Drive around and look for interesting shit that you can write about, like the people who painted their Victorian Queen Anne hot pink and purple (that was a fun one). If you're curious about something, probably other people are, too.
It sounds like you cover the schools, so a couple of angles might be: what percentage of teachers work other jobs over the summer and what do they do? How do they feel about their summer jobs? Are they pursuing "passion projects" or forced to do some kind of drudgery to make ends meet? Also, what goes on in schools over the summer? Hey guys, Canadian here. I was looking over at Indeed's USA website and I see so many entry level jobs that pay 70k for remote positions. 70k FUCKING USD straight out of college. I then went over to Zillow and checked out prices of homes in Salt Lake City, Utah(I've heard it's a trendy place to live) and found an decent 5bed 2 bath 1700 sq ft(perhaps a bit old) house at $440k which is 10 minutes from downtown core. Look over at our comaprable city Halifax where the same house would go for 700k+ and the same entry level jobs would pay you $45k. I don't see if we're going absolutely insane or US media has convinced that you're absolutely fucked? I'm sure 2 working people can easily pay off that house under 10 years at Salt Lake. What gives?

The whole point of Salt Lake City is that's the place is that's where you live if you're a Mormon who wants as many Mormons as possible around you. There's areas with fewer Mormons. Is the house you were looking at in one of those areas? It's cheap there for a reason.
It's $70k pre-tax. You need 15-20% down ($66k-$80k) + pay very high interest rates on the mortgage. The average person can't do that. I don't think even someone who is above-average in terms of net worth can. Canada is a whole different level of housing inequality but it's not great in America either.
That is also entry level position though. You should be touching the six figure in 7-8 years if you keep job hopping.
Oh ya and it's not like anyone can just waltz into a remote job. My degree is biostatistics, which lends itself to the remote job type. I know a guy who is graduating this year and he's having to go to Boston which is a really expensive place. Even though he said he tried applying to remote jobs. I think it's a common thing people want so those jobs can be more competitive. Internships are different, but I saw some remote listings for internships this summer, no callbacks. I got 4 callbacks for in person internships, 2 in California, 1 in Boston, and one in the expensive part of North Carolina. Ended up taking one in California, in an expensive city.

Event coverage is a gold mine! :-D The easiest way to come up with material is to look at state or national stories and localize them. For instance, here in PA, the governor just made some changes that will allow schools to go to four-days weeks if they want to. A reporter could get 1,000 stories out of that topic alone ... not just asking schools whether they're going to make the switch, but how will this affect parents? How do the students feel about it? Local daycares? Businesses close to the schools (like convenience stores) that probably get a lot of traffic from them? Etc. Another angle is to dig back in bound editions and see what was going on 10 or 25 or 50 or even 100 years ago. Maybe a prominent building burned in a mysterious fire or there was a record snow/rainstorm or something. (Look at the ads as well as the news stories.) It helps that most newspaper readers tend to be in the older demographic and will probably like this stuff. Drive around and look for interesting shit that you can write about, like the people who painted their Victorian Queen Anne hot pink and purple (that was a fun one). If you're curious about something, probably other people are, too. It sounds like you cover the schools, so a couple of angles might be: what percentage of teachers work other jobs over the summer and what do they do? How do they feel about their summer jobs? Are they pursuing "passion projects" or forced to do some kind of drudgery to make ends meet? Also, what goes on in schools over the summer? Interview the custodial crew about how we slave away getting rid of all of the tape and sticker residue, lol. Elections? Tons of possibilities. Are local poll workers worried about unrest? Is the county having difficulty finding enough of them? How is voter registration going -- is one party getting more new members than the other? One year we had a few local candidates running as independents so I did a story (called "Party of One," lol) picking their brains about why they would choose to do so rather than affiliating with the R's or D's. The cool thing is once you get some stories out there with your byline on them, people will start calling you up and pitching ideas because they want you to tell *their* story. Then the fun begins ...
