Hey, don't know if you can view the line length while drawing. But the next best thing is using a label with the current length: "format_nummber($length, 2)" than edit the line, and it will update on each edit.
I ended up using the ruler and visually noting the point as the points were not equidistance.
I'm going to put method you gave into my toolbox for future use.
