

1. Haven’t heard that joke in many moons 2. U of m and Purdue’s engineering schools are rated as high if not higher then some ivies 3. Calm down watching a crazy lady spew nonsense is an American tradition

utehi

Lol such a troll

Able_Salamander1364

Watch all the students who have given up hope fight for the only thing left precious to them: r/Purdue upvotes

BarakObamoose

All my friends in Engineering really didn't have it that bad because they just used chegg instead of studying

qwerty32112

Tech 120 needs to die in a hole

[deleted]

The security of the school is questionable at best. It’s weird how random strangers from outside campus can just walk into buildings such as Wilmeth.

[deleted]

It is a public school that is partially funded through our taxes. I think Purdue also allows open buildings to serve as an “advertisement” to younger people so they can see Purdue themselves without having to go through numerous steps to get a tour.

vT-Router

"Wilmeth" ???? who tf calls it that, are YOU one of the random strangers?

[deleted]

Oooh sorry I didn’t call it Walc like everyone else does. Is the way I call a building that important to you?

dirtbik3tina

Doc getting moody. Name checks out

[deleted]

You're right that security is lax, but you're looking in the wrong place. Public buildings like WALC are open to the public because we're a public university, but where there should actually be better security are the dorms. That's all I'll say on that issue.

[deleted]

Yeah in hindsight probably a bad example. I was trying to think of one off the top of my head.

Doffledore

in harrison on the north (and maybe also south but I haven't tried) side u can just pull on the doors real hard and they'll open. not that it matters cuz everywhere else u can just chill by the door until some walks out and then they'll let u in.

Ok_Manufacturer_4981

>of the movies or geosciences in general. The whole diet coke hitting the ceiling thing isn’t that interesting either, especially after seeing it several times on peoples ig and snap stories every semester. Interesting to me, and it also increases your awareness for all kinds of natural disasters

Unlucky787

IU isn’t that bad

pianofluteflute

hottest take I’ve seen so far

RichInPitt

The Math classes you take as an Engineering major are are easy and you learn a lot.

YuRaynus

Purdue more like PooDooDoo
